After Perpendicular (A.P.) : A perpendicular drawnto the waterline at the point where the aft side ofthe rudder post meets the summer load line.

Where no rudder post is tted it is taken as thecentre line of the rudder stock.

Forward Perpendicular (F.P.) : A perpendiculardrawn to the waterline at the point where theforeside of the stem meets the summer load line.

Length Between Perpendicular (L.P.P. L.B.P.) : !helength "etween the forward and the aftperpendiculars measured along the summer loadline.

    Amidships : A point midwa# "etween the

after and forward perpendiculars Length $%erall (L.$.A.) : Length of the %esseltaken o%er all e&tremities.

Base line : A hori'ontal line drawn at the topof the keel plate. All %ertical mouldeddimensions are measured relati%e to this line

oulded "eam : easured at the midshipsection is the ma&imum moulded "readth ofthe ship

oulded raft raught : !he distance fromthe "ottom of the keel to the waterline. !heload draft is the ma&imum draft to which a%essel ma# "e loaded

oulded epth : easured from the "ase lineto the heel of the upper deck "eam at theship*s side amidships.

+heer : ,ur%ature of decks in thelongitudinal direction. easured as theheight of deck at side at an# point a"o%e theheight of deck at side amidships

,am"er -ound of Beam : ,ur%ature of decks inthe trans%erse direction. easured as the heightof deck a"o%e the height of deck at side

-ise of oor eadrise : !he rise of the "ottomshell plating line a"o%e the "ase line. !his rise ismeasured at the line of moulded "eam

/alf sliding of keel : !he hori'ontal at portion of

the "ottom shell measured to port or star"oardof the ship*s longitudinal centre line. !his isuseful dimension to know when dr#0docking.

!um"le home : !he inward cur%ature of the

side shell a"o%e the summer load line. Free"oard : the %ertical distance measured

from the waterline to the top of the deckplating at the side of the deck amidships.1ormall# e&posed to weather and sea.

Flare : !he outward cur%ature of the sideshell a"o%e the waterline. 2t promotesdr#ness and is therefore associated withthe fore end of ship

!onnage measurement !his is often referred to when the

    si'e of the %essel is discussed3 and

the gross tonnage is 4uoted fromLlo#d*s register. !onnage is a measure of the enclosed

    internal %olume of the %essel3 566

cu"ic feet representing one ton 2ts normall# di%ided into categories

    as follow:0

    5. isplacement !onnage A ship*s displacement is the sum of the

ship*s actual weight (lightweight) and it*scontents (deadweight).

!he metric unit of measurement is 5tonne (7 5666 8g).

!he displacement represents the amountof water displaced "# the ship e&pressed

in tonnes. !he weight of water displaced therefore

e4uals the weight of the ship

    9. Lightweight !onnage

(lwt) !he lightweight is the weight of the ship

as "uilt (hull3 machiner#) including "oilerwater3 lu"ricating oil and the cooling

water s#stem. Lightweight like displacement is

e&pressed in units of tonnes. 2t assumes importance in a commercial

sense onl# when considering the %alueof the %essel which is to "e "roken up forscrape.

    . eadweight tonnage

(dwt) eadweight is the weight of the

cargo which a ship carries plus

weights of fuel3 stores3 water"allast3 fresh water3 crew andpassengers and "aggage.

2t is the di;erence "etween theloaded ship displacement and thelightweight.

+hip side markings Load line mark

consists of a ring 300 mm in outside diameter and

25 mm thick which is intersected by a horizontal line 450 mm in length

and 25 mm thick, the upper edge of which passes

through the centre of the ring. The centre of the

ring is placed amidships and at a distance eual tothe assigned summer freeboard measured

!ertically below the upper edge of the deck line.
