Dear Sir/Madam, we have pleasure to invite and welcome you to participate, to send your papers and share your experiences and

expertise in S.R.T.M. University, Nanded sponsored Two-Day International Web Conference on “The Role of Literature in the Time of

Crisis Like Coronavirus Pandemic”

About KSP Mandal: Several people with patriotic and missionary zeal felt a dire need to educate unprivileged communities of this area, and established the “Kisan Shikshan Prasarak Mandal” in 1964 with a motto- ‘Bahujan Hitay Bahujan Sukhay’ (Welfare and

Betterment of the Masses). Today the trust proudly announces to have 21 institutions that include schools and colleges located in different rural areas to meet its goals and objectives involving in the holy task of educating the masses. At the beginning, this institution

faced many moments of crises. To build and nurture an institution in such an economically, socially and educationally backward area,

without any one to patronize or help financially was not a simple task. However, our founding fathers overcame every moment of crisis with their strong will power and missionary zeal and succeed in this Herculean task. Today, the KSP Mandal, Udgir has won the

vote of repute because of its selfless activities and contribution for the cause of education.

About College: Shivaji Mahavidyalaya, started in 1968, is one of the major institutions run by Kisan Shikshan Prasarak Mandal. It is a multi-faculty, grant–in–aid institution affiliated to S.R.T.M.University, Nanded and it has been an important contributor of education

and empowerment of students in and around Udgir. The U.G.C. has accorded status of 2(f) and 12 (b) to the college. The NAAC assessed it twice and accredited it B++ and equitant grading in cycle-I as well as cycle-II. Today the college is recognized as one of

the well-known centers of higher education in this locality and university. It offers wide variety of academic programmes with a good

number of subject combination options to choose from. It has three major streams- Arts, Commerce and Science with one additional Computer based professional course stream. It also has a distance mode center of Y.C.M.O. University, Nashik. The college, with its

focus on its vision, mission and objectives, is emerging as one of the premier institutions. An efficient, well-qualified and dedicated staff along with the best administrative faculty and good infrastructure have been the strengths of the institution and this, in turn, has

contributed to a good teaching-learning environment.

Udgir. The Department is offering English as compulsory as well as optional subjects at the undergraduate level. The Department also offers Ph.D. programme. For Ph. D., the Department is affiliated with P.G. Dept & Research Center in English, Dayanand Arts College,

Latur. At present, the Department of English is the largest department of the college with largest enrolment of the students, good results and active participation of the faculty in teaching, research, publication and co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. In current

location or position they are placed, they are serving as ambassadors of goodwill, spreading the vision and mission of the esteemed

Institution.

Concept Note: The human tryst with epidemics and pandemics is as old as the mountains. Writers over centuries have frequently projected such

crises in their writings, underscoring not only its terrifying effects on globe and humanity but also the pliability of the human mind in confronting

it. Ranging from the classics to contemporary literature, reading of pandemic literature offers something in the way of an undefined comfort, and a

guide to face it. Right from Homer’s Iliad and Boccaccio’s Decameron to Stephen King’s The Stand and Ling Ma’s Severance, stories about

pandemics have depicted how human beings respond to such public health crises and offered ways to face such calamities. Giovanni Boccaccio’s

The Decameron, Albert Camus' The Plague, Richard Preston’s The Hot Zone: The Terrifying True Story of the Origins of the Ebola Virus, Randy

Shilts’ And the Band Played On: Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic, Steven Johnson’s The Ghost Map, Gina Kolata’s Flu, Sonia Shah’s The

Fever: How Malaria Has Ruled Humankind for 500,000 Years, Barbara Tuchman’s A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century,’ Elizabeth A.

Fenn’s Pox Americana: The Great Smallpox Epidemic of 1775-82,’ Stewart O'Nan’s A Prayer for the Dying can be worth to mention here. Such

books help us to define who we are as human beings as well as in enriching our lives. Such literature plays role as a ‘vaccine’ and help us how to

confront moments of crises and how to come out of it. This is all the more apparent during moments of crisis, like the current COVID-19 pandemic

and to contemplate over such vital issues is the need of the time and hence objective of this online conference.
