Professional Development Start the NewSchool Year off Right

As you and your staff start a new school year dont forget aboutone of our most useful tools for early childhood educators TheTexas Workforce Registry (TWR) provides early childhoodprofessionals with an online account to keep track of theprofessional development they receive and make it readilyavailable to access at any time Start the year off right by keepingtrack of all your records in one place

You can have a Practitioners account (a term designated to thosewho provide direct care or education such as teachers providersassistant teachers etc) or a Center Directors account You canuse these accounts to enter information related to youremployment history educational achievements trainingsworkshops and conferences you have attended In addition CenterDirector accounts can also have access to additional featuressuch as the ability to view centershyspecific reports These reportsinclude data from the Practitioners who have identified themselvesas employees of that center through the TWR and provide CenterDirectors with a snapshot of the professional development statusand needs of their staff Center Director accounts also contain afeature for submitting job postings to become visible on theTECPDS Job Board allowing any web visitor to see the openingsavailable at their centerfacility

Healthy Living Matters and Texas Early ChildhoodProfessional Development SystemHealthy Living Matters (HLM) and TECPDS have developed andsent out a Call to Action encouraging more trainers to submitproposals in obesity prevention topics Since sending this out lastmonth the TECPDS has received an influx of new proposals inthis area Click here to search the Registry for these great trainingopportunities

Studies recently released by The Brooking Institutions HamiltonProject The Longshyterm Impact of the Head Start Program and theGeorgetown University Center for Research on Children in theUnited States The Effects of Tulsas CAP Head Start Program onMiddle School Academic Outcomes and Progress underscore theeffectiveness of The Head Start Advantage

The Hamilton Project analyzed data from the National LongitudinalSurvey of Youth and found consistent with prior studies thatHead Start improves educational outcomes increasing theprobability that participants graduate from high school attendcollege and receive a postshysecondary degree license orcertification Researchers also found that Head Start improvessocial emotional and behavioral outcomes which becomesevident in adulthood measures of selfshycontrol selfshyesteem andpositive parenting practices Of particular note they also foundthat Head Start participation increased positive parenting practicesfor each ethnic group and for participants whose mothers did nothave a high school degree when compared with the outcomes ofchildren who went to a preschool other than Head Start The Georgetown Study found that children who participated inTulsa CAP Head Start as fourshyyearshyolds in the 2005shy2006academic year showed better outcomes in eighth grade Thesestudents had significantly higher scores on the state math testwere less likely to be chronically absent and were less likely tohave repeated a grade Some of these effects were even strongeramongst certain subgroups of students like students of color andstudents who qualified for free lunch

The CIRCLE CDA Training program builds upon CLIs establishedand wellshyrespected eCIRCLE online professional developmentcourses currently used in Texas School Ready and availablethrough CLI Engage To complement the 80 hours of eCIRCLEcoursework CLI has developed an additional 40 hours of onlinemodules to ensure that all of the content areas for the CDA arecovered providing 100 percent of the training hours needed forteachers to qualify for the CDA CLI has also developed materialsto assist teachers in writing their CDA competency statements acritical component of a CDA The CIRCLE CDA Training programis designed for preschool teachers but will expand to infanttoddlerteachers in the near future

All CIRCLE CDA Training courses and materials will be hosted onCLI Engage and be available for free to all teachers enrolled on theplatform in the September 2016

Studies recently released by The Brooking Institutions HamiltonProject The Longshyterm Impact of the Head Start Program and theGeorgetown University Center for Research on Children in theUnited States The Effects of Tulsas CAP Head Start Program onMiddle School Academic Outcomes and Progress underscore theeffectiveness of The Head Start Advantage

The Hamilton Project analyzed data from the National LongitudinalSurvey of Youth and found consistent with prior studies thatHead Start improves educational outcomes increasing theprobability that participants graduate from high school attendcollege and receive a postshysecondary degree license orcertification Researchers also found that Head Start improvessocial emotional and behavioral outcomes which becomesevident in adulthood measures of selfshycontrol selfshyesteem andpositive parenting practices Of particular note they also foundthat Head Start participation increased positive parenting practicesfor each ethnic group and for participants whose mothers did nothave a high school degree when compared with the outcomes ofchildren who went to a preschool other than Head Start The Georgetown Study found that children who participated inTulsa CAP Head Start as fourshyyearshyolds in the 2005shy2006academic year showed better outcomes in eighth grade Thesestudents had significantly higher scores on the state math testwere less likely to be chronically absent and were less likely tohave repeated a grade Some of these effects were even strongeramongst certain subgroups of students like students of color andstudents who qualified for free lunch

The CIRCLE CDA Training program builds upon CLIs establishedand wellshyrespected eCIRCLE online professional developmentcourses currently used in Texas School Ready and availablethrough CLI Engage To complement the 80 hours of eCIRCLEcoursework CLI has developed an additional 40 hours of onlinemodules to ensure that all of the content areas for the CDA arecovered providing 100 percent of the training hours needed forteachers to qualify for the CDA CLI has also developed materialsto assist teachers in writing their CDA competency statements acritical component of a CDA The CIRCLE CDA Training programis designed for preschool teachers but will expand to infanttoddlerteachers in the near future
