FROM THE PRESIDENT

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your president this

year. While our congregational year officially started on July 1, most of you will likely start participating at Tree of Life this month with the beginning of Religious School and Rosh Hashanah both occurring in September.

Meanwhile, the Board of Directors and Temple committees have been busy planning for the most meaningful experiences possible for all congregants. The volunteer choir has been practicing; the volunteer committees have been making preparations for High Holy Days. Each member of the board and each member of a committee is a volunteer. Plus we have volunteers in the office and during Religious School. We need many more to volunteer. You can volunteer for an event or for a standing committee – but we need you

more than you can imagine. We have a tiny, but extraordinarily hard-working paid congregational team of five people – the rabbi, religious school director, office manager, custodian and music director. That’s it. They cannot be expected to do everything. To get the most out of our Temple, we must all dive in and participate in the planning and the execution of the many events and activities during the year.

You have such immeasurable talents and skills of which I have no knowledge, and I know many are willing to volunteer for the Temple when I look at the success of the Big Nosh. Another example some years ago was when the new state-of-the-art organ and enormous speakers were installed; it required rows of seats to be temporarily removed, wiring to be strung over the ceiling, speakers to be installed in the walls and more – all of which was done with volunteers from Tree of Life.

With approximately 300 family units, we should easily be able to have fully functioning committees and an abundance of people willing to participate in many other projects. Unfortunately, we do not. Perhaps you have not been asked and are waiting for an invitation.

Well, this is the invitation! Just some of the opportunities are with membership, Religious School, ritual, choir member, fundraising events, the building and grounds, special events of many kinds, Mitzvot, adult education, social action and outreach. We have a form to indicate your interests that we may send out and ask you to return. But please do not wait for that. Call the office and let us know of your interests at 787-2182. Linda Frederico will be happy to hear from you, or leave a message.

Also, I am available to talk about your volunteering or to discuss any Temple-related concerns. My email is [email protected]; my office is 799-9311, home 788-6340 and mobile 331-4287. With your help and enthusiasm, we will have a great year! Steve Savitz

WANTED: VOLUNTEERS - WE NEED YOU! By Steve Savitz

Page 3: SEPTEMBER 2011 / ELLUL, 5771 - TISHREI, 5772s3.amazonaws.com/images.shulcloud.com/981/uploads...The power of these holy days comes from the beauty and intensity of the liturgy and

There is a story of an angry newspaper reader who stormed into a newspaper office waving the day’s

paper, asking to see the editor of the obituary column. The man showed the editor his name in the obituary listing. “You see,” he said, “I am very much alive. I demand a retraction!” The editor replied: “I never retract a story, but I’ll tell you what I will do. I’ll print your name in the birth column and give you a fresh start.” The approaching High Holy Days are our opportunity for fresh starts, for breaking free of hurtful habits, for beginning anew. Judaism teaches that if we are willing to do the hard work of TESHUVAH (repentance) that is required of us at this time of year, we are deserving of the chance to begin again. What an amazing message! At no other time of the year do we feel such a sense of optimism and hope. At no other time of the year do we believe so strongly in the possibility of real change for ourselves and for our world. The power of these holy days comes from the beauty and intensity of the liturgy and from the sincerity of the promises that we make to ourselves and to God. It also comes from being in the presence of one another. When we come together as a congregation, as a community, during the Days of Awe, we are reminded that we do not have to face the coming year alone. During times of celebration, of challenge, and of sorrow, we have each other – and that knowledge should bring us both courage and hope. May the coming year bring us blessings of good health and of joy. And may we do our part to bring blessings of tikkun (repair) to our souls, to our relationships, and to our world.

SEPTEMBER NOTES I am very much looking forward to the beginning of Religious School this month. It seems like it has been too long since we last had all of our children together at Temple. I want to thank Risa Strauss for all of her hard work in preparing for the school year. I also want to thank all of our teachers and the many volunteers who have put in long hours over the summer to help get this year off to a wonderful start. I know it will be a year of great learning and growth for all of our students.

Please plan on attending our community interfaith service in honor of the 10th anniversary of 9/11. I am honored to participate in this special service, which will take place at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Please see page 12 for more details.

I am very excited about this year’s Solomon-Tenenbaum Lecture at USC on Tuesday, September 13. I have been a fan of Dr. Visotzky’s writings for quite some time, but I have never had the opportunity to hear or meet him in person. He is a wonderful scholar with an interesting topic – I hope you will mark your calendars and plan on attending.

I am also excited about our first ever “Pink Shabbat” for Breast Cancer Awareness on Friday, September 16. I think it is a wonderful idea. I want to thank Lisa Helfer (and wish her a Mazal Tov) for bringing “Pink Shabbat” to TOL and Sisterhood for their support. I think it will be a very meaningful Shabbat for all those who are breast cancer survivors and for those who have lost a loved one to breast cancer.

As you can see, the September calendar is very full – and all of this comes right before the beginning of the High Holy Days. Please remember to take time to prepare for the Days of Awe. The more we put into our Holy Days, the more we will get out of them. A great way to begin one’s final preparations before the start of the New Year is to attend our Selichot Service on the Saturday evening before Rosh HaShanah. This year the service and discussion will take place at Beth Shalom Synagogue on September 24. It is wonderful that our two congregations come together on this special night – I hope to see you there.

L’SHANAH TOVAH TIKATEIVU – May we all be inscribed for a good New Year!

A FRESH START By Rabbi Daniel M. Sherman

Please join me in congratulating our beloved Religious School Director, Risa Strauss, who has been awarded the Grinspoon-Steinhardt Award for Excellence in Jewish Education. I want to thank the Columbia Jewish Federation for bringing this award to our community. Risa will be honored at the CJF Campaign Kickoff Event on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at the JCC. Please plan on participating in this important evening. More information is on page 5.

Although

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur

are supposed to signify a “new beginning” of sorts, inevitably, my brain flutters back to memories I have of the New Year holiday in years past. I don’t suspect that age has much to do with my propensity for remembering things from long ago. I truly feel, though, that the depth of my memories is more of a function of the richness of the content as opposed to having a post-it note for a brain. In this case, the High Holydays are so full of sights, sounds, smells, tastes and different sensations that it’s practically impossible not to get a few “good memories” out of these holiest of days.

Hurrying to shul, clutching onto my father’s hand, I can still feel the crispness of the autumn air on my nose as I struggled to keep up with his quick pace. I remember trying to find our seats amidst all the adults in their dark suits, big hats and yarmulkes. And then I remember not being able to see the rabbi and the cantor in their robes because I was too short (this obviously is a recurring memory). I will always feel lipstick smacks and wet kisses reverberating in my ears and on my cheeks, combined with the murmur of “gut yontif,” Yiddish for “Happy Holiday.” Most of all I remember the sound of the shofar blast at the very end of Yom Kippur, not so much because it was loud, but because I knew when we got home we would eat bagels and lox, kugel, and cheesecake.

These are my Jewish memories. I have them from every decade, every state, every country and every community in which I have lived and worked. They come naturally to me. I would probably need some intense acupuncture just to erase them.

I know that I am not alone in having these Jewish memories be such an integral part of my existence. I have been privileged to watch and learn from Jews by Choice as well as those raising their children Jewish in our community as they work with such commitment, enthusiasm and diligence to create their own memories and connections to Jewish holidays and rituals. Laws and traditions

that I have been exposed to from birth, Jews by Choice and their families come at with a new and fresh perspective – an innocence of sorts.

For instance, in some Jewish communities it is a tradition to wear white, for purity, on Yom Kippur. So as the story goes, a young man who had recently converted did just that, because that was what he learned in his Judaism 101 class. Imagine his surprise upon walking into the sanctuary and seeing only two other people dressed all in white: the rabbi and the cantor. I actually believe that that young man was on to something. Yom Kippur is a time of holiness, Godliness and goodness. Wearing white as a congregation on Yom Kippur would be incredibly and overwhelmingly meaningful and would make a powerful statement, especially since we as Jews do not approach God alone on this day, but as a group.

On Yom Kippur the emphasis is on our Jewish responsibility for each other. When we sing, “We are Your people…we are Your flock” it helps cement the idea that, even at this time of confession and trial, we should stick together as a people giving support and encouragement to each other. Rabbi Lawrence Kushner has written that we all need one another to complete who we are. I can’t agree more.

The Jewish way of life has always been varied and a blend of many cultures. I am in awe of those Jews by Choice and those families who have taken an ancient spirituality that is so close to my heart and have awakened it by mixing it with their experiences to create new Jewish traditions, for their homes and sanctuaries, as well as for mine. In recent years more and more people have become Jewish and adopted a Jewish way of life. Some people have married into Judaism and are raising their children as Jews, and others have become Jewish through conversion. These households make incredible contributions to the Jewish community and are invaluable to our religious and cultural growth.

I look forward to sharing the High Holydays with everyone at Tree of Life Congregation. I also look forward to catching perhaps a glimpse of new “takes” on some of our oldest and most cherished traditions and customs.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS

You can feel “it” in the air as autumn approaches and the summer season dwindles down to those last few precious days before the start of a new academic year – and the beginning of football. Judicially, our thoughts turn to the High Holy Days, sweet beginnings, and if you’re involved in Jewish education, the start of Religious School as well.

Tree of Life has been gearing up for the start of the school year with a wide variety of programming to serve our families and our Religious School staff. We have already had a number of teacher planning meetings and enjoyed a scrumptious “New Member Ice Cream Social” at the end of August. Our “Fall Back into Religious School Open House” will be held the Wednesday after Labor Day, and our special Back-to-School Shabbat will be on Friday, Sept. 9. Our first day of Religious School is Sunday, Sept. 11. We will have an all-school assembly at 9 a.m. and our annual Parents’ Bagel Breakfast will be held in the social hall.

As a Religious School staff, we welcome back with open arms all of our returning students and families, and we give a warm hug and say, “Shalom,” to new faces that have recently joined the Columbia-area Jewish community.

A huge Todah Rabah, to all who helped so graciously with Temple programming during the summer months. To Jennifer Friedman and Nora Budman, our TYG advisors – thank you. To Rick Mendel, Joan Tucker, Joan Amado, Mary Helen Baum, Eleanor Stein, Linda Rodgers, Elena Carr, Stephanie Carr, Hannah Amado, Spencer Amado, Elliott Chartock, Sarah Brotman – you kept the Seeds of Hope Farmers Market going this summer; thank you. To our “Summer Play and Learn” staff, Kelsey Marom, Cheryl Glantz Nail, and Elena Carr – thank you. We couldn’t have done it without your hours of dedication. And to Kim Moses and the TOL Religious School Board, thank you for helping to ready the school for another year of learning and growing.

As we enter into the month of Elul, the 30 days preceding Rosh Hashanah, we are challenged as Jews to think about our past, our present and our future – as individuals, as members of a family, and as part of a greater community. What better way to engage this challenge than by enrolling your child in Religious School? It is the link that connects generation to generation. If you are still in need of a Religious School registration packet, please do not hesitate to call the office.

Shanah Tovah U’metukah – Have a Happy and Sweet New Year.

JOIN US FOR A “PINK SHABBATSM” ON SEPTEMBER 16TH

What is a Pink Shabbat? Congregations all over the U.S. have celebrated “Pink Shabbat” as a way to bring awareness to the issue of breast cancer and how it affects Jewish women in particular. The organization Sharsharet (meaning “link”) came up with the idea for Pink Shabbat. Sharsharet is a national not-for-profit organization of cancer survivors dedicated to addressing the unique challenges of young Jewish women living with breast cancer. We have several Tree of Life members who have had breast cancer. This year, TOL’s Second Vice President and Young Survival Coalition (YSC) Columbia Volunteer Lisa Helfer will be the featured survivor for Palmetto Health's Walk for Life, to be held on October 1 at Finlay Park. Each year a breast cancer survivor is honored at the walk and Lisa—who celebrated her 10- year cancerversary this year—was chosen for this year's event. We salute Lisa for her dedication and support building YSC Columbia, and for bringing “Pink Shabbat” to Tree of Life. Mazal Tov, Lisa!

These are many ways that you can be involved:

• Come to our special service on September 16th. Wear pink if you like, and enjoy a pink Oneg Shabbat, as we learn together about what we can do as individuals and a community to battle breast cancer.

• Let us know if you are a survivor and would like to be included in the Pink ShabbatSM program. • Send to the TOL office the name of a loved one who passed away from breast cancer, so we may honor their

memory during the service. • Participate in the Walk for Life! Email Lisa if you would like to join her team – [email protected] – or walk

with other friends, family or co-workers. • Learn more about Sharsheret and consider making a donation to this worthwhile cause at www.Sharsheret.org.

We would like to thank the following individuals who have already joined the Brotherhood for 2011/2012: Jonathan Artz, John Baker, Robert Blenner, Barry Bornstein, David Carr, Richard Cohen, Jerry Emanuel, Emmanuel Farber, Eric Feuerstein, Bernard Fleischman, Carl Freedman, Ron Garber, Alan Geers, Jack Ginsberg, David Greenhouse, Steven Grosby, Richard Helman, Ed Hertz, Alan Jolles, Fred Medway, Stephen Merlin, Donald Portnoy, Marc Rapport, David Reddy, Jerry Rothstein, Sidney Sasiene, Rob Scully, Brad Smith, Ned Strauss, Todd Weiss, and Shawn Youngstedt. SPEAKER AND BREAKFAST The Brotherhood is sponsoring a breakfast and speaker in the Tree of Life social hall on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 9:30 a.m. The event is expected to last until approximately 11 a.m. There is no cost for this event, but donations are welcome. Please visit the TOL website, www.tolsc.org for more details on the speaker and to register. By registering you will help us ensure we have sufficient food for everyone attending. MARK YOUR CALENDAR The Brotherhood will be providing lunches for the Religious School on the following Sundays: Oct. 16, Dec. 4, Jan. 29, and March 11. We will also be doing a pancake breakfast on Nov. 20. Watch for reminder e-mails, and don’t forget to sign up on our website. PLAY AUDITIONS Tree of Life is proud to present, “Theophilus North," a play based on the novel by Thornton Wilder and performed by MBFProductions. Auditions will be held on Sept. 6, 7, and 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Temple. You may call Michael Bailey at 803-834-1775 or e-mail him at [email protected] to set up an appointment for an audition. If you have a resume and photo, please bring them to the audition. THE LATKE HUT The Latke Hut pad has been poured, and the Brotherhood continues with plans for the beginning of construction of the “Hut.” You can help the self-proclaimed “Latke Kings of Columbia” have a safe place to cook our latkes by making a donation to the Latke Hut. For as little as $18 you can buy a board for the hut and make our dream a reality, while at the same time improving the Temple. We need $1,700 to complete the project, and we have raised $950 to this point. Donations may be made by check payable to Tree of Life (write “Latke Hut” in the memo line) or online by visiting our Donation page on the Temple website.

We are reminded that “on Rosh HaShanah it is written, and on Yom Kippur it is sealed.” Thus we pray that we will be sealed in the Book of Life for a good new year. 10:00 – 10:40 a.m. Young Children Service Risa Strauss will lead a special service in the chapel for pre-school through kindergarten. Childcare will be provided for the rest of the morning. Please RSVP for childcare. 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Yom Kippur Study Session We will gather together after the morning service for a “Yom Kippur shiur” (study session) with Rabbi Sherman in which we will examine and discuss the liturgy, biblical readings, and meaning of this day. 1:45 – 2:45 p.m. Family Service This special service is for children of all ages and their parents and families. 3:00 p.m. Afternoon Service This service includes a liturgical journey through Jewish history. The special Haftarah reading is the book of Jonah. 4:30 p.m. Yizkor and Neilah Services Our Yizkor Memorial Service will begin immediately following the conclusion of the afternoon service and will include the recitation of the names of all those in our congregation whom we have lost in the past year. After Yizkor we will proceed directly into the Neilah (or Concluding) Service. Please plan to stay for both services. We will end Yom Kippur with a triumphant blast of the Shofar, and then join together for our congregational break-the-fast in the social hall.

JOINT SELICHOT SERVICE FOR TREE OF LIFE CONGREGATION & BETH SHALOM SYNAGOGUE

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2011 at Beth Shalom Synagogue

8:30 p.m. Havdalah & Reception 9:00 p.m. Text Study & Discussion 9:30 p.m. Selichot Service

On the Saturday evening before Rosh HaShanah, we gather together for a very special service to help us prepare for the upcoming High Holy Days. The service is called “Selichot,” named for our prayers for forgiveness that we begin to offer at this time. The Selichot service introduces us to the themes, liturgy, and music of our Yamim Nora’im (the Days of Awe), thus helping us to get ready for this most holy and important time of year.

Once again, Tree of Life Congregation and Beth Shalom Synagogue will join together for this special evening, to be hosted by Beth Shalom. We will begin at 8:30 p.m. with Havdalah as we say goodbye to Shabbat. At 9:00 p.m. we will have a discussion led by Rabbi Case and Rabbi Sherman on “Jewish texts that changed our lives.” The Selichot Service – the first call of the Days of Awe – will follow at 9:30 p.m.

HIGH HOLY DAY INFORMATION FOR 5772

TOL High Holy Day Ticket Policy Temple members in good standing financially and their immediate dependent children under their family membership will be entitled to High Holiday seating as part of their membership. “In good standing financially” shall be defined as: All membership pledges, assessments, Religious School tuition, and other such financial obligations required by the Board of the membership, hereinafter called “fees,” MUST be paid in full for all PRIOR years. All current year fees shall NOT be required to be paid in full to be in good standing, provided that those current fees are paid in accordance with the timetables established by the Board of Directors. All fees owed after July from the prior fiscal year which remain unpaid shall place the member in the “not in good standing” category. Members of other congregations outside the City of Columbia with proof of membership and/or with High Holiday courtesy passes are entitled to the same seating privilege as Tree of Life members. Students at local universities, military basic trainees, and clients at state institutions will be admitted at no cost upon presentation of appropriate identification cards. All persons not covered under any of the preceding conditions must secure a High Holiday privilege card [$75.00]. Further, out-of-town guests of Tree of Life members are welcome to attend High Holiday services. A contribution is suggested by the Board of Directors for each individual. The Tree of Life reaffirms its long-standing policy of offering complete access to membership to all persons and full participation to those whose financial positions limit their financial support of the Temple. This policy of open membership is not in any way altered by this Resolution. Passed by the Board on May 13, 1981, to include an additional provision to the High Holiday Ticket Policy as follows: For residents living in the greater Columbia area (defined as a 50-mile radius), not covered by a previous policy provision, if their residency in this area has been longer than the previous High Holy Days, tickets will not be made available.

HIGH HOLY DAY CHOIR We want to thank our very talented TOL Music Director, Sharon Witherell, and the members of the High Holy Day Choir for all of their time and effort in preparation for our very special services. Rehearsals continue this month beginning at 7:00 p.m. on the following days: Tuesday, Sept. 6…Tuesday, Sept. 13…Thursday, Sept. 15… Tuesday, Sept. 20…Thursday, Sept. 22…Tuesday, Sept. 27… Tuesday, Oct. 4… and Thursday, Oct. 6. BRING YOUR OWN SHOFAR Do you have a shofar? Do you know how to blow a Tekiah? Would you like to participate in the High Holy Day Services? If yes, then we invite you be a part of the final tekiah at the conclusion of the Rosh HaShanah morning service. If interested, please contact Rabbi Sherman. There will be a meeting to rehearse this part of the service. TASHLICH This short ceremony takes place at a natural body of water on Rosh HaShanah afternoon. We will meet at 4:00 p.m. (following the conclusion of the RH Family Service) in front of the Temple and walk altogether across Trenholm Road to Cary Lake. Through tashlich, we attempt to rid ourselves of sin by symbolically casting our sins into the water. Bring some bread to throw into the water and join us for this Rosh HaShanah tradition. KEVER AVOT This is our annual pilgrimage to the cemetery, fulfilling the tradition of visiting the graves of loved ones during the High Holy Days. This short service is held on the Sunday between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. This year we will meet at the Hebrew Benevolent Society cemetery on Sunday, October 2 at 1:15 p.m. for our memorial service. BREAK-THE-FAST The Congregational Break-The-Fast will immediately follow the conclusion of the Neilah service on Yom Kippur day. This year’s Break-The-Fast is sponsored by the members of the TOL Board. There is no charge to attend. Please RSVP to the Temple office by Sept. 23, 2011. All members and guests are welcome to attend. HIGH HOLY DAY FOOD DRIVE Once again, the Temple Youth Group will be collecting canned and boxed food to distribute to the Harvest Hope and Jewish Family Service Food Banks. Brown bags will be distributed after Rosh HaShanah services. Please take one home and return it to Temple with your food donation. Please support this important food drive as we help to feed our neighbors here throughout the Midlands. LULAV & ETROG SETS If you are interested in purchasing your very own lulav and etrog, please contact the TOL office by Monday, September 12.

The Columbia Holocaust Education Commission is seeking life stories as they relate to the survival of the Holocaust. If you lived in Europe from 1933-1945 and have now come to South Carolina, we would like to hear your personal story. We have amazing stories from survivors and liberators of the Holocaust (from labor camps, concentration camps), but if you survived anytime during this period, we would like to hear and possibly tell the story within the exhibit. Please contact Lilly Filler at [email protected] and reference "survivor or liberator story" in the subject area. Send a brief overview of your experiences and then give a contact number or email in return. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you, Lilly S. Filler, Co-Chair
