Shufflegazine straddles traditional and new media. We’re a print magazine, but we’re also a web site and active on Twitter, Facebook and more. The way we see it, print will continue to be a strong media in terms of advertising money for many years to come. In the Middle East, print is still appreciated in a way that it’s not in other parts of the world. That said, online and digital publishing has a lot going for it and it’s easy to see the attraction for both publishers and readers. At the Abu Dhabi Media Summit in March, Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt said in his keynote address that we should not fear the transition to digital media, instead we should embrace it because it offers so many benefits and exciting opportunities. Schmidt also said that he doesn’t see the world of media as black or white, as traditional or digital. He argued that we need to find the combination that suits us the best, and that’s what we’re trying to do. You may have noticed that we now offer bonus pages in the edition of Shufflegazine that you can get using our iPhone app. That’s also the edition that goes online after one month. This obviously means we’re trying to establish ourselves in the digital world in preparation for the future. Basically we want Shufflegazine to be available to you in as many ways as possible, whether it’s print, web, iPhone, iPad, Android or something else. On March 16, iStyle opened their latest store in Mirdif City Center, Dubai. The store follows the existing six iStyle stores in the UAE and another six stores in Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. Hani Nehme, Regional Business Development Manager for iStyle said about the location: “iStyle’s approach to this is that we try to be in every mall possible. You know, the most interesting ones in different areas. So we feel like Festival City is quite central and we would like to cover this area of Dubai as well. There’s an interesting mix of shops here, but above all it’s about demographics. We have a lot of our customers that live in this area.” When Etisalat launched iPhone 3G in February 2009, customers could buy iPhones from Etisalat counters within iStyle stores. Nehme said this was discontinued because it was taking up too much space in the iStyle stores. He added that customers will “very soon” be able to buy Etisalat iPhones again in iStyle stores, but the sales will now be handled by iStyle and not by Etisalat like it was previously. “We have no problems with Etisalat,” Nehme said. “We will stock iPhones from Etisalat as Etisalat products, but there will not be any Etisalat presence in our stores.” Nehme also said that iStyle continues to expand, and that they have plans to further the presence in the UAE with a store in Al Ain coming “end of summer.” He added that with the same timeframe as the Al Ain store, iStyle will also open a store in Muscat, Oman. The Muscat store would be iStyle’s first establishment in Oman, and Nehme said they’re very excited about this expansion.

Eric Schmidt, Chairman of the board and CEO of Google, gave a keynote address at the Abu Dhabi Media Summit on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. Much of Schmidt’s speech focused on «mobile first», the growing importance of mobile computing for Internet publishers, readers and advertisers. After the presentation, Schmidt was joined by Mohammad Gawdat, Managing Director, Eastern and Emerging Europe, Africa and the Middle East at Google, in a roundtable discussion with media. Gadget-craving Shufflegazine readers arguably are most interested in that Gawdat said that Google Nexus One, their HTC-manufactured smartphone, on sale in the US since January, will come to the Middle East in “due course.” Schmidt said that it’s “in a spreadsheet,” but as Gawdat added, Google has so many things to work on and Nexus One in the Middle East is not at the top of the list. Nexus One is selling very well for Google, said Schmidt. Although he revealed no new figures, he reiterated the figures revealed at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month that 60,000 Android-powered handsets are shipped per day. That number includes Google’s Nexus One, but as before, Schmidt didn’t reveal any sales figures particular to the Nexus, relying instead on the overall Android statistic. Reports have suggested that Nexus One has not been selling particularly well, especially in comparison with Apple’s iPhone 3GS and Motorola’s Droid. Google may also be in trouble over the trademark to the «Nexus» name. Apparently the US Patents office have blocked Google’s trademark application due to a US telecom company, Intergra, has the trademark. It’s been suggested that Intergra is interested in discussing a solution with Google.

عندما فتحت »آبل« المجال لطلب »آي باد iPad« األولي في يوم 12 مارس الماضي، استلمت الشركة 120000 طلبا خالل الـ24 ساعة األولى، بينما

ترجح بعض التقارير وصول هذه األرقام إلى 450000 جهازا في األسبوع األول. ستصل األجهزة التي تم طلبها مسبقا إلى الزبائن في 3 أبريل الجاري. هذه األجهزة هي التي تحتوي على »واي فاي«، أما طراز »ثري

جي«، فمن المتوقع وصوله إلى األسواق في نهاية أبريل، أي في نفس الفترة التي سيصل طراز واي-فاي إلى األسواق األوروبية. نعتقد بأن هذا

الطراز سيصل إلى الشرق األوسط بعد ذلك بفترة، بينما ال نستطيع التنبؤ بوقت وصول طراز ثري جي إلى الشرق األوسط حتى اآلن. قررت »آبل« أن

iPad pre-orders start in the US

When Apple opened pre-ordering for the iPad on March 12 they took 120,000 orders in the first 24 hours, some reports have said. Numbers as high as 450,000 iPads pre-ordered in first week have been mentioned. Pre-ordered iPads, Apple has said, will arrive with US customers from April 3. That’s of course the Wi-Fi model; the 3G model has an expected shipping date of «end of April.» That’s around the same time the first Wi-Fi models are expected to reach Apple’s European channels and our best guess currently about iPad’s Middle East arrival is sometime after that. When the iPad 3G model will arrive in the region is even more uncertain. Apple decided to make the iPad only accept a Micro SIM card, also called 3FF card, which is about half the size of a regular SIM card. So far, not many operators anywhere in the world have announced use of or support for 3FF.

A regular SIM card is about double the size of the Micro SIM card used in iPad.

PlayStation Move

The world of casual gaming introduced by Nintendo with the Wii has been, in one word, revolutionary. To date, almost 70 millions units have been shipped worldwide which is about the same as Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3 combined. (Source: Wikipedia) Naturally, both Sony and Microsoft want a piece of that pie, which led to the recent introduction of the PlayStation Move controller. At a glance, PlayStation Move looks and acts very much like the Nintendo Wii controller capturing motion sensitivity. The wand-like form factor with a glowing light on top might become the cause for some bad jokes though. In addition, like the Wii Nunchuck, you have an analogue stick called the “sub controller” that can be put to use in games that demand it. However, unlike Wii, this sub-controller works wirelessly over Bluetooth. Along with the motion controllers, Sony also uses the PlayStation Eye camera to track your movement, giving it a bit more room to be creative. Sony has priced PlayStation Move quite appropriately as well- the sub $100 bundle includes the controller as well as the PlayStation Eye camera and a game. It should be available by the end of the year and Sony is already working on 20 titles to keep you entertained with PlayStation Move.

Almost immediately after issuing the 2.0.3 firmware update for their EOS 5D Mark II camera, Canon had to issue another update, version 2.0.4. Apparently the 2.0.3 update caused «audio problems» for some camera users. The 2.0.3 update was highly anticipated and came about a year after the previous update. It added a histogram to the movie mode as well as a 24 fps mode. The 30 fps shooting mode was changed to 29.97 fps in order to be NTSC compatible and audio recording was upped to 48KHz from 44.1.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) in the UAE in March announced what they call a revised policy for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Fundamental to the policy is that TRA sees VoIP as a telecommunications service and as such it requires a license. Therefore, any such service being used in the UAE without a license, like Skype, is illegal. This means that for individual end users, the revised policy still makes any VoIP illegal unless it’s provided by the licensees, (meaning du and Etisalat.) TRA said they’re looking forward to what the licensees will come up with in terms of services. Keep in mind that even if licensees will start to provide VoIP, they have to comply to the provisions in the licensing framework. TRA also said that licensees have the right to block illegal VoIP traffic and that any user using illegal VoIP is liable and can be pursued by the authorities under the law. There is no pricing scheme for any aspect of VoIP from the TRA, but it falls under the regulatory framework, which presumably means that TRA will have, if not have a final say, at least a significant input into any packages and services offered, and their prices. TRA is clearly positioning this as a work in progress, with this being the first step in what seems likely to involve future developments. For a UAE market that has been asking for VoIP or a long time, this is good news that perhaps doesn’t go far enough to satisfy all interests.

ولهذه الشركات المرخصة الحق بمنع أو حجب أي تواصل غير شرعي عبر هذه التقنية، ولها الحق بأن تالحق من يستخدم هذه الخدمات

بطريقة غير شرعية وذلك بحكم القانون. ال يوجد أي خطط لألسعار من قبل الهيئة، مما قد يعني أن الهيئة سيكون لها القرار النهائي أو

على األقل حق التدخل بأي خدمات أو باقات يتم توفيرها، واألسعار المتعلقة بها. ترى الهيئة هذا المشروع بأنه مازال تحت التطوير، وهو الخطوة األولى فقط. للعديد من طالبوا بهذه الخدمة في اإلمارات،

Disney« التفاعلية، في دبي في مارس الماضي. تحدث جيسون

ريد، المنتج، عن هذه اللعبة وعن أصول الفكرة. وعلق قائال بأنهم رغبوا بجلب شيء مختلف لالعبين، غير ما عهدوه من ألعاب السباق

التقليدية. أطلق على هذا اللعبة مصطلح »لعبة سباق تحاكي الحقيقة«، حيث حاولوا محاكاة التجربة والشعور الناتج عن مشاهد

مطاردة السيارات في األفالم. تقع أحداث اللعبة في بلدة »فيلوسيتي«، حيث يمكن لالعب التسابق في سباقات تمتد على خمس مقاطعات.

تتوفر أنواع مختلفة من السيارات، بصفات ومميزات مختلفة، تسمح لالعب ببرهنة مهاراته أمام خصومه الذي يتحكم بهم الحاسب، أو ضد العبين آخرين عبر اإلنترنت. وكلما نجح الالعب بإكمال السباقات،

كلما حصل على قوى إضافية تمكنه من تدمير أعدائه وتفجير بعض العناصر الطبيعية الموجودة في اللعبة الستخدامها كأسلحة ضد

الالعبين اآلحرين. وعلق ريد: »يمكن تدمير كل ااألشياء الكبيرة في بيئة اللعبة«. يتوقع أن يتم إطالق اللعبة في شهر مايو من هذه السنة.

Split Second, an upcoming game developed by Black Rock Studios, part of Disney Interactive Studios, was previewed to media in Dubai earlier in March. Jason Reid, producer of Split Second, demonstrated the game and talked about where the idea came from. They wanted something different, Reid said, and not go down the typical racing game route. Calling Split Second a «reality racing game», Reid said that they wanted to create the feeling from car chase sequences from movies, complete with «high octane bits.» The game takes place in a town called «Velocity» where you drive in races in five different districts. You can race in different cars with different characteristics and test your skills against opponents, computer controlled or online against other people. As you successfully go through races you get more power and that power you can use to blow up competitors and elements in the environment. Reid said that “anything big in the environment you can destroy.” Split Second is expected to be released in May this year.

Microsoft shows off Internet Explorer 9Microsoft has made a first developer preview of the upcoming Internet Explorer (IE) 9 web browser available for download at ie.microsoft.com/testdrive. First announced last year, the new IE should bring support for HTML 5 and CSS 3 as well as a new JavaScript engine, built to take advantage of two core processors, which we find in most personal computers today. Overall the goals of the new web browser include making it faster and more responsive, and maintaining compatibility with web sites. Microsoft has said IE 9 will not run on Windows XP.

Game developer Valve has announced that they are bringing their online gaming service Steam to Mac OS X. Apparently coming in April 2010, Steam is a service with which users can pay for games and download them to their computers to play. Installed as an application on any number of computers you can play your games on all of them, but not at the same time. The Director of Steam development at Valve, John Cook, has been quoted as saying that this is «the biggest event in Steam’s history.» He also said that Valve is in discussions with all publishers and developers currently offering games on Steam and that they hope to bring many more Mac versions of games to players in the future. If a user has already bought a game for the Windows version of Steam and a Mac version of that same game comes out, the user will be able to also download the Mac version. Seen as a big boon for Mac gaming, this is sure to spur on gaming fans on Apple’s computer platform.

Gaming peripheral manufacturer Razer has launched their lightweight mouse mats named Vespula in the UAE. The dual-sided Vespula gives gamers the option of using a speed surface for faster mouse movements or a control surface for precision. The idea is that different gamers prefer different surfaces and different gaming modes may also call for sich differences. One side, the «Speed Surface» is meant for fast action and has a smooth surface on which the mouse moves very fast. The other side, the “Control Surface” has a coarser structure and is meant to provide a more tactical feedback to the gamer for more precise control over movements.

Rumors are ripe that EA will sue the makers of South Park for copyright infringement. We’ll keep you posted.

Top games banned in the UAE Although 2010 is still only a few months old, the UAE’s National Media Council has already banned a string of top titles, including Heavy Rain, Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins, Darksiders and God of War 3. Darksiders was the first casualty of the year, owing to it’s depiction of Heaven and Hell, and it came as no surprise when a similarly themed God of War 3 got the ban in March. Critics speculate that Heavy Rain, Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins have been banned thanks to a few raunchy scenes within the games. What caught us by surprise was the fact that Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins got banned nearly a month after the games had already been selling at retail outlets all over the country.

3D games coming this summer

Sony is set to launch a number of 3D games this June, to coincide with the launch of their 3D Television sets. MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, WipEout HD and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue are some of the games that are speculated to be available in 3D. Expect a firmware update from Sony during the summer to enable the PlayStation 3 to be able to play 3D Games. Sony is also expected to issue a firmware update to enable 3D functionality for Blu-Ray movies. In an interview with gaming website Gamasutra, Ian Bickerstaff, senior engineer with Sony Computer Entertainment’s UK-based stereoscopic 3D team said, «I think [3D gaming uptake is] going to depend on the uptake of 3D televisions.» Sony is planning on releasing 3D-capable Bravia televisions this summer, and Sony representatives in Dubai have told Shufflegazine that customers can expect to pay a bit more for the same size 3D TVs compared to the existing sets, but an exact figure is not known at this time.

ولكن جاء قرار منع »ماس إيفكت ٢« و»دراغن إيدج: أوريجنز« مفاجأة للجميع، خاصة بعد تواجدهما في السوق لمدة شهر كامل تم خالله

بيع العديد من النسخ في جميع أنحاء اإلمارات.

فيه المعجزات؟ ذلك التطور السريع، من ناحية، شيق للغاية، كما أنه يعطيني دائما الجديد لكي أستطلعه وأكتب عنه. ولكنه من ناحية أخرى قد يصيب الفرد باإلحباط الشديد نتيجة استحالة مجاراة السرعة ومتابعة

كل ما ينتج من جديد. وحتى إذا حاول المرء التركيز على فئة معينة مثل منتجات »آبل« مثال أو أجهزة التلفاز أو ماكينات التصوير الرقمية، فلن

تحمل النتيجة اختالفا شديدا.

حدثني مؤخرا أحد منتجي برامج الراديو قائال بأن عالم التكنولوجيا ال يعطي مادة كافية لملء خمس عشرة دقيقة من اإلرسال، ولكن العكس صحيح -على حد قوله- بالنسبة لعالم الرياضة. استمعت

إليه ولسان حالي يقول كم أن ذلك الحديث مضحك ومؤسف بنفس الوقت ولكنني لم أتعب نفسي بالجدال معه حيث أن نقص اهتمامه

ومعلوماته ال جدال عليه.

أحاول دائما أن أضع نفسي بموضع المستهلك العادي الذي يحاول شراء أي منتج جديد، آخذا في عين االعتبار سرعة التطور الفائقة. فإذا

كنت أصاب بكل تلك الحيرة؛ أنا الذي أقضي معظم وقتي مستطلعا عن الجديد في المجال ومجربا للمنتجات التي ترسلها إلي الشركات

المختلفة، فترى كيف يكون حال مستخدم عادي حين يزور إحدى محالت األجهزة اإللكترونية ليجابه ذلك البذخ من المنتجات من مختلف

األنواع واألحجام واألشكال؟. زيادة على ذلك، ال أعتقد أن سرعة التطور ستتباطأ في أي وقت قريب أو باألصح على اإلطالق. فشركات التكنولوجيا تتفنن بالقدوم بمختلف أشكال البدع يوما بعد يوم لتسحب ما تستطيع

من أموال من جيوبنا ونحن نطيعها بمنتهى البساطة لرغبتنا في اقتناء الجديد باستمرار. وبالرغم مما يمكن أن يصيب المرء من إحباط بسبب

السعي خلف تلك الدوامة المفرغة، ال يمكن إنكار المتعة التي تصحب ذلك السعي في الوقت ذاته. وأنا من ناحيتي، لن أكف عن القدوم إليكم

بكل ما هو جديد في مجال التكنولوجيا والبرامج واأللعاب.

Does it ever drive up the wall that technology develops at such a breakneck speed? It does get to me, from time to time. On the one hand it's exciting because there's always something new to look at and write about. On the other hand it's frustrating because it's almost impossible to keep up. Even if you focus on some particular area like Apple, digital cameras, or TVs, you probably can't keep up. A producer of a radio program recently told me there's not enough going on in technology to warrant 10-15 minutes of tech talk on a radio show. The same producer also told me there's enough to talk about in sports though. I thought that was really funny and sad at the same time, but didn't bother arguing about it because they obviously didn't get it. With the warp speed pace of tech in mind, I often think what it might be like for the average consumer wanting to buy some piece of technology. I mean, I work with this day in and day out and have more time to spend on keeping up with the news, trying out what different companies send me, talking to people about tech and much more. So what must it be like to walk into an electronics store to see the bewildering array of products available. And let's face it, it's not going to slow down anytime soon, if ever. Tech companies make too much money developing new contraptions to sell to us, and we're just all too happy buying the latest stuff on a continuous basis. So, as frustrating as it may be, it's also exhilarating, and I for one want to keep trying to bring some order to your life in terms of technology, gadgets, gaming and more.

I see you've changed the description of Shufflegazine to «Tech Lifestyle Magazine,» which I think is a good move. I assume you will cover more Windows topics. My situation is like that of many others: I am a Mac user at home and have to use a PC at work. I hope to be able to read more about Windows now in the magazine, so I can use it better at work. I love gadgets, but I think one aspect of them that is not taken seriously in Dubai is using them while driving. I look over to the next car at a light and the driver is texting, Twittering or doing something else. This has to stop, and I hope Shufflegazine can help in that effort. -PO

Q: Whenever I email photos from my iPhone they seem to end up as no more than 800x600. I’d like a way to send the full res pics. (I have 3GS so they should be 3 megapixel.) Is there any way to do that?A: Yes, when you email photographs from the Gallery app, they are down-sampled to no more than 800x600 pixels. That’s more than enough to email a photo to a friend or even post on the web. Sometimes, however, you want the full copy of the photograph, which is, as you point out, 3 megapixels and much more than 800x600 pixels. The solution then is to copy the photos from the Gallery app and paste them into a new email. Strangely enough, that way you get the full resolution photos in the email.

Q: Where do I take my Mac laptop for repair in Dubai? For some time now it suddenly freezes and the screen goes black, except for 1 cm of colored lines at the top of the screen. I have to just turn it off and re-boot. It’s less than a year old and I bought from Ibn Battuta Mac shop. Can you help? A: I can’t help with the particular Mac problem although it sounds like a hardware-related issue to me. You have a few choices in terms of service in Dubai. There’s PRO TECHnology (www.protech-me.com) on Sheikh Zayed Road and there’s iStore (www.istyle.ae) in Bur Dubai. I’d suggest you try one of them to see how they can help you.

Q: I want to buy a PC laptop for some office work, and for my son to do some school work on. I’ve been to the shops, but there’s so much to chose from. What do I pick? Any advice you can offer would be great.A: It’s a pretty complicated question to answer in a brief column like this. Generally, consider what you’re going to do with the computer, what applications you will need to run, whether you’re likely to carry the notebook around a lot, etc. For example, a bigger screen size may be tempting, but it also adds weight and cost. Talk to some friends and ask what brands and stores they trust and utilize local online forums to find out what other users think. Once you’ve narrowed down your choice a bit, search online for the specific models to make a comparison between them.

Q: Our OfficeJet 6210 from HP has been very good since we bought it, but lately we seem to have more and more paper jams. It’s like every other print gets paper stuck, and we have to lift the lid and pull out the paper. Can we do something to avoid this or do we just have to buy a new printer?A: It doesn’t sound very good, but there are some things you can do. First, open the printer in all places where you can and look carefully for anything that may be interrupting the paper feed inside of it. If you see some remains of paper gently pull it out. Then you should also do a reset of the machine to factory defaults. Unplug the power cable, press and hold «#» and «6» and plug the power back in. Hold these keys down until you see a message on the screen of the printer. Now it’s reset to factory settings, which may clear up any software issue that may have interfered. Then, if the printer still does the same in terms of paper jamming, take it in for service or buy a new one.

There was a time when Macs were something only the artistic used to own. It carried a hefty price tag, but it was heavily equipped to cater for them. It came with the coveted Power PC chip and it was capable of doing things the PC couldn’t especially for the design and print industry. One of those was the Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Back then Adobe and Apple went hand in hand. That was then. Today, Apple and Adobe act more like divorcees; bitter divorcees. And everybody knows Apple can get very bitter. But a huge part of that bitterness has a keen business sense to it.

One of the biggest drawbacks to the iPhone has been its inability to run Flash, which is a “format” developed and run by Adobe. Adobe has publicly stated that they have a version of Flash for the iPhone, but it requires Apple’s blessing to launch it. However, Apple was clear that it won’t happen. Life went on, and the iPhone went on to become a huge success, despite the lack of this feature and many others. Then Apple launched the iPad. And all of a sudden Flash became a huge thing not to have. I think that this limitation was acceptable on a phone, but on a device where web-browsing is such a huge thing, you can miss out on that much of the web.

So why won’t Flash work on both the iPhone and iPad? Simple because Apple won’t let it. Apple says that Flash is a huge resource hog and a security risk. Steve Jobs has been quoted to have said, “When a Mac crashes, more often than not, it’s because of Flash.” And that has some merit to it: I find that Flash is more likely to cause my Mac to crash than anything else out there. Tests show that video on Flash consumes 32% CPU capacity compared to 12.4% running on HTML 5. And there is a number of security issues that have been known for years that Adobe has yet to resolve. So preventing it from running on the iPhone and iPad is good thing, right? It’s not that easy.

Apple is positioning HTML 5 as the new savior. And it’s emphasizing heavily on Flash’s flaws. And though some of those flaws do exist, Flash is not the monster Apple makes it to be. Tests show that because of GPU acceleration, Flash works better on a PC than HTML 5 does. And this is due to the openness Microsoft gives Windows, and the cooperation it shows to its developers, neither of which Apple is known for. But on a small device like the iPhone or the iPad, there won’t be GPU acceleration, so it does make sense to block it off. But with Apple’s support, Adobe may be able to fix some of the flaws that Flash has on the Mac, that don’t exist on the PC, and with enough support, probably make it a good thing for the iPad and iPhone.

Apple, however, will have none of that. Apple is now on a shooting spree, and it has Flash in the crosshairs. It is going to partners that it sees as necessary, and convincing them to drop Flash and go to HTML 5. So why is Apple doing this? Simply because there is another thing that Flash does very well, and that is animation and interactive. Two things that allows people to make complex programs, including games. So if Flash worked on the iPhone, people can launch iPhone games and other programs that only require the user to go to a website to play them. That would circumvent the entire AppStore eco-system, tapping into one of Apple’s very lucrative revenue streams.

Because if the war was about a video format, than why is it only about Flash? Flash is one of the more common ones out there, but it isn’t the only one the iPhone doesn’t support. When it comes to email, for example, chances are that video will be in a WMV format, a format owned by Microsoft. And the iPhone won’t run that either. But nobody is talking about that. Instead, they listen to Apple. They see the flaws that Apple points out, and the look at the massive iPhone, and potentially the iPad, market and they want in. So what do they do? Some switch to HTML 5, some make an iPhone/iPad app, and others just make two websites.

Today, Apple and Adobe act more like divorcees; bitter divorcees.

Putting them at the forefront of use of IT in education, Gems Royal Dubai School has for over six months been running a project using Apple iPod touches and MacBooks in various ways in their activities.

The “iPodagogy project” got started last year, when Apple offered 60 iPod touches and 8 MacBooks for a project to see how Apple technology could enhance learning. All Gems schools in Dubai could bid on being a part of this project, and Westminster and Royal Dubai schools were selected to take part. Stephen Cox, Director Strategic Professional Development at Gems, said the equipment came from Apple Inc. in the US, but that Apple’s exclusive Middle East distributor, Arab Business Machines (ABM) has helped out with training and other types of support.

When I visited the school, I observed how a class in year 6 used iPod touches to learn math, and it was eye-opening. As soon as the teacher brought out the iPods, they started up their math app and then it was like nothing from the outside world would disturb them. They were so engaged by the iPod and the app that the

teacher even said that he could leave the room and they wouldn’t even notice. The technology also seemed to bring out some of the students’ competitive spirit. When they displayed their math skills in a friendly competition it was really impressive. These kids clearly know math way better than I ever did. Not all of that should necessarily be attributed to using iPods, of course, but I would venture a guess that using them has been more influential than we think.

Phil Redhead, Director of Curriculum Development and Innovation at Gems Royal Dubai School, said that the Apple equipment is in use right across the school, from students aged four up to age 15. “It’s been a fantastic success,” said Redhead, “Just some of the behaviors of students in class... is amazing. You know, the motivation, the collaborative nature of their work between the children and the on-task behaviors have been a pleasure to behold.” He added that the technology helps to put the child at the center of their learning. “They’re in control of their learning and it’s just been fantastic to see,” he said. This pilot project continues at Gems, and after evaluations they will look at how best to continue into the future. بدأ هذا المشروع الذي أطلق عليه اسم »آي بوداغوجي بروجيكت iPodagogy project« منذ حوالي سنة، عندما قامت »آبل« بتوفير 60 جهاز

»آي بود تاتش«، و8 حواسب »ماك بوك« في محاولة الكتشاف كيف يمكن لتكنولوجيا »آبل« المساعدة في مجال التعليم. قامت جميع مدارس

قوقعة من التركيز لم يتمكن أي ضجيج في العالم من تشتيت انتباهم. وأخبرنا المعلم بأنه لشدة انتباهم، لن يالحظوا غيابه لو ترك الغرفة.

تمكنت هذه التكنولوجيا من جلب الروح التنافسية للطالب. وتفاجأت عندما رأيت مستوى الرياضيات الذي يتعلمونه، فأنا متاكد بأنه أقوى

وأصعب مما تعلمته عندما كنت في عمرهم، وبالطبع ال يعود الفضل إلى األجهزة بشكل حصري، ولكن أعتقد أنها تركت تاثيرا إيجابيا.

أشار فيل ريدهيد، مدير تطوير المناهج في مدرسة »رويال دبي« إلى أن أجهزة »آبل« هي قيد االستعمال من قبل كل الفئات العمرية في

المدرسة، ويتراوح أعمار الطالب الذين يستخدمونها بين 4 سنوات و15 سنة. وعلق قائال: »لقد حققت نجاحا رائعا، وبعض سلوكيات الطالب

في الصف... هي أكثر من رائعة. االهتمام، والسلوك المتعاون الذي تبناه الطالب، وسلوكهم ناحية ما يجب أن يتموه، هو مشهد يسعدنا رؤيته«. وأضاف بأن هذه التكنولوجا تضع الطفل في المركز. حيث علق قائال: »إن

الطالب لهم التحكم الكامل بتجربة تعليمهم، وهذا لشيء رائع«.

I asked in a recent newsletter what size of notebook that readers prefer. Is it the portability of something small, say a 10 or 12 inch screen? Or is it perhaps the monstrous can-fit-everything 15 or 17 inch types? Clearly the smaller sizes are more popular in large part probably because they're cheaper. If we include netbooks, then you're talking computers from just over AED 1,000 and up. But let's face it, it's not just about price and size of the screen, it's also about portability. Take a 17 inch MacBook Pro for example. The screen is large enough to do layout and design work, serious photo and video editing and much, much more. But it's also a beast in terms of weight and it will strain you to carry it around with you all day long. Much better then, if you are going to carry a computer all day long, to chose something like the Sony Vaio X, which at less than a kilogram is light enough that you'll forget you're even carrying it

around with you. My confession is that I'm constantly torn between different notebook sizes. Currently, the computer I take with me when I'm out and about covering events or writing stories is a MacBook Air. I love it for it's portability, but battery life is questionable. Recently I've also dabbled in various netbooks, slim notebooks and even a 17 inch MacBook Pro. Apple's latest 17 inch model offers great battery life and the screen is amazing, but, let's face it, it's just borderline portable. The large screen cries out like the Sirens of greek mythology with a seductive, "Take me! I can show you everything you want on my glorious screen." Then of course there's the smaller and lighter ones that whisper just as temptingly, "Carry me! I won't break your back!" Deciding which way you want to go is not easy, and I wish you good luck with your choice. Unfortunately for me I seem to change my mind just about every day.

Well, I've done it again. I said I wouldn't, but heart and mind prevailed over financial constraints.

I bought a Macbook.

It started out innocently enough. I got tired of lugging my HP HDX18t around. It's a real powerhouse, that one, with Core 2 Quad processors with 6MB L3 cache, 6 GB of DDR3 RAM, 1GB of dedicated VRAM, and twin 500GB hard drives spinning at 5400 rpm. Simply put, it's a very fast machine, especially considering that it runs on Windows Vista Home Premium.

But battery life was a disappointing 3 hours, and it weighs a 'mere' 8.8 lbs. Not including a power brick that literally looks and weighs like one.

So, during my December vacation back home, I decided I needed something smaller. 12 inch LCD display, one of those funky new ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) notebooks that claim 8 hours of battery life, small enough to slip into a messenger bag without looking like I just robbed a bank, yet large enough to be practical for writing Shufflegazine articles, checking email and browsing the web in comfort.

So off I went, browsing through Acers, HPs, Dells, and finally settling on a Lenovo X110. I'll say this: it has an awesome keyboard and screen. But that's as much good I as I can say about it. Battery life was a dismal 4 hours at best, and Windows 7 was a little too much for the little processor. So back it went to the shop for an exchange.

Walking by the Mac corner, I noticed that a 13 inch Macbook was around AED500 more than the X110, so with a credit note in hand, I took the plunge and had the Apple guy stick in another 2GB of RAM for good measure for a total of 4GB.

I bought a MacBook

Many ask why I didn't just get the 13 inch Macbook Pro instead, with the aluminum unibody, and SD card slot. It's simple. The Macbook offers much more value for money than a 13 inch Macbook Pro. Same processor, same amount of RAM, same video card, but the Macbook Pro had a 160GB hard drive while the Macbook had a 250GB one. Upgrading RAM to 4GB and the hard drive to 250GB would have cost me another AED1,500, which costs more than a USB SD card reader.

Coming back to the Mac family was refreshing. The speed at which the Macbook boots up, the peace of mind of putting it to sleep and knowing it would wake up quickly, the sheer performance of Snow Leopard off a humble 2.26 Ghz Intel processor, and the fact that the Macbook just worked so well out of the box, all blew me away. The multitouch trackpad is a godsend, the screen is a pleasure to behold, even compared to the massive 18.4 inch HD display of the HP. Hooking up my du iPhone for internet tethering was a no-brainer and took just 30 seconds.

Battery life on the Macbook is on the high side of 5 hours, even with WiFi turned on, and it's a pretty accurate measurement.

Overall, like the iPhone, it just works. And in today's world of increasing complexities, the iPhone and the Macbook are truly different.

“Earpollution” would indicate something not very healthy for your hearing, like noise. But in the case of iFrogz it stands for good audio, and that’s also true for the CS40 headphones. These are foldable headphones, so you can stick them in your bag and won’t take up much space. They’re very comfortable to wear even for extended periods, thanks to well-padded earphones. They sit fairly tightly against the ears without pressing too hard. However, where it counts, in sound quality, I have some issues with the CS40. I’m afraid it seems like the comfortable pads covering each ear also muffle the sound a bit. The sound just isn’t as loud and clear as some other ear and headphones I’ve tried. For example, what I can experience from my Monster Turbine Gold earphones is much better than what I get from the CS40, but to be fair, they are two completely different designs and prices too. In conclusion, for the price of the CS40, even though I say sound is less than perfect, they are comfortable to wear and fold up for transport and storage, so I have to overall give them full marks.

The Garmin Asus nüvifone M10 is a product looking for a solution. It’s basically a pretty good Windows Mobile 6.5.3 smartphone and a Garmin GPS navigation device packed into one. As a smartphone it’s attractively designed with middle of the road specifications: 3.5 inch resistive display (800 x 480 pixels), 600MHz processor, 512MB RAM, Micro SD card slot, 5 megapixel camera, etc.

Personally, I find Windows Mobile 6.5.3 an outdated operating system, which would be better put out to pasture. With something like HTC’s Sense on top of it, Windows Mobile is okay, but on its own, it not much to cheer about. The resistive touchscreen is sharp and bright, but as expected it’s not as sensitive as something like Apple’s iPhone. Since the M10 runs Windows Mobile it’s almost required in some instances to use the included stylus, something that also feels outdated when looking at what today’s smartphones have to offer. However, the main benefit of Windows Mobile is that it fits into an otherwise Microsoft-dominated corporate world.

Where the M10 shines is when it comes to navigation. Think of the GPS navigation unit you probably have in your car and you get the idea. Most of that is also in the M10 with maps, driving directions, turn-by-turn navigation and more. Maps seem relatively up to date, with roads that I certainly don’t see on Google Maps on my iPhone or the navigation unit built-in to my Jeep. Very generously they have included a holder with suction cup, for mounting on a dashboard or windscreen, and a car charger with the M10.

Even though the M10 shines in the navigation department it’s hard to know why that would be a reason to buy it. The problem is obviously that you can buy a dedicated GPS unit, from Garmin if you like, with bigger screen and more functionality. All in all the M10 is a decent smartphone but no one will buy it just because of that. But if you do want a smartphone with advanced GPS navigation functionality, the M10 is a good choice.

»آبل«. وبما أن جهاز »إم ١٠« يستخدم نظام »ويندوز« فهو يجبرك في معظم األحيان على استخدام القلم المصاحب للجهاز، وهو شيء

آخر قد أعتبره غير عصري بالمرة ويمكن االستغناء عنه، خاصة إذا قارناه بما تقدمه أنواع أخرى من الهواتف الذكية اليوم. ورغم ذلك، ال يجب

VMware’s latest salvo in the desktop virtualization battle is Fusion 3.0. It seems two things were of primary concern in the new version: take advantage of improvements in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and be fully compatible with Windows 7. To put it briefly, they’ve done a good job on both fronts. Updating a virtual machine from a previous version of Fusion was no problem for me. It chugged through a Windows XP installation in short time and I was up and running. I also tried installing a new Fusion environment with Windows 7 and even that was no problem at all. The Migration Assistant can copy an entire PC to a virtual Fusion machine on your Mac using an Ethernet connection.

In terms of interface, there is a long list of new features and improvements. Unity mode- basically running Windows apps side by side with Mac apps- has received special attention, it seems. Gone are many glitches; it just works better now. A sort of Windows Start menu now sits in your Mac OS X menu bar. It’s called the Application menu and through it you control most aspects of your virtual machine. If you run Windows in full screen mode you get a toolbar almost like a Mac OS X dock, with which you can access all important functions in your virtual machine. 3D graphics seem to have gotten a push too, but for graphics intensive games there’s still no substitute for Boot Camp. Personally I prefer to run Windows from a Boot Camp partition, even with Fusion or Parallels. That way I get the best of both worlds. One interesting option is that you can

set the processor count in the Fusion preferences. So even with several multi-core processors, they can appear to Windows 7 Starter Edition as one, for example. (Starter Edition only supports single core processors.) Speaking of processors, if you run Snow Leopard in 64-bit mode you should see even better performance out of Fusion.

To sum up, Fusion 3 is an update you should get if you want to run Windows 7 or use Snow Leopard. If you don’t run either, you can happily stick with what you already have.

Finally, even though the system requirements say you need 1GB or RAM on your Mac- 2GB recommended- don’t even think about running Fusion with anything less than 4GB.

بمعظم مميزات وإعدادات اآللة االفتراضية. إن قمت بتشغيل »ويندوز« في وضعية الشاشة

Made for Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Guitar Hero series of games, Logitech has certainly done a remarkable job of mimicking a real guitar. You see, this is no cheap plastic knock-off, this is as close to the real deal as you’re going to get with a digital, wireless guitar. It is made from real wood, real metal pegs and knobs etc., and you can feel it as soon as you pick it up. This is heavy like a real guitar, and feels just like one too. I’m no experienced guitar player but with a few details difference, this is just like the real thing. It’s a wireless controller for your Xbox 360, so with two batteries inserted you can press the button and off you go. What’s missing from real guitar? The main thing is that there are no strings. With one hand, instead of pressing strings down on frets in different patters to achieve different chords, you press five different buttons. With the other hand, instead of striking the chords, you perform the same motion and the guitar reads the motions. My main reservation with this game controller is the high price and that you can basically only use it with one game. Spending money on a steering wheel, for example, may make more sense since you could use it with many games. But then who would want to play guitar with a steering wheel? If you like playing guitar and if you like Guitar Hero, this is the accessory to get, so as such it gets top marks from me.

The latest incarnation of Dell’s mini netbook is a nice step up from their first venture into this popular and profitable space. In specifications it’s a rather average netbook: Intel Atom 1.66GHz processor, 250GB hard drive, 1GB RAM, 10.1 inch screen, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, SD card slot and Windows 7 Starter Edition. This is not a powerful computer, that’s for sure, but it’ll suit you well if you want email, web, word processing and other not too demanding tasks. Battery life, with the standard battery, is about three hours on “Power saver” mode,

which reduces performance, but not to an unusable level. There’s plenty of storage space on the 250GB hard drive, and plenty of connection options with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Ethernet port. Personally I’d prefer a solid state (SSD) drive in a netbook like this, but that’d jack up the prize considerably and make it a less attractive purchase for many customers. Like many other netbooks the low screen resolution (1024 x 600 pixels) may be an issue. I’ve had to make the task bar- typically at the bottom of the screen- automatically hide

to be able to see some dialogue windows fully. In at least one application the task bar, while visible, covers the OK and Cancel buttons in the Preference dialogue. Another problem is Windows 7 Starter Edition. It’s very limited in various ways and you’re likely to want to upgrade to a more useful edition, which then of course adds cost. But since Dell has been pretty aggressive in their Mini 10 pricing, the diminutive netbook is still a very good alternative if you’re looking for some simple computing on the go.

Plasmas and LCD TVs have traditionally had their benefits and drawbacks, but the lines have blurred considerably over the last few years. LG’s PQ70 42 inch plasma TV is a good example of a budget-oriented plasma TV. Although not exactly “borderless” like some of LG’s other TVs, the PQ70 has a smooth transition from panel to bezel giving it a good look and a stylish design. It has the typical TV setup with most connections on the back and some on one side. You will find most anything you need: 3 HDMI inputs, 2 component inputs, PC input (Mini D-Sub), 3 compos-ite inputs, as well as one USB 2.0 port. You can play media (MP3, JPG, AVI, DivX, XviD, MPEG4) from an attached USB storage device, which is very practical. One final connection worth mentioning is Bluetooth; you can connect a Bluetooth headset or transfer MP3 and JPG files. SD (Standard Definition) video from cable, satellite or DVD looks very good on the PQ70; colors are rich and motion is sharp. When you play back HD video- I tried from computer as well as from Blu-Ray player- it’s a different story. The PQ70 has a native pixel resolution of 1024 x 768 and apparently the PQ70 doesn’t downsize as well as it upsizes. In brief, if you’re in the market for a plasma TV, and you don’t watch much HD content yet, the PQ70 will be a good choice.

The mighty plumber Mario might have squashed the titular nimble hedgehog in the battle of the platform superstars, but we’ll always have a soft spot for the lovable Sonic. In this latest console effort, Sega brings an all-star cast from titles such as Sonic, Virtua Fighter, House of the Dead, Super Monkey Ball and Samba De Amigo for a cutesy, but fast-paced racer in the style of Mario Kart. At first, we were tempted to write it off as a late attempt to follow in the steps of Mario Kart, but five minutes into the game we found ourselves impressed by how good the gameplay actually is. We started off with the single player mode, which is divid-ed into the Grand Prix, Single Race and Missions. The Grand Prix is where you’ll find the majority of the ac-tion, with different cups to compete for. Each cup will see you racing over four different tracks. You rack up points for the position you finish the race in. The points add up in each race and your overall score will deter-mine how you are placed in the cup. The Single Race mode is a quick race option, if you don’t really want to sit through an entire cup. Missions are short races with specific objectives such as collecting items in a certain amount of time, or getting a certain amount of drift score. Each race you play also gives you points, which can be used to unlock special characters. The fast

paced action in Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing makes this game a joy to play. The controls in the game are also incredibly fluid. Aside from the fast-paced racing action, you also get plenty of power ups within the game, which can be collected on the racetrack. The power ups range from speed boosts that help you go faster, to rockets which can be fired at opponents in front of you to help you take the lead. Each character also has a special move that can be used within the game to give you an advantage over other players. The game also has a multiplayer mode where you can battle it out against a friend split screen, or go online and race it out with others around the world. The game does have a few faults though. Most characters play pretty much the same, and other than appear-ance there isn’t much that distinguishes one from the other. The online play only gives you access to quick races. It would have been nice to compete for various cups online, or have a league to compete in. Overall, Sega has done a good job in coming up with a racer that’s easy to get the hang of and loads of fun to play. If you’re tired of games that challenge your intelligence and simply want to kick back and play a game that’s simple and just plain enjoyable, you’ll love Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing.

This successor to 2008’s Army of Two revolves around two rough-looking characters, Tyson Rios and Elliot Salem, who have to fight their way through a Shanghai that apparently is going through some major terrorist attack, causing dramatic destruction of the city with buildings falling down. There are of course bad guys everywhere with weapons of all kinds that you have to use your tactical skills to overcome, rushing head-on with guns blazing is not likely to get you anywhere.

In some places it feels very scripted and I would have loved to see more freedom in how to take on a level. In one particular place, where both players have to place some device on two columns right next to one another, I just couldn’t get the other computer-controlled player to do his bit, so I had to go back to the previously saved point and start over.

This is a third-person shooter, you see your player from behind, where you play in cooperation with another character, thus the “army of two.” You can play two players on one console in split-screen, or online. If you play alone the other character is controlled by the computer and you can order him to do things like attack, not to move, etc. You can customize weapons, including the looks of them, and

as you collect funds you can acquire more advanced weapons.

Graphics are overall good, with some glitches, and the sound contributes to making this an enjoyable game. At least in parts, the environment around you feels very real and in some action sequences it all adds to the thrill.

Although it doesn’t set any new standards to which other games will be held, all in all, this is a fun co-operative shooter.

تتعاون مع الشخصية األخرى في تنفيذ المهام المختلفة. ومن هنا جاء اسم اللعبة »آرمي أوف تو« أو جيش االثنان. يمكنك أيضا اختيار اللعب

الجماعي )مع العب واحد( من خالل اقتسام الشاشة أو عبر اإلنترنت. أما إذا اخترت اللعب بمفردك، يقوم جهاز الكمبيوتر بالتحكم بالالعب اآلخر

ويظل بإمكانك إعطاءه بعض األوامر مثل الهجوم، أو التوقف وغيرها. تمنحك اللعبة أيضا إمكانية تغيير شكل أسلحتك أو شراء أسلحة

If you live in the Middle East and have played multiplayer games online with any more than sixteen players, you’ve most probably experienced terrible lags. Along comes the promise of multiplayer online gameplay with up to 256 players on screen. Zipper’s Massive Action Game (MAG), exclusive to Sony’s Playstation platform, manages to do just that though, and with aplomb. We played the game on a 2mbps connection without any lag whatso-ever in game and there haven’t been any complaints from users on a slower connection either. Understandably, it took a while to connect to the actual game though as you have to wait for all players to join.

That amazing feat aside, the game also has a lot on offer in terms of storyline and gameplay. Here’s the gist of the story: The world’s nations have agreed that as a measure to enforce peace, they will maintain their militaries to just the bare minimum. Nations are not allowed to send its military outside its borders. Instead of leading to an age of peace and harmony, the forced peace tactics

lead to a rise in private military corporations (henceforth known as PMC), that work for the highest bidder. Three primary PMC factions arise - the Valor, Raven and SVER. These PMCs engage in a «Shadow War» -- a battle against each other to compete for contracts. In the game, you must choose a faction and must help your side win battles against the other PMCs. Each side is fairly balanced, so it doesn’t really matter which side you choose. They all play in a similar fashion as well.

العالم قد اتفقت على تقليل جيوشها إلى حد أدنى وذلك كوسيلة لفرض سالم عالمي. كما أصبح محرما على أية دولة إرسال قواتها

خارج حدودها المقررة. وبدال من أن يسود السالم والوئام كنتيجة لتلك ل جيوش أجيرة القوانين الدولية، أدت صرامتها إلى قيام شركات تمو

أو مرتزقة )متعارف عليها في اللعبة باسم »بي إم سي PMC«(، وهي جيوش تعمل لصالح من يدفع السعر األعلى. تنقسم جيوش الـ »بي إم

سي« إلى ثالث فصائل وهي الـ»فيلور Valor«، والـ»ريفنRaven«، والـ»إس في إي آر SVER« التي ما تلبث أن تشتبك بحروب في ما بينها تسمى حرب

الظل Shadow War صراعا على عقود للعمل أي القتال. ويتمثل دورك داخل اللعبة باالنتماء إلى أحد تلك الفصائل ومساعدتها في معاركها ضد الفصائل األخرى. جدير بالذكر أن جميع الفصائل متوازنة القوة ولن

You start off by playing suppression or sabotage missions, which are 64 player battles to hone your skills. Here you gain XP and level up, in order to gain access to the next level of battles. As you level up, you get points to spend on customization and upgrades. Earn enough of a leadership bonus and you’ll be able to command a squad or platoon.

On a visual front, the game scores well in terms of graphics. The characters are detailed, and distinguishable and large, well-designed battlegrounds make for some excellent FPS (First Person Shooter) action. However, the levels can look rather bland after a while with the same style of terrain.

Like most online multiplayer FPS games, MAG is what you make of it, and the experience of the game depends more so on the players than the actual game. MAG is a squad-based FPS game and hence you have to embrace the spirit of team play. If you’re the type who likes to go Rambo and kill everyone

on your own, chances are you’re going to get owned so many times that you’ll be quickly frustrated with the game.

We have to congratulate Zipper Interactive for making a 256-player FPS game a reality. It’s a stellar effort buy all means, but it’s not the best FPS we have ever played. Your gaming experience depends on what you and the other players in the game make of it, but if you’re tired of playing with bots, you have to try MAG.

Pretty much everyone has some sort of digital music player whether it’s portable or not. You could of course play music in digital format with your computer, but it’s not something you’ll take with you anywhere. Most mobile and smartphones today can also play music, with some you can even buy and download music without using a computer. The lines are also blurring between devices that can play music and video as more and more of them can do both, like Apple’s iPod touch. Even something like Sony’s PSP can play music and video in addition to games. In this article we take a look at some of the options in the local market for portable digital music players as well as online music stores. I’ve tried to stick to dedicated music playing devices, but as I said, the lines are blurring.

إن اختيار الجهاز المناسب لك ليس أمرا سهال مع العدد الهائل من الخيارات

المتوفرة في األسواق. ولنساعدك على اتخاذ الخيار الصحيح، سنقوم

Picking the right portable digital music player for you is not that easy. Here we present you with a number of things you may want to consider in your purchase decision. It’s likely that not any one of them will make you buy a particular device. Rather, it’ll be a combination of things.

Storage type and size: Your choice is between flash-based storage and hard drive-based storage. With flash you’re likely to not get that much space, but you don’t have to worry about moving parts that can get damaged when a player gets thrown around. You get more space for a lower price with a hard drive, but it’s also more sensitive to sudden movements. For example, in Apple’s current lineup you get up to 64GB of flash-based storage in iPod touch, but 120GB in the hard drive-based iPod classic.

Screen size and video: Many digital music players can also play video. If that’s important to you, you’ll want to look at a larger screen, at least 3 inches across. If you’re only interested in music, a smaller screen that just shows some basic song information is perfectly adequate. Touch screens are getting increasingly popular, spearheaded by Apple’s iPod touch. With a larger screen, a touch interface is almost required today. The interface on a smaller screen can be controlled in other ways.

Media compatibility: There are two things to be concerned with here: where you’re likely to get your music from, and what music you already have. If you have digital music already in a particular format, you need a player that supports that format. If you’re going to buy music from a particular source, you need a player that supports that source. Recently online music stores seem to increasingly favor open solutions, meaning no DRM (Digital Rights Management) in the music files, which means you can use them on any player. More on that in a section further on in this article.

With Apple’s iPod it’s simple, it works with iTunes, which in turn runs on Mac OS X and Windows. When it comes to the others they typically mount on your desktop like any other flash memory device and you can drag and drop compatible file formats to the device and then play them, whether it’s music or video. What is true, however, is that the software that comes with these devices is usually Windows only.

We will now take a quick look at select digital portable music players on offer in the local market from Apple, Creative, iRiver, Samsung, SanDisk and Sony. There are other brands and models, but we focused on these. We should note that one popular digital music player is missing from our list and that is Microsoft’s Zune. Zune was omitted since it’s not officially sold in the Middle East.

SonySony’s products typically combine stylish design and advanced functionality. That’s also true for their MP3 offerings. The basic B-series is compact and affordable, but still manages to include things like FM radio and recording. It’s small as a USB stick and comes in a variety of colors, so you can make a fashion statement with it. Stepping up a notch to the E-series, we see bigger screens and the ability to play video. Sony’s flagship mediaplayer is the X-series with up to 32GB storage space, advanced audio functionality and Wi-Fi for web browsing and more.

CreativeCreative entered the digital portable audio market in 1999, beating Apple by a few years, and they still offer some cool products. Even though it’s not much larger than someone’s thumb, the Zen Stone has speakers and comes in a variety of colors. The mid-range Mosaic has a simple, but effective interface and can even do voice recording. Zen X-Fi 2 is the best Creative has to offer, and with expandable memory (Micro SD card) at a very competitive price, it’s something worth checking out. It plays video, you can listen to FM radio and more.

AppleApple’s lineup is arguably the best known of all the brands. Even though they weren’t the first in the MP3 player scene, they have arguably had the biggest impact with their iPods. From the tiny shuffle without a screen to the massive storage of the classic, Apple’s got it covered. In its latest iteration the slim nano got FM radio, video recording capability and more. If it’s storage space you’re after the 120GB in the classic should be more than enough. The classic is also the only player we’ve mentioned that has a hard drive for storage, all others are flash based. Lastly, if you want an iPhone without the phone part, look at the iPod touch. Up to 64GB storage, touch screen and you can run (almost) all the apps from the App Store.

SamsungSamsung has clearly used much of their experience from smartphones in creating their MP3 players. (Or is it the other way around?) This is most evident in the YP-R1, which borrows Samsung’s TouchWiz interface from their smartphones. You can enjoy music as well as watch DivX movies on the 2.6 inch touchscreen. YP-U5 is as small as a flash memory stick with FM radio, available in five different colors, and has a built-in USB port. The YP-S5 probably has the most unique design of all the players shown here. It’s a sort of slide-out design you may recognize from some smartphones. Basically half of the S5, the bottom part, slides out and sits at an angle, revealing speakers. It’s a pretty clever concept, really.

Nokia X6We think Nokia X6 is worth a special mention even though it's really a smartphone with music playing capabilities. The same is true, we suppose, for the iPhone 3GS, but there is no iTunes music service in the Middle East so we're excluding that for now from this article. The X6 is a nice smartphone in its own right, but it's the ties to the Comes With Music service that makes it especially attractive. (See further on in this article.) The capacitive touchscreen (360 x 640 pixels) is very bright and clear. A five megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, autofocus and dual LED flash should keep you snapping away. The price in UAE for Nokia X6 is AED 2199, which included a one-year subscription to Comes Wiht Music.

So you have a digital music player. Now, where do you get the music from to put on this device? Obviously if you have a music CD collection you can rip them into MP3s and put them onto your computer to be transferred to the mobile device. But if that’s all you do you miss out on some of the functionality of going digital. What you really want is to be able to get your music, buy it most likely, from an online music store so you can bypass the CDs all together, other than for albums you already own.

iTunes We have to mention iTunes even though there is no iTunes for music, movies and TV for Middle East customers. There are ways you can buy iTunes credits online or, of course, if you happen to travel to an iTunes country. It would seem that with iPad coming, Apple should hurry up to bring full iTunes to the region, but we see no signs that that is happening.

GetmoGetmo (www.getmo.com) is a joint venture between Arvato Mobile Middle East (AMME) and Abu Dhabi Media Company (ADMC). The Getmo online store offers music, movies and mobile content like ringtones, wallpaper etc. Single songs cost $0.69 and there's also a membership option for $4.99 for which you get to keep 15 songs. Unfortunately the site is sparse on information and I kept getting «The requested page is not available at this time» when browsing the store, setting up an account and attempting to buy music. All music is protected by Windows Media DRM and non-Windows users need not bother with Getmo.

QTelLaunching “later this year”, Qatar Telecom's announced partnership with Universal Music will bring a subscription music service to QTel customers. We don't really know more than that, but it's another sign that online music is coming to the Middle East. QTel stated at the Mobile World Congress that they will offer some 120,000 tracks from 3,500 artists including a “domestic Arabic repertoire.” Dr. Nasser Marafih, CEO of Qtel Group, said that the music service will run on “all platforms.”

NokiaArguably of most interest right now in the Middle East is Nokia's online offerings. Introduced to the region with Nokia's X6 is Comes With Music (CWM). Basically, when you buy an X6 you get 12 months of unlimited, free downloads from Nokia's Comes With Music store with around four million tracks. You can download and re-download as much as you like to your X6 or the PC linked to the account. The music is DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected and the PC player with which you can download and listen to music with is Windows only. Presumably that’s because it uses Microsoft’s Windows Media DRM. The Windows app, Ovi Player, is a free download from Nokia and in functionality it’s basically like iTunes, but simpler. You can browse around the music offerings, listen to previews of songs and download individual songs or entire albums. Before you start your unlimited downloading you have to enter a code that you get inside the box with the X6. After that your unlimited downloads are tied to the X6 device, that PC and your Ovi account.

Nokia's regular online music store (music.ovi.com), which has existed for a few years now in the UAE, is now DRM-free. This means you can buy music from there on any platform, not just Windows, and you get DRM-free MP3 files.

Gaming Laptops

While its true that desktops will continue to offer the highest performance for games, notebooks have come a long way, to a point where they are sophisticated enough to offer pretty good gaming performance as well. In this article we look at some of the laptops that are perfectly adequate for gaming and available in the Middle East. We also explore some of the options that you should consider before heading down this road. Know this before you start- gaming laptops still demand a premium price so expect your bank account to lose some weight if you want to get one of these.

The first thing you need to decide is the size of the screen. When it comes to gaming and movies, the rule of the thumb is that they look better on bigger screens. With the Alienware M11x arriving on the scene, you now have a choice of starting with a screen size of as low as 11 inches and going as high as almost 19 inches. Bigger laptops generally have better specs as there is more room inside them to cool higher-end components, but have the disadvantage of being very big and bulky to carry around, as well as offering a low battery life. Thus you need to decide on weather you will keep your laptop on a desk and plugged in most of the time, or carry it around with you for a quick fix on your gaming addiction.

Another thing to keep in mind is that notebooks arent as easily upgradeable as desktops, especially the CPU and GPU, so make sure that you budget for a notebook with a Quad Core CPU and the fastest graphics card. RAM and Hard Drives can be upgraded so they should be given a secondary thought, but while we’re on that subject, I would say that you should equip your notebook with 4GB RAM and a 7200RPM drive if possible. Solid State Drives (SSDs) are insanely fast which will help with loading times for your games, but they are also super expensive at the moment and generally not a standard option. Wait for a year or so and you will see a reduction in prices and increase in capacities.

So lets look at some of the gaming laptops out there- we’ll start with the smallest in size and move up.

Mac miniThe introductory desktop Mac model, petite as it is, still packs quite a punch. It comes with a Core 2 Duo processor of up to 2.66GHz, which is plenty for most of what you’d want to do. And with up to 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive, and SuperDrive as standard, the mini is well prepared for many tasks. It’s limitation lies in that it’s hard to upgrade. Your only option is pretty much to connect things externally via USB or FireWire. There’s even a Mac mini especially meant to be used as a server. Few things are certain when it comes to computers, but I think most of us would agree that they will over time get slower and produce more and more little nagging issues. Although Windows 7, launched in October 2009, seems to use resources more efficiently than the previous Windows versions, and for most users runs faster, it still could do with some tweaking and maintenance. With this article we want to give you some ideas of how you can make your Windows 7 run a bit better.

First: backupFirst a word of caution. None of what we mention in this article should, in normal circumstances, cause anything bad to happen to your PC, but as always, you should back up your data first.

Keep drivers up to dateDrivers are those little pieces of software that help the operating system talk to hardware components. If they are not up to date the hardware may not work at all, work slowly or cause other kinds of problems. Windows Update tries to keep drivers up to date, but something like DriverMax (www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax) can scan your system and check if there are any more recent drivers available.

Looking good or running fastIf you have a fairly new PC with a good graphics card you can probably ignore this section. However, if things happen a bit too slowly on your PC you may want to adjust the visual settings. There’s no doubt that Windows 7 looks good with all the visual effects turned on, but it also affects performance, especially on less powerful computers. In the System section of the Control Panel, click on Advanced System Settings. When the System Properties window opens, look for the Advanced tab. Then click on the Settings box so the Performance Options appear. Here you can uncheck any option that you don’t want to be in effect. I’d recommend you find out what works best for your PC by enabling and disabling various options.

Control what runs at startupThe more software you install on your PC the more things will run the background, taking up memory and potentially causing problems. Of course not all software will run some component in the background, but many will. These things that run in the background are typically started when Windows starts up, and it’s relatively easy for you to find out what starts up along with Windows and stop them from doing so, if you don’t want it anymore. Some software you install will put some background utility on your computer that helps the main application work faster. If you start that software often, that may be a good idea, but if you only run it once in a while it may be better to disable the background component. One good example is iTunesHelper.exe. It helps iTunes start when an iPod is connected and supposedly also start and run faster. I would say that for most of you, you can safely prevent this from running without any notice to your operations. To control what runs at startup click Start and type in “msconfig” in the “Search programs and files” box and press enter. A window will appear and then click the Startup tab. On that tab page you’re especially interested in the Command column. If you’re not sure whether you can remove something safely, do a search on the web for the name and you should be able to find an answer.

Clean up installed softwareEspecially when you buy a new PC, the computer comes with a range of software installed. Some of it you can probably delete right away and never miss, others you might want to remove and replace with something better. Just in case you later want to put any of it back, make sure you have it on a disc so you can reinstall it if you like. The disk space this software takes up is probably not that significant; today’s PCs come with big hard drives. What may matter is software that runs in the background, taking up memory and potentially causing conflicts. This could involve virus scanners, disk utilities, backup apps and more. One easy way to see some of what is running is to take a look at the system tray, typically at the bottom right of the screen. If you have icons there that you don’t recognize, click or right click on them to see what software it is. If it’s something you don’t need, consider uninstalling it.

Defragment hard disksA file that is stored on a hard disk is not stored in one consecutive space. Rather, pieces can be scattered throughout the disk. The more scattered files are the more fragmented the disk is, and the more affected performance will be in a negative way. Microsoft has improved disk fragmentation in Windows 7. More files than in Vista can be moved and optimized and multiple drives can be defragmented at the same time. You find the Disk Defragmenter application in Start menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools. There you can run a manual analysis or defragmentation or schedule automatic defragmentation.

Spring clean hard disksSpring is actually upon us; I’m sure you can tell from the increasingly hotter weather. Cleaning up your hard disks is a good idea, not just in spring. With today’s big hard disks, it’s less of an issue than it used to be that computers run slow because of almost-full hard disks. You can of course try to remove files you don’t need anymore yourself, but there’s actually a utility in Windows 7 that can help you. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Here you can select what you want to delete and how much space you’re likely to recover. If you installed Windows 7 as an upgrade from Vista, you should see a folder called C:\Windows.old on your startup disk. That’s the old operating system and if your new installation is working well you can safely delete this folder, thereby recovering quite a bit of space.

More memoryThis should perhaps be at the top of your list, because adding more RAM is probably the easiest and quickest way to boost your PC’s performance. Windows 7 will certainly run with 1GB RAM, but generally more is better. If you can manage at east 2GB, you’ll see it makes a significant difference. See, what happens in Windows 7 and other operating systems is that applications and data you’re working with are stored in RAM. If the PC doesn’t have enough real RAM for the apps and data, it’ll send the “overflowing” data to the hard disk. A hard disk is much slower than RAM though.
