Who/Where/When
During our time at the shelter we spent
time helping in the kitchen as well as
outside.
We also restocked
the pantry and took
out trash and boxes.
What Happened?
Facts About Food and Shelter“Food and Shelter operates a 13 unit shelter program for long-term supportive living.
These units are specifically for families with minor children. Families who qualify can
stay up to 2 years with the assistance and support of a case manager who will develop an
individualized plan for services. There is no cost to residents. We consider the work
each family is doing to better themselves as their rent payment.
—Our day shelter is open 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. We often expand these hours during
extreme weather months. Cleveland County is home to many women, children and men
who live on the streets, in their cars or in camp-sites around town.
—For those individuals and families we offer a day shelter complete with bathrooms,
showers, laundry facilities, television, books, music and games. We provide extensive
case management services to this group so living on the street is no longer their only
option. ”

-Social behavior is the result of an
exchange process
-Maximize benefits and minimize costs.
-If there are more risks than there are
benefits, the relationship will be
abandoned
Social Exchange Theory
—Once we arrived at the shelter we were very uncertain about what we should
do because the lady who was in charge was busy making breakfast
—Finally she told us to organize the pantry, not any specific way, just to
organize it and restock it. After we started working the uncertainty began to
reduce because we felt comfortable with the task at hand and got to know
the kitchen staff better
—Uncertainty reduction theory occurs by questioning new acquaintances in
attempt to gather information and that’s how we began to figure out what
the shelter needed us to do.
