Foreword

Fijian National Standards Body develops Fijian Standard (FS) by using international best practices. The work

of preparing national standards is normally carried out through technical committees.

The procedures used to develop this document are in line with the Fijian Standard Development Procedures

(SOP).

The Department of National Trade and Measurement and Standards (DNTMS) also adhere to the WTO

principles in the Technical Barrier to Trade (TBT).

The main task of working groups is to prepare National Standards. Draft National Standards are developed

using international standards. Publication as National Standard requires approval by at least 75% of the

working group members.

The FS 13-1:2019 was prepared by technical committee FS/TC 6. The subcommittee responsible to draft

this document is FS/TC 6/SC 1, Sheet Roof and Wall Cladding

Introduction

After Tropical Cyclone Winston, the need to review standards for building and construction

materials has increased. The sheet roof and wall cladding material failed to withstand with strong

wind speed of Fiji’s cyclonic region.

As such the review of the Fijian Standard for sheet roof and wall cladding in undertaken. The

Standard covers the grade of steel to be used, coating class, and minimum specifications sheet roof

and wall cladding material that meet the minimum wind force for cyclonic conditions in Fiji which is

also linked to the substructure and fixing schedule.

This standard will assist importers/manufacturers/retailers in producing adequate building materials

and by end users wishing to specify the correct grade with base metal thickness of materials for their

specific purposes. The standard will allow quality building materials used on buildings and minimize

substandard products entering into the Fijian market.

Sheet Roof and Wall Cladding Material — Minimum Requirements

1 Scope

This standard sets out minimum technical specifications, marking and labelling requirements and product

conformity for sheet roof and wall cladding materials which are used to manufacture building materials.

It is applicable to sheet roof and wall cladding materials, which will improve the quality of building materials

and maintain the buildings.

2 Normative references

The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document.

for cyclonic regions.

3 Terms and definitions

3.2 Absolute

Completely certain without any tolerance.

3.14.4 Aluminium/zinc alloy coating

A hot-dip coating of 50% to 60% aluminium, 1% to 2% silicon, with the remainder zinc, and incorporating

less than 1% of minor additions of control elements (Type AZ).

3.14.5 Aluminium/zinc/magnesium alloy coating

A hot-dip coating of 47% to 57% aluminium, 1% to 3% magnesium, 1% to 2% silicon with the remainder

zinc, and incorporating less than 1% of minor additions of control elements (Type AM).

3.14 Coating type

The compositions of many of the metallic coatings are based around a nominal element, e.g. zinc or a nominal

combination of elements, e.g. 55% aluminium with balance zinc.

3.13 Differential Coating

A coating whereby the manufacturer has deliberatively applied a different coating mass to each side of the

steel.

3.8 Galvanised Coating

A coating obtained by dipping prepared ferrous articles into molten zinc.

3.3 Metallic Coating

A coating obtained by dipping prepared ferrous articles into molten zinc or molten aluminium/zinc

alloy.

3.5 Pre-painted

Covered in advance with special colouring matter.

3.6 Sheet Roof and Wall Cladding Material

Sheet Roof and wall cladding material is roofing or steel coils.

3.7 Steel Steel is an alloy of iron and other elements, primarily carbon, that is widely used in construction and other

applications because of its high tensile strength and low cost.

3.9 Span

The distance between the centre-lines of sheet fastenings to adjacent purlins or battens measured

normal to such centre-lines.

3.10 Supporting member

The member to which the cladding is attached, e.g. purlins, battens, girts.

3.11 Sheet

A flat rolled product of any width and thickness coated by hot-dipping and supplied in cut lengths.

3.12 Strip

A flat rolled product of any width and thickness coated by hot-dipping and supplied in coil form.

3.1 Tolerance

The amount by which the measure of a value can vary from the amount intended.

3.4 Wall Cladding

A type of decorative covering intended to make a wall look like it is made of a different sort of

material than it actually is.

3.14.1 Zinc Coating

A hot-dip coating of 99% zinc incorporating less than 1% of minor additions of control elements

(Type Z) or a coating of zinc converted to a zinc/iron alloy (Type ZF).

3.14.2 Zinc/aluminium Coating

A hot-dip coating of zinc with 3% to 15% aluminium and incorporating less than 1% of minor

additions of control element (Type ZA).

3.14.3 Zinc/aluminium/magnesium coating

A hot-dip coating of zinc with 5% to 13% aluminium, 2% to 4% magnesium and incorporating less

than 1% of minor additions of control element (Type ZM).

3.15 Steel Grade

Classify various steels by their composition and physical properties.

4 Designation of Steel Grade

4.1 General

The designation of steel grade shall include a set of characters in accordance with the following:

a) First character- the letter ‘G’ to indicate that mechanical properties have been achieved or

modified by in-line heat treatment prior to hot-dipping.

b) Second and subsequent characters-alphanumeric in accordance with Clauses 4.2 and 4.3.

4.2 For structural Grades

The second, third and fourth characters shall represent the minimum yield strength, in megapascals,

namely 250, 300, 350, 450, 500 and 550. Eg G550

4.3 For Formability grades

The second character shall consist of the number 1, 2 or 3 to indicate formability, as follows:

a) Profiling:……………………………………………………………………………1

A third character, the letter N where applicable, shall be used to indicate non-ageing. Eg G3N

5 Designation of coating class

5.1 Zinc coating class

The zinc coating class shall be designated by the prefix ‘Z’ or ‘ZF’, followed by a number representing the

minimum coating mass, in grams per square metre of sheet or strip (total both surfaces), determined by the

triple spot test. For differential coatings, the designation shall include the minimum coating mass on each

surface.

5.2 Zinc/aluminium coating class

The zinc/aluminium/magnesium class shall be designated by the prefix ‘ZA’ followed by a number

representing the minimum coating mass, in grams per square metre of sheet or strip (total both surfaces),

determined by the weight strip weight test.

5.3 Zinc/aluminium /magnesium coating class

The zinc/aluminium/magnesium alloy coating class shall be designated by the prefix ‘ZM’, followed by a

number representing the minimum coating mass in grams per square metre of sheet or strip (total both

surfaces), determined by the weight strip weight test.

5.4 Aluminium/zinc coating class

The aluminium/zinc alloy coating class shall be designated by the prefix ‘AZ’, followed by a number

representing the minimum coating mass, in grams per square metre of sheet or strip (total both surfaces),

determined by the weight strip weight test.

5.5 Aluminium/zinc/magnesium coating class

The aluminium/zinc/magnesium alloy coating class shall be designated by the prefix ‘AM’, followed by a

number representing the minimum coating mass, in grams per square metre of sheet or strip ( both surfaces),

determined by the weight strip weight test.

Examples

Z450- zinc coating with a total coating mass of 450g/m2 over both sides of the sheet, or Z120/60 (a different

coating)-a differential zinc coating with a coating mass of 120g/m2 over one side of the sheet and 60 g/m2 over

the other side of the sheet.

6 Requirements for Sheet Roof and Wall Cladding

7 Product Conformity

The wind load testing for roof cladding. The Low-high-low (LHL) test is the standardised test

method for roof cladding for the cyclonic regions of Fiji. For cyclonic wind loading, the LHL test is

about testing the cladding and its fasteners for resistance to the load cycles from the fluctuating wind

pressures generated during the passage of the cyclone. The test comprises the roof system (cladding,

fasteners and what they are fixed to). The test replicates the fluctuation pressures on the cladding

that generate large concentrated loads at the heads of the fasteners (typically screws and sometimes

nails). In order, to test roof cladding, AS4040.3-1992 is used to determine the resistance of sheet roof

and wall cladding to wind pressures for cyclonic region. The independent accredited laboratory test

report should be submitted on low-high-low test by manufacturer/importer.

8 Marking Requirements

8.1 Raw Material

Each package for delivery shall be legibly and durably marked or tagged to enable it to be identified

with this Standard. The information on the package shall also include the following:

a) The base metal thickness

b) The designation of the steel grade

c) The coating class

d) The product dimensions.

e) The manufacturer’s name or trademark.

8.2 Product

The sheet or strip shall be legibly and durably marked with the base steel thickness and the

designation of the steel base and coating, unless such markings are clearly detrimental to the end use,

in which case the package shall be so marked.

Annex A

(Informative)

A Test Methods

A.1 Determination of Coating Thickness

a) The Calculation of total coating thickness

For example if a square is coated steel (coating class designation AZ 150 of surface area 1m2, the

total coating thickness is calculated as follows:

Actual coating mass of sample = mass on surface A + mass on surface B

= 170 g/m2

Approximate total thickness of sample = nominal base metal thickness (0.48mm) plus

Coating thickness on both surfaces

(0.025 mm + 0.025mm)

= 0.48mm +0.05mm

= 0.53mm

Note: The base metal thickness is required for the calculation of structural properties and the coating

mass is required to indicate the level of corrosion resistance of the material. The total coated

thickness is required to confirm that the metal is compatible with machine clearances, and as

an approximate field measurement, to ascertain compliance with the ordered thickness. In the

case of differential coatings, the symbols A and B will have different values.

b) The Mass Per Square Meter of Steel Plus Coating

The mass per square meter of steel can be calculated using the following procedures:

a) Calculate the mass, m, of 1 square meter of uncoated steel for varying steel base thickness

from the following equation:

b) Add the appropriate coating mass (from AS 1397:2011) to the calculated mass (m) of

uncoated steel sheet.
