في بداية هذا العدد، نرغب باإلعالن عن تغييرين في مجلتنا، أحدهما قد يكون معروفا لبعض قرائنا، بينما قد ال يعلم المعظم عن اآلخر.

أول هذين التغييرين، هو شعارنا الجديد »مجلة عالم التكنولوجيا« بدال من »مجلة عالم آبل«. في الواقع، لن يحمل هذا الشعار الجديد

العديد من التغييرات على المجلة، حيث سنحرص على عدم تجاهل أي أخبار عن »آبل«، فال داعي للقلق من ذلك. ولكن المجلة ستحتوي على

مقاالت أكثر عن الحواسب األخرى وعن عالم ألعاب الفيديو. الدافع وراء التغيير هو إيضاح رسالة المجلة، ولعكس التغييرات التي حصلت على

المجلة خالل الشهور األخيرة، وذلك من أجل المعلنين والقراء على حد سواء؛ حيث ال يخفى على أحد بأن المجلة قد احتوت على العديد من

المقاالت التي لم تتعلق مباشرة بـ »آبل«، وبأن برنامج البودكاست »تك تشات«، يتحدث عن عالم التكنولوجيا بشكل عام.

التغيير الثاني الذي سيالحظه من يقرأ هذا العدد هو تعاملنا مع فريق )Tbreak.com( الذي سيزودنا ببعض المحتوى. لقد عمل عباس وفريقه

جاهدين على توسعة شبكة مواقعهم، ونعتقد بأن عملنا معا يدا بيد سيجعل من الطرفين أكثر قوة، لنصل إلى قاعدة أوسع من القراء، ولنتمكن من تغطية المزيد عن عالم التكنولوجيا. وهذا القرار نبع من

اهتمام الفريقين القوي بكل ما يتعلق بالتكنولوجيا، سواء كان ذلك عن الحواسب أو ألعاب القيديو أو أجهزة الهواتف المتحركة.

نأمل بأن التغييرات التي جلبناها ستخلق مجلة أفضل لقرائنا. وكما هو األمر دائما، نحن ننتظر آراءكم بفارغ الصبر، سواء كان ذلك عن المجلة المطبوعة، أو الموقع أو برنامج البودكاست. نحن نسعى لجعل هذه المجلة ملجأكم الرئيسي لكل ما يتعلق بالتكنولوجيا في المنطقة،

ولن نستطيع تحقيق ذلك دون مساعدتكم.

We have a couple of interesting things to announce to you in this issue. Some of it you probably already know about, but some is hopefully new to you. To start off with, we’ve changed our tag line from “Apple lifestyle magazine” to “Tech lifestyle magazine”. We’re certainly not leaving Apple behind though, so don’t worry. In practice, don’t expect any dramatic changes in content because of that, but there will be some more PC and gaming content coming in to the magazine, and already in this issue you can see some of that. We do this to clarify the profile of the magazine for advertisers as well as readers. In truth we’ve already had a lot of articles that are more “general tech” than just “Apple”, and the podcast has been “Tech Chat” from the start. Just look at our recent reporting on Nokia in Beirut and the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and you get the idea. Another notable change is that we’re now working with the guys at Tbreak.com. Abbas and his team have been doing a great job with their growing network of sites, but working with them in various ways, especially on sharing content, will mean we’re stronger together and can reach out to more readers and cover more of the tech world. This is a decision ruled by a strong sense of community and passion for technology. Both Shufflegazine and Tbreak have a strong foundation in community and we’re all crazy about gadgets and other tech, whether it be computers, gaming consoles, mobiles phones or whatever. As we continue to develop Shufflegazine we hope you will keep giving us your feedback. We want Shufflegazine, whether it’s in print, web site, podcast or iPhone app, to be the best place in the region for tech, but we need your help to make that happen.

Borrowing features like Faces and Places from the recent version of iPhoto, Apple announced version 3 of Aperture, their professional photo editing and management software. Apple claims over 200 new features in the updated Aperture with Brushes, Adjustment Presets and new Slideshows being among the major ones. With the new Brushes functionality users can simply paint over parts of their photos to add effects like dodge, burn, blur, etc. Apple claims this is a lot easier than working with masks and layers. Adjustment Presets allows users to apply specific styles or looks to a complete photograph with just one click of the mouse. Photographers can use the built-in presets, make their own and even share them with others. Slideshows in Aperture 3 can combine photos, audio, text and video. Pick one of the included themes or customize your own with transitions, backgrounds, etc. and export them to iTunes or share them online with Facebook and other sites. Middle East availability and pricing was not know at the time of writing, but Aperture 3 has a suggested US retail price of $199 and existing Aperture users can upgrade for a suggested retail price of $99. The opening games for the World Game Championship 2010 (WGC) were held at the Star Atrium in Dubai Mall on 18th and 19th February 2010. The second round of the championship will be held in April at Bawadi Mall, Al Ain; the third round takes place at Al Wahda Mall in Abu Dhabi; the final two rounds of the games will take place at Mall of the Emirates in October and the Dubai World Trade Center in November. The organizers expect over 10,000 gamers to attend the event this year.

The WGC will include three major tournaments running at the same time; the World Cyber Games National Finals (exclusive for Emiratis), and WGC Open Championship and WGC Inter-collegiate Games (open to all nationalities). The winners of the World Cyber Games National Finals will represent the United Arab Emirates in the Grand Finals that will take place in Los Angeles, California this September. This year’s opening games include Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, Street Fighter 4 and Counter Strike 1.6. Over AED 100,000 worth of prizes are set for this year’s tournament. Gamers can register for the tournament online at www.gameexpo.ae.

Nokia introduces unlimited Comes With Music download service and X6 phone

Putting on a great show in Beirut, featuring Lebanese singer Melhem Zein, Nokia introduced the Comes With Music service to the Middle East. Tied to the purchase of the X6 mobile phone, Comes With Music offers customers unlimited downloads from Nokia’s library of about four million songs for 12 months. After the year is up the customer can keep the songs for as long as they want even though all songs in Comes With Music are DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected. Nokia is positioning their Ovi brand as the center of the company’s

digital lifestyle offering and their Windows-only Ovi Player is the home of Comes With Music on a computer. The service doesn’t require a computer though, as users can download individual songs as well as complete albums directly from their X6 phones. Music can be shared between active Comes With Music phones. Jake Larsen, Head of Music, Nokia MEA, said “You can download all the tracks, it’s all yours and you get to keep it. It doesn’t go away, you do not lose access to those tracks.”

Also in Beirut, Frederic Copper-Royer, Nokia Music Manager MENA, said that all tracks now available in Nokia’s Music Stores- Nokia refers to them as “a la carte”- including the UAE one, will from “end of February” be DRM free. Tracks can be purchased and downloaded as regular, non-protected MP3 files using a web browser. He confirmed that this means that Mac users and users of web browsers other than Internet Explorer will from them be able to purchase and enjoy music from Nokia’s music store. An obvious question that has no answer as of yet is what this means for Apple’s iTunes, which has yet to arrive in the Middle East. We hope to return soon with a full review of the Comes With Music service and the X6 phone.

»نوكيا« عن خدمتها »أغاني بال حدود« في الشرق األوسط. هذه الخدمة المرتبطة بشراء هاتف »إكس X6 6«، تمكن المستخدم من تحميل

ما يرغب به من األغاني من مكتبة »نوكيا« التي تحتوي على 4 ماليين أغنية، وذلك لمدة 12 شهرا. بعد مرور السنة، سيتمكن المستخدم من

a la carte«(، ومن ضمنها األغاني في المحل اإلماراتي، ستتوفر منذ

»نهاية فبراير« بشكل حر بالكامل دون أن تخضع لقوانين إدارة الحقوق الرقمية. يمكن شراء األغاني هذه بصيغة إم بي ثري MP3 عادية

وغير محمية من خالل متصفح اإلنترنت. وأكد أن مستخدمي »ماك«، ومستخدمي برامج تصفح اإلنترنت غير »إنترنت إكسبلورر«، سيتمكنون

DISTREE XXL is an annual invitation-only trade show held in Monaco, that is targeted to bring together IT and consumer electronics manufacturers/vendors with leading distributors from the regions of Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) to give each an opportunity to make agreements and grow their businesses. It’s an event where deals can be initiated that will bring the latest in tech tools and gadgets from the companies that make them to the stores where you buy them. Shufflegazine attended DISTREE XXL to see what new tech products we might soon be seeing in the Gulf Region. On display at the event were interesting new products from companies such as Sitecom, Danew, Tunçmatik, A.C. Ryan, Pat Says Now and QDOS. Dubai-based vendor Promate was in attendance as well, and won the EMEA Vendor Channel Initiative of the Year Award at the 2010 EMEA Channel Academy Awards ceremony held during the event. We’re looking forward to reviewing many of the products seen at DISTREE XXL as they become available in our region.

2800 من المدراء التنفيذيين، و2400 من الصحافة واإلعالم، وشهد العديد من اإلعالنات المهمة عن منتجات وخدمات جديدة. قدم مدير

»مايكروسوفت« التنفيذي نظام »ويندوز فون 7« الذي سيحل محل نظام »ويندوز موبايل« القديم. وسيركز النظام الجديد على جلب تجربة ممتدة للمستخدم، مع خدمات متوافقة بشكل تام وبيئة

The Mobile World Congress took place in Barcelona in February and Shufflegazine was there covering the events and announcements. Expecting an estimated 50,000 attendees, including 2,800 CEOs and 2,400 press and media, the four days saw a number of important product and service announcements. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer led the company’s unveiling of Windows Phone 7 Series, the successor to the aging Windows Mobile platform. The focus of 7 Series is to provide a consistent user experience, deep integrated services and a strong ecosystem for all partners. HTC showed off an updated HTC Sense interface and three new smartphones. Among the new smartphones you can find HTC Desire, which is basically the same device as Google Nexus One with some changes including an optical trackpad. Samsung also showed off a new smartphone. It’s called the Wave and runs Samsung’s own Bada software. We also want to mention the announced collaboration between Intel and Nokia. They’re creating a new software platform for any mobile device by combining Maemo and Moblin. From the region, Qatar-based Qtel Group announced a partnership with Universal Music to offer an unlimited music download service later this year. Qtel also unveiled that they’re working on a mobile social networking aggregation service. It will run as an app on a number of mobile platforms, including Android, iPhone, Symbian and Windows Mobile. Etisalat announced that they’ve now got 100 million subscribers across their network. On March 1st, Dubai-based Infinitec unveiled their IUM, Infinite USB Memory, to the world. Shipping in July this year at an estimated retail price of under $130, the IUM is very unique product with a wide range of applications. Basically it’s a device that looks like a regular USB flash memory that you can insert into anything with a USB port such as computers, printers, projectors, TVs, gaming consoles and more. The host device will see it as any other flash memory and you can configure it to appear as any size you want. You do this configuration from a Windows PC running Infinitec’s “Infinite Portal” application. From the portal software you specify what files and folders on the PC that should be available through the IUM. يبدو أن عشاق ألعاب الفيديو لن يتمكنو من تجربة لعبة »دانتيس إنفرنو Dante’s Inferno«، وذلك على إثر قرار »إي إيه EA« بعدم إطالق اللعبة

في دولة اإلمارات العربية المتحدة. وفقا لـ »إي إيه« فقد جاء هذا القرار

EA keeps UAE away from HellLooks like gamers in the UAE will not be taking a journey to hell through Dante’s Inferno, as EA has decided not to release the game in the UAE. According to EA, they release games in the region keeping in mind consumer tastes and preferences. Seems like they thought this particular game didn’t quite fit Middle Eastern tastes. However, news of Dante’s Inferno not making it to this region is not surprising as similarly themed games such as God of War and Darksiders have also faced a ban.

Heavy Rain, another highly anticipated game, was banned in February by the National Media Council in UAE.

Microsoft to discountin-ue Xbox live for original Xbox

From April 15, 2010, Microsoft will cut off Xbox Live support from the original Xbox, finally putting the much loved and still very popular console to rest. Major Nelson of Xbox says: “I wanted to let you know that... Microsoft will discontinue Xbox LIVE service for original Xbox consoles and games, including Xbox 1 games playable on Xbox 360.”

Splinter Cell: Conviction Set for AprilUbisoft has finally got a solid release date set for its awaited stealth-action Splinter Cell: Conviction. Instead of issuing a press release with the date, they came up with a rather special method to announce it. They literally set it in stone. Folks at IGN, Gamespot and other major online publications were sent a rock with the release date carved in big bold letters: 4.13.10. So the much anticipated next outing of Sam Fisher will be releasing on April 13, 2010 exclusively for Microsoft platforms- the PC and Xbox 360.

هذان المثاالن يعبران وبدقة عن مدى انتشار وتغلغل »آبل« كعالمة تجارية في ثقافتنا الشعبية. قد ال تكون أكثر العالمات التجارية شهرة،

ولكنها خلقت لنفسها صورة رمزية ذات معنى، أكثر من غيرها من العالمات التجارية. إن وجودي في ذلك الباص، وتجوالي في بيروت، كشف

لي عالما من اإلعالنات الخارجية لم أشهد له مثيال. وبالرغم من أنني لم أرى إعالنات لـ»آبل« كشركة، رأيت العديد من منتجات »آبل« في إعالنات شركات أخرى، مثل إعالن عن »آي بود« لعيد فالنتين، وسلك يو إس بي

تستحق »آبل« مكانا بين هذه العالمات التجارية، وأتوقع أن تستمر هذه العالمة التجارية بالنمو في أهميتها في السنوات المقبلة. مؤخرا تم

اإلعالن عن »آي باد iPad«، الذي وبحسب توقعاتي سيبدأ بالتسلل إلى ثقافتنا الشعبية، والتي تشكل اإلعالنات جزءا منها، مثله مثل منتجات

»آبل« األخرى.

While sightseeing recently in Beirut, the tour guide asked me what publication I was from. Everyone in our party was in Lebanon for a Nokia event and, so the bus we traveled on that day was full of journalists, bloggers and other media. I answered the tour guide that I was from a magazine that writes mostly about Apple stuff. He looked at me strangely for a second before the coin dropped and he said, "oh, I get it, not fruit." Apparently he had just a day or so before read some news about something concerning local farmers and imported apples, so his mind was immediately drawn to fruit. Reading this you may come to think of the scene from Forrest Gump where his friend invested money in "that fruit company." Both these examples show how wide spread in pop culture Apple as a brand has become. It's far from the best known brand in the world, but it has an image, it stands for something, much more so than most other brands. Riding that bus in and around Beirut made me experience the ad-crazy surroundings of what must be more outdoor advertising than anywhere else. I didn't see any Apple-specific ads but there were plenty of examples of Apple in ads like an iPod in a Valentine's day ad and an Apple USB cable in a health care ad. All the usual advertisers were present in droves including fashion, perfume and electronics brands. Apple deserves a place among those brands for sure, and I see the brand just growing in importance in coming years. Recently they announced the iPad, and I suspect it will also creep into pop culture, including advertising, in much the same way that other Apple products have.

I am hooked because of Shufflegazine

I got my very first copy of Shufflegazine a long time ago in iStyle DFC, and since then I got hooked on it and Mac products. It is because of your magazine, that encouraged me to buy my first MacBook (white), and my first iPod touch. It was because of your friendly information that helped me switch from PC to Mac. I used your reviews as my guide when i purchased my aluminum MacBook the moment it arrived in UAE, and more recently my iPhone 3GS. December 2009, I made a New Year’s Resolution, and that was “not to miss a copy of Shufflegazine” and that’s the time I made my subscription. And for the past two months, it lessen my worries in life. I received my magazine on time and still enjoy the same satisfaction that made me hooked as a reader. Thank you for the data and information that your magazine is providing us. I’ve been a Mac user for three years now and still I’m learning a lot from Shufflegazine. It’s really worth the investment. Q: Kindly, if you can, help me with the Arabic support in my MacBook Pro computer. I can write only in the TextEdit program or NeoOffice, but with iWork or Word programs I can't, and even Illustrator doesn't work. Is there no other program or setting maybe I could change to let it work? I can't design anything with Arabic and it's irritating. So please, what is the solution?A: This is a very common question and you should check out some of the existing threads on this at www.emiratesmac.com, but let's take it in steps. For full Arabic support in Adobe's application look at the ME versions offered by WinSoft (winsoft.com). There is some Arabic support in the regular CS4 apps, for example, but you'll find much more functionality in what's offered by WinSoft. For Office it's simple, there's no Arabic support. You don't mention what Mac OS X version you use, but if you use anything pre 10.6 Snow Leopard you want to remove some fonts that Office installed. (For info see: shuffle.to/arabicofficefonts). For word processing NeoOffice works, as you've discovered, and you may want to look at Mellel (www.redlers.com) or Nisus (www.nisus.com) as well.

Q: What is the best voice recorder app for the iPhone, that gives the highest quality audio and other added features?A: I've been using FiRe quite a bit, and it's the best recording app that I've come across for iPhone and iPod touch. It's not a voice recording app, as such, but a general-purpose audio recorder. To me it's mainly a backup to my M-Audio Microtrack II recorder, and it does a good job of getting me recordings of interviews, presentations and more that I can listen through for when I write articles. FiRe records in CD quality, and one great thing about it is you see the sound wave as it records, so you can make an instant judgment of whether the input level is appropriate. Another great feature is that you can tap on the sound wave as it scrolls by and FiRe adds a sort of bookmark, so you can later easily go back to a particular point in the recording. I should add that the recording quality of the iPhone's built-in microphone is very limited, no matter what software you use. To really step up in quality, get something like Blue Microphone's Mikey. (www.bluemic.com/mikey) We reviewed the first generation Mikey in our September, 2009 issue and they've just released the Mikey 2.0, which we look forward to trying soon.

Q: I'm studying business at college, but I want to start getting into web design and perhaps do it as a side business or even full time one day. So far I've read some about HTML and CSS, and it's exciting, but what software would you recommend for me, as I want to be a serious web developer?A: It's not an easy question to answer as there is so much to chose from. Adobe's DreamWeaver is of course one option. It's very extensive and can help you build almost anything for the web as it's full of wizards and other functionality. However, my recommendation for you, if you want to really be serious about web design and development, is to dig into the code itself and write, at least some of it, yourself. For that you can use almost any text editor. TextMate is a good choice (macromates.com) as is BBEdit (www.barebones.com/products/bbedit). If you want something more specific for web development, look at Coda (www.panic.com/coda) or Espresso (macrabbit.com/espresso). Personally I've not used Espresso much, but I do most my web coding in Coda. You have it all in one app: FTP, SSH, CSS editing and text editor. If CSS is something you really want to dig in to, check out Espresso's sister-app CSSEdit (macrabbit.com/cssedit), it will really help you explore the amazing power of CSS. يدعم اللغة العربية. هل هناك أي برنامج آخر، أو ربما طريقة لتغيير اإلعدادات؟ إن

عدم قدرتي على التصميم باللغة العربية أمر مزعج جدا بالنسبة لي. ما هو الحل؟

بالحكم سريعا على مستوى التسجيل. أيضا، يمكن النقر على الموجة الصوتية وهي تسجل

الصوت، إلضافة ما يشابه العالمة الداللية، لتساعد المستخدم على العودة إلى تلك

Think again. It was quite easy to select a graphics card a few years back if you wanted to play the latest games on your PC- you would simply go out and buy the most expensive one on the market. However, that is not the case today and there is a very good reason for that.

It started when standard monitor sizes were 15-inch and screen resolutions were 1024x768. Every six months to a year, the screen size and resolutions kept getting higher and the gaming enthusiast kept getting lured. In order to play a game at a higher resolution, a graphics card needed to pump out more pixels and thus, every time the monitors were upgraded, it gave the graphics card manufacturers a reason to make more money by releasing a new graphics card that would allow you to play at higher resolutions.

However, it seems that things have slowed down considerably once we hit the 1920x1200 resolution about two years back. There are a couple of reasons why that happened. First, you might be aware, 1920 pixels is the width of a Full-HD 1080p display, and maybe that is a standard that industry wants to stick to. Or, considering that most monitors capable of that resolution are between 22 to 27 inches, it became clear that a monitor with a bigger size would either not fit your work desk or would be too big to sit so close to. Believe me, I use a 30-inch monitor at times and I have to move my entire head and not just my eyes to go from one side of the screen to the other.

So now that we have a standard resolution for the past few years, suddenly it seems that a decent high-end, but not a super duper high-end graphics card, can manage to pump out enough pixels at a decent frame rates with all the bells and whistles such as AA and AF enabled.

The price/performance ratio has become a lot more important now, especially since the console prices have come down. Think about it: would you rather spend AED 2,500 on just a single component for your PC, or a PS3 that is a complete system that will also allow you to play games at the same resolution along with watching BluRay movies on your big screen TV.

So what should you pay for a graphics card? In my opinion, AED 800 should be about what you should need to spend, and believe it or not, you have a decent selection in that price range. Graphics cards

based on the NVIDIA GTX260 or GTX275 GPU could be bought for that and they will play almost all of the new games at good enough frame rates. If you are an ATI fan, then you have the 4870 card which also works as well if not better than the GTX 260. Both these cards allow you to play most of the new games at 1920x1200 resolution with 4x AA (Anti-Aliasing) at 60FPS (frames per second) which translates into a very smooth gaming experience.

The few games that are more demanding and resource hungry should work with these graphics cards at 30+ FPS, which is the basic requirement for a true gamer. Plus you always have the option of disabling a few video settings to get a better frame rates; I’ve seens guys playing Counter Strike in an almost wire-frame model, just so they dont suffer from any lag or stuttering.

Of course, there will always be a “Crysis” kind of game released every so often that will be totally unplayable on anything other than the extreme higher end hardware at the time of its release, but wouldn’t you rather spend AED 2,000 on getting a PS3 and a game such as MAG or Uncharted 2 for it? I know I would.

I’ve been using my Nike+ shoes with my iPhone for a few months now. Although my early morning walks took a rest for a while when going to Sweden and to CES in Las Vegas, I’ve been trying to make them as regular as possible. The LunarGlide+ shoes, kindly provided by Sun and Sand Sports, have been great for the morning walks as well as walking around the exhibition halls in Las Vegas. I tried using the iPhone to track how far I walked at CES, but then I forgot to turn it on and missed out on almost an entire day, so I gave up on that quest. It certainly helps with my morning walks, however, to see how far I’ve gone and to keep track of my progress, or lack thereof. Although Nike’s web site for the plus system is a bit of a mess and could use less Flash, it does work, so I guess that’s good. Although I’ve not exercised as much as I should have throughout my life, I’ve gone through my fair share of shoes and the LunarGlide+ are the best ones I’ve had yet. They especially feel very stable laterally (side to side) and I have a sense that they’ll keep my feet and ankles safe. One problem has been finding music that is in the right rhythm for my steps, but one by one I’ve found songs in my collection that fit in beats per minute. Now I’m up to around 10 songs and I keep adding. I’d recommend Nike+ shoes for anyone who wants to exercise regularly whether it’s walking or running, or a combination. Add a compatible iPod or iPhone and you’re all set.

لم أكن يوما شخصا مدمنا على التمارين، لكني استهلكت العديد من األحذية، وأعتقد أن حذاء »لونار غاليد« هو أفضلها حتى اآلن. يعطي هذا الحذاء ثباتا جانبيا ممتازا، وأشعر معه بأن كاحلي وقدمي هما في أمان

تام.

مشكلتي مع هذا النظام، هو صعوبة إيجاد موسيقى تناسب إيقاع خطواتي، ولكن مع بعض الجهد بدأت أجد أغنية مناسبة تتوافق مع معدل خطواتي في الدقيقة، ثم غيرها وغيرها. أمتلك اآلن حوالي 10

أغاني في مجموعتي المخصصة لتماريني الصباحية مع »نايكي +«.

باختصار، نظام رائع لكل من يرغب بممارسة الركض أو المشي أو كليهما، ويتوافق مع أجهزة »آي بود« و»آي فون«.

It’s probably safe to assume that Nokia is going to be successful with their Comes With Music program, under which a customer who buys a Nokia X6 gets unlimited access for 12 months to the around four million songs Nokia has to offer. After that time runs out they can either purchase another compatible Nokia phone and keep getting more music, or Nokia has said that any music the customer downloads are theirs to keep forever. I would say that Nokia’s announcement represents a great option for consumers, and a kick in the behind for Apple who now must be looking with increased interest on the Middle East. Already on the night of the announcement in Beirut, I said that I’d probably buy the Nokia X6 just to get the unlimited music and not even bother putting a SIM card in it to use it as a phone. Now, I don’t know if that’ll happen yet, but I do think Nokia has something

interesting on their hands here, that may change a lot of how things work today. If I could get access to as many songs as I would like and download them at my leisure I guess I would listen to a lot more music. Apple’s iTunes on my Mac forms a great partnership with my iPhone and iPod, but I obviously have to pay for the music. And since there’s no music in what’s on offer in the UAE iTunes store, it means that many customers are shut out of getting music legally through iTunes in the Middle East. Perhaps the question now is whether Apple can actually be successful with a full iTunes store in the Middle East, when and if they bring it here. Nokia may say they’re the biggest seller of music players in the world and they may have a great idea in Comes With Music, but let’s not for a second think that we can count Apple out yet. Underestimate Cupertino at your peril, Nokia.

The cheating fanboy

I've been thinking. The iPhone is truly a piece of work. It's build quality is second to none. The operating system is so simple that almost anyone can get accustomed to it in a matter of days. It's THE phone to beat and until the Nexus One came along, everything else just paled in comparison, where smartphones are concerned. Also, until the Nexus One came along, Android wasn't really a threat, and neither was Symbian, Windows Mobile, or Maemo. But when Google had HTC stick a serious engine under the hood of what was previously a great handling car with a weedy engine- I have a friend with a Mazda Miata who'd be able to identify with this analogy- the Nexus One became a serious contender, a threat to the outright dominance of the iPhone. A 1GHz Snapdragon processor under the hood, a couple of tweaks, and Google closed the gap between the leading Android phone and the status quo, the iPhone. Not completely, but enough to rattle Steve's cage, especially when recent analyst reports showed that sales and usage of devices running the Android operating system have doubled in the last quarter, and are now steadily gaining market share. Compared to the past, where iPhone updates were few and oh-so-infrequent, and Mr Jobs wouldn't even bother commenting on Android's growth in the market, the tune seems to be changing. In the recent- and now infamous- Apple Town Hall meeting, Jobs made the following declarations about the iPhone: Apple will deliver aggressive updates to iPhone

that Android/Google won't be able to keep up with; iPad is up there with the iPhone and Mac as the most important products Jobs has been a part of; Regarding the Lala acquisition, Apple was interested in bringing those people into the iTunes team; and the next iPhone coming is an A+ update. What that tells us is that Apple is now reacting to the onslaught of Android devices that can only get more aggressive in the coming months. This also means an overall better user experience from quick bug fixes and feature introductions. And for Apple to take Google seriously enough to call Google's "Do No Evil" mantra "a load of crap", directly criticize Google's shift from search services to selling- really more marketing than selling- phones, and the rumour that Apple will reduce its involvement with Google where search services and map content is concerned, all clearly indicate that whatever Google is doing, it's doing it right, and Apple cannot rest on its laurels. While Google's at it, Symbian's gone open-source, Maemo is making a resurgence in the nerd market, as is Windows Mobile. (Or I should say "Windows Phone".) Apple is feeling the heat, and they are doing something about it. We are better off for it, thanks to Google's Android blitzkrieg. All that said though, I think it'll be years before Android beats the iPhone, so don't sell your iPhone just about yet, but stay tuned because a lot of exciting things are happening.

After my interview with a Monster representative at CES recently, I was given a box with Monster’s Turbine Pro Gold Edition earphones. I guess I call them earphones, but Monster goes with the term “in-ear speakers.”

When I first used them they kept sliding out of my years and I was thinking that the review would not be very positive. However, I changed the soft tip, the bud, to a more cone-shaped one and now the buds slide into my ears easier and stay put.

The Turbine Pro Gold earphones are built like tanks with an all metal construction. I think you could drive a car over them without hurting them at all. The turbine-like and shiny gold design make these earphones really stand out.

In terms of sound these earphones are amazing. They seem to bring out more detail, more bass and more treble than any others I’ve tried. I’m probably revealing my age here, but listening to Morten Harket’s falsetto in “Take on me” revealed some nuances I’ve not experienced before when using these earphones.

Really, the only significant downside I see is the price. But if you can stomach the price, these earphones will give you just about the best sound you’ve ever experienced provided the source of the audio is high-enough quality. As it is, I can’t see any other option than to give these earphones top marks.

هذه السماعات لها بنية الدبابات، بجسم معدني بالكامل، يبدو وكأنه قادر على تحمل

وزن سيارة عليه دون أن ينكسر. إن شكلها الفريد الذي يشبه المحرك ولونها الذهبي،

يميزها عن غيرها.

من ناحية الصوت، لم أجد مثيال ألداء هذه السماعات، فهي قادرة على إظهار تفاصيل

دقيقة، بطبقات أوضح وإيقاع ترددي قوي، لتتفوق على أي سماعات أخرى جربتها من

قبل. لقد اكتشفت تنوعا لم أسمعه من قبل في صوت موتين هاركيت عالي الطبقة في

أغنيته »تيك أون مي«.

باختصار، سماعات رائعة األداء، بصوت عالي الجودة، تتفوق به على معظم السماعات

األخرى، وإن كانت باهظة الثمن.

The M-Audio MicroTrack II is a mobile digital audio recorder that is capable of capturing CD-quality audio and saving it onto a Compact Flash card. The stereo files are stored as either WAV (non-compressed) or MP3 (compressed) in quality up to 320kbps, 24-bit and 96kHz. Audio can be input through a 1/8-inch port or two 1/4-inch ports. There is an included T-shaped stereo mic that plugs in to the 1/8-inch jack. It is very good, but picks up every little sound, which makes it less useful for interviews, for example. With the two 1/4-inch jacks you can record two separate sounds or voices onto the left and right track of the stereo file, thereby giving you more flexibility in editing later. You can control the gain (volume) on each channel individually or combined during recording, which is great, so you can achieve better overall balance in the recording. One thing that annoys me is that the MicroTrack doesn't automatically sense what mics are plugged in, so if you change mics you have to manually switch input in the menus on the screen; Once your audio is recorded to the CF card, you can either take the card out and put it in a card reader in your Mac or connect the MicroTrack to the Mac using a USB cable. In summary, the MicroTrack is a device with a narrow target audience. It's certainly not for everyone, and for many who need to record it's overkill. But for those who want the best possible audio quality in a small, portable device, it's a great choice.

The P-Flip is a small, but rather ingenious piece of gear, that you may want to consider adding to your collection. It gives you the functionality of a simple dock as well as an extended battery in one small package. Basically you slide in the iPhone to to the dock connector on one side and on the other side is the small battery with charge indicator, and USB port. In terms of how much power it has, on an iPhone 3GS that had just shut down because it had no juice left, it brought the iPhone’s battery meter up to full in just under two hours. After that it seemed to give another 10% or thereabouts to the iPhone charge. Comparing it to the Case Mate Fuel that I usually get two full charges with, it’s a bit disappointing. Nonetheless, I can’t see any other way but than to give the P-Flip top marks. You get two items in one, a dock and a battery, at a price that you would pay for either one on their own. If you want something very small that combines the two, which is great for traveling for example, then the P-Flip should definitely be on your list of possibles.

These are two 500GB notebook-size external hard drives. LaCie used famous designer Philippe Starck for this hard drive, and it’s undeniably stylish. A thick sheet of aluminum- 2mm according to LaCie, but it seems much thicker- wraps around the drive, with a very rugged surface. LaCie claims this thick piece of metal will both protect the drive from physical harm as well as dissipate heat. The G-Drive mini is also covered in aluminum but the design is very different, and although not as striking as Starck’s design, it’s more practical, I think. G-Technology put a heat sink on the underside of the drive so that when put on a flat surface there’s plenty of room underneath the drive for air to circulate. It’s perhaps not as stylish as the LaCie drive, but it’s no ugly duckling either. In fact, they’ve mimicked Apple’s design concept pretty well, and the G-Drive mini will look great right next to a Mac

Do you know how fun it is to run ethernet cables around your home to create a network? Usually it isn’t at all. Wireless can alleviate this difficulty for most purposes, but often factors such as walls, appliances and radio interference can severely affect speed and reliability. The Belkin Gigabit Powerline Adapters can offer another solution that can be very worthwhile alternative, providing ample speed with easy installation.The Starter Kit comes with two adapters that are plugged into two separate electrical outlets in your home to provide a bridge for networking over the electrical wires. The adaptors can deliver “up to” 1000Mbps of bandwidth, plenty for streaming media from one device to another, making it pretty useful for iTunes and other media sharing over a local network. Individual result will vary greatly of course; using the electric outlets in my apartment I was only able to get bandwidth of “under 200 Mbps”, as indicated by the light on the devices. This was still more than enough bandwidth to easily transfer very large files from one machine to another in just a few minutes though, so even in under less than optimal conditions performance can be very good.One might worry about the security of running a network over electric wiring, especially if in a shared housing situation like an apartment, but the Belkin Gigabit Powerline adaptors have built-in encryption, preventing others from tapping into the network even with like devices. And new encryption keys can be created with a touch of a button on each of the units, making security easy. This Canon printer is a big and heavy multifunction machine that can scan, print in black and white, and fax. Setting it up is easy and with drivers for Windows as well as Mac OS X it should fit right in, in most settings. When powered-down in sleep mode it took the printer 45 seconds to warm up and start printing. Once going it produced a 68 page full-color PDF (printed in black and white) in 6 min 20 sec, which equates to about 10 pages per minute. Making a copy of the same 68 pages took only 2 min 24 seconds. Scanning an A4 page the printer managed in 24 seconds. Printer output is, as can be expected, very good, especially with black text that appears very crisp and clear. Since it’s only black and white, anything in color will be rendered into what the printer thinks is an equivalent tone of gray, something that doesn’t always turn out so great, but we can’t really fault the printer for that. All in all this is a big printer that produces high-quality black and white prints. That it can also scan and fax is very nice addition, and it would be eminently suited for a small office or a small workgroup in a larger organization.

Speck makes some really cool products for Macs, iPhone, iPod and other things as well. The Pixelskin for iPhone has been around for quite a while, but it’s been updated for new iPhone models. It’s made out of fairly soft material, but the thickness and the special design with square blocks that cover the entire top, sides and back of the iPhone all offer good protection from bumps and drops. As with so many iPhone cases it offers no protection for the screen however and Speck does not include any screen protector either. You will find holes for the mute switch, camera lens, bottom dock, speaker and mic, as well as the headphone jack. In conclusion I think the Pixelskin stands out well in the crowded market for iPhone cases. It’s not outstanding, but if you like this sort of case you should consider it.

With the a550, Sony is getting into a very tough segment of the DSRL market. Priced at AED 3,599 with a 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 kit lens it’s taking on Nikon D500 and Canon 500D, two very good cameras. Looking at the main specifications the a550 has 14.2 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, a 3 inch LCD display, takes SD card and MemoryStick, in-camera image stabilization, ISO range from 200 to 12,800 and it can shoot up to 5 fps (7 with reduced autofocus ability).

When it really counts, in shooting functionailty and photo quality, the a550 delivers. Even in tricky sitautions it seems to calculate exposures correctly, and autofocus is typically quick and finds the right focus plane. If you’re looking for a DSLR that you will shoot mostly in automatic mode, the a550 is a good choice.

Personally, my main issue with this camera, as with the a200 and a300 series from Sony, is the build quality. It’s not that it’s necessarily that bad, it’s that it feels like it’s that bad. Many customers who consider this camera will probably not even notice, but for more experienced photographers the a550 just feels very plastic. That keeps the weight down and of course also the price, so perhaps we shouldn’t be too tough on Sony for that. The same feeling of plastic is completely carried through to the 18-55mm kit lens.

Sony has not put a small display on the top right of the camera, next to the shutter release button, where I’m so used to it being from my Nikon D90. Perhaps it’s just that: I’m so used to it being there that it makes me miss it. Perhaps this is something I would get used to if I used the

a550 for a longer period of time. For new or casual photographers this will more than likely not even be an issue.

What’s most puzzling about the a550, especially considering it has a great LCD display and Live View mode, is the omission of video recording. Yes, the a550 cannot record video. All the other gizmos you’ve come to expect of current DSLRs and then some are there, like face detection, plenty of scene modes, image stabilization, sensor cleaning, etc. One thing that Sony added that can help save a good shot in certain situations is automatic HDR shooting. With the High Dynamic Range function, the camera takes two shots at different exposure settings and combines them into one shot to therefore capture more of the highlights and shadows than one single exposure could. Given that advanced functionality, it’s even more confusing that they didn’t put in video.

This camera is clearly for those who want the better photo quality offered by a DSLR, and the flexibility of being able to swap lenses, but also the fully-automatic shooting modes offered. If you’re even once in a while shooting manually, fully or partially, this is not really a good choice for you. And the lack of video recording is strange and will be a deal-breaker for some potential buyers.

Game developer 2k Marin has been in the unenviable position of being tasked with creating Bioshock 2, a sequel to a game that’s considered by most gamers as nothing short of legendary.

So, how does one create a worthy sequel to a brilliant original such as Bioshock? Well, one way is to come up with a game that’s technically superior than the original. Considering that consoles have not taken a generation leap since the original game, and the original looked so great to start with, that’s hard. The other option is to take a really good game, an interesting plot, top notch gameplay and develop it further, expanding on everything that’s good about the original, and that’s what 2K Marin have done.

Bioshock 2 is set about 10 years after the events of the original took place. The underwater city of Rapture, created by Ayn Rand-inspired business magnate Andrew Ryan has been taken over by a female antagonist named Dr Sofia Lamb. Instead of playing Jack Ryan, you now play a Big Daddy, one of the most memorable foes from the original game. Big

Daddies are known for protecting Little Sisters, who in turn gather ADAM, which is the magical substance that helps you grow

and develop new powers. The storyline is as rich as ever and

incredibly indulging.

Playing the game for first level or two, you may

be tempted to dismiss it as being just the same as the original.

However, once you’re past the initial levels, you’ll notice all the upgrades added in Bioshock 2. For instance, you can now use a plasmid and a weapon at the same time. Plasmids give you special powers such as the ability to incinerate people with

your fingers or throw electric bolts from your hands. You can upgrade your plasmids to level two, which increases their effect.

While the gameplay is an improvement, the real winner for Bioshock 2 is the relationship between the Big Daddy and his Little Sister. You’ll be tasked to care for the Little Sister and save her from all the zombie-like splicers that are bent on killing her, as she harvests ADAM from a corpse. Once you have secured the little sister from the splicers, you must decide if you want to save her or harvest her for even more ADAMs. Your relationship with the Little Sisters will play an important part in the game.

It’s hard to find much fault in BioShock 2, other than the fact that it’s too much like the original. Rapture feels the same it did in the original, and hence the excitement of discovering a whole new retro underwater world is gone. The enemies can get a tad bit repetitive as well. Thankfully, the storyline is so engaging, you’re bound to forgive the repetitiveness.

Overall, BioShock 2 is a much more involving experience than its predecessor. The world of Rapture is as scenic as ever and playing Big Daddy is a memorable experience. Hollywood please take note – this is how good sequels are made.

Being a passionate gamer, I hardly ever play a game twice. But I played Mass Effect 2 twice on the Xbox 360 and once again on the PC. In fact, it’s the only game I have played more than once back to back. It’s the masterful story telling, the deep characters, the dynamic combat, and the epic presentation that pulled me in repeatedly.

Regardless of how you start, the basic plot remains: Human colonies across the galaxy are disappearing. Shepard is revived, after a disastrous attack on the Normandy, by a controversial pro-human organization called the Cerberus. Under the watchful eye of the sinister Illusive Man, he’s pawned into investigating the forces behind the mystery. As Shepard you must now find and recruit the best across

the galaxy and convince them to fight with you on a mission that is immediately termed as suicidal.

It wouldn’t be wrong to say that the myriad of characters is what adds depth to the story, which otherwise, isn’t really remarkable. Your squad will be made up of scientists, soldiers, rebels and even criminals. Each one is as complex as the others, with their own backgrounds. It is they and their stories that drive the plot, each compelling with their own arcs, their own challenges and their own way of dealing with them.

BioWare has done wonders with the Unreal Engine 3 and it is apparent. Mass Effect 2 looks significantly more gorgeous than the first did with diverse range of effects and environments combining to create

a deeply immersive and believable world. On the technical side of things, we encountered no frame rate drops, which goes a long way in keeping the combat dynamic and spectacular. There have been complaints about disc lockups and unpolished environment interactions, but I didn’t encounter any of that. The score and voice acting is of BioWare standards, i.e. nothing short of fantastic.

In brief, Mass Effect 2 is individually brilliant in every aspect: the combat, the writing, voice acting, visuals, score and direction comes together to create an unmatchable experience.

Lenovo calls the X100e a “professional-grade entry ultraportable”. It sits between netbooks and notebooks, and at AED 1,959 it could have been a great buy if it wasn’t for poor battery life and performance.

But let’s start out with the good. The X100e is a very stylish computer, especially the red model, and it’s also light and slim. In fact, it’s small and light enough to slide into almost any briefcase, or even a lady’s pocket book without being noticed too much. In spite of this, the screen (11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels) is bright and crisp and the keyboard is better than on any other computer of this size that I’ve tried. The AMD Athlon Neo NV40 processor running at 1.6GHz keeps Windows 7 running at a very comfortable speed, presumably helped by the 4GB of RAM. Applications, including Microsoft Office, perform quickly and without significant wait. There’s plenty of storage space on the 320GB hard drive, and you can always expand that with three USB ports and a media card reader.

Now to the not so good aspects of the X100e. The main issue is poor battery life. According to Lenovo, you can get a three cell battery rated at 2.2 hours or a six cell battery rated at 5.1 hours. We tested the model with the six cell battery and never saw anything close to 5.1 hours even with the most battery-saving mode enabled. In practice we got just over three hours of use on battery-saving mode and almost an hour less on full settings. That may not be much of an issue, but on power-saving mode the X100e becomes like a snail stuck in mud, meaning painfully slow. Just waking it up from sleep strains your patience, and doing almost anything in that mode requires a significant wait.

In terms of price, the X100e hits higher-end netbooks, and it’s not that much bigger in size than computers in that segment. The battery life doesn’t stand a chance compared to most netbooks however, and to get more battery life you have to strangle the performance leaving the computer

almost unusable. If you can accept about two to two and a half hours of use running on battery, this will be one fast and great looking portable computer. It combines some of the best aspects of netbooks as well as notebooks, but also introduces some issues of its own.

وأداؤها الضعيف.

Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) games may not be a new concept, but ever since the success of Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, there has been a boom in the number of companies creating video games to cater to the needs of MMO enthusiasts. It’s easy to see why: Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, based on the Warcraft RTS series, took the world by storm. Not only was the game completely online, but charged subscribers a monthly fee to play. The game has a record 11.5 million subscribers, and in 2008 Blizzard announced over $5bn in revenue. To date, World of Warcraft along with its expansion packs control over 60% of the MMO market.

The MMO phenomenon has made a massive impact in the US, Europe and many Asian countries, and with good reason. Many gaming critics believe that MMO games are the future of PC gaming as they effectively curb piracy. While World of Warcraft uses a monthly subscription fee revenue model, practically every other MMO game uses an in-game purchase model to earn revenue. It’s a smart way of making money; if you have 10 million users and only 10% spend one dollar, you’re still making a million dollars. Plus the in-game purchase micro transaction model also means that players don’t have to pay to play if they don’t want to. “It gives players a chance to experience the game without any cost and hence it’s more appealing to them,” says Taj Deluria, Senior Operations Manager at Tahadi, an online gaming company founded by former Maktoob CEO, Samih Toukan.

Fadi Mujahid from Game Power 7 agrees, and they use a similar revenue model for their MMOPRG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) Arabic Rappelz. Game Power 7 is one of the first companies in the region to localize a game for the Arab audience. Realizing the potential of the MMO market and with the Jabbar Internet Group to back them up, Tahadi have joined the race. Joining them this month will be UAE telecom du, and with a number of other companies expected to join the MMO race, it looks like 2010 is clearly the year for an online gaming boom in the Middle East. Here are some of the top contenders for the MMO crown at the moment.

As the first sporting MMO game, they set themselves apart in a primarily RPG-dominated space. du’s localization efforts include adding popular Middle East-based landmarks to the game including the Burj Al Arab from Dubai and the Sphinx from Egypt. Parts of the game also have a very traditional Arabic souq feel to it. Players can compete with each other in sports such as tennis, football, basketball and skiing. The game also has a prominent social element to the game allowing players to interact with each other.

The game’s best suited for younger, more casual gamers who like fact paced action. It looks like they’ll have some amount of competition from du’s version of Exalight. Touch is everywhere these days. From smart phones to tablets and more, we increasingly control them just by touching the screen on the device. There are two main technologies for touchscreens: resistive and capacitive. We thought we’d try to sort this out and talk about the characteristics of the two.

ResistiveThis is the most common technology for touchscreens so far. Basically, a resistive screen requires physical pressure to register an action. It has layers of a kind of film and measures the change in resistance between the layers that happens when something pressures the layers together. This means that almost anything can be used to push the layers together, like a stylus, a finger, a nail etc. Although many resistive screens have less visibility outdoors in sunlight than capacitive ones, they are in many ways more useful. This is because you can use them with almost anything and they operate in a wide range of climates in terms of temperature, humidity etc. They are also more accurate than capacitive screens, often down to individual pixels, especially when used with something like a stylus. Finally, they are typically cheaper to make than capacitive screens. Recent developments in resistive screen technology means that in some ways it’s catching up. Nokia’s N900, for example, has a very sensitive resistive screen that is closing in on what the capacitive ones offer.

CapacitiveAlthough iPhone wasn’t the first device using a capacitive screen, Apple’s smartphone certainly showed off what using this technology can mean for a device. Instead of registering pressure between layers of some material, like a resistive screen, a capacitive one measures the change in electrical current that occurs when certain objects touch the screen. This only works with particular items, like your finger, and not with a stylus or a nail. That’s both the capacitive screen’s strength and weakness. You can with a light swipe go between photos on your iPhone, but you can’t use it with a stylus or tap it with something else. Also on the downside is that it’s not as exact as a resistive screen as it registers a touch over a larger area. It can not pinpoint a touch on a single pixel, for example. Capacitive screens are also capable of supporting multi-touch, like the “pinch” movement that you can do on an iPhone to zoom in. However, recent developments show promise for multi-touch with resistive screens soon.

Apple’s iPod has become an icon of gadgets and consumer electronics since it was first launched on October 23, 2001. Now in it’s fifth generation, the iPod classic is basically the same form factor and design as the first one. The first iPod only had 5GB of storage space and connected with FireWire 400 cable, common in those days on all Macs. And would you believe that it was Mac-only for some time until iTunes came out for Windows in 2003? That first model also had a physical click-wheel that actually rotated and the four main buttons, including play and pause, were placed on a circle around the click-wheel. Did you know that iTunes really started its life as an application called SoundJam developed by Casady & Greene? SoundJam ran on Mac OS 9, and it wasn’t until version 2.0, as iTunes, it became available for Mac OS X. Mac miniThe introductory desktop Mac model, petite as it is, still packs quite a punch. It comes with a Core 2 Duo processor of up to 2.66GHz, which is plenty for most of what you’d want to do. And with up to 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive, and SuperDrive as standard, the mini is well prepared for many tasks. It’s limitation lies in that it’s hard to upgrade. Your only option is pretty much to connect things externally via USB or FireWire. There’s even a Mac mini especially meant to be used as a server. Google Chrome is one of the latest web browsers to enter the already pretty crowded browser market. It offers some new and exciting functionalities and characteristics and it’s become my browser of choise in a fairly short period of time. You can download it for free for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows from www.google.com/chrome.

Extensions

Much like Firefox, Google Chrome supports extensions or add-ons. Basically these are small programs that add functionality to the browser or extend functionality that is already there. There are so many extensions it’s hard to pick out just a few but one that I rely on a lot in the Xmarks extension with which I can synchronize bookmarks between browsers and computers.

How to download

In Google Chrome on Mac go to the “Window” menu and click on “Extensions”. In Linux and Windows, click on the wrench icon and then “Exetensions.” Chrome will likely tell you there are no extensions installed. Then you can click “Browse extensions”. If you already have some extensions installed, click “Get more extensions.” From the extensions home page (chrome.google.com/extensions) you can browse or search for extensions. Once you’ve clicked on one to look at its individual screen you click on “Install.” You will be asked for a confirmation and if you click “Yes” the extension will be downloaded and installed.

في »غوغل كروم« على حاسب »ماك«، اذهب إلى قائمة»ويندوز Windows«، وانقر على أيقونة مفتاح الربط، ثم على »إضافات

Extensions«. سيقوم »كروم« عندها بإخبارك بأنه ال توجد أي إضافات.

عندها يمكنك النقر على »تصفح اإلضافات Browse extensions«، أو على »احصل على المزيد من اإلضافات Get more extensions« في حالة وجود

بعض اإلضافات التي تم تنصيبها سابقا. من صفحة اإلضافات الرئيسية )chrome.google.com/extensions(، يمكنك تصفح ما هو موجود، أو

Audacity is an open source audio editing application that is surprisingly capable, well in line with commercial offerings. You can download it for free from audacity.sourceforge.net. Although we for this tutorial used the version of Audacity for Mac OS X, the application is also available for Windows and Linux and everything we show you here apply equally to all versions. We use Audacity to record and edit our Shufflegazine Tech Chat podcast (shuffle.to/techchat) and we’ve found it a very mature, stable and capable application.

PreferencesBy selecting “Preferences” in the “Audacity” menu (“Edit” menu in Windows) you get access to a wide range of settings for the application. For example, you can select from where the program should record and to where it should play the audio back. Under “Library” you find settings for MP3 export. You have to download and install the free LAME MP3 encoder from lame.buanzo.com.ar before you can export MP3 files from Audacity.

RecordTo start recording a new session, with a document window open, just click on the record button (red circle). Audacity will start recording the sound with the settings you’ve specified according to the preferences (see above). When you want to stop recording, click the stop button (yellow square).

AmplifyYou may need to make a section of your recording a bit more or less loud. First select the part of the sound you want to amplify, then select “Effect” > “Amplify”. By specifying a positive value you make the sound louder and by specifying a negative valye you make the sound less loud. Be aware that as you increase the volume artificially this way the sound is going to lose some quality and if you crank it up too much it’s going to seem increasingly horrible.

Quick editWhat I typically do for the Tech Chat podcast is listen through the recording and edit out parts that are not needed, some «uhm» and «aah» and sounds like that. It’s basically with the intent to make the recording flow a bit smoother and be more pleasant to listen to. To do that you first click and drag with the mouse over the piece of the audio that you want to cut out. If you have a recording with multiple tracks you have to make sure you select all of them otherwise the audio will not be in sync. Once you’ve made the selection just hit the delete key on your keyboard.

ExportIf you're producing audio that you mean to use in some other application you have to export it from Audacity because Audacity's own format is not very compatible with other applications. Once your editing is done, select “Export” in the “File” menu. You're then shown a dialogue where you can select what format you want to export as and options for some formats. Be aware that export can, just as applying some filters, take a long time.

Noise removalFirst you need to collect a sample of the background noise in the clip you’re working with. To do this you select a piece of the clip that has clear background noise. Try to select a piece that has as little of other sounds in it as possible to make the filter more effective. So select a piece of background noise and

then select “Effect” > “Noise Removal”. Click on “Get noise profile” and Audacity will process the sample. Go back to the menu but this time click “OK.” Audacity will apply the noise removal. Be prepared that it can take a long time in some instances.
