A CHANGE OF PERSPECTIVE
After my last article – “Why we love our community?” – many of the readers thanked me for refuting a report floating on Facebook that we are one of the worst places to live in North Carolina. I explained that such town rankings do not factor “population dynamics, high crime areas, and latest annual crime reports” in their raw data analyses. Some of the read-ers asked me to clarify further, so here goes--
Neither the SBI nor the FBI ranks geographical areas (town, city, county) based on crime reports. In fact, the FBI webpage for Uniform Crime Reporting cautions that such "incomplete analyses have often created misleading perceptions which adversely affect geographical entities and their residents." It also warns against using the report to evaluate the effectiveness of any law agency. There are numerous factors – clearance rates, part II offenses, arrest rates, etc. – which are not included in the report that should be taken into account.
So who comes up with these rankings? A quick search on Google reveals that it is online marketing sites promising to give objective analysis of places, products, and services. Here you will find articles such as, “Best Places to Live,” “Ten Cheapest Cities,” and “Most Dan-gerous Towns.” Their analysis is anything but objective. One actually declares, “We try to paint a picture of what’s happening in a region based on ‘Friday Night Science’ – how’d you argue at a bar.” And where do they get their information? From the latest FBI crime reports! By statistical gymnastics they create an "aggregated crime score,” weighting the violent crimes at 90% and property crimes at 10%, even though the property crimes are far more prevalent. Factors such as high crime zones, relationship of the assailant to the victim, and motive for the crime are never considered.
Recently, one such site ranked Elon as 1st among the top 100 safest cities in North Carolina while Henderson trailed in at 98. I’ve visited Elon and it’s a wonderful place but before you rent a U-Haul, here’s what a similar site reported: When Elon is compared to Henderson – Household income in Elon is 61% less than it is in Henderson and 67% below National Av-erage; Elon had 39.6% fewer High School graduates than Henderson; Elon spends 10.4% less per student than Henderson. Furthermore, Elon is 33% more densely populated and 9.7% more expensive than Henderson. How about crime? Of course, by their pseudo-math, we appear to be a war zone! Bottom line: All such ranking is faulty and haphazard at best. Even the most ideal places have their share of problems. According to the SBI Crime Index, a safe community like Cary saw a 9% rise in overall crime in recent years.
I am by no means trying to gloss over our problems. All I am suggesting is that we are not as unredeemable as we are made out to be. What we need is a change in perspective. Instead of looking back with nostalgia or looking around with condemnation, we need to look inward with soul searching. What have we done to improve our community? Are we being the Salt and Light in our world? Ultimately, it’s not the courthouse or the jailhouse but the church house that has the an-swer. By the way, here’s one ranking that caught my eye – “People living in Henderson are 6.88% more likely to have a religious affiliation than people living in Elon.”

Alice Harris I serve on the Board of Directors for Crime Stoppers which is where I met Pastor Shah. This led me to visit
Clearview Church and I have felt at home here since that 1st visit earlier this summer when Donna Bower warmly greeted me and I felt so welcomed. I offi-cially joined as a member on July 25th at the Saturday Night Service where I serve as a greeter.
I have 3 adult children; a son who lives in my home, a daughter in Bunn and a son in Charlotte. I like to bowl and read (especially mysteries) and I love to fish. I enjoy traveling, as long as I am not the one doing the driving!
I look forward to seeing what ministry I might fit into at Clearview.
New MeN’s BiBle study
Wednesdays at 6 pm - Begins 9/9
Coordinated by Pastor Shah
When it comes to marriage, when you hear the word intimacy what’s the first thing that comes to your mind? Sex, right? But what if I told you that there are more types of intimacy than just sex in mar-riage? I know the women are intrigued and hopefully the men are as well. The definition of intimacy in the dictionary is “close famili-arity or friendship; closeness; an intimate act, especially sexual
intercourse.”
Let’s talk about the first definition. There are 6 forms of intimacy in marriage that don’t occur between the sheets. These forms of intimacy fall into the “close familiarity or friendship or closeness” part of the definition. In my last article I talked about a podcast that I have been listening to lately “One Extraordinary Marriage.” In an article I read by Tony and Alisa DiLorenzo, they talked about these forms of intimacy. I found the article intriguing and insightful. I think we as married couples do experience all or some of these forms of intimacy, but we don’t think of them as
intimacy. Maybe it’s time we do!
1. Emotional Intimacy. I think this is the kind of intimacy that women enjoy most. This kind of intimacy is achieved through of thoughts, feelings, and also our dreams. What many women don’t know is that this kind of intimacy with men is achieved many times through sex. When your husband is close to you
physically, he opens up emotionally.
2. Intellectual intimacy. This is the “mutual understanding about important areas or issues in your marriage.” This includes setting goals, setting budgets, and raising children to name a few. This kind of intimacy requires your marriage to be “a safe place for
discussion.”
3. Spiritual intimacy. I believe this is the most important type of intimacy in your marriage. If you and your spouse do not share the same spiritual values, this can become the point of major contention in your marriage. For example, how the children will be raised. Even though Abidan and I come from different cultural backgrounds, because of our similar spiritual upbringing; we are
one in this type of intimacy.
4. Recreational intimacy. Do things together! Not just as a family, but as a couple. Husbands, try something your wife likes to do; and wives, try something your husband likes to do. You might find that you enjoy whatever it is that they choose. If not, you can
enjoy just being with your spouse.
5. Financial intimacy. This form of intimacy can start with elimi-nating your debt. When you and your spouse can discuss your finances openly and honestly, you create this form of intimacy in
your marriage.
6. Physical intimacy. Holding hands, kissing, snuggling, and, of course, sex is all a part of physical intimacy. You just feel closer
to your spouse when you are touching.
Take stock of your marriage and see where you stand in regards to these six forms of intimacy. You might just put the spark back in your marriage! -

YOUTH CORNER
We’ve been walking through the book of Acts in Sunday School, along with the rest of the
church. It has been an incredible, challenging journey seeing how the church was estab-
lished and how Paul carried the gospel to the lost. One of the highlights for me was talking
with Illuminate about how God used Paul’s abilities and natural talents to further the King-
dom. Paul was a gifted speaker; God gave him opportunities to address crowds on numer-
ous occasions. Paul used to be a respected Pharisee; he had a unique platform to speak to
Jewish audiences. God gifted Paul, refined those gifts through experience, then used them
for the sake of the gospel.
How has God gifted you? How has He gifted your students? Being a teenager is all about
figuring out who you are and what you like/want to do. Encourage your students to explore
their passions and find out how God has gifted them. Praise their accomplishments and
encourage them through failure. Let them learn what makes them tick and then show
them how to use it for God’s glory. Teach them to seek to glorify God in whatever they do
and to use their natural talents and abilities for His Kingdom. —Ryan
