INDUSTRY OVERVIEW
Looking at Europe as a whole, total construction output moved past €1.4 trillion in 2018, a rise of approximately €70 billion on the previous year.
To give scale to the importance of this market in global terms, Europe’s output is around a third greater than that of the United States and more than three times that of Japan.
As for the significance of construction within Europe itself – it currently accounts for nine per cent of GDP, consistently rising from 8.6% in 2016. Construction is clearly an increasingly important factor in the economic health of Europe.
Furthermore, construction now directly employs approximately 14.8 million workers, accounts for almost a third of all industrial employment and keeps some 3.3 million enterprises in business. In terms of construction output, Europe enjoyed 3.5% growth – and is forecast to have grown again by the end of this year.
THE WORLD’S LARGEST AND MOST ADVANCED CONSTRUCTION MARKET IS ALSO A CRUCIAL DRIVER FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH IN EUROPE
THE FUTURE IS BRIGHTSome of the world’s largest and most complex construction and infrastructure projects are taking place in Europe – with an increasing number anticipated…
The European Commission’s investment policy is expected to mobilise around €650 billion between now and 2027, bringing with it the prospect of some truly transformational projects in some of Europe’s most needy nations.
New housing and civil engineering projects will drive growth in construction output, along with road and rail infrastructure projects aimed at connecting economies and spreading wealth throughout the continent.

FINANCIAL ANALYSIS: TOTAL REVENUES FOR CE-100*
Total revenues for this year’s CE-100 (Europe’s 100 largest contractors) which is based on 2018 figures, came to €469.6 billion. This represented a rise of 3.5% on the 2017 figure of €453 billion, which itself was up 6.09% on 2016.
The industry appears to have recovered well from the huge dip seen in 2009, when the total revenue in the CE-100 league table was €378 billion.
*The CE-100 annual feature published in the September issue highlights revenues of the largest contractors in Europe and offers a snapshot of their rise or fall in recent years.

FRANCE France’s construction industry had largely recovered in 2017, driven by positive developments in regional economic conditions. The industry is expected to continue to register positive growth between now and 2022, driven by investments in transport infrastructure, energy, commercial and industrial projects.
The French construction equipment market grew by 9% to 35,000 units in 2018, and this figure is forecast to grow again, due to tax breaks, an anticipated increase in infrastructure spend and the vast Grand Paris Project.
GERMANYThe key driver for the construction market in Germany is the growing demand for housing units, along with public construction projects. The industry continues to perform solidly and the outlook for 2020 remains positive.
The German construction equipment market grew by around 12% in 2018, to just over 43,000 units.
As a measure of how significant this figure is, it has only been topped once before in history, in 1992 – following the country’s reunification.
UNITED KINGDOMLatest forecasts published by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) predict that construction output in the UK will grow by an average of 1.3% a year over the next four years. The biggest increase is expected in public housing, which is pulling ahead as infrastructure projects slow.
The UK saw growth of 8% in equipment sales, thanks largely to numerous high-profile projects, including Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant, the Thames Tideway Tunnel and the HS2 high-speed rail project.
FOCUS ON MAJOR MARKETS
The April issue will contain a country report on France, discussing the construction industry within this region.
September’s issue will feature a country report on Germany, looking at the sector along with major projects.
The November’s country report will focus on the UK, latest updates on key projects and the sector as a whole.

Europe’s top contractors
T he top ten places in the league table have seen no movement this year, with
every company maintaining their rank.
Vinci has remained number one since the CE-100 league table was started 17 years ago, so it perhaps comes as no surprise that the French contractor has maintained its position at the top.
In its full-year 2017 financial results, Vinci reported growth in revenue from both its French and international activities.
Total revenue grew from €38.07 billion in 2016 to €40.88 billion in 2017. Within that, revenue from Vinci’s French activities increased from €22.42 billion in 2016 to €23.68 billion in 2017, and revenue from its international activities rose from €15.66 billion in 2016 to €16.57 billion in 2017.
The company’s EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) also grew, from €5.97 billion in 2016 – when it represented 15.7% of revenue – to €6.5 billion in 2017 – representing 16.2% of revenue.
Looking specifically at Vinci’s construction business, revenue increased from €13.68 billion to €13.96 billion between 2016 and 2017, while EBITDA rose from €529 million to €547 million.
Looking at the top 20, the biggest mover was another French company, Spie, which climbed six positions, from 20th place to 14th place.
In 2017, the firm’s revenue grew by 24.8% at constant currency, or 5.8% excluding SAG (selling, administrative and general expenses), from €4.94 billion in 2016 to €6.13 billion in 2017. At

METHODOLOGY: The CE-100 is based on sales revenues in 2017 – either full or financial years. It is compiled from a range of sources including audited annual accounts, companies’ own statements of revenues and information from reputable third parties such as Dun & Bradstreet. In some cases CE has estimated company revenues.
Financial analysisTotal revenues for this year’s CE-100, which is based on 2017 figures, came to €453 billion. This represented a rise of 6.09% on the CE-100 2016 figure of €427 billion, which was up just 0.23% on the total revenue figure for 2015.
This is in line with reports that 2017 has been a stronger year for the European construction industry, giving reason to believe that the market is well on the way to recovery. It was recently reported at a Euroconstruct conference in Germany, for instance, that growth figures in 2017 for the European construction market reached their highest level since 2006, and this was helped by an upswing in both the European and global economies.
Operating margin has also been on the rise, increasing to 6.41% of revenue in 2017, compared to 2016 when it was 5.76% of total revenue.

the same time, Spie’s EBITDA also improved from €341.9 million in 2016 to €388 million in 2017, representing a 13.5% increase.
Overall, the eight French companies listed in the table accounted for almost a quarter of the total revenues of the top 100.
The country with the greatest number of firms in the league table is the UK, and they account for just under one fifth of the total revenues of the top 100.
It was also from the UK that the greatest number of upward shifts were seen – although Carillion, previously ranked 19th, has of course disappeared from the table since it went into liquidation at the start of 2018.
Lemminkäinen also disappeared because it was merged into Finnish contractor YIT this year.
The most significant upward shift in the table was seen by Spanish
contractor Isolux Corsan, which jumped 19 places to number 53. However, in July of last year, it was announced that the company had applied for bankruptcy proceedings and its president, along with six members of the board of directors, submitted their resignation. New directors were subsequently appointed.
A few companies are new to the table this year, highest among them being Italian contractor Techint Engineering & Construction, which has moved into 76th position.
In its financial results for 2017, the company reported a growth in revenue from the previous year, from €1.28 billion to €1.43 billion. However, EBITDA dropped from €104.3 million in 2016 to €62.1 million in 2017, and profits fell from €42.4 million to €16.6 million over the same period. ce
Global standingsCE’s sister magazine, International Construction (iC) has published a companion piece to the CE-100, a league table of the world’s top 200 contractors. The highest placed European contractor is Vinci in 5th position, behind four Chinese state-owned contractors. The largest of these, China State Construction & Engineering (CSCEC) achieved revenues last year of some CNY1.04 trillion (€130.23 billion) – making it more than three times the size of Vinci.
Apart from the Chinese contractors, the other global players of a comparable size to Europe’s top ten come from other more economically developed countries,
such as the US, Japan, and Australia. Most of the CE-100 feature in the global Top 200 – the lowest placed European contractor in the global rankings is Bowmer & Kirkland, which ranked 200th in the iC global Top 200 and holds 85th position in the CE-100. The UK-based company reported revenues of €1.132 billion for 2016.For full details of the iC global Top 200, see the July-August 2018 edition of the magazine. The global
top 200
I n the latest edition of the International Construction top 200 list, there is no change at the very top of the table, with the top six fi rms all staying in the positions they occupied last
year. Chinese fi rms once again dominate proceedings, occupying all four top spots.
With construction in China experiencing a strong year in 2017 – equipment sales in 2017 increased by an astonishing 82% to take units sold to over 200,000 for the fi rst time since 2014 – their continued presence at the top comes as no surprise. Indeed, it mirrors the results of the Yellow Table (International Construction’s listing of the top 50 equipment manufacturers by revenue) in which Chinese companies saw the biggest growth. Chinese construction growth is expected to continue for the next few years, albeit at a slower rate than in 2017.
Th e top players have increased their dominance of the table, with the number one ranked construction contactor by revenue, China State Construction and Engineering, increasing their revenue from $141.5 billion to $164 billion. In second position is China Railway group, which has broken into three fi gures in terms of billions, increasing revenues from $95.6 billion to $101.4 billion, a good year in anyone's book.
Th ree Chinese companies dropped down places, but do not expect the top four on the list to move from their positions any time soon. Th e combined revenue for the Chinese fi rms is over $517 billion, which represents just under a third of the revenues of the whole table.
Chinese fi rms boasted an average operating profi t of $3.6 billion, which equates to just over 5%. Th e data shows that China-based contractors on the list, on average, had a head count of over 120,000 employees.
Vinci retains its place at number fi ve and sees decent growth from $42.6 billion to $49.8 billion. Th e French company is followed by two more European fi rms in the form of ACS from Spain and Bouygues from France (who move from nine last year to seven) before – you’ve guessed it – we get another China-

Financial review of 2017
German-based light and compact equipment manufacturer’s share price rose by 107.84%.
Record revenue figures were announced by the company half way through the year, and then in the third quarter of 2017 it reported a doubling of profits before interest and tax to €40 million, compared to €20.4 million in the same period a year earlier.
CEO Martin Lehner said, “There is no doubt that we were buoyed by strong markets in North America and Europe. However, it was the successful implementation of our growth strategy that really enabled us to outgrow the market.”
The group’s largest market, Europe, reported a 17% rise in revenue in the third quarter, with Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Benelux countries, France and Poland all performing well.
For Caterpillar, the world’s leading equipment manufacturer, the year got off to a shaky start as its headquarters were raided by US authorities, causing the company’s share price to fall by
4% at the time. In addition, four of the company’s vice presidents elected to retire in 2017.
This did not hold Cat back, though. The company’s share price increased significantly, rising steadily by 67.64% over the year.
Its fourth quarter and full-year results for 2017, revealed a promising sales and revenue rise.
The positive momentum gathered in 2017 is expected to carry Cat into a strong 2018, backed by strong order rates, lean dealer inventories and an increasing backlog.
Manitou’s share price also rose significantly, by 64.64% over the year. In the third quarter, the French-based manufacturer’s revenues of €354 million represented a 10% increase.

The company also reported that its order intake grew 51.5% for the quarter, to €312 million, while its end-of-quarter order book had increased 115.6% to €526 million, from €244 million.
The only two equipment manufacturers to suffer a decline in share price were Korean manufacturer Hyundai Heavy Industries, with a drop of 16.44%, and US-based Astec Industries, with a fall of 7.76%.
Hyundai Heavy Industries relisted on the Korean stock exchange in May, along with three spin-off companies, one of which was Hyundai Construction Equipment, which subsequently became Hyundai Construction Equipment Europe (HCEE).

European construction showed clear signs of better health in 2017, against a backdrop of improving macroeconomic conditions, writes Thomas Allen
For European construction, 2017 was a year in which the industry began to
find its feet again, supported by strengthening European and global economies.
The European Commission said overall Eurozone business and consumer confidence were at new multi-year highs towards the end of the year.
Although the uncertainties of Brexit were still very much lingering as 2017 came to a close, the negotiations were well underway at least. And while the spectre of populism still loomed, Emmanuel Macron’s convincing wins in the French presidential and legislative elections helped to keep it at bay.
Against this backdrop, the total CE Index figure increased by 17.86% over the year, and the greatest contributors to that increase were equipment manufacturers, whose overall index figure jumped by 31.52%.
Most significantly, Wacker Neuson doubled its share price over the course of 2017. The

price has since fallen, whereas HCEE’s share price has almost doubled – a good start for a company with a goal of becoming a top five ranking construction equipment manufacturer on the global market by 2023.
It should be noted that Manitowoc – whose share price jumped by 61.17% over 2017 – performed a one-for-four reverse stock split in November
Manitowoc shareholders approved the reverse stock split and a reduction of the total number of shares of common stock that Manitowoc is authorised to issue, from 300 million to 75 million shares.
CONTRACTORSTurning to contractors, the overall CE Index figure for these companies increased by 15.45%.
German-based Bauer led the pack – and came top of the league table for all listed companies – with an impressive increase of 192.78% in its share price over the year. However, this was from an all-time low just before the start of 2017, when a multi-million-dollar order backlog was taken off the books after the sale of shares in a real estate company.
Despite some minor setbacks, the company reported good overall results for the first nine months of 2017, with total group revenues rising by 22% to €1.4 billion, compared to the €1.14 billion recorded in the first nine months of 2016.
However, just at the start of 2017, the company announced that it no longer expected to be able to achieve its 2017 full-year earnings forecast as a result of
the impact of an unexpected outcome to long-standing arbitration proceedings.
While contractors clinched three of the four top positions on the league table, they also occupied the bottom eight positions.
At the very bottom was, unsurprisingly, Carillion. The UK-based company’s share price dropped by 92.64% over 2017.
Although the company did not officially go into liquidation until the beginning of 2018, Carillion was showing signs of struggle throughout 2017.
In July 2017, the group chief executive of Carillion quit, as the company issued a profit warning in its first-half trading update. The group highlighted a deterioration in cash flows on a select number of construction contracts.
It also said borrowing had been affected by worsening cash flows on construction contracts, combined with a working capital outflow as a result of a higher than
normal number of construction contracts being completed and not being replaced by new contracts starting up.
Another profit warning was issued in November.
Hundreds of sub-contractors and suppliers were left in the lurch when Carillion finally collapsed at the start of this year.
MATERIALS COMPANIESLooking at materials companies, their overall CE Index figure shifted up only marginally over the year, by 4.04%.
The biggest change was seen by Cimpor, whose share price rose by 63.64%. However, the company lost its status as a public company in September 2017, when the decision was taken at an extraordinary general meeting to delist the company from the Lisbon Stock Exchange.

The league table of the world’s biggest

positive overall year for the construction
industry and sees China-based companies
strengthening their position at the top

The global

Statistically, the European construction industry is on the crest of a wave, but it must still navigate the choppy waters of politics, socio-economic instability and a growing environmental crisis.
It is vital that leaders across all sectors have solid market intelligence at their disposal when making strategic business decisions.
The CEBMR is an annual publication which seeks to map trends across European construction. Seen by many as the definitive report on the health of the industry, the report combines the bigger economic picture with a compilation of statistical analyses to deliver meaningful business forecasts.
Within the report, the CE-100 table details revenues of the largest contractors in Europe, but also offers a snapshot of their rise or fall in recent years. The editorial team at Construction Europe offers accompanying analysis of this movement, as well as outlining possible reasons for significant variances and anomalies.

IN ASSOCIATION WITH INTERNATIONAL CONSTRUCTION MAGAZINE
PUBLISHED TWICE IN 2020
l JANUARY-FEBRUARY ISSUE l JULY-AUGUST ISSUE
Today, new technologies in construction are being developed at lightning speed. Software and mobile solutions help manage every aspect of a construction project, enabling construction firms to make better decisions, while increasing productivity and improving safety on jobsites. With skills shortages prevalent in many parts of the world, the industry is pulling out all the stops to make itself an attractive proposition for new job seekers, or those considering a career change.
In doing so, it has embraced technology across all sectors, with ergonomic consoles and touchscreen controls inside cabs, the growth of drone assistance in surveying and safety, and high-end software for machine control, fleet management and even robotic equipment.
What’s more, a huge amount of money is now being spent on R&D and construction is becoming a leader in the development of clean and alternative fuels, as well as advanced electric propulsion.
In recognition of the great strides being made by the industry, the Construction Technology supplement will inform readers of the latest products and technology as it develops within this sector.
We are increasing the size of these supplements in 2020 to reflect huge developments in the construction technology sector:
l 24 pagesl Editor’s letterl News pagesl Additional featuresl Related interview Each supplement is bound into the magazine and also printed as a stand-alone publication for distribution at trade shows.

What is remarketing?Remarketing is the process of (anonymously) following or tracking website visitors online after they have left a website site where they are served advertisements via a cookie. A cookie is a piece of data that embeds itself in the browser of the user, enabling tracking of the websites they visit.
Who is remarketing good for?Remarketing is an effective and helpful digital marketing strategy for every type of business, selling any kind of product or service. Small to medium sized businesses, and large corporations alike can benefit from remarketing.
What does this mean for visitors?Remarketing is designed to make the advertising experience as friendly to the consumer as possible. People are constantly bombarded by advertisements for things they are not interested in. Remarketing tries to combat this, connecting customers to business as easily and painlessly as possible.
