Servant of Christ Award
Every year, many members of Prince of Peace demonstrate the love of Jesus
through extraordinary acts of service in the church, the community, and at
home. Again this year, we are singling out a few lay members for special
recognition for their faithful service to the Lord. The recognition is called the
Servant of Christ Award. We do this not only to thank them for their service,
but to encourage everyone who labors along with them in the Lord’s vineyard
by holding them up as examples of His Spirit at work among us. God is at
work wherever acts of love and kindness are done in His name. Although we
name only a few, the Lord sees and knows all, remembers all, and promises a
far greater reward than our recognition to all who serve his people.
The Board of Servant Leaders has chosen, for the Servant of Christ Award,
three couples who have faithfully served in many roles at Prince of Peace over
many years: Congratulations to Dave & Carolyn Thomas, Bill & Eileen
Douglas and Hoppy & Chris Hohenstein! We will formally recognize them
during our 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday, August 30. May the Lord, who
has begun a good work in them, bring it to completion at the day of the Lord
Jesus Christ.

Dr. Horton Announces Retirement Plans
Dr. Wallace Horton has decided to retire November 1, 2015 from full-time ministry and from his position as Minister of Worship and Spiritual Transformation at Prince of Peace. He will have served 15 years at PoP, 34 years in the LCMS and 45 years in the Church at Large.
I have conveyed to Dr. Horton my respect for his decision as well as my sadness about it. He has earned the right to enjoy a period of rest with Joan and his family after a lifetime of faithful service. At the same time, I value his gifts highly, as do the members of Prince of Peace, and am saddened by the prospect that we will soon no longer benefit from his leadership. He has assured me that we will continue to benefit from his friendship, which is a great consolation to me and will be for all of us.
Wally has faithfully led this ministry through many changes. His place will not be easily filled. I invite you to join me in prayer firstly in thanksgiving for Dr. Horton’s service; secondly for his and Joan’s continued health and happiness, that they may fully enjoy the earthly fruits of their labors; and thirdly for guidance, that the Lord will enable us to see ahead where He desires us to go and identify whom He will raise up to lead worship in the years ahead. Letter from John Durkin
I am so excited to be here at Prince of Peace. The first three weeks have flown by and we have almost every room unpacked. Our family is so thankful for all the volunteers that helped to move us in, bring us meals and give us gift cards. The welcome we have received has been outstanding. I’ve served the church for 15 years and I’ve never been around a congregation that is so welcoming and generous.
I have been praying about our congregation for many months. I come in with energy and excitement, but I also hope to bring wisdom and tact. While some people only see "family ministry" as a term directed at the church members with young children, I'm pretty sure that's not how God sees it. Young or old, married or single, we are all heirs with our brother Jesus to our father's kingdom. In that sense we are all in the family.
I will work hard in the coming years to serve in a way that models faith, mentors leaders, and equips people to be an extension of grace in their homes, and in the community. Over the years I’ve learned to be sensitive to the “5 P’s”. I’ll note three of them here to provide a better understanding of what I hope to accomplish in the next 30 days or so. Each of these steps are covered in prayer.
1. Past: Knowing the past of youth and family ministry is incredibly important. I’m trying to get an idea of what we’re good at and what is loved and valued here. So, I will be asking a lot of questions and taking notes. 2. Purpose: Why does my position exist? Why are we doing youth and family ministry programs and what should they look like? If we don’t know what we are aiming at, how do we know if we will ever get there? 3. People: In the next 30 days, I‘ve got to see who's on the team. Make no mistake, I’m not only talking about staff people, I’m talking about you. If you’re reading this, you’re invested already.
Ask yourself, “How can I be a part of our family ministry plan?” I’ve already met about 125 people (more than just a handshake), but I’ve only really talked with about 50 to 60. I want to double that number this month. I invite you to make a call or send an email. Seize the day! I can take these steps because of the strong support from my family Mary, Maddie, and Mike, and from our staff and lay leaders.
Do you want to find out more?
Anyone interested in youth and family ministry is invited to attend either of these duplicate meetings. Tell and Show Meetings: These are opportunities to tell part of your story, and for me to tell the ideas I have about where we could go together in family ministry. The second part of each meeting will be the show part. This will be our Sunday School teacher and confirmation group facilitator training. I can’t wait to see who God will bring to those meetings.
Tell and Show Meeting : Wednesday, August 26th from 10 a.m. to noon in Room 27 Tell and Show Meeting : Thursday, August, 27th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

The Pew Research Forum expects the population of Muslims in the U.S. to double in the next two decades. Muslims from around the globe are moving into our neighborhoods, working in the same companies, and studying alongside us in schools. This is an amazing act of God as He is bringing precious Muslims into our sphere of influence.
Recently, about 260 gathered at the Southeastern District's outreach conference, Tending the Flame, held in Richmond. Nearly 30 attended classes on sharing the hope of Jesus with Muslims in our schools, workplaces or neighborhoods. A staff member of Lutheran Social Services shared about the agency's work in resettling Afghan and Iraqi refugees in Northern Virginia. Still others shared about meeting international students or conversations with co-workers. We give thanks that some of you used the 30-day prayer guide during Ramadan. A new digital 30-day prayer guide is available to Pray for ISIS. See: http://prayforisis.com/ A local Arabic pastor mentioned recently that some are seeing visions and coming to Christ! This spring/summer, Bridges: Christians Connecting with Muslims has been offered here at Prince of Peace, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Herndon, VA, Our Savior's Way in Ashburn, VA and The People's Community Baptist Church in Silver Spring, MD. In the fall, classes will be offered at Sanctity of Life, Calvary Lutheran and Reach the Nations. Yvette Moy (703) 455-1066 [email protected]

Good news from India
In July of 2014, POP's "Love in Action" funded a 1 year training program for a class of 16 Mission India church planters. During their journey through this year of church planter training, these men and women reported that they started 23 small churches and 71 prayer cells. The Holy Spirit led them to transform 1,231 Indian people into new believers, adding to the 2,570 new believers transformed by LIA funded church planters dating back to 2001. How many new believers have been added after church planter training ended is a number known only to God. Please pray that the Holy Spirit will continue this work that has begun, until India is transformed, and that He will bless our individual outreach to our neighbors here in northern Virginia. Many thanks to the PoP members that have provided the funds to make this miracle possible.

Lay Candidates Solicited to Represent

Circuit 9-A of the Southeastern District will elect one lay
delegate and one pastoral delegate to represent the circuit
churches at the 65th Convention of The Lutheran Church—
Missouri Synod, which will be held July 9-14, 2016, in
Milwaukee. The election will be held at a Circuit Forum on
Thursday, October 1 (7:30 p.m.) at St. John’s in Franconia.
Please give thoughtful and prayerful consideration about
individuals, both men and women, who would be willing to
serve as lay delegate and alternate lay delegate and submit your
nomination to the church office or Pastor Gnewuch no later
than September 15, 2015.
The national convention of The Lutheran Church—Missouri
Synod will afford an opportunity for worship, nurture and
inspiration, fellowship, and the communication of vital
information. The convention is the principal legislative
assembly, which amends the Constitution and Bylaws, considers
and takes action on reports and overtures, and handles
appropriate appeals. The convention establishes general
positions and policies of the Synod, provides overall program
direction and priorities, and conducts business in order to
provide responsible service for and on behalf of the members of
the Synod.

Last Chance to Sign Up! Sept. 17-22, 2015 PoP Haiti Mission Trip
The trip is planned for Thursday, September 17, to Tuesday, September 22, 2015. We have room for 14 people on this mission trip, and several spots remain to be filled. Please pray for the Lord’s guidance on the possibility of your joining us. The total cost of the trip per mission team member (airfare, room and board in Haiti, etc.) is currently about $900, and there are funds available to help defray some of those costs in the event of financial need. Haiti is the most impoverished country in the Western Hemisphere, but many Haitians have great spiritual wealth! A visit to that country can be a life changing experience. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Jim Roberts at [email protected] .
Opportunity to Sponsor Village of Hope Student
Village of Hope Enrichment Team 2015 returned to the U.S. with wonderful memories of their teaching experiences. We hope the article and photos provided by Michigan teammate Kathy Adams gave you a more intimate picture of how this week is a learning marathon. Prince of Peace team members included Tom Lambiase, Michelle Heinitz and her mom, Liz Murphy. To find out about serving on next July’s team, please contact Marni Maree, VOH Board Member, Enrichment Team Leader, and member of Peace Lutheran Church, Alexandria at [email protected]. Tom, Michelle, sister Natalie, and Liz have served on this team multiple years and would also love to share their experiences with anyone wanting to know more about the experience.
Partly as a result of these members’ visits and many others, more students have become sponsored. The PoP Men’s Bible Study group, of which Tom is an active participant, currently sponsors 2 students. Michelle’s family, and other PoP members also sponsor students. As a sponsor, you would be making it possible for a child to attend the school, receive text books, school supplies, a daily meal, vitamin and medical care (at the on-site VOH Health Clinic). Every year, 40 new students begin classes at the Village of Hope. Parents also play a role in this important job of educating their child by paying a small annual fee to attend the school and to cover the cost of shoes and a uniform.
To learn more about sponsoring a child, please use this link: http://villageofhopehaiti.org/sponsor-a-child-2/. Thank you, everyone, who collected, folded, cut and packed plastic bags for my plastic bag crochet class! Students made strapped purses, hanging plant baskets and jump ropes. Students had plenty of plastic to take home with them to complete a sleeping mat as well.
“Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.” Deut.32:2

Faith Stories
Sharing your faith story is an integral component in living out your faith. Your individual story makes up the greater story—the story of God’s redeeming his people for himself. Our stories encourage other believers while God also uses them to reach those not yet connected to him.
Opportunities to share the Gospel with medical staff during the past week.
Shared Gospel of John with owner of Vietnamese Restaurant. Said he was a believer and was quite happy to get the book. Noticed on the way out a shrine to Buddha; pray the Lord will speak to him as the only way.
You can share your stories by writing them in the “Friendship Folder” at any worship service, or post your story as a comment on the http://popfaithstories.wordpress.com , or by sending an e-mail to [email protected].
Kitchen Clean-up
Thank you for bringing goodies for the recent events at PoP.
We all enjoyed sharing the treats. Now, there are dishes &
