Two Part Verbs
Son formados por un verbo y una palabra extra la cual es usualmente una preposición.
Estos verbos se clasifican en dos categorías:
● Inseparables● Separables
INSEPARABLES
● Las dos palabras que forman el verbo deben ir siempre juntas.
The teacher called on Alice
SEPARABLES
● Un nombre o pronombre puede ser intercalado entre las dos palabras que forman al verbo.
● Con un nombre:
Betty called up Carol on her new phone
Betty called Carol up on her new phone
● Si los nombres son modificados por una frase o una oración esta debe ser puesta después del verbo completo.
Betty called up Carol, who lives next door, on her new phone.
● Con un pronombre: un pronombre es puesto siempre entre las dos palabras que forman al verbo separable.
Betty called her up.

¿Para que los Utilizamos?
Los combinamos con el auxiliar “Will” generalmente para responder a pedidos. Observa:
● Nouns
Turn down the TV

● Pronouns
Turn it down --> Bájalo (El volúmen)
Pick them up --> Recógelas (Tus cosas)

STRESS
● Las dos partes del verbo reciben la misma acentuación.

CAN
We use can to ask for permission to do something (Podeos usarlo para pedir permiso para hacer algo)
● Can I ask a question, please?● Can we go home now?
CAN
● We use can to give permission (Usamos Can para conceder o dar el permiso):
● You can go home now if you like.● You can borrow my pen if you like.
CAN
● We use can to say that someone has permission to do something (Usamos Can para decir que alguien tiene permiso de hacer algo):
● We can go out whenever we want.● Students can travel free.
COULD
Could is more formal and polite than can (Could es mas formal y educado que can ):
● Could I ask a question please?● Could we go home now?
MAY
● May is another more formal and polite way of asking for permission (May es otra manera mas formal de pedir permiso):
● May I ask a question please?● May we go home now?
MAY
● May is a more formal and polite way of giving permission (May es una manera mas forma de conceder el permiso):
● You may go home now, if you like.
MAY
● May is a more formal and polite way of saying that someone has permission (May es la manera mas formal de decir que alguien tiene permiso):
● Students may travel free.
COULD & WOULD
● We use could you and would you as polite ways of telling or asking someone to do something (Usamos “could you” y “would you” como una manera educada de decir o pedirle a alguien que haga algo):
● Could you take a message please?● Would you carry this for me please?● Could I have my bill please?
Can and will are less polite (Can y Will son y suenan menos educados que los anteriores):
● Can you take a message please?● Will you carry this for me please?

● Would you mind turning the stereo down ?(¿Te molestaría bajar el volumen del estereo?)
● Would you mind not closing the door, please ?
● Would you mind keeping the noise down ?
Would you mind turning the stereo down ?
A= No, certainly not.
Would you mind not closing the door, please ?
A= No, I’d be happy to.
We use: can, could,will, would, would you mind + ing to make polite requests.
Infinitive and Gerunds for Uses & Purposes
Los propósitos pueden ser expresados de dos maneras en inglés
● The Infinitive alone
I use my cellphone to send messages
Cellphones are used to send messages
Al utilizar el infinitivo usamos “TO + verb”
● The gerund
I use my cellphone for sending messages
Cellphones are used for sending messages
Al utilizar el gerundio se usa la preposición “FOR + verb (ing)” ; en tanto en español ambas formas son traducidas como infinitivo.
● I use my cellphone to send messages
● I use my cellphone for sending messages
● Cellphones are used to send messages
