There is no deeper hunger and thirst in us, no deeper desire in children. What a privilege it is for a catechist to have a role in shaping the young for true love! But this depends above all on parents actively orchestrating a home life with a rhythm set by the “source and summit of the Christian life”— the Eucharist. The catechist should seek out opportunities to assist parents in this. It is our hope that the practical advice presented here will be helpful. The Eucharist shapes Human Desire within God’s Desire Raising children so that they can truly love requires painstaking attention to wean children from an expectation of instant gratification. As parents, we often have to say no, because we are saying yes to their happiness. We want to empower them to rise into the freedom of virtue, which can give itself away without reserve, whether in marriage, priesthood, religious life, or as a celibate gift of self “in the world.” But how can a love capable of sacrifice be cultivated in a culture of consumerist self- gratification? How can love flourish in the digital age, which trades wisdom for diversion? How can love survive in the hook-up culture? The Eucharist makes it possible. God gives himself to satisfy our hunger and thirst for love. It is within the love of God that all human possibility arises. “In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins” (1 Jn 4:9-10). God the Father’s unconquerable love for us moves him, as it were, to sacrifice his everything, his only-begotten Son, Jesus. In the Eucharist, the Son offers himself to the Father by the power of the Holy Spirit, while he at the same time offers himself to us. After consecration, there he is on the altar. Under the appearance of bread and wine, there is Jesus, and only Jesus—really and truly present— in the mystery of his suffering, Death, and Resurrection Why does Jesus choose to become so helpless, to come in the appearance of bread and wine? Not only because man hungers and thirsts for God. Rather, God desires man first. These two desires—one divine, one human— meet in the Eucharist. In every Missionaries of Charity chapel, the words “I Thirst” are inscribed next to the crucifix. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta said simply, “Jesus is God therefore his love, his thirst is infinite” But when God loves, he does not help himself. He gives himself. The Cross-Eucharist alone can satisfy the hunger and thirst we have for an intimacy without limits. Only by the power of Christ’s self-gift can we really get inside others through a real union of mind and heart. All of our loves are unrequited until they are found within the life of God. How long will his love for us go unrequited? (to be continued)

PREMISE To be understood and loved. There is no deeper hunger and thirst in us, no deeper desire in children. What a privilege it is for a catechist to have a role in shaping the young for true love! But this depends above all on parents actively orchestrating a home life with a rhythm set by the “source and summit of the Christian life”—the Eucharist. The Eucharist shapes Human Desire within God’s Desire

Raising children so that they can truly love requires painstaking attention to wean children from an expectation of instant gratification. As parents, we often have to say no, because we are saying yes to their happiness. We want to empower them to rise into the freedom of virtue, which can give itself away without reserve, whether in marriage,

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of the Annunciation Roman Catholic Parish is a people of living faith rooted in the Gospel,

centered on the Eucharist and led by the Holy Spirit. We are inspired by the example of Mary to continue the mission of Jesus Christ by ministering to all.

Annunciation Parish Website: www.annunciationparishabq.org

CANOSSIAN GOLDEN JUBILEE Our faithful have been blessed with an outpouring of grace and love since the arrival of the Canossian Sisters 50 years ago. Together we have grown side by side in the service of God’s holy people. The sainted foundress, Magdalene of Canossa rightly set the course by acclaiming that Jesus is not loved because He is not known and set about the glorious task of “Making Jesus Known and Loved.” Today we commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the ar-rival of a spirituality designed to raise the faithful to new levels of love for the Lord. Please join us for a special Jubilee Mass next Sunday, July 31st at 12:00 p.m. here at Annunciation Parish followed by a reception in the parish gym. Congratulations and blessings!

THE GOSPEL AND CATHOLIC CHARITIES In both parables of today’s Gospel, the hidden treasure and the pearl, someone finds an incredible treasure (the Kingdom) and goes and sells all that he has in order to obtain that treasure. The Kingdom of Heaven is something that we as Catholics strive for here on earth and when we pass away. We are taught that the King-dom of Heaven, on earth and after we pass away, is so fabulous that we would give everything we had for it. In Jesus’ teachings we learn that it is wise to love God and the Kingdom of Heaven more than worldly posses-sions. How do we find and obtain the treasure of the Kingdom of Heaven in our midst? By letting go and let-ting God gently direct your life.

In Albuquerque we receive about 300 refugees from 26 different countries yearly. Refugees are people seeking protection from the U.S. on the grounds that they fear persecution of race, religion, membership in a social group, political opinion or national origin, in their homelands. Refugees are in need of acceptance and love in their new home communities. One way in which we can live the Kingdom is by accepting, loving and serving those who

are struggling. Refugees are in need of many things such as English conversation partners and household items. Most importantly refugees are in need of a community recognizing their presence, supporting them in prayer and assisting them to make the transition from a devastating scenario in their home countries to their new home in Albuquerque. For more information on Catholic Charities’ Center for Refugee Settlement and Support, please call 505-724-4670.

MEN UNDER CONSTRUCTION Archbishop Sheehan encourages all men in the Archdiocese to attend Men Under Construction 2011. This men’s conference is on Saturday, August 6th at the St. Pius High School gym in Albuquerque. For only $25 (in advance), you get a Twisters burrito for breakfast, Dion’s sub for lunch, but far more importantly, real life examples of men helping men be better husbands, fathers, and members of our church, all with a stronger

Catholic faith. Our keynote speaker is NFL All-Pro Danny Abramowicz sharing how he has re-dedicated his life to God through his EWTN “Crossing the Goal” ministry. Go to www.MenUnderConstructionNM.org, or call 505-831-8253. Get a friend to join you!
