We couldn’t be more excited to have

made it to this point.

You could say Mommy- hood has changed so many of us here

on the Spotlight Families crew in so many wonderful ways. Over nearly ten years as a Mom, I personally have most enjoyed

meeting other moms and dads along the way...many inspiring, informing and making me see a different side of parenthood I was not aware of. This inspired the vision of a wonderful company “spotlighting families”. A company in which other families could get inspired and informed.

What you will find in the pages of Spotlight Families Magazine is a collection of inspiring and informing articles written about amazing moms, dads, kids, community leaders and businesses dedicated to making our community a better place for families. Check out our first MOM feature with CBS Anchor Suzanne Boyd on page 14. Find out what Heat Announcer Eric Reid’s favorite thing to do “off the court” is on page 28. Get “inspired” by one of the most courageous local teens you’ll ever read about with Rebecca Zerbo on page 36. And we are honored to have the Boca Raton Police Department “Cop Corner” section as a regular feature.

We hope you find the magazine, website (www.SpotlightFamilies.com) and videos helpful in your family journey. We welcome you to connect with us here at Spotlight Families Magazine. We would love to hear from you whether you have a story to tell or want us to discuss. We welcome the connection and we welcome you!

Step inside the doors of Maui Spa and you’ll feel like your nestled somewhere

in the Hawaiian Islands rather than Boca Raton. The Maui Spa and Wellness Center opened its doors in January of 2007. The spa specializes in healing the body without chemicals or invasive procedures—tech-niques owner Gayle Wentworth absorbed during a decade-long stay in Hawaii. “I wanted this spa to be something special. I wanted someone to have the experience of a true Aloha Spirit in every aspect of the experience. I think we have accomplished that here at Maui.”

The Maui Spa & Wellness Center emulates the Aloha Spirit in every detail. There is a rich and charming story behind the name and the spa's founder, Gayle Wentworth. In 1987, Gayle moved to Maui to work with spiritual and holistic doctors who specialized in the art of body healing without chemicals or surgery. Gayle moved to Boca Raton (her childhood community) in 1997 to start working on opening her dream spa. She comes from a fam-ily of entrepreneurs therefore it was typical that she opened her own busi-ness. Gayle’s partner Carole was born in Bordeaux, France and went to college for accounting in Bordeaux. She moved to America in 1995. The two are parents to an adorable 2-year-old named Ka’ila.

“Ka'ila loves coming up here to play or get pampered. It’s so special to see her face light up every time she comes in here!”

Maui Spa has some of the most experi-enced technicians on staff the industry has to offer. The Spa has a variety of themed

rooms as well. A client favorite would have to be the Hana Hydrotherapy Room that gives guests the experience of relaxing in a tropical forest. And don’t forget about the men. The Spa has recently also added what they call the “fountain of youth” or a beer bath in which special ingredients are added into a copper tub. "The copper bath balances out the positive and negative ions in our own body,” said Wentworth. A truly amaz-ing experience both moms, dads and the entire family can enjoy!

COM E S TO BOCA RATON

“Boca Raton is an amazing and great fit for this spa. You have a group of people who work hard here and also want the best in

relaxation after a long day’s work. We offer so many wonderful things here for everyone

from our massages to our manicures.”

Suzanne Boyd

SPOTLIGHTFAMILIES.COM | SPRING 2015 15

Page 18: Sf mag spring 2015 final update last

Throughout the workweek, CBS 12 News Team Anchor Suzanne Boyd is up and out the door hours before many of us even hit the off button on our alarms. Each and every day local viewers

can see her smiling face between the hours of 4:30 am and 7:00 a.m. on WPEC-TV, the Palm Beach County CBS affiliate. A shift Suzanne says she’s still getting used to after all these years.

“Thank goodness for coffee right? I mean it’s actually not bad. There is no one out driving. I get a lot of thinking done on my drive in. But I would not change a thing. It truly is a great place to come in and work day in and day out.”

Boyd, 41, and a mother of two, is one of the franchise anchors on CBS 12. Over the years she’s worked a variety of shifts. “It’s just what you do in the news business.” She wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Suzanne grew up in Monticello, a tiny town in North Florida. Her father dreamed of his daughter running the family farm one day. Suzanne,

though, dreamed of running far from the small town and had bigger aspirations. She won a Watermelon Queen pageant and was a guest on a local Tallahassee morning show and the TV bug bit.

“I knew the moment I entered the television station and felt the energy on set, news was where I was meant to be. It’s exciting, it’s fast paced. It’s a long way from my small town roots. But you know my kids and I always look forward to going back to visit-ing family and the farm and the farm animals. It truly is quite op-posite from the sand and palm trees we have here, but I would not change it for the world.”Suzanne graduated with a broadcast jour-nalism degree from the University of Florida in 1995 and immediately went to work for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune’s 24-hour news channel, writing for both the newspaper and television station. She anchored there for two-and-a-half years before landing a job in South Florida. In 1998, she was first hired as the weekend reporter for CBS 12 and then

Fox 29 in West Palm Beach. She eventually went on to launch the CBS 12 I-Team and won three Associated Press awards for her reporting. She says her TV station is like family, but there is nothing like coming home to her two beautiful children, Laine (9) and Trace (5).

“There are days, I can’t wait to walk through these doors and see their faces. They are truly two of the sweetest, funniest most compassionate souls. I am so lucky to have them in my life. This is why I do what I do, so these kids can have an amazing life. That’s what being a mom is about, right. There is no more import-ant job than the job of being a mom.”

So just what does the Boyd family do for their down time?“Well, during the week, when the kids come home, it’s all about homework time, dinner time and then some play time. Have you seen our trampoline? It’s where we love to go and have some fun no matter what day it is. It makes me feel like a kid again getting on that thing. We laugh so hard sometimes jumping around. It’s our thing.”

Suzanne says if the family isn’t hanging around the back yard re-laxing or jumping around, they are out and about in the communi-ty. She says you can’t find an area quite like this anywhere else.

“I knew when I got to this area it was something special. Palm Beach is an amazing place to raise your kids. Where else can you find gorgeous parks with carousels, the ocean blocks away, and great kid hangouts along the avenue, wonderful schools, and so much more? We simply love it here.”

Salt & Pepper

Parmesan Cheese

Bread Crumbs

Olive Oil

DIRECTIONSSalt and pepper each chicken breast, then coat them in Parmesan and bread crumbs. I put a few tablespoons of olive oil in a large saute or frying pan over medium heat. Place each chicken breast in the pan and just brown it on one side then flip them over.

Cover the pan and turn the heat down to low.

Let it cook on low for 20 minutes, but it’s VERY IMPORTANT you DO NOT open the cover during that time. The juices will stay in the pan and your chicken will be so moist and yummy!

health Mom Entrepreneur

on the Rise

When it comes to knowing how to keep your face fresh and healthy, Pattie Runyon Goldenberg, an Indepen-

dent Consultant at Rodan & Fields, many local moms say, is “the” go to resource for skin products. Pattie, a mother of 3 outgoing boys was born in Frankfurt, Germany, but grew up in Roanoke, VA. Pattie has always been a huge fan of healthy skin regimen and knew the moment she learned about the business of Rodan & Fields and the product behind it, it was a match made in facial ecstasy. We sat down with this red- headed beauty to gather some of her top tips and how she manages life as a successful mom entrepreneur.

q.a.

Why Rodan + Fields? Rodan+Fields was developed by practicing dermatologists for their patients. Many concerns can be addressed without the need for stronger prescription concentrations or more involved procedures such as plastic surgery. Whether for cost, access, or personal concerns for risks associated with some procedures, R+F offers a viable alternative through clinically proven dermatologic products. I have 3 boys. I hope I’m setting a good example for them on the impor-tance of using sunscreen regularly. And I hope I can be an example of how you can build a business and reinvent yourself at any point, and to follow your dreams!

Leading problem moms complain of?The main concerns I hear from people are dullness, wrin-kles, and lack of firmness. Regular exfoliation, broad-spec-trum sunscreen, and products containing peptides and ret-inol can dramatically improve these conditions. But the key is regular use! These conditions did not develop overnight and they will not disappear overnight, nor will improve-ments continue if you stop your skincare regimen. Women in general can develop problems with their skin because we tend to put everyone else first and not taking time for our own needs. After a full day of work and family, by the time you get the kids in bed you just want to collapse, not necessarily thinking about washing your face. New moms especially can be experiencing hormonal changes, lack of sleep, and maybe finding that products that used to work are just not meeting their needs anymore.

Things we really should do on a daily basis?I highly recommend moms do regular exfoliation and use sunscreen every day! Only about 10% of how our skin ages is due to genetics. The rest is life-style factors, namely sun exposure! And without regular exfoliation, dead skin cells accumulate unevenly, clogging pores, contributing to break-outs, and preventing light reflecting, causing a dull, tired complexion.

TAKING YOUR

BACK!

BODY

Operation Fit Moms™is a nutrition and fitness program designed by nutrition consultants, fitness experts and moms. The program helps boost the metabolism, conquer those nasty post-pregnancy hormones, blast away the extra fat and provide an uninterrupted environment.

Unlike other programs, this one doesn’t force you to take weight loss pills, pre-packaged meals, shakes or shots; just good, old fashion, exercise and healthy eating, plus continuous support from a knowledge-able and caring support team. Moms looking to make the leap can participate in two ways: in person or on the web with a program called Moms On The Go. Two great ways to get into shape TODAY!

Having a baby is an amazing expe-rience. But the impact on a mom’s

body; the stretching and weight gain that goes along with pregnancy, can be disastrous. Even though a good sweat session can provide you with energy and help you feel strong, you’re probably just too exhausted to muster up the stamina to get to the gym. That’s where Operation Fit Moms™ in Boca Raton can help you take your body back!

Owner and South Florida native, Pam Waddick is an Operation Fit Moms believer, “With my daughter Mia who is now 19 months, I gained 80 pounds. I was in the health industry at the time so that’s a tough one to swallow. I simply could not lose the weight. Operation Fit Moms helps solve that void while also creating a fun environment for moms who have struggled with their mommy weight gain and need the extra motivation from women just like them to achieve their weight loss goals.”

managing Motherhood,

Life, and a BlogWith dozens of Mom Bloggers popping up across South

Florida, it’s hard to stand out among the masses. But one Boca Raton/Delray Beach blogger is doing just that. Local Mom Scoop, a one-stop-hub of information for families across South Palm Beach County is the brain child of Heather McMechan, mother of two and wife to an actual Boca native. While Heather was born in Rhode Island, she’s called South Florida home for nearly 20 years.

Page 25: Sf mag spring 2015 final update last

Heather says life before Local Mom Scoop was filled with high fashion and travel. She started out as a women’s apparel buyer, which led her to becoming a personal shopper. Shortly after, Heather gave birth to two amazing girls. That’s when not only marriage, but all the joys of mommy-hood changed her life for the better.

“I always knewbeing a mom would be life changing,

but I didn’t think I knew just how until I became one. I love hanging with all my mom friends sharing and supporting each other and hearing what the scoop is locally. I guess I was just destined for something like Local Mom Scoop.”

And it’s with LMS that Heather soon realized she could combine her love of fashion with her love of all things mom. Much of the informa-tion she shares with her followers comes from getting together with fellow moms. Heather’s client list has become quite extensive since the inception of the company back in 2013. Top clients include the likes of Bloomingdales, Pizazz Boutique, the Palm Beach Zoo, Lynn University,

The Junior League of Boca Raton and more. McMechan was recently also asked to host Sunni Dai’s Kids Fashion Week in Miami. Heather is also very active in her community work as a member of the Junior League of Boca Raton.

“Every day I feel so blessed to be able to do what I love and also be a mom. I have the best husband in the world too who has always been supportive of this venture and am so thankful for that. I also have had the best followers who were there from day one with Local Mom Scoop. I will forever be grateful for their support. The sky is the limit with this company!”

Page 26: Sf mag spring 2015 final update last

Yesterday, I saw a commercial for a “Mom” show on a major cable network. The hosts were

describing (and showing in graphic detail) all of the things that frazzle them as moms: kids screaming and crying; messiness everywhere; never getting a break, basically all the unpleasant things about being a mom. It made me tired just watching it.

In the fast-paced world we live in, I’ve noticed more moms making appointments with me because they feel their lives are out of control; they feel burned out. One of their major concerns is that they no longer get a break, or have any “me” time. They also express a concern that they feel selfish wanting this “me” time; they wanted kids, so didn’t they automatically give up any “me” time? The answer is: No.

Moms still have a right to “me” time, whether they have one kid or six. Moms are still human beings who need rest, stress relief, and time off. Moms are not perfect, and they have a right to do less than what is humanly possible. Yes, Moms, you read that correctly: You have the right to do less than what is humanly possible. It’s time to practice a little mom self-care.

When describing self-care, I’ve always liked the analogy of oxygen masks on an airplane. The flight attendant instructs you to put your own mask on before putting on your child’s mask. Likewise for tak-ing care of yourself. If you don’t take care of yourself, it’s even more of a challenge to take care of anyone else.

If you are having difficulty figuring out what you do and don’t want in your life, ask yourself the following questions:• Is this person or activity healthy for me?

• Does this person or activity help me be a better person? (Or in the words of Oprah, does it “lift you up?”)

• What would happen if I discontinued this relationship or activity?

• Is this person or activity essential to my life?

• Am I engaged in this relationship or activity because of what I want, or because it’s what others want?

• Am I teaching my kids good self-care by maintaining this relationship or activity?

why putting

before“ME”“MOMMY”

is so important

The beauty of “no”

One of the best ways to take care of yourself is by using the word

“no” more often when demands are made of you. You might feel it is rude to turn down an offer or request, but setting up boundaries and decid-ing what you will and won’t let into your life is a healthy thing to do. Shutting the door to what you don’t want in your life also makes more room for the opportunities you do want.

FIND THE TIMEPractice self-care even in the little slivers of time you have during the day. Spending just 10 minutes thinking of a calm, peaceful scene (mine is the beach), can change the way your brain functions. It can physically alter the way your neurons communicate. And who doesn’t want happy neurons?

Trade off “me time” with a friend. You get your “me” time while your friend watches your kids, and vice versa. Remember, this is “me” time, not go-to-the-grocery-store and buy-food-for-the-masses time. Do something you want to do. If you want to go to a movie with the additional benefit of not having soda spilled on you or listen-ing to “Why? Why? Why?” incessantly, go for it. Enjoy that time. Remember, you are human. You need to refuel like everyone else. And always keep in mind that taking time for yourself and refueling makes you a better parent.

IF IT JUST GETS TO BE TOO MUCHIf you find that you are feeling blue or teary for no reason, you have feelings of worthless-ness, you don’t feel any attachment towards your kids, or you wish you were no longer around, get help immediately from your doctor, a counselor, or a crisis center. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). You can learn more about the Lifeline at www.suicidepreventionlifeline.com.

If you’ve recently had a baby and are having a difficult time cop-ing, information on postpar-tum depression can be found at PostPartumProgress.com

familyfirstfor Heat Broadcaster ERIC REID

While he is known across South Florida for his presence on the court and on-air, Boca Raton

resident Eric Reid is also a loving husband, hands-on community activist and extremely proud father of three.

Page 31: Sf mag spring 2015 final update last

“Life has been amazing over the years and I have been blessed with so many wonderful things. I have seen [the Miami Heat] win three championships. I have had the opportunity to interview some amazingly talented athletes. I have had the chance to tour to places all over the world with the most amazing staff. The Heat Or-ganization is like family, but there is nothing like THIS family (pointing to a family portrait).”

For more than twenty years, Boca Raton resident Eric Reid has been delivering the play by play action broadcast for the NBA’s Miami Heat and witnessed some amazing things while working with the franchise champions. Reid, who grew up in Massapequa, Long Island, has been living in South Florida for nearly three decades. Reid has witnessed three championships and seen many players come and go. While he spends most of his time in the “305” for work at the American Airlines Arena, he loves coming home to his Boca Raton residence. A place he says is the perfect location for raising children.

“There is a plethora of educational options here. Our two oldest went to BAK, the Performing Arts school in West Palm. [My son] Andrew became this well-known artist today and [my daughter] Phyllisia has been on the radio all over the world. Now, our youngest daughter, Dariel is following in their footsteps too. She is a bright and gifted student at Addison Mizner Elementary here in Boca. There are so many after school, fitness and music programs here. Now she is just really getting into playing the violin. I’m just so proud of all of them. I really am.”

So just how does Eric manage life on the road, life as a father, life as a husband and life getting involved in his community? A big smile goes across his face as he talks about his wife, Sonide.

“My wife is my rock. She has raised all three of these kids to be the amazing and well-rounded youth they are today. My schedule can be rigorous at times. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am when I walk through that door and am greet-ed by their hugs and kisses.”

Eric says some of his most mem-orable moments he has had over the years have been no doubt with the Miami Heat courtside winning championships. He also says some of the greatest times he has had have also been in Boca Raton with his family. The best of both worlds.

REID’S COMMUNITY WORK Eric volunteers and raises support for such groups as:

• Project Medishare for Haiti

• The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

• The Lucanus Developmental Center

He also is quite proud of his work with the “Call of the Game Dinner and Golf” Event he co-hosts with his Miami Heat broadcast counterpart Tony Fiorentino.

“As a father, I want to be a role model for my children. Giving back is doing just that. I hope I instill in them that by doing so, we can make this place a better world. It’s a big thing in our family.”

PTC is a national grassroots organization has more than 1.3 million members and 57 chapters across the United States, and works with tele-vision producers, broadcasters, networks, and sponsors in an effort to stem the flow of harmful and negative messages targeted to children. The PTC also works with elected and appoint-ed government officials to enforce broadcast decency standards. Most importantly, the PTC produces critical research and publications doc-umenting the dramatic increase in sex, violence and profanity in entertainment. This information is provided free of charge so parents can make informed viewing choices for their own families.

The night kicked off with an introduction from State Attorney Dave Aronberg before Tim Winter, President of the Parents Television

Council™, said a few words about their newest board member, Gary S. Lesser.

“The more we get the word out whether it be in grass route efforts or social media, the more our message will spread across the US. We are thrilled to partner with Gary in spreading the word about what our organization can do. He believes in our mission and all we stand for. He is a great advocate of the PTC™, and we are thrilled to have him join our board,” Tim Winter said.

The Parents Television Council is a non-partisan educa-tion organization advocating responsible entertainment. It was founded in 1995 to ensure that children are not constantly assaulted by sex, violence, and profanity on television and in other media.

As a father himself, Gary’s passion for the organization was evident. “What my children watch and what kids in this community watch needs to be monitored. I hope to be an extension of the PTC in letting other parents know the correlation between violence on TV and real life. I am honored to be part of such a wonderful group.”

Gary is also the Managing Partner of Lesser, Lesser, Landy & Smith, PLLC, a personal injury law firm known for the tremendous work that they do to serve clients, their families, and our community. The Firm serves all of Palm Beach and Martin Counties with offices in West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, and Stuart. To learn more about the Firm, visit www.lesserlawfirm.com.

As an Executive Coach and Athlete, I have helped professional athletes, CEOs, salespeople, kids and people just like you increase their own clarity and reach their personal peak performance. Let me share with you (2) two powerful tools that I use in my coaching sessions.

TOOL 1The Awareness (LOVE) LadderThe Awareness Ladder is key to knowing where your emotions are throughout your day. I put the Awareness Ladder at the top of the page so that you can copy it or cut it out and put it where you can see it. You can also download it for FREE at www.theathleticmindset.com.

TOOL 2Fuel for FOCUSFirst, ask yourself: What are three things I need to focus on to reach my goals today? If you want to think clearer, move more swiftly and score like an athlete; then pay attention to Tool #2. Every athlete has three absolutes in playing to win. They must:

1. BE Organized2. BE Focused3. BE Fueled

The average person spends 20 minutes a day looking for misplaced items. BE-ing organized means you know where everything is, and you don’t waste time looking for things. Professional athletes prepare their gym bag the night before. Preparing ahead of time, means you will BE orga-nized and on track to achieving your goal.

If you chase two rabbits, you lose two rabbits. Professional athletes get what they want more times than not, because they stay focused on one thing at a time… they FOCUS on one rabbit. To catch one rabbit, you must BE FOCUSED on only one rabbit.

Whether you’re on a big project at work, or you’re taking an exam at school, your body and brain need the proper fuel to keep going.

Before you reach for one of those dangerous energy drinks filled with synthetic caffeine, high fructose corn syrup, or artificial sweet-eners, read the label. One solution: adding just (2) two liquid nutrition phytonutrients to your diet. My clients who followed this advice noticed an increased ability to FOCUS throughout the day with natural energy and no crash, and without stressing their adrenal glands. Some clients even gave it to their kids (who had trouble focusing for long periods) and noticed incredible results in greater concentration and focus. My favorite is a powerful combination of 10 extracts-in-one called, Premium Focus*.

Most of my clients want to see quick results. Start somewhere, and keep reaching for the top of your ladder!

*To get Premium Focus, more tips and other great energy enhancers, visit our website: www.TheAthleticMindset.com OR [email protected].

CREDIT (part one of a five part series)

A family’s financial health is one of the most important aspects of a happy, healthy family. I am often surprised by the lack of basic financial knowl-edge which is vital to a family’s financial health. This is the first install-ment of a five part series designed to educate families on core financial health items. This article will focus on Credit Score, Credit Reports, and the difference “good” credit makes.

FACT – According to the Bankrate.com loan calculator, someone with a “Poor” Credit Score (620 or lower) who borrows $28,500 over 65 months to buy a car will pay $1,009.20 more in interest in the first 12 months than

someone with an “Excellent” Credit Score (750 or higher)!

{Do I have your attention?}

Most people only worry about their Credit Score when it comes time to borrow

money. However, it has a much broader impact. A Credit Score is a number used to assess and predict creditworthiness (i.e., the “risk” of whether you will repay your debts). Increasingly, it is also being used to assess character. That may not be “fair”, but it is a fact. Credit Scores not only determine wheth-er you qualify for a loan, but also the interest rate; in other words, your Credit Score deter-mines your cost of borrowing money.

The Credit Score is an element of your Credit Report. In addition to loans, Credit Reports

family financial health

are commonly used in: determining insurance rates, employment screening, establishing security clearance, obtaining state profes-sional licenses and even renting real estate. The Big Three agencies (Experian, Transunion and Equifax) are required to provide you with a free copy of their credit report once every 12 months. Visit: www.annualcreditreport.com to learn more.

By borrowing money wisely, within your means and by paying it back on time, you maintain a good Credit Score. However, even when you pay your debts on time, sometimes your Credit Score may be lower than it should

be. Why? As hard as The Big Three try to be accurate, mistakes are made. Unless you find and correct those mistakes, they stay on your credit file. It is as simple as that. To obtain and maintain an “Excellent” Credit Score (i.e., 750 or above), you must have a way to mon-itor and manage that Score. Until now “self-help” was not an option. But, due to recent advances in technology, there are services that can help you monitor and manage your Credit Score; and “boost” it up. One example of such software is ScoreNavigator™. Visit www.creditprofessor.com to learn more.

Maintaining a healthy Credit Score is a vital part of your family’s financial health. Take steps to get – and keep - your Score as high (and healthy) as possible.

As a parent, there are few places in your home that are sanctuaries from the loving, laughing, smiling,

screaming, crying faces of your children. It is important that you do have some places where the children are not allowed. Set boundaries. Start early. One thing that ought to be an absolute in your home is to let your kids know from the start they cannot sleep in bed with you. As soon as you let them in, the problem has started. Don’t fall for special circumstances either. You can sleep in your own bed, even if your foot hurts.

bedroomgetting your

If your child is already sleeping in your bed, then break the habit. Start small with something like having your child take a nap alone in his or her bed during the day.

Use positive language and actions to reinforce your child. Praise him or her on being “so big for

sleeping in bed all night” and reward that behavior

in the morning. I’m not going to lie. I am a big fan

of bribery too. “If you sleep in your bed all night like

a big girl, I will give you candy in the morning,” has

left me feeling very rested many mornings.

Let your kids fall asleep in their own bed at night. Don’t let them

fall asleep with you holding them

in the chair or with you in their bed

too. Then, when they wake up, they

may feel scared or upset that you

left since their last memory was

sleeping with you.

Forcing your child to sleep in her own bed isn’t just about you, its also about the child’s sense of

independence and self-security.

Be consistent. It’s hard, but in the

long-term, it’s worth it.

It’s no surprise that bullying has been a real problem schools and parents across the U.S. have had to face

over the years. In fact, one in every six middle school children in the U.S. will be bullied this year alone. Stu-dent bullying incidents are prevalent across the country, according to a May 2011 report from the National Cen-ter for Education Statistics. It shows about 32 percent of all students’ ages 12-18 reported in a survey that they were bullied at school during the 2007-08 school year.

That was just the case for Rebecca Zerbo a few years back when she was in 6th Grade. But now this 15 year old Olympic Heights Community High School student turned a situation with a school bully into a self-empowerment cam-paign and entrepreneurship. What started as a series of laminated cards with confidence-building affirmations has evolved into Positive Pockets, a 501(c)3 organization “devoted to empowering others who have suffered from the negative effects of bullying and other social/emotional issues.” Over the past few years, she’s taken that campaign across the country and even caught the attention of our First Lady, Mrs. Michelle Obama. This spunky and super intelligent girl says she is just getting started on her journey to help teens.

“I can’t believe where things have gone to where they are today. I am so blessed, but I have a long road ahead. I want to do so many other

wonderful things in life to help others. The sky is the limit!”

Positive Pocket has programs for schools all around the nation with ready-to-use curriculum and materials that any teacher or counselor can use. It educates students on how they can control their self-esteem, self-confidence, and influence them on the importance of standing up for themselves and each other. Zerbo was just named a recipient for the Carson Scholarship this month in which she receives $1,000 towards the college of her choice. She’ll head to Fort Myers in April for the awards ceremo-ny. Launching her Positive Pockets Jeans is her next goal.

“I have the most amazing family anyone can ever ask for. My mother and father have guided me in the right direc-tion and I am so thankful for all they do. I also have the best sister, 11 year old Hannah, you could ever ask for. She has always been there for me as a sister. I hope I am being a good role model as her older sister. WHAT ARE YOU DOING THIS SUMMER?

Page 41: Sf mag spring 2015 final update last

We all know most students finish their homework assignments upon returning home from school or shortly after supper. There are some

of benefits to switching up your morning routine and adding homework to the mix.

So, this is actually a confession. I know how important schedules are for children. But guess what? Sometimes, as a divorced working mom with an amazing, sweet, hand-some and quite frankly, perfect 8 year old son, (his name is Vincent) I forget things. I hate it, but I admit it. And well, actually, sometimes, I kind of don’t care. Why? Refer back to my list of accolades for my little dude AND I am working mom with lots to do and lots of friends and he’s got a pretty busy social life too!).

But all of that brings me to this: one night we got home, ate dinner, got to talking about 8 year old dude stuff, just relaxing, having a great night together and we forgot to do his homework. It totally slipped my mind to even ask, more over stick to the routine. I admit in this case, our nice, chatty night at home together was clearly more important and I don’t regret that.

Then in the morning, as I was checking his backpack to make sure he had every-

thing, I called to him:

Bad Mommy: “Baby...did you have homework? Did we do it??”

Vince: “Uh oh! Yes! And we didn’t do it!”

Bad Mommy: “What do you mean ‘we’ Kemosabe?’” (Which is the obvious response, from a responsible adult—who admits I was the one who said “we” first.)

Vince: “Who’s Kemo-what??” Bad Mommy: “Never mind....let’s get this done. We have time.”

And we proceeded to get his homework done, (after I hit the Keurig up for another cup of coffee) which fortunately, was only two pages therefore we got him to school on time too.

Later that evening, he said to me “Mommy, can we do my homework in the morn-ing again? It’s nice to come home and just chill out with you.” Mind you, he says this as he flops down on the couch after a long day of schooling and fun, which

was similar to my day, so I understand (that’s sarcasm, for those of you who don’t know me or what I do all day).

Instead of giving the common “No.” I said “Did you really enjoy that, or do you just want to procrastinate?” Much to my excite-ment, he knew what “procrastinate” meant and went on to tell me it was kind of nice to do it in the morning and made a fantastic argument, in my opinion: “I liked doing it in

the morning before school because it kind of felt like school because we have time limits there....to teach us to manage time better.”

Now, we don’t do homework in the morning every time. It depends on the amount he’s been assigned and we never do the reading in the morning, that is always at night. But if you dig Vince’s argument, like I did, here’s what I suggest:

1 Let them know, they have to get up X amount of time earlier to get their homework done as well as get ready. Let them know, you’re not adding to the hectic-ness of the mornings. This is their responsibility to get this done, with-out adding more heartburn to your day. In my case, I even let Vince know, the first time he doesn’t get it done in the morning will be the last time because it’s very important to get done. He’s agreed and not screwed up once—yet. (Did I say he’s awesome?)

2 Set the homework out the night before so its ready to go when you wake up.

3 As you’re setting up the night before, make sure your child does not have more homework than they can complete in the morning. My rule of thumb is no more than 45 minutes of work. Your call.

4 I allow Vince to eat his breakfast as he’s doing his home-work. For us, it gives him a relaxed feeling to mix some-thing he enjoys (eating—he eats like a person twice his size) with homework. I want him to like homework.

5 Make sure they go to bed a bit earlier to help compen-sate for the earlier rise time.

I know this sounds a bit strange but it works for us.

Some other points to mention, we don’t do this every night. Also, I do NOT foresee this being the case in high school, but so far, my third grader loves it.

Good luck!

For kids whose dream summer camp involves more technology than tennis, more programming than paintball, and more logic than lacrosse, IMACS summer camps are for you!

For over 20 years, the Institute for Mathematics and Computer

Science has been an important part of educating South Florida’s young minds by teaching them to think critically and solve complex problems using logic and creativity. IMACS began as a col-laboration of some of the finest math-ematicians and educators from around the world to develop a mathematics and computer science curriculum of extraordinary effectiveness. This unique curriculum was a part of the Broward County Schools in the 1980s and 90s until state funding for special programs dried up. Deeply concerned by the loss, the parents and students involved urged Burt Kaufman, one of the original creators of the curriculum, to continue to provide this outstanding opportunity to their children.

Burt Kaufman’s son Terry now heads up IMACS, “It really is so special to see where my father’s vision has gone to today. Such a wonderful group of highly respected mathematicians and computer scientists joined forces with my father years ago. Now there is this amazing program for truly amazing kids. Many students get hooked by our summer camp, continue with our school-year program, and then go on to outstanding college and profes-sional careers, crediting the skills they learned here when they were kids. Our mission is serious, but we teach serious stuff while also having fun!”

IMACS started back in 1993 with just 37 students. To date, the Institute has grown to well over 1,000 students. Summer camps are held at three of IMACS’ five locations across South Florida: Plantation, Weston and Boca Raton. Sterling Barrett, an IMACS stu-dent, has been part of this wonderful

program for several years. He says he knew the moment he stepped into the classroom the program was for him. “I love coming here! All my friends are doing the same things I like to do. We get to program awesome robots and work with electronics all the time. I guess that’s what I like best about this class. We are all into the same stuff. It’s really neat!”

Kaufman says it’s five wonderful days of invigorating exercise for your child’s mind! “Campers can expect each day to be filled with a variety of engaging activities that draw out creative thinking. By week’s end kids can expect to solve IMACS logic puzzles, control virtual robots, play strategic games, program computers, and build electronics projects. What other programs can offer the quality of the instructors we do here with such unique programs? It’s a perfect blend of summer fun for your tech savvy summer enthusiast!”

Costs for the full-day camp range from $420 to $564 per week and individual class costs range from $90 to $289. Families are invited to experience IMACS Summer Camp for themselves at free Open Houses in Boca Raton, Weston, and Plantation where attend-ees will have a chance to win a free week of full-day camp. In April, Open Houses will be held from 3:30pm to 5:00pm on the following dates: 4/11 for Boca; 4/18 for Weston; 4/25 for Plantation.

This summer, give your child a camp experience as unique as he or she is with a program that understands the importance of nurturing the brain, not just the body. For more information, head to their website at: www.imacs.org or contact of their office at 561.470.1178 TODAY!

IMACS Camps are open to boys and girls from 1st to 12th grade. Individual classes are also

offered for students as well as university-level courses for highly advance students. Camp kicks off June 8th and runs through August 21st. Sessions are broken out to one week

intervals Monday-Friday. This fun and exciting HI-TECH camp does for the mind what sports

do for the body. The focus is on creating a genuine understanding of the essential tools

used to solve interesting problems. No rote learning, no dry concepts, and no drill-and-kill.

D.I.Y. SPRING

D.I.Y. Rollaway SandboxBring the beach home while keeping the back-yard clutter to a minimum all for less than $20!

You’ll need:• Plastic under bed storage container with wheels

and secure top

• Two bags of play sand available at your local hardware store.

You can also use rice, dried

beans or small rocks.

This sandbox is the perfect size

for our toddler and it’s perfect for

my husband and I because it’s

not adding more kid clutter to our

backyard and it’s super easy to

wheel out of the garage when it’s

time to play. The sand stays clean,

dry and bug free since it’s sealed

and stored in the garage when

not in use. I think your family will

love it!

D.I.Y. Shadowbox

Shadowboxes are a wonderful, inexpensive

way to showcase a special family memory. In

our case, it was our child’s artwork. He was

drawn to certain colors and I loved how the

tip of the orange crayon was the most worn

down, so I added it and his favorite crayon

colors to the shadowbox with his artwork

taped to the background. There are so many

things you can do with a shadowbox which

make a great gift for parents and grandpar-

ents! This is really an opportunity for you and

your children to get creative.

Sandbox, Silhouettes & Shadowboxes

D.I.Y. Silhouette

We had a silhouette made of our son during a recent trip to a theme park and I was so dis-

appointed with the way it turned out. It looked nothing like him, so I decided I’d make my own. It was easier than I thought! I went the non-tra-ditional route with the design and chose a gray

toned paper for the silhouette which I glued onto a piece of chevron contact paper. It has a much more modern look than the one I pur-chased at the theme park. Older children will

love this fun activity:

How To:1) Take a profile picture of your child and print it out to the

size of a picture frame or glass you plan to trace. You can also

use a picture of your pet, a favorite toy or even full body photos

of your family. Get creative!

2) Secure the printed paper to a piece of card stock or scrap-

book paper of your choice with tape and simply cut around the

edges of your child’s profile.

3) If you are making a picture frame, this is your last step:

glue the silhouette to a paper of your choice and place it in

the frame. If you want to get a little more creative with your

silhouette then:

4) Tape the silhouette to the inside of a wine glass or vase

and trace the outline with a paint pen, permanent marker or

glass paint if you have a very steady hand. Fill in the outline

and voila…you’re done! If you want to make your creation

more permanent, place the glass in a cool oven and set the

temperature to 350 degrees. Allow the glass to bake for 30

minutes and then let it cool completely before removing it from

the oven.

5) If the glass is a gift, tie a pretty ribbon on the stem and

place a piece of tissue paper inside the glass to show off the

silhouette. Moms and grandmas will love it!

Gymnastics Plus owner Jay Raab took over the facility

after his stepfather Joel Helschien passed.

“Joel always tried to show me how running

this gym could change lives and truly make

an impact on our youth. I saw that first

hand over the years under his leadership.

When he passed, I wanted to continue his

legacy and ensure I brought the same kind

of quality training and unique fun experience

to these kids that he did years ago. I think we

have done just that.”

Camp GP, or Camp “Get Prepared”, kicks off June 5th and

runs through August 15th. During camp, kids can expect to get prepared for life

by developing not only their physical, but mental potential as well. As many know,

Gymnastics is a sport centered on physical abilities like agility and strength. It’s also

a sport centered on mental abilities like persistence, teamwork and self-confidence.

These skills are valuable to ALL SPORTS, as well as all facets of life.

Safety is also something facility leaders pride themselves on. While stretching

and conditioning are a mandatory part of the daily schedule, there are also built in

safety features like the custom built enclosures around the center trampoline area.

Just another added feature that sets this gym apart from others, giving youngsters

what gym leaders say is a “safer summer experience.”

Campers can enroll in as little as one week intervals or up to 10 week packages.

Aftercare is also available for as little as $15 a day. A full day of camp runs from

8:00 am to 3:00 pm. For those parents looking to increase their child’s competi-

tive capabilities in a culture of courageous kids, with creative and caring coaches,

Gymnastic Plus also offers a Competitive Gymnastics Camp.

For teens looking to get into coaching, the gym

also offers what’s call Coach in Training

(CIT), a summer long program to help

get students ready for the real

world of gymnastics coaching.

For toddlers, the facility also

has an amazing “Toddler Gym”

filled with play mats and more.

Parents can enjoy the center’s ever

so popular Parents Night Out every

Friday as well. Gymnastics Plus is located

in the Shadow Wood Square Plaza next to Evolution

Fitness. So w whether gymnastics is a core component in your child’s

life or a supplementary activity in their toolbox of healthy development,

it is a vehicle to build well balanced, confident, and successful young

adults. Head on over and sign your kids up for some fitness and fun they

will never forget!

Faith-Based FUN!It’s summer camp time and with that said,

parents want their children to experi-ence excitement, exercise, enthusiasm and sometimes, enlightenment. That’s where faith-based camps can be the perfect fit for your little ones. Camp ADVENTure at Ad-vent Lutheran School in East Boca Raton is a wonderful one-stop-spot for a camp dedicated to inspiring minds, guiding hearts, strengthening bodies and nurturing souls.

Jessica Milden’s nine year old daughter Grace has attended both the Elementary school at Advent and Camp ADVENTure. “I love both the school and the camp. The teachers are amazing. During camp [the children] have so much fun too. [They] have fun field trips and there are really fun-ny and sweet counselors at Camp ADVEN-Ture. It’s awesome.”

Vicki Randle is the Advent Admissions Manager. “Our teachers, and that includes our camp counselors too, are passionate about kids and Christ. We want the kids to have fun and also be part of a loving and nurturing environment. Our camp is a great way to step in and learn about everything Advent has to offer. In fact, we find that many kids who have taken part in the sum-mer camps have looked into or come on board as a student at the school. It truly is a wonderful place to work and be part of.”

The Advent Early Childhood School, with just over 235 students, was founded in 1968 by members of Advent Lutheran Church in response to the community’s need for high quality Christian education. There is an infant program for children as young as 6 weeks old and voluntary Pre-Kindergarten

Camp ADVENTure offers a variety of activities for all ages. Kids can attend the camp daily, weekly, or for the full summer. Some of the recent on-campus

activities have included a Bungee Run, rock climbing, super foam parties, obstacle

courses and more. Off-campus field trips have included excursions to places like: IMAX, Rapids Water Park

and Jungle Island.

The school is accredited through the Florida-Georgia District and the National Lutheran School Accreditation Agency (NLSA). School administrators are thrilled about the new offerings this coming 2015-2016 school year that include Spanish I high school credit for graduating 8th graders, “gifted” enrichment programs for students 1st-5th grades incor-porating STEM activities and concepts, 1:1 technology for Middle School students and more.

Principal Laura Bluhm explained, “We have so many great programs for students here and are thrilled to soon also bring so many more wonderful things here to our campus.”

Ten year old Sophie Messmer has been at-tending the school since Kindergarten. “The teachers are wonderful and truly care about teaching me every day. I love it here!”

Renovations and interior design can be a daunting endeavor without the right designer in your corner to help you make decisions. If you are trying to add a French flair to your home while keeping functionality and your family in mind, look no further than the Founder and President of Laure Nell, Laetitia Reino.

ASK A DESIGNER

Laetitia Reino

54 SPOTLIGHTFAMILIES.COM | SPRING 2015

Page 57: Sf mag spring 2015 final update last

Laetitia grew up in France and was immersed in the world of furniture design from an early age. She loved everything about design and the French style, and has incorporated that into Laure Nell. Building on her French origins, she offers the latest decorating ideas and trends and can design timeless interiors that will evolve with you and your lifestyle.

As a mother of two children, Nicholas and Siena, specializing in Family Home Design made sense for Laetitia. At Laure Nell, they offer residential design services with you in mind. Whether you are looking for a dramatic transformation or simple decorating guidance, her team is here to help.

They offer full interior design services including:

• Comprehensive remodels, partnering with architects and developers

• Space planning and simple room updates

• Original consulting from budgeting, material sourcing, and installation

Laetitia’s favorite color to use when designing is white. “I love softer tones throughout the house.” She says the biggest misconception that parents have when designing kids play areas or rooms is, “thinking the lights have to

be bold and bright and they don’t. I love using dim lights and dim chan-deliers throughout the house even in play areas. It sets a calming mood and resonates to the family.”

In addition to design services, Laure Nell is a destination for everything chic, simple, and unique. French in or-igin and all-inclusive in spirit, Laetitia travels the world to discover hidden treasures in women and children’s fashion. Laetitia is also the designer of Laure Nell Kids, a children’s apparel label, designed in France, manufac-tured in the US, and sold worldwide.

Doing it all can be difficult with two kids, but Laetitia tries to include her children whenever she can. “Oh yes, I include my kids when possible. Mine get a kick at helping me pick fabric and furniture —especially for playrooms! And have been known to

Laetitia Reino

craft with crown molding samples and paint swatches!”

She and her family still travel to Paris each year to see family. “Everyone just loves it. There is a special warmth I love about people in Paris. People tend to take time with lunch and truly engage in conversation. It’s a little more fast paced here in the States.” Their favorite food to cook together is known as the “Reino Sauce”. “My husband makes a great red sauce, which the recipe has been in the Italian family forever. The kids just love it over linguine and it’s a real labor of love as it can take a whole day to make. Siena is just learning to stir the sauce. Nicholas has mastered the meatball patting.”

Gulf StreamAustralian Pines

The state of Florida opened A1A in 1916 in this area, and, in the 1920s, planted Australian pines (Casuarina equisetifolia) as a windbreak on both sides of the road from Jacksonville to Miami. The trees formed a canopy over A1A, which remains only in Gulf Stream. In 1992 the state designated the two-mile stretch as a historic and scenic highway, prohibiting the removal of healthy Australian pines. Another law in 1996 allowed the town to cultivate new plants to maintain their rows of more than 300 pines, although they are banned elsewhere as environmental hazards.

COMMUNITY LEADER

As a long-time member of the Junior League of Boca Raton (JLBR),

Andrea knew that she needed to understand the community and get

involved so that she could serve our area better. She stepped into the

role of President in June of 2014, and she made it her mission to create

and track the impact that the JLBR has on the community.

The numbers are huge, and the impact that ripples through our commu-

nity is even larger. Andrea’s favorite part of her term as JLBR President

has been the “Moment of IMPACT” stories that have been sent back to the

league. JLBR members saved the day by donating food to Boca Helping

Hands whose food pantry was running dry at the end of their fiscal year.

Local students were given after school program opportunities at Milagro

Center because of money saved by the JLBR supplementing diapers to

their younger siblings. Students are sent home with food for the weekend

to ensure that they don’t come to school hungry on Monday morning.

These are just a few examples of the impact that the JLBR has had on the

Boca Raton community through Andrea’s outstanding leadership.

Andrea’s most important role is being a loving and dedicated mother to Ryler

(age 4) and Briella (age 2). Rich, Andrea’s husband and an amazing chef, is

also her best friend and constant supporter of anything she is doing. Through

her actions and commitments to the community, Andrea is creating a legacy

and setting an example for her children to live by. At home, family time is

most important. “I always try to be present and in the moment with my kids

and my entire family,” Andrea said,

Andrea Garcia is also an accomplished Senior Sales Consultant at Oasis

Outsourcing, the largest privately held Professional Employer Organization in

the country. She also sits on an Advisory Board of KidSafe, a nonprofit that

includes child safety experts, mental health professionals, educators, authors,

public speakers, and moms on a mission to keep all children safe from child

abuse, bullying, and internet dangers.

Many members of our community step up to be a leader, volunteer, and make a difference.

One person who stands out in Boca Raton is Andrea Garcia, and she is quickly becoming known for the IMPACT that she is having across Palm Beach County. Stepping up to tackle some of the area’s toughest problems is just the beginning of what this Super Mom can do.

As of February of 2015, through Andrea’s leadership, the League has logged more than:

i 3,000 hours volunteeredi 269,976 diapers donatedi 15,770 meals servedi 6,830 pounds of food donatedi $150,000 fundraisedi 140 hours of member training

How does she juggle life as a working mom?

“I am a list person. I start my Sunday off by making a list. Every day, I make changes to

that list. It’s how I stay on top of things.”

Business owners are always search-ing for new ways to market their

company. With so many opportuni-ties popping up every day, it can be challenging to decide where to spend marketing dollars. We all want to believe there is some magic bullet or secret that will generate massive results with no ef-fort and little budget. Unfortunately, that doesn’t exist. However, there are some key factors to consider when creating a marketing plan in order to increase revenue. While there are a number of strategies out there, I am excited to share five marketing strategies that may help grow your business:

’ Know Your Numbers

and Set Realistic Goals

Even if you’re not an avid fan of the TV show

Shark Tank, you’ve probably watched an

episode or two. I absolutely love, and at the same

time cringe, when the sharks start asking the

entrepreneurs about their numbers. If you don’t know your numbers, how can you plan for growth? Knowing your monthly revenue,

cost to acquire a new customer, lifetime value

of a customer, etc… are extremely important.

Understanding these numbers is the only way you

can decide how much you can allocate towards

your marketing budget and how much you can

realistically expect to grow year over year.

Marketing Strategiesto Help You Grow Your Business·5·

(Create an Effective

Social Media Strategy

Posting on Facebook every day does not equate

to an effective social media strategy. If you’ve

tried social media, but still think it doesn’t work,

chances are you didn’t have the right strategy.

Choosing the right social networking site for your business is the first step. Once you have discovered where your clients

are, you can create a strategy that gets them

engaged. One of the most frequently asked ques-

tions I get is: “How often should I post?” I would

say a better question is: “What are you posting?”

Creating content that your prospects, clients and

customers care about and want to see will set

you apart from your competition. That means

thinking through your customer experience and

deciding what is most valuable to them. Waking

up one morning and trying to figure out what to

say to your audience isn’t going to cut it.

Fortunately, even with a limited budget, you can

generate great results when you know how to

leverage certain features like Facebook’s fan

advertising, boosted posts, custom audiences,

lookalike audiences, offers and sweepstakes.

Finding the perfect strategy may take some time,

but be consistent and stick with it until you find

your place.

Marketing Strategiesto Help You Grow Your Business

) Invest in Local Search

MarketingHow many times have you Googled

something today? Oh, what would we

do without it? 59% of consumers use Google every month to find a reputable local busi-ness. And 61% of local searches

result in a purchase. Those numbers

alone should get you excited about

investing your dollars towards local

search. One of the most important

factors to consider when you decide to

invest in search marketing is creating

the right ads, and making sure your

website and/or the landing pages

those ads go to are ready to convert visitors into hot prospects and/or clients. It is important to include

a strong call to action and of course provide lots of value so the person is excited to take action.

*Email Marketing is Alive and Well

While social media may be all the rage and has everybody talking, email marketing is where it’s at

because it delivers the highest ROI for many companies. When you post something on social media, it

will never reach all of your fans and followers so you don’t know who actually saw it. But with email,

your message is getting delivered directly to their inbox. Some people may not open it,

but you can clearly see who did. And if they didn’t, you can send it again.

There are some important factors to consider before hitting the send button. First, write a compel-

ling subject line that entices someone to open it. Second, provide lots of value to the reader and/or

include an amazing offer. No, 10% off isn’t exciting. Third, include a strong call to action. At the end of

your email, tell the reader what you want them to do. Whether it’s calling to book an appointment or

clicking through to your website, let them know what the next step is.

+Retargeting

Retargeting is one of the most revolutionary things to have happened in digital marketing over the

last ten years. It enables you to advertise to people who have visited your website and left. It’s hap-

pened to all of us. You visit a website and start browsing, but jump off before making a purchase. You

get back to your computer and you immediately start seeing ads for that company all over the place.

That is retargeting. Sneaky? I say smart. One of the best parts about retargeting is how cost-effective

it is. You can use a company like Adroll.com or set up your campaigns directly through Facebook. If you want to get more traffic back to your website and build your brand, retarget-ing should be part of your marketing plan.

These are five marketing strategies I suggest incorporating into your business. However you decide

to market your company, be sure to have the right strategy in place. Even if you don’t have a huge

budget, leveraging the right tools, creating the right plan and being consistent will help you generate

results. If you have any questions about your digital marketing strategy, please email me at kate@

katevolman.com. Happy Marketing!

A quarterly feature from our partners the Boca Raton Police Department!

The following list of tips will help safeguard your personal information:• The best defense is to file your tax returns as early in the season as possible

to prevent someone who already has your information from beating you to it. The IRS has a new program which allows you to get an Identity Protection PIN. You can get one today and file your taxes at a later date at www.irs.gov/getanippin.

• If you have a third party prepare your tax return, be sure to research the tax preparer thoroughly before providing your personal information. Check reviews and references.

• Be aware that the IRS will only contact you through the US Mail. Do not respond to requests for information by phone, email, or any other means. The IRS will not dictate how you must pay your bill, nor will they give you an ultimatum. If you have any questions about your tax bill, call the IRS at (800) 829-1040.

• Ensure that your home wifi network is secured with a password and con-sider installing a firewall, especially if you are filing your tax return electronically.

• If you have any doubts about the security of your home internet connection, consider mailing the return directly from a post office. Never send outgoing mail from an unsecured home mailbox.

INTRODUCING OURcommunity cop corner

Tax season is upon us and the Boca Raton Police Department is continuing our “It’s not child’s play,” video campaign. This most recent video urges citizens to file their tax returns early and to protect their personal information. The actors in the video are cute, the message is serious.

• Purchase a quality cross-cut shredder and always shred all sensitive infor-mation, including any tax preparation documents that you do not need, bank statements, credit card statements, and other mail, such as preapproved credit card offers.

• Visit www.annualcreditreport.com and request your credit report annually. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires each of the three credit bureaus to provide you with a free credit report once every 12 months. To keep a con-sistent watch on your financial safety, consider staggering the requests from each bureau every four months throughout the year.

• If you find that your social security number has been compromised, contact the IRS ID Theft Protection Unit at 1-800-908-4490.
