Col. Harlan Page PrescottCol. Harlan Page Prescott of Fox River Grove passed away last Friday morning at the age of 78 years, of heart failure. He was born at Versau (Vershire), Orange County, Vermont, July 20, 1838. His grandfather led the American army at Bunker Hill; his father was killed in the Civil War, in which he also served as colonel during the last three years. At one time he was in the iron industry in Pittsburgh and had amassed a large fortune, which was later swept away in a panic. About forty years ago he came to Chicago, being the only salesman of Jenkins Brothers of Tren-ton (maker of brass valves since 1865), New Jersey. He was buried Monday at the Algonquin Cemetery, Rev. Curtis Stephenson of Ravenswood preaching the sermon. Col. Prescott leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Bertha, and two daughters, Mrs. F. Klicka of Cary and Mrs. Robert Hastings of Chicago.

William Prescott (February 20, 1726 – October 13, 1795) was an American colonel in the Revolution-ary War who commanded the rebel forces in the Battle of Bunker Hill. Prescott is known for his order to his soldiers, “Do not fire until you see the whites of their eyes”, such that the rebel troops may shoot at the en-emy at shorter ranges, and therefore more accurately and lethally, and so conserve their limited stocks of ammunition. It is debated whether Prescott or someone earlier coined this memorable saying.
