The activity tracker measures the year-to-date level of economic development project activity (prospects) in the Springfield region. The Chamber and its economic development subsidiary, the Springfield Business Development Corpora-tion, serve as the lead business expansion and attraction entities for Springfield and the sur-rounding 10-county region. Also measured are the number of local business visits staff has conducted, as well as visits with site selection consultants and organizations making location decisions in our region.

The 2011 Business and Technology Expo will take place on October 6 at the Springfield Expo Center. All Chamber members and their employees are invited to attend Expo. Tickets are free and are available from any exhibitor or at the Chamber offices. This year’s exhibitor list includes many long-time exhibitors and several new exhibitors. Brenda Jackson, owner of Marketing Mix, Inc. has participated in Expo since she opened her company. According to Jackson, “When I set up my table at the Expo, it’s like opening the doors to my business and welcoming in hundreds of people. Some are old friends and many more are potential new customers. There’s no other day of the year when I can talk to so many professionals from a variety of industries in one place. I appreciate the opportunity to introduce myself to people who need promotional products. Conversations at the Expo lead to partnerships that benefit my business and the businesses that Marketing Mix serves.” Document Solutions of Springfield has participated in Expo since 1995. Owner Greg Tigges says he participates in Expo because it enables him to showcase their products, services and support staff to the community at a sin-gle venue. “We can educate clients on why our solutions are superior, and they can see it firsthand. The Business Expo also allows us to network with other participants, while they demonstrate their solutions. The Business Expo is well worth the investment and a must do for any size locally owned business,” said Tigges. There is still time to get signed up for a booth. Please visit www.spring-fieldchamber.com/expo or email [email protected] for more information.

Harmony House

This year, Harmony House, formerly known as the Family Violence Center, is cele-brating their 35th anniversary of helping domestic violence victims become survivors. With the economy the way it is and then the recent increase in domestic violence, Harmony House is pleading for the community to get involved in order to save lives. One of the main steps in helping victims of domestic violence is noticing the outward signs and behavior changes. “Employers and coworkers can reach out to those being abused and perhaps change the course of their lives. They are often times the first to notice bruises, controlling behaviors, and intimidation” says Danielle Conti, development director. Businesses can help by calling Harmony House for Domestic Violence Awareness training and materials. Harmony House is always accepting monetary donations along with clothing, furniture, household items that aid in the transition for victims moving into a new home. There is a SAFEline that is available 24-7 by calling 1-800-831-6863 or 864-7233(SAFE) for help. Or call 837-7700 for more information about how you can help by donating, volunteering, or setting up a community presentation.
