Economic Development Activity Tracker
The activity tracker measures the year-to-date level of economic development project activity (prospects) in the Springfield region. The Chamber and its economic development subsidiary, the Springfield Business Development Corporation, serve as the lead business expansion and attraction entities for Springfield and the surrounding 10-county region. Also measured are the number of local business visits staff has conducted, as well as visits with site selection consultants and organizations making location decisions in our region.

At the July 18 meeting of the Chamber board of directors, the board appointed seven individuals to serve on the Cham-ber’s Directors Nominating Committee. That committee will nominate candidates to serve on the board of directors in 2012 (see separate story page 4).

Ever thought about operat-ing a franchise? Join the Chamber on Thursday, August 9, from noon to 2 p.m. to learn more about buy-ing a franchise as an avenue to small business ownership. A panel of successful local franchisees and SCORE business counselors will be available to provide expert advice on the specific challenges and op-portunities of running a franchise.
Franchise representatives will also be on hand to discuss opportuni-ties with Subway, Maggie Moo’s Ice Cream and Treatery, Marble Slab Creamery, Great American Cook-ies and Pretzel Time. Nominating committee seeks candidates for 2012 Chamber board of directors Chamber members are invited and encouraged to nominate individuals to be considered for the 2012 Chamber board of directors. To make a nomination, contact a member of the Directors Nominating Com-mittee or submit your nomination online at www.springfieldchamber.com/board-nominations. The deadline for nomina-tions is August 17. The board of directors is the Chamber’s policy making body. The board consists of 29 members; seven are elected every year. The chairman of the board appoints three directors to one-year terms and may also appoint up to three ex-officio directors to one year terms. The immediate past chair-man and the president also serve on the board as ex-officio directors. The chairman of the board presides over all board meetings.

Dancing Mule’s mission is very simple: serve great coffee, fast and conveniently, with a positive attitude. What makes them stand apart from other coffee houses? Dancing Mule co-owners, Randy Austin and Ryan Hart, say they take coffee seriously without taking them-selves too seriously. When Austin and Hart decided to quit the automotive industry -- sell their body shop and open a coffee house -- it wasn’t just because they needed a change of pace. They developed a passion for coffee over the course of several years prior to making their dream a reality with Dancing Mule. As Austin and Hart took classes on the art of coffee brewing, they felt like there wasn’t as much heart in
the industry as in years past. Owners were not paying attention to their product as much as they were the atmosphere, says Austin. Austin and Hart believe it all comes down to making the best
cup of coffee each and every time -- without variation. Consistency was the goal. They focus on tiny details, such the weight of each batch and dose, making sure the cup of coffee is as the customer orders it and not
how the brewer thinks the customer should want it. This includes a full-service drive-thru window where each order is made just the way you like it. In the mule way, they are “stubborn about great coffee.”

Your Chamber
The Chamber is hosting a mem-bership event like no other. Teams of more than 100 volunteers will go head-to-head August 30-September 1 competing against one another to sign up new chamber members and create greater community aware-ness of the important role the Chamber plays in the Springfield area. The event is organized by Jimmy Cusano and a group called Your Chamber Connection. YCC’s specialty is high energy membership cam-paigns that allow volunteers to have “out of the box” membership fun while building the Chamber’s mem-bership base. “It’s about business,” says Cusano. “The Chamber of Commerce is the business community. This brings everyone together to build the Chamber. It’s a competitive fun setting that tells the Chamber story.”

The committee met at the Springfield Chamber on July 21 discuss emergency response efforts that took place and are currently underway relating to a string of severe weather events that have occurred in this state. The subcommittee’s findings will be included in a prelimi-nary report submitted to the Senate Interim Committee on Natural Disaster Recovery before the Legislature’s annual veto session scheduled for Sept. 14.

Mark Your Calendar The SBDC’s annual Economic Outlook Conference is designed to inform Springfield’s business community about emerging economic trends, what impact they will have in our area, and what local business and civic leaders are doing to ensure the Springfield region positions itself to capitalize on future opportunities. With policy expertise in economics and competitiveness, Ted Abernathy, executive director of the Southern Growth Policies Board, will provide the conference keynote address. The Southern Growth Policies Board is a 39 year-old public policy think tank that provides economic development research and advice for 13 Southern states. Panels of local leaders, presenting Springfield’s targeted industries and development community, will provide their per-spective on the challenges their industries are facing and how their companies are responding.

Twitty receives Leadership Award
On June 7th, Leadership Springfield awarded outgoing General Manager of City Utilities, John Twitty, with the organization’s top award for Leadership, The O. Franklin Kenworthy Award, at Leadership Springfield’s annual meeting. The O. Franklin Kenworthy Award for Outstanding Leadership was established in memory of Franklin Kenworthy, a posthumous graduate of Leadership Springfield Class III. Each year commencing in 1989, at the Annual Meeting of Leadership Springfield, Inc., the Franklin O. Kenworthy Award for Outstanding Leadership is presented to a Leadership Springfield Alumni. The recipient of the award is selected by a committee appointed by the Leader-ship Springfield President based on their commitment to Leadership Spring-field, involvement in community service activities, good citizenship, leader-ship qualities and moral standards.
Over the last year, under the leader-ship of Andrew Wells, the board of directors underwent a strategic plan-ning exercise. The result of that work is a three year plan that provides the framework for assess-ment and evaluation of all aspects of the Leadership Springfield organization, from programs to member-ship development. The work done this
year will allow us to build on the success of the past 26 years and continue to inspire, develop and connect leaders to serve the Springfield Community. I would like to invite our alumni to participate in this exciting new chapter for Leadership Springfield. I invite any interested alumni to participate in the committees of Leadership Springfield.
