Agape Harvest
September 2012
Dear Friends,
S u z ann e B l o ch , an
immigrant from Germany,
often played chamber music
with Albert Einstein and
other prominent scientists.
She said that Einstein,
though an accomplished
violinist, irritated his fellow
musicians by not coming up
on the beat. "You see,"
Bloch explained, "he
couldn't count." Einstein
could project revolutionary
theories about the cosmos,
but he had difficulty with
rhythmic counting. Despite
his limitation, he remained
an enthusiastic musician.
Sometimes we lament our
limitations. Maybe we wish
we could sing more
beautifully for God or give
more to God's work. At
times we all wish we could
get around better and do
more things to help
ourselves and others. The
truth is that like Einstein,
we all have gifts and abilities
and we all have our
limitations. But no matter
who we are and what our
assets or liabilities, we all
have talents given by God
to share. Each one of those
gifts is essential to the
building of the Body of
Christ, the Church, and its
health and growth.
Sometimes our gifts are
obvious and sometimes they
need to be developed, as the
old saying goes, practice
makes perfect. Like the little
boy who received some
money to give to God's
work but didn't want to
share, we sometimes need
to learn to share. Sometimes
we need to work on sharing
our faith as well. Our
accounts of God's work in
our lives can be a
tremendous blessing to
others.
When we realize that all of
us have limitations, we can
move forward by seeking
God's guidance in using our
gifts. We can pray. We can
show kindness to others.
We can visit the lonely and
the sick. We can share the
gifts God has given us. St.
Paul said, "Having then
gifts according to the
grace that is given to us,
let us use them" (Romans
12:6).
With love,
Pastor Carol

A letter from a friend…
True Success I want us to think about success for a
moment…..
What is success? Do you desire to be
successful? Is success all it’s “billed”
to be? Webster’s dictionary defines
success as…the attaining of a desired
end…as well as…the attaining of
wealth, favor or eminence. If you
have experienced it, I think you
would agree that success is great!
Success is fun! Because when we
succeed we prosper, we thrive, we
flourish! On the flip side however,
failure is awful! Again if you have
experienced it I think you will agree
when we fail all we want to do is
crawl into a deep, dark hole until the
shame subsides. Most of us,
unfortunately, have not been taught
there are two types if success, worldly
and authentic. But in order to live
peaceful and contented lives, we need
to know the difference between these
two types of success. Most certainly
there is absolutely nothing wrong
with the pursuit of worldly success
and financial independence. We all
journey in this pursuit to one degree
or another. But true success is
different because true success calls us
to live by The Light…not by the glare
of popping flash bulbs!
For me, the huge appeal of true
success is the fact that it is different
for each of us. That is to say there is
no ‘one size fits all’ because we come
in all sizes. Consider this, true
success is having time to nurture ones
soul.
True success is never having to tell
one’s self or those we love…“maybe
next week”.
True success is knowing that if today
was your last day on earth, you could
leave with no regret.
True success is knowing that you’ve
done the best you could do no matter
what the outcome.
True success is knowing in your soul,
that the best you can do is ALL you
can do, thus it is always enough.
True success is making a positive
difference in other people’s lives and
believing that if you can do that for
just one person a day through a smile,
a listening ear, a caring word or a
helping hand you have blessed them.
True success is feeling good about
ourselves, appreciating where we’ve
been, honoring the journey we have
already made.
True success is being so grateful for
the abundance we have that there is
no greater desire than to share it with
others.
Ultimately, true success is living each
day with an overflowing heart!
Now, what do you think about
success? Thanks be to God for the
True Success of living in The Light
rather than the glare of popping
flashbulbs.
May the Peace of Christ go with you.

GIVE A MEAL A MONTH
In July, another initiative was started to support those in need in our community with the Give A Meal A
Month program. Each month, reusable yellow plastic bags are distributed with a list of items needed for
that month. Community members are asked to donate some or all of the items on the list—as they are
able—to the Pine Plains Food Locker. The Give A Meal A Month items for September are cereal, tea
bags, Jell-o,/pudding and crackers.
This program is in addition to the Pine Plains Food Locker Monthly Drive which targets donations of a
single item per month. The monthly drive item for September is Laundry Detergent.
Donations can be left at the church, or sent to the Pine Plains Food Locker, P O Box 587, Pine Plains,

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2012—August 13—17, 2012
This year we hosted a spiritually fulfilling Vacation Bible School (VBS) with inspiring lessons on the theme “Everything Is
Possible With God”, and of course, inspiring revelations from the children who participated. 52 children registered for VBS
and we had an average attendance of 40-42 daily. They were treated to skits which did a tremendous job in bringing the
bible stories to life and in making the bible points and memory verses relevant to the present day challenges of young lives.
Crafts were spear-headed by John and Carol Hart with assistance from Bob and Lynne Clinch, and included flying saucers,
kites, hot air ballons, birds and the highlight - photos in an airplane constructed by John Hart and Bob Clinch. Lynne Clinch
coordinated the food. Arlette Williams, Erin Blackmar, Brendan Kilpatrick and Jim Jackson were teachers from our church
and Kenly Vater-Ciampaglione and Ariel Wapnick were assistant teachers from our congregation. Ruth Smith coordinated
registration and was our official baby sitter. Kathy Bartles coordinated the breakfast bag project. Ruth Cohn and her daughter
E.C led music and fun and games were a big hit with Jackie Reynolds/Bee Bee the Clown. The four churches took turns in
providing daily snacks and an anonymous angel generously donated the pizzas for the pizza party on the last day.
This year we participated in two projects: an international project to raise funds to purchase mosquito nets to protect
children from Malaria in Mali and a local project to collect food items for breakfast bags for the Homeless Shelter in
Poughkeepsie. $500 was collected to purchase 88 mosquito nets and we exceeded our goal for breakfast bag items. God’s
blessings were abundant and overflowing! Special thanks to the many, many volunteers who willingly gave of their time,
resources and hearts to make VBS 2012 unforgettable.

Just some common sense
As summer comes to an end so do our gardens. As always,
we have mixed reviews as to whether it was a good growing
season or not. We were satisfied with our square foot
endeavor. We don't grow to can or freeze but to enjoy fresh
veggies. That being said, there are always a few tomatoes or
basil left. I dry these in the oven and store in dry cool place
for use during the winter. I don't have a dehydrator
otherwise, I'd use that. Maybe Santa is listening! My method
has been working for years so there is no reason to change. I
just turn on the oven to the lowest setting and place sliced
tomatoes on a cookie sheet. Check every hour or so and
when dry remove from the oven to cool thoroughly, jar and
store. The basil is easier but done the same way.
School is starting! The challenge of packing a school lunch is
at hand. What will they eat, enjoy, be good for them and be
the envy of all their lunch partners? Oh yes, there is definitely
that! No one wants to have 'that' lunch. What to do....All
magazines offer their opinions. All their pictures look
wonderful, their recipes easy enough, BUT will it be eaten by
my picky child? TV Chefs offer their thoughts as well but I
think common sense should rule.
Ask you child what they would want as a ‘special something’
in their lunch. We generally give a sandwich, piece of fruit or
fresh veggies and a sweet. Change up the routine sandwich
and make a wrap. Another idea is to make a wrap rolling it
tight and cut as if it’s sushi. Put cut side up in small plastic
container and you have an instant conversation at the lunch
table. This can be made with julienne veggies or the
traditional cold cuts. Other ideas, make a yogurt dip to serve
with veggies, or make your own trail mix or granola. Nothing
wrong with a sweet. The trick is moderation.
Although summer may be coming to an end there is still time
for outdoor grilling. Let me give you a recipe that works well
either on the grill or the oven. The French call it en
Papillote. We just say in parchment. Now common sense
will tell you to use heavy duty foil and not parchment if
grilling. Yet, foil maybe used in the oven too for this dish. I
like salmon so this is a treat for me. Any fleshy fish (cod,
haddock, swordfish) will do as well as any variety of veggies
so change it up. Prep time as well as cooking time are the
same. And it is absolutely delish!
Asian Ginger Salmon en Papillote
In small bowl combine and set aside:
1 tsp. peeled minced fresh ginger
3 Tbs. Soy sauce
1 Tbs. orange juice
2 tsp. rice vinegar (or any vinegar will do but reduce to 1
tsp.)
2 tsp. sesame oil (olive oil can be substituted)
1 tsp. honey
Julienne your veggies--- any variety of those listed
below:
1 carrot, pepper (red or green) zucchini, squash,
eggplant
Thinly sliced cabbage (½ cup per package) or baby bok
choy
small sliced onion or sliced scallion
bean sprouts if desired
Take 4 pieces parchment paper, 16x12 and fold in half
and place on cookie sheet. Open each and divide the
veggies in each package. Season the veggies with your
marinade mixture, about 1 tablespoon. Place salmon on
top of the veggies, pepper each and add another splash
of marinade. Don’t add anymore salt. Fold the top half
of the parchment over and start small overlapping folds
alone the outside edge to seal. Fold last end under
package. Brush each package with oil and place in 425
degree oven for 10 minutes. The paper packets will be
puffed up. Remove from oven. Place on plate. Cut into
the packet at the table. Watch the steam so you don‘t
burn yourself. Add a starch and salad and you have a
meal that’s restaurant quality.
If you don’t like the Asian influence then skip the
marinade altogether. Salt and pepper the veggies and
fish in packets. Place sliced lemon in each and add
about 1-2 Tbs. Chicken broth and fold packages. Cook
per instructions.
