SERIES BST1xx-6 TRANSFER ARM REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS
PERIODIC LUBRICATIONSeries BST Transfer Arms linear bearing systems are factory lubricated with FDA approved food grade lube and may not need further lubrication for the life of the unit depending on the duty cycle of the machine. Lubrication of the linear bearing system every six months however will provide extended life. The BST Transfer Arm carriage is equipped with a grease zerk for customer lubrication maintenance (see page 4 for carriage lubrication instructions).
NOTES:1. PHD recommends using Loctite® 246 thread locker on threaded fasteners.2. PHD recommends using Loctite® R/C 680 where specified (Race Locker).3. PHD recommends using food grade lubrication on metal-to-metal contact points.
HEAD REPLACEMENT1. Remove return extension springs (10).2. Remove screw (25) from rail & carriage assembly (2) using 4mm hex wrench.3. Remove gripper head (24) from rail & carriage assembly (2).4. Place new gripper head assembly (24) onto rail & carriage assembly (2).4. Apply thread locker to screw (25), using 4mm hex wrench torque to 140 in-lb [15.8 Nm].5. Apply small amount of lubricant on return extension spring hooks and re-attach springs (10).

NOTE: PHD highly recommends the application of lubrication applied to the inside of the spring hooks and the post grooves for maximum life.
Forces are calculated based on dimension from the center of the shafts to the center of the preform/bottle as shown in Figure 1. If tooling is longer or shorter than that shown, grip force will vary from the list given.
Consult PHD for grip force other than listed.
NOTE: Pull out forces are related to grip forces but will vary depending on finger tooling design. PHD springs will allow process refinement for both bottle and preform transfer.

ARM ASSEMBLY REPAIR
DISASSEMBLY1. Remove head assembly as stated in HEAD REPLACEMENT procedures.2. Remove shaft locking nut (11) from welded base assembly shaft (1, 35) using HN 5-6 spanner wrench.3. Loosen pivot arm screws (12) from pivot arm (15, 34) using 6mm hex wrench.4. If pivot arm (15, 34) needs to be removed from shaft (1, 35). It may be necessary to spread the slot to remove pivot arm. To spread the slot, place a thin
(.04 in [1 mm]) piece of metal between split of pivot arm and thread pivot arm screw into threads on pivot arm. Applying torque to screws will open the slot of pivot arm (15, 34).
5. Remove nylon insert lock nut (16) using 3/4" or 19 mm open end wrench.6. Separate lower cam bearing (14) and lower cam bearing shaft (13) using arbor press.7. Remove key (33) if applicable.8. Remove mounting flange (18) from weldment base shaft (1, 35) by placing two tall blocks underneath mounting flange on both sides of arm with shaft (1, 35)
facing up. Press down on shaft (1, 35) until removed. If bearing (19) remains on shaft, remove using bearing puller.9. Remove bearings (19) from mounting flange (18) if worn or damaged using punch and hammer.10. Remove screws (3) from rail & carriage assembly (2) and weldment base assembly (1, 35) using 5mm hex wrench.11. If required, remove shock pads (7, 29) from rail & carriage assembly (2) if damaged by removing bumper to carriage rail SHCS (8, 30) using 3mm hex wrench.12. If required, remove shock pad stop bracket (31) from base weldment (1) by removing the bracket to base SHCS (32) using 5mm hex wrench.13. Remove rivet nut (28) if applicable.14. Remove bearing mount shaft (4) from rail & carriage assembly (2) using thin 14 mm open end wrench.15. Remove retaining ring (5) from bearing mount shaft (4).16. Press upper cam bearing (6) from bearing mount shaft (4) using arbor press.17. Remove spring holder pins (9) from weldment base assembly (1, 35) if worn or damaged.

ARM ASSEMBLY REPAIR
ASSEMBLY1. Attach spring return pins (9) to base weldment assembly (1, 35), apply
thread locker to threads and torque to 140 in-lbs (15.8 Nm).2. Lubricate radial groove on spring return pins (9).3. If needed, slip rivet nut (28) into rail (2) as shown.4. Attach bumpers (7 and 29) to rail & carriage assembly (2) using bumper
to carriage rail SHCS (8, 30): Apply thread locker to threads and torque screws (8) to 2 in-ozs [.17 Nm] using 3mm hex wrench. Apply thread locker to threads and torque screws (30) to 10 in-ozs [.85 Nm] using 3mm hex wrench.
5. Attach rail & carriage assembly (2) to base weldment assembly (1, 35) using carriage to base SHCS (3). Apply thread locker to threads and torque screws to 140 in-lbs [15.8 Nm] using 5mm hex wrench. Make sure that the carriage is seated flat in the pocket of the base weldment assembly (1, 35).
6. Press mounting flange bearing (19) into one side of mounting flange (18) until flush with top surface.
7. Place bearing spacer (17) inside mounting flange (18).8. Press remaining mounting flange bearing (19) into mounting flange (18)
