Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The ELCA has put out a new resource, called 60-Day Journey Toward Justice in a Culture of Gun Violence. Beginning today, there is a reading, prayer or video clip for each day, helping us to be more aware of the prevalence and effects of gun violence around us. The resource highlights the advice and guidance of a number of ELCA Social Statements. It shares statistics and facts. It offers prayers and suggests things we can do to make changes. There are statements from those who have been directly affected and those who are called as first responders to acts of gun violence. It is an important collection and I strongly encourage you to use it. Each day’s entry will be posted on the CTS Website (http://www.ctslutheranelca.org/) and we will put out a week’s worth of entries in special communiques over the coming weeks. Gun violence is at epidemic proportions in our society. Our church is calling us to awareness and action. I hope that you will make use of this collection of resources and will be inspired to prayer and to action.

The Metro DC Synod has a new Bishop

Saturday, June 15, 2018, the Metropolitan Washington DC Synod elected its next bishop, Pastor Leila Ortiz. Pastor Ortiz has been serving for three years as the Assistant to Bishop Graham. She has had several points of contact with CTS in recent months. She served as New Connections Campaign coach for Pastor Kari and has been a resource in the candidacy process for all three of the CTS members who are working through the candidacy process, Leon LaCross, Michael Yesenko and Mike Evans. She will take office at the end of August and an installation service is being planned for October 12. Please keep the synod office, our current bishop and the incoming one in your prayers in this time of transition.

May 14, 2019- Council Meeting Minutes The meeting was opened at 7:32pm, with prayer concerns shared around the table. Pastoral care concerns were discussed. The agenda was approved. The minutes from the April council meeting were approved. Tom Eastlack reported that we are $157 above goal for the month of April. Chuck Eater reported that we had a negative balance for the month. We are in good shape with respect to the budget. We are spending more than income, but we expect expenses will go down in the summer. Approval of Seminary Request A motion was passed to approve our congregational support for Michael Evans’ call to ministry and to complete his congregational registration form. Approval of Funds for Tyler Smith A motion was passed to provide 1/3 of the funds needed for Tyler Smith to attend Theological Education for Youth at Gettysburg this summer. Council Recruitment Lorna, Mike Mayer, April, and Pat will be going off council. A number of people have been approached about running for council, but so far no one has accepted. May Congregational Meeting Vern and Mike Mayer are making some edits to the Time and Talent survey. Joann and Sarah will make SDG presentations. A motion was passed to recognize Polly and all the people who help with washing dishes after hospitality. This makes it possible for us not to have to use paper and plastic dishes. Tom will make out certificates for Polly, Soon, Jin, Christiana, April, Erica, and Antonia. Prayer Partnerships with Puerto Rican Congregations Pastor Kari requested that we establish prayer partnerships with two Puerto Rican congregations. We could also consider raising funds or planning a work trip to help with painting.

A motion was passed to pray for these pastors and congregations at council meetings for the next six months. We will also add their names to the evening prayer list. MINISTRY AREA REPORTS Paul will not be at the next council meeting on June 4th where we elect officers. He indicated he would be willing to accept the Vice President or Secretary position if asked, but not President. The meeting was adjourned at 9:12pm with Suffrages.
