New Photo Directory We will be publishing a new photo directory in the coming weeks! The whole process will be done in house, which means you can have a photo taken of your family following Sunday morning worship (dates & times TBA). We will also have some appointment times available where a member of the congregation who is practicing the art of photography will take your picture in a more formal setting. Finally, you can submit a photo to us (please make sure you have the permission of the photographer).

We cannot just reuse a picture that was taken for the last directory. And, if you don’t have your picture taken or submit a picture, we will search the internet for any available photo to place in that spot. (This may or may not be a joke.) We really want you to participate! As soon as the pictures are in we will print the new directory.

Gathering With Our Neighbors—Family, Food & Fun This year, we’re trying something a little new. We’re opening our church in a fun & family-oriented way to everyone who lives around us once a month, to join those of us that come to church regularly, for family, fellowship, food and fun.

Here’s what that looks like:

We’re sending out an invitation to everyone we can in the surrounding area. We aren’t targeting anyone of a certain income level. Just ANYONE who thinks it might be nice to have dinner and fun activities for their family in a safe and welcoming environment.

Our first event is Friday, September 23 and we will be showing a movie (family friendly) in the park and holding a spaghetti

feed! Food first, then movie, and maybe a few other things like shave ice or popcorn. If you want to bring your creative juices and

contribute ideas, we would love it! We want this to be all inclusive. We want this church to be a beacon to our Bethel community…a place where all feel welcome even if they don’t

show up on Sundays. And what better way to kick it off than in our park that so many enjoy?

We’ll hold an extended Harvest Party with yummy food and kids activities in October (October 21!)

In November, on the 18th, we’ll have a Thanksgiving feast with music by Tommy Parker and hopefully others!

In December, on the 16th, we’ll join together for Christmas treats and caroling.

On January 20th, well…what do you think? Come to Deanna Rivera or Pastor Sarah with your ideas and let’s make this something everyone helps with in some way…through creative thought, an activity, a “kid station”, entertainment, etc.

Tell us what you think would be good but most importantly, come. Gather with your church family and share your heart and warmth with the extended community we serve.

Books of the month: The Newest Oprah Book Club 2016 SelectionFrom prize-winning, bestselling author Colson Whitehead, a magnificent tour de force chronicling a young slave's adventures as she makes a desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South.

Drama, Adventure, and Family Struggles Abound as Three Generations Head West on the Oregon TrailWhen Tabitha Brown's son makes the fateful decision to leave Missouri and strike out for Oregon, she refuses to be left behind. Despite her son's concerns, Tabitha hires her own wagon to join the party. Along

with her reluctant daughter and her ever-hopeful granddaughter, the intrepid Tabitha has her misgivings. But family ties are stronger than fear.

New on the Shelf: Together Through Korea and Alzheimers by Joyce Sorensen, a book featured in the Register Guard of a local couple married for 60 years.

Garden Spells and The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen. Let me know what you think of this author.

Take Me With You by Catherine Hyde, recommended by a friend…the story of a man who leaves on a trip with his son’s ashes only to connect with a family that changes his life.

Grover Cleveland Again! A Treasury of American Presidents by Ken Burns. Incredible book featuring every president from Washington to Obama with photos and summaries. Coffee Table size.

My favorite read in August: Jayber Crow, born in Goforth, Kentucky, orphaned at age ten, began his search as a "pre-ministerial student" at Pigeonville College. There, freedom met with new burdens and a young man needed more than a mirror to find himself. But the beginning of that finding was a short conversation with "Old Grit," his profound professor of New Testament Greek. "You have been given questions to which you cannot be given answers. You will have to live them out—perhaps a little at a time." "And how long is that going to take?""I don't know. As long as you live, perhaps.""That could be a long time.""I will tell you a further mystery," he said. "It may take longer."

Operation Christmas Child In September, we are collecting bubble gum & hard candy.

Little Sprouts Update School begins soon and we’ll be providing many Bethel kids with snack packs to take home each weekend. These kids are at high hunger risk.

WE STILL NEED SPONSORS to help us reach our goal of feeding 125 kids each weekend.

WANT TO DELIVER? We also need someone to deliver the snack packs each Friday to Malabon and Danebo.

Contact Kay Kirkpatrick or Pastor Sarah if you can help!

Preschool Registration Calling all 3-5 year olds! Bethesda’s preschool program is open for new registrations.

Christmas Giving Tree December is around the corner, which means that the giving tree will be up before you know it! Here are some things to consider as we approach the holidays:

• There will be at least 19 families in need that we support from the Bethel area and each will receive a food box, presents for children, and household goods like detergent. If you come across any pantry or household items or “most kids love” type toys, books, or art supplies at incredible prices, please consider purchasing and donating them. There are some “extreme couponers” out there, I know it!

• If you know of a business that would sponsor or provide extreme discounts of food, clothing, toys, or household goods, please let Deanna know.

• If you can save boxes & bags for gifts as well as anything that would be good for the large food boxes we put together, please save or bring to church for storage.

• Of course, we'll still have our giving tree but a head start never hurt!

• Wrapping supplies are always appreciated.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Deanna Rivera.

Burrito Brigade Burrito Brigade will be using our Kitchen on Saturdays from 9-2 beginning September 24.

Their mission is to feed the hungry of Oregon through a community network of donations while engaging our community in the fight to end hunger. The kitchen will still be available to Bethesda members on Saturdays, Burrito Brigade will be flexible with our needs for using the space.

They are always looking for volunteer help! On Saturdays they prepare pita pockets that are distributed in our community.

The newly remodeled and renamed Bethel Boutique (previously the Clothes Closet) is open! We’re aiming for an improved experience for our “shoppers” and volunteers. We’re hoping for more and more fashionable clothing and more and more volunteers to assist our shoppers and organize the donated apparel. A sign-up sheet is available on the “Connect” wall in the entryway if you’d like to volunteer, or contact Diana Renn to be added to her volunteer list to get updated requests when she has them for sorting, helping kids shop, etc. You’ll love the new experience we’re providing for the kids that come through! This is a great ministry!

Hours of operation

• First Saturday: 9:00 a.m. - Noon

• 2nd and 4th Tuesday: 1:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.

• 3rd Wednesday: 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

• We’re open the end of August through mid-June.

How to Donate Clothes We love receiving new clothing! Keep the Bethel Boutique in mind if you come across a great deal at a local store. If you have been wondering how you go about donating to the clothes closet, please follow these three steps to make our volunteers’ jobs as easy as possible:

1. All donations must be in good condition and freshly washed. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself “Is my donation something that a child or teen would wear to school?” The Clothes Closet serves children from kindergarten through high school. If possible, donate only "in-season" clothing due to our storage limitations.

-No torn, stained clothing or broken zippers-No used undergarments (underwear, bras, etc.-No bathing suits-We are no longer accepting used shoes

2. Package items in small to medium sized trash bags so our volunteers can easily lift them. Close bags to avoid spilling.

3. Place donations downstairs in the bin outside of the Clothes Closet. We are located in the church's lower-level. The church is open weekdays from 9 am - 3 pm and Sunday morning the doors are always open!

We Are The Lord’s “The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it; for he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers.”—Psalm 24:1-2

As summer is drawing to a close, I hope that you have had some time to enjoy God’s beautiful creation. God has made amazing things: lakes, mountains, valleys, rivers, trees, hills, rocks, lava fields, glaciers and so much more. This is the stuff of creation but there is also all of us, the created. Maybe you have seen fish, deer, elk, bugs of all sorts, birds of all sorts and many of the amazing created things. I hope that you have also had a chance to reconnect with people. Family and friends, new people in your life who have brought joy, and lots of strangers who seem a little less strange after a short while.

Now I know that summer may have also brought death of a loved one, a new diagnosis, treatments (and lots of them), broken relationships, and strangers who may have seemed stranger after a short while. We also continue to see glaciers shrink and forests burn and we can wonder what is truly going on. There’s also an election forthcoming which seems to fit better in this paragraph than the one before.

Psalm 24’s opening verses are a great reminder in the midst of the high’s and low’s that we may be feeling. The earth is the Lord’s; we are the Lord’s. In the midst of uncertainty these words bring hope and

comfort. This isn’t my mess to fix but instead I get to partner with all of you so that we can work together in the stewardship of all that God has given us.

We have one treasure that many covet the most and that is time. We love the summer because the days are longer and we feel like there is more time to enjoy this creation and one another. The days are getting shorter and in a few short months we will feel like there isn’t enough time to enjoy the light of day.

One thing I have seen as a pastor over the last 15 years is that when summer hits, time is often spent in other places away from the church. It’s renewal time to soak in the sun and take vacations and enjoy as much time as possible. As the fall comes, our time gets reallocated. Kids are in school maybe playing a sport. There are practices, meals, and homework to juggle. But I have also noticed that the fall is a season when church gets reallocated some time for Sunday School and Worship, for Bible Study and so many other things. I think there can even be a little excitement around this time of year.

However you have spent your time this summer know this, God has been with you in this time. In creation and Dr.’s Offices, lakes and hospitals, all of these places are held securely in God’s hands. As you are looking at your schedule for the fall, allocate some time to connect to the creator in worship with your brothers and sisters in Christ. Your time and God’s time will meet and maybe for a few moments all of the other stuff won’t matter as much.

God’s Peace, Pastor Steve

A NEW EXPERIMENT As you bring your children to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities:

• to live with them among God's faithful people,

• bring them to the word of God and the holy supper,

• teach them the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments,

• place in their hands the holy scriptures,

• and nurture them in faith and prayer,

• so that your children may learn to trust God,

• proclaim Christ through word and deed,

• care for others and the world God made,

• and work for justice and peace.

I don’t always make the right choices; in fact, often I’m pretty sure I often choose exactly the opposite of what I’m supposed to be doing. And, these last six months have been no different. We were so tired of hearing from our children (they’re 9, 12, and 15) that church was boring, that it wasn’t any fun, that they didn’t connect with anyone, that it was the last place they wanted to be…so, we decided not to push the issue. If they wanted to come, they could. If they didn’t want to, we didn’t force them. And for awhile, it felt like the right decision. Our mornings were much easier; our evenings a bit freer, their attitudes a bit more compliant. But, then while baptizing a baby recently, and while asking her parents if they promised to raise her in the ways of Jesus, I realized I was doing exactly the opposite of what I believed. I had promised to raise my babies in a community of faith, that in turn promised to help me raise my babies. And, I wasn’t giving the community the chance to help me; and wasn’t exposing these now (pre)teens the possibility of letting Jesus meet them in worship…all because it was too hard and we were too busy and I didn’t want the hassles.

So…I’m trying an experiment until the end of the year. My children will be in worship; they will be in Sunday School; they will go to Waterworks and Confirmation and High School Youth Group. They won’t necessarily like it; they’ll probably still say it’s boring and we’re awful parents. It will make our evenings busier and our mornings more stressful. But, I only have a few more years with them and I want so badly for them to know there is a God who loves them unconditionally; I want so badly for them to experience an accepting and forgiving worshipping community; I want so badly for them to meet Jesus…and I believe with my whole heart, the faithful gathered people of God is one of the best places to help me fulfill the promises made all those years ago.

Wish me luck…or, better yet, join my experiment. Together, we just might raise up a generation who believes with their whole heart that Jesus is for them, too.

Taking a new road on this crazy life journey,

Sarah

Bethesda Lutheran Church

Leave A Legacy Have you thought of including Bethesda in your will or living trust? Would you like to leave a lasting legacy to the church? Such bequests strengthen the ministry both now and into the future.

It can be as simple as including in your will:

“I leave ____% to Bethesda Lutheran Church, an Oregon non-profit corporation, 4445 Royal Avenue, Eugene, Oregon, 97401.”

Feel free to contact Pastor Steve, or Lois Toftemark about the Bethesda Foundation, or Dave Bullard about the Bethesda Mission Endowment Fund.
