SCRIP / BUCKS BACKThank you to everyone who purchased gift cards in August. This past year, Tree of Life earned over $4,500 through the SCRIP/ Bucks Back program. It’s easy to do, it doesn’t cost you anything extra, and it’s a great way for the Temple to earn some needed funds.

Remember: Bucks Back cards make great baby, wedding, birthday and holiday gifts!

The order deadline is Sunday, September 14, 2014.

If you are new to the program, visit www.tolsc.org/scrip to learn more about the Temple’s easiest fundraiser. Have any questions or need assistance? Contact Amy Scully, Bucks Back coordinator, at 803-497-3319 or [email protected]. Thank you for your support.

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

LET’S HAVE LUNCH

Fellow Congregants,

As I begin my third year as president of the Tree of Life, I look forward to it with optimism.

Last year was a very difficult year to say the least. The temple had a major financial crisis that took many hours of devotion by an extraordinary group of people to pull our congregation from a major financial mess.

That, however, was last year. This year will be different. Thanks to the support of some very generous members, our successful Big Nosh fundraiser, a past board that worked tirelessly to present and pass a balanced budget with a surplus, and a significant gift from a former congregant, we are financially in the best shape since I have been a board member.

What this means is that we can look forward to more programs and events, and our fundraisers can now be “fun-raisers” for everyone. During the holidays, I will fill you in on more information about these events.

Friday, September 5th is our New Member Shabbat– welcoming all our members, new members and prospective members. Let’s all come out and make it a warm welcome. Services start at 7:30pm.

Next I would like to say that it is imperative that all pledge forms for 2014-2015 are completed and turned in before the holidays. All fees and forms from last year must be paid and pledge forms must be received in order to be a “member in good standing” and to receive your High Holy Day tickets. Please remember to bring your tickets and guest passes as we will be asking for them at the door this year. Thank you for your support and help with this.

Finally, I would like to wish all of you a healthy and happy new year and look forward to seeing all of you at services at the High Holy Days.

As always…Warm regards, Richard H. Cohn, Sr.

Please join Rabbi Sherman next Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 12:30 p.m. for lunch at Groucho’s Deli in 5 Points (611 Harden St.). There’s no agenda – let’s just hang out and enjoy a good lunch and good company. We’ll talk Torah, Temple, Israel, High Holy Days, sports, or whatever else is on your minds. Have a question to ask? Come and join us. Everyone is invited (lunch is on your own). Thank you to Bruce Miller for opening his restaurant to the Tree of Life. We’ll meet on the first Wednesday of each month. Future dates: Oct. 1, Nov. 5, and Dec. 3. See you at Groucho’s!

FROM THE RABBI

LET’S HAVE LUNCH!! One of my favorite parts of being a congregational rabbi is the opportunity to get to know and share in the lives of our congregants. I like spending time with the members of our congregational family. I enjoy seeing you – and I would love to see you more often.! So I would like to invite you to come and have lunch with me. On the first Wednesday of every month, I will be having lunch at Groucho’s in Five Points (thank you to Bruce Miller for making this possible for us). Please come and join me. Everyone is invited; lunch is on our own. There will be no set agenda. We’ll talk, discuss, schmooze, ask questions, and get to know each other and our fellow congregants even better. I look forward to hanging out with you.

TIME TO GET READY!Rabbi Daniel Sherman

Our first lunch will take place on Wednesday, September 3 at 12:30pm at Groucho’s (611 Harden St.). Future dates: October 1, November 5, and December 3. I look forward to seeing you and sharing a meal with you.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL! I am very excited that the beginning of the Religious School year is finally here! Risa and I look forward to welcoming all of our students, families, teachers, and volunteers back to Temple on Sunday, September 7. The Religious School plays such an important role in the lives of both our school families and our congregation. We have an obligation to educate and support the children of our Temple, who represent the next generation of our people. The stronger our Religious School is, the stronger our congregation will be.! So I want to thank our students and our teachers for being here each Sunday morning and helping to create such a wonderful environment for learning and growth. A huge Todah Rabbah and Eyzeh Yofi goes to Ms. Risa for all that she does to make sure that Religious School is such a great experience for our students, their families, our teachers and staff, and the entire Tree of Life family. I also want to thank our volunteers and Religious School committee for all of their help, leadership, and support.

THANK YOU! A special TOL thank you goes to Marla May. Marla has been helping out and working in the Temple Office since April. She has assisted us in so many ways. Marla, thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to our Temple. Todah Rabbah!

HIGH HOLY DAY PREPARATIONS! As I write this article, we are getting ready to welcome the month of Elul – the last month of the year and the month that precedes our High Holy Days. Elul reminds us that we have to prepare ourselves for the end of the current year (5774) and the start of a new year (5775). Now is the time to get ready. Now is the time to reflect on this past year: we need to examine our actions, accomplishments, choices, growth, experiences, and more. What are we proud of? What did we do well? What didn’t go so well? When did we miss the mark? What would we change or do differently if we could? What would I like to do better in the new year? What kind of person have I been? What kind of person do I want to be?! Reflection and self-evaluation take time and preparation. I urge you to start and to take this process seriously. I guarantee you: the more you put into preparing for the High Holy Days and New Year, the more you will get out of them.! Another great way to prepare is by taking part in our annual Selichot Service on the Saturday evening (Sept. 20) before Rosh HaShanah. Selichot forces us to acknowledge that the start of the New Year is almost here, and we must get going with our TESHUVAH – our process of repentance and returning to our highest selves. It encourages us to take stock of the past year and to make plans for the new year. That’s what we need to be doing right now – before the start of the High Holy Days, and continuing on Rosh HaShanah and the days leading up to Yom Kippur. It’s not easy, but we can all do it. It’s good for us: as individuals, as families, and as a congregation and community.! I love seeing us come together as one KEHILLAH KEDOSHAH – one holy community – at this time of year. Good luck with your preparations. I look forward to seeing you at Temple.

L’SHANAH TOVAH TIKATEIVU – May we be inscribed in the Book of Life for a good and healthy New Year!

JOINT SELICHOT SERVICESaturday, September 20, 2014

8:30pm Havdallah & Reception9:00 p.m. Selichot ServiceTree of Life Congregation

On the Saturday evening before Rosh HaShanah, we gather together for a very special service to help us prepare for the upcoming High Holy Days. The service is called “Selichot,” named for our prayers for forgiveness that we begin to offer at this time. The Selichot service introduces us to the themes, liturgy, and music of our Yamim Nora’im (the Days of Awe), thus helping us to get ready for this most holy and important time of year.

Once again, Tree of Life Congregation and Beth Shalom Synagogue will join together for this special evening, to be hosted by TOL. We will begin at 8:30 p.m. with a short Havdalah Service and Reception, immediately followed by our Selichot Service.

Selichot is a wonderful way to prepare for the High Holy Days. We hope that you will join us for this special evening.

HIGH HOLY DAY CHOIR: We are very fortunate at Tree of Life to have such a wonderful High Holy Day Choir led by our Music Director, Sharon Witherell. We want to thank all of our devoted choir members for their participation in our services again this year. For more information, please contact Sharon ([email protected]) or call the Temple office. Rehearsals continue at 7pm on the following days: September 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, 30, and October 2.

CHILDCARE: Childcare for Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur services will again be available by reservation. Please call the Temple office or email Risa Strauss to secure a spot for your infant through third grader.

HIGH HOLY DAY SERVICES TICKETS & PASSESWe want to remind all TOL Members and Guests to bring their High Holy Day passes with them to services for both Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. All members in good standing will receive passes in the mail. Please make sure that you have returned your 2014-15 membership pledge form. If you have any questions, please contact the TOL Office.

Tree of Life CongregationColumbia, South Carolina

Ticket PolicyTemple members in good standing financially and their

immediate dependent children under their family membership will be entitled to High Holiday seating as part of their membership.

“In good standing financially” shall be defined as: All membership pledges, assessments, Religious School tuition, and other such financial obligations required by the Board of the membership, hereinafter called “fees,” MUST be paid in full for all PRIOR years, AND the current year’s dues pledge form must be received by the Temple Office.

All current year fees shall NOT be required to be paid in full to be in good standing, provided that those current fees are paid in accordance with the timetables established by the Board of Directors.

All fees owed after July from the prior fiscal year which remain unpaid shall place the member in the “not in good standing” category. An outstanding current year’s dues pledge form will also place the member in the “not in good standing” category.

Members of other congregations outside the City of Columbia with proof of membership and/or with High Holiday courtesy passes are entitled to the same seating privilege as Tree of Life members.

Students at local universities, military basic trainees, and clients at state institutions will be admitted at no cost upon presentation of appropriate identification cards.

All persons not covered under any of the preceding conditions must secure a High Holiday guest pass [$75.00]. Further, out-of-town guests of Tree of Life members are welcome to attend High Holiday services. A contribution is suggested by the Board of Directors for each individual.

The Tree of Life reaffirms its long-standing policy of offering complete access to membership to all persons and full participation to those whose financial positions limit their financial support of the Temple. This policy of open membership is not in any way altered by this ticket policy.

For residents living in the greater Columbia area (defined as a 50-mile radius), not covered by a previous policy provision, if their residency in this area has been longer than the previous High Holy Days, tickets will not be made available.

GREEN TEAM UPDATEThe Green Team wants to extend a welcome to all new members and wish everyone good health, prosperity, and happiness in the New Year. We hope that some of you will consider joining us and/or making a donation to the Green Team fund of TOL. We recognize that TOL members lead busy lives so we communicate by email rather than holding scheduled meetings.

Our purpose is to help TOL and our members take care of God’s Creation. Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World) is important in Judaism. We are a charter member of the Midlands Green Congregations Initiative, which sponsors educational and service programs. We have been recognized nationally by the Jewcology Project.

We maintain a rain garden that helps purify runoff from our property before it enters local waterways. Our rain garden has been recognized by the Richland County Appearance Commission and has served as an educational tool for Richland 2 Schools, USC, and conservation and gardening groups. We are members of the Richland County Partners for Healthy Watersheds and the Gills Creek Watershed Association. Our grounds have been certified as a wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.

We also help make sure that everything Richland County collects is recycled. We have separate programs for recycling office paper, cell phones, plastic bottle caps, batteries, and plastic 6-pack rings. We also compost some of our yard waste.

When the weather cools we hope to plant vegetation in the area cut by SCE & G. We also hope to add new wood chips to our entrance path.

Please contact us at [email protected] for more information or to volunteer.

“To waste, to destroy our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will result in undermining in the days of our children the very prosperity which we ought by right to hand down to them amplified and developed.” ― Theodore Roosevelt
