Nobles and Ladies, thesummer was full of eventsand fun. June began with allyour Progressive Divan at-tending the Grand Lodge ses-

sion in Flagstaff. At the request of MW Grand Master JamesRowan, I brought greetings on behalf of all the Appendent andConcordant bodies. Congratulations to the new Most Wor-shipful Grand Master of AZ Masons Brook Cunningham.

We had a great WSA meeting in San Ramon and partici-pated in the Parade. July brought Imperial in Denver and ElZaribah was housed in the Hyatt Regency, the Head-quarters Hotel, as was our joint WSA HospitalityRoom. We were honored to have our own MWGrand Master Brook Cunningham and Lady Lynnjoin both El Zaribah and Sabbar Shriners for theSession. As you know, we proposed legislationthat would allow El Zaribah Joint Jurisdiction inthe State of Sonora, Mexico with Anezeh Shrinersand it resulted in a positive vote.

In August, Lady Valerie and I joined Al Bahrand their families at the “Al Bahr Shrine Camp,” lo-cated atop Mt. Laguna (elevation 6,000 ft) in theCleveland National Forest. We learned right awaythat also present were other El Zaribah Shriners fromthe Yuma Foothills Shrine Club, Tommy & MargieCrosby and Ernie & Sally Hemmingway. What a fun timethis was and we were simply treated so well by everyone.Even the children welcomed Valerie and I by “TP’ing” ourcabin one night. Karaoke Night even had a performance by“The Singing Potentates.” I understand that years back, quitea few El Zaribah folks attended Shrine Camp and they’d surelike to see a lot more of us join them. They have 45 RV spaceswith full hookups and several cabins for rent. While there, weattended a Ceremonial and witnessed 26 men and womenbecome Cuzin’s during a Hillbilly Degree. They even had aHillbilly wedding.

While at Shrine Camp, Ill. Sir George Acuna of Al Bahr in-formed me they were conducting a Ceremonial in the City ofCuliacan, State of Sinaloa, Mexico (Al Bahr has Jurisdictionthere) and would be happy to include any Candidates we mayhave for El Zaribah from the State of Sonora. I’m proud to sayI attended this Joint Ceremonial conducted in Spanish, wherewe took in 11 new El Zaribah Shriners.

Say, when you see our Recorder Ill. Sir Jack Garrett, Ar-

turo, Juan and Fernando, say thanks to them. There hadbeen discussion of replacing the soundproof wall panels inthe auditorium. This would have cost approximately$40,000. Instead, Arturo, Juan and Fernando removed eachof the panels, steamed out the wrinkles and replaced themon the walls. This cost $2,000. Thank you gentlemen, forsaving us $38,000.

Speaking of Imperial Sessions, at the 2010 Imperial inToronto, a resolution was passed to officially replace ourname, Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the MysticShrine. It was replaced with a much shorter name and def-

initely more fitting (since we now have Shrine Templesthroughout the world) – we’re now known as

Shriners International. We have more events coming up this month

that provide fun and fellowship. Friday Sept. 9this our way of saying welcome back from thesummer, with the “Cheeseburger In Paradise”Jimmy Buffet Party. Saturday the 10th is ourChief Rabban’s Cigar Night which looks to be avery enjoyable evening and of course, ourShrine Circus the following weekend. The last

weekend of the month is the 100 Hole GolfMarathon and we hope we get a lot of participa-

tion in that. The Most Worshipful Grand Master’s granted us

permission to form a Masonic Degree Team. At this timethere’s a backlog of Candidates waiting to take their degreesinto Masonry and this would be a great help to the Lodgesas well as being beneficial to El Zaribah. I’m putting out thecall for volunteers to form this Degree Team and ask thatyou reply to me at your earliest convenience.

Remember the fun time available on the upcoming Pote’sTrip. Only 12 rooms are left for this trip to historic Nashville,TN and Gaylord’s Opryland Resort. Departing Sat., Oct. 1st,we’ll arrive Nashville mid-afternoon then to Opryland Resortvia buses. Just minutes from downtown Nashville, OprylandResort’s recognized worldwide for its extraordinary service, luxurious accommodations and first-class entertainment.Flyers and further information are available on the ElZaribah web site, www.el-zaribah.org. Southwest Airlines isrunning special rates right now for you to take advantageof.Yours In The Faith, Tom Calvin, Potentate 2011“Havin’ Fun, Gettin’ It Done”

Nobles, when we use the phrase, “theTemple will be dark during June, July andAugust,” it doesn’t mean your Templestaff isn’t busy.

Some of the upgrades include newpaint colors in the East Entrance Hall and both bathrooms. Re-placement of the large water heater on the second floor and newchairs in the Conference Room were also accomplished this sum-mer.

Thanks to Dave Scrimager for improving and revamping the soundsystem in the Red Fez and Auditorium. Thanks to the advice of LarryHauptman, the coverings on the auditorium wall sound panels were

reconditioned and treated to tighten the loose fabric. Fernando,Arturo and Juan did all this work. Replacement of these panelswould have cost about $40,000, so these gentlemen saved usabout $38,000. The crew also cleaned all the outside areas aroundthe building in the 109-degree weather.

Since the May issue of the Arabian Tales regarding the appro-priate forms to be completed and submitted for all Fund-Raising,the requests are being received in the proper order. Thanks to allyou Nobles!

Is Your Due Date

for the October Issue

of the

Arabian Tales

Some years ago when I was in business and self-employed, I didn’t wantnor could I justify the expense of having a computer. I settled for more con-ventional means of marketing and communication. Finally, it got to a pointwhere just about all my business contacts, both suppliers and customers, were using computers and email to operate. It was time to “get with it!!”

My office found using computers s-o-o-o much better than how we’d beenoperating before. Everything happened so much faster and more efficiently.Any errors were found quickly and corrected. Why had I waited?

There are still many of our Masonic and Shrine family who aren’t yet usingthis wonderful, thrilling (and sometimes frustrating!) way to communicate. Ifthis is you, please consider how easily everyone else can get information TOyou and more importantly, FROM you. There are so many good reasons to“Be On Line.”

I recommend talking to members of the El Zaribah Shrine Computer Club. They can help you determine what you’ll need and help you get started. Fred Wulff, Editor

When it’s 110 degrees here in the desert many El Zaribah membersseek out cooler weather and the Clowns areno different. Many of the Clowns are scat-tered throughout the world and as our deserttemperatures start to decrease, we’re at-tracted back to this oasis of Phoenix for itswarmth of the winter sun, the friendships andBrotherhood we all share. Welcome back to

all those returning from their travels. The Clowns are gearing up for the 2011 Shrine Circus. We’re excited

to be a part of this annual event and we hope to see all of you there. It’sour time to show the Valley of the Sun that El Zaribah Shriners are morethan men who wear the little red fez. It’s a great time to share our Broth-erhood we have as Masons, the ability to have fun as Shrine Masonsand to share our story of the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children.

I’m requesting that if you’re not currently active in our Shrine and youwant to find a place to fit in, think about coming out to the Clown monthlymeeting and checking us out (1st Monday of the month - 6 pm for Dutchtreat dinner in the Red Fez; the meeting starts at 7 pm in the Clownroom).

We’re starting to grow in numbers and we could still use more newmembers, and I don’t just mean new to the world of Shrinedom. Pull outyour fez, dust it off and come on out! We’re not going to ask questionsabout why you haven’t been around, we’re only going to ask what youwant to get do to become an active member in the Clown Unit.

But as usual this is just one Clown’s opinion. BB Clown aka Sir Knight Douglas Fry, 32°

Clowns...

Well, summer’s winding down, the temperatures will be moderatingand the lights are coming on at El Zaribah. It’s time to get back into theswing of things and keep the chow lines moving. The Unit and Club meet-ings are on the 1st Tuesday of the month at 7:00, and a few servers areneeded around 4:30. The Stated Meetingsare on the 2nd Wednesday at 7:00, and a fullcrew is needed to set up around 4:30 andstart serving at 5:30. Be sure to come to theUnit meetings on the 3rd Tuesday or Thurs-day, to be announced, where serious mattersof great importance will be discussed.

The Shrine Circus will be Sept. 16th-18th, with a short Parade on the17th. There will be other opportunities to help out at the Circus as well. There’s also a Parade in Pinetop on Sept. 24th. There are many other ac-tivities and opportunities this month, so be sure to check the calendar tosee how active a Shriner you can be.

There are other things to remember in September. Sept. 11th is Pa-triots Day, World Trade Center Remembrance Day. Sept. 17th is Consti-tution Day to commemorate the adoption of the U.S. Constitution. I’llcertainly make every effort to celebrate National Chocolate MilkshakeDay on Sept. 12th.

I’m looking forward to seeing you soon. Ralph Jones, Scribe

It’s hard to believe but here we are in September with events and ac-tivities kicking off the Fall season. Circus is coming very fast. From the Di-

rector’s Staff point of view, it’s a busy time. Lots of workto do in support of Past Pote Jack and Noble Bob; how-ever, like always, we’ll be there to help. Oh, you say youdon’t see us that much? Well, we’re just that good sup-port team that works behind the scenes and gets thejob done, that’s what the guys in the “Red Coveralls”are all about. To help you find us, the guys will make apoint to be seen a bit more this year in a manner that’s

easier to recognize us. Keep an eye out for us!By the way, if you’ve ever thought about joining us, now’s a great time

to see and experience what the Unit’s about at its best. We have a steadyaddition of new members, but there’s room for more and again from ourpoint of view, we’re sure you won’t regret it.

Right behind the Circus comes our next meeting on Sept. 28th. Thiswill be a fun meeting as the Director’s Staff plans for the Lake HavasuCeremonial. Not going to talk much about that this month, but get readyand make it a great experience for everyone. An ‘ol red coverall

Welcome back from the dark into the light. Desert Chariots is up andrunning full blast! Our Pres. Big Dave Gossen’s doing a great job this yearand we all thank him.

Now, down to business guys! Our Unitconsists of 8 great guys and their Chariots. The decorated Chariots receive a lot of at-tention in the Parades where we carry theDivan. We’d love to grow our numbers thisyear to at least twelve Chariots.

The Chariots, in case you’re wondering, are street legal dune buggy convertibles. Why walk when you can ride! You can own a street legal convertible Chariot for around $3500. We canhelp you find the right Chariot for you. Just join us for our monthly meet-ing that begins at 5:30 prior to each Stated Meeting. Ladies are alwayswelcome. Not a lot of action since our May article. MayStated Meeting Color Guard was McCullough,Scrimager and Johnston with support from LOHmembers Wax, Tutell, Massey, Hagenian, andMike Folker. Prescott Valley Parade marcherswere Wax, Hettervik and Johnston with LOH mem-bers Hagenian, Butler and Massey doing their things. Legion of honor...

Well, it seems we all made it through another Arizona summer. Ourmembers have been keeping busy and traveling. In June, Tom Ritter wasa road guard for the “Run for the Wall” andJim Reid and Buzzy Busswell trailered theirbikes to the event. Dana and Stephanie Dob-son spent some serious time in the saddle.Wilkie will be riding all over and around Michi-gan. A few of our guys have been helping outthe Patriot Guard Riders locally. All in all,we’ve put a lot of miles on our bikes all summer long.

Parade wise, some braved the weather and attended the AugustDoin’s Rodeo Roundup Parade in Payson. This year they also are cele-brating the 127th Annual World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo.

The “Minnesota Boys” will be back soon and we hope they bring someof that cooler weather with them. I know there will be many additionalstories to share (all TRUE, of course).

Please join us at our next meeting Thursday, Sept. 8th, as we makeplans for the rest of the year. Mike O, EZMC VP

Well, another HOT summer’s over, sort of, and we El Dulabs are look-ing forward to enjoying what’s left of this year… The cool part.

Our small but mighty Unit’s been keeping our old and classic carsclean and polished for all the remaining El Zaribah Pa-rades and events.

The good news is we still have room for some “new”members in our Unit. Don’t forget; if you have an oldor classic car, are planning to get one or just like toride, you need to join us, the El Dulabs.

Become “MOTORVATED” and help El Zaribah by being active andseen in our Parades. Howard Goldman, Pres.

What a shock and pleasant surprise it was when my wife and I werewalking around one Sunday afternoon in Coronado, CA. Out of the bluestanding before us were Gary and Beverly Stewart. They were spendinga little time at their local residence and decided to stroll thru one of themany city parks. Talk about a small world.

Kendall and Marilyn Smith, former Imperial Beach residents, returnedwith their son Steve, his wife Jen and the grandchildren for a short vaca-tion. After learning that Steve would soonbecome one of El Zaribah’s new Shriners,I took advantage of the moment to ac-quaint Steve with the Greeters Unit beforehe becomes “protected” from Unit Re-cruiters for the one-year “hands off” period. In all honesty, whatever ElZaribah Unit is fortunate enough to land him as a member will be verylucky, as he appears to be a fine person and, of course, he does comefrom good stock.

We were also privileged to spend some time with Bob and Dodie Rich-mond who were in the San Diego area visiting their grandson Rian, aNavy Seal, and his family. Rian took time from his duties as an instructorto give us a tour of the Seal’s training facilities. Wow! Talk about an im-pressive group of young men.

Paula and Chuck Richards just returned from their extended vacationat their son’s ranch in Northern Utah. While visiting there, they traveled tosee friends who own a cabin in the heart of the Montana Rockies. It ap-pears as though they could have enough background information to keepus all listening intently to many stories.

Until next month……

The Oriental Band was dark for the summer months but there was stillsome activity.

On June 18th, we participated in the PrescottValley Parade with our float (see picture). Ridingon the float were Gene Terrell on the bass drum,Hank Johnson on the blocks and Bob Beffel on theMusette. In addition to the Prescott Valley Parade,Bob Beffel was in Denver during the Imperial Ses-sion and represented El Zaribah in the ImperialParade on the 4th of July. Bob got to meet many

other Oriental Bands during the Parade lineup and compare notes (men-tal as well as musical).

We’re looking forward to kicking off the Fall season and attending asmany Parades as possible. Come join us for a practice on Tuesday nightin the Band Room and try on an oriental instrument for fun. SC

Because of circumstances beyond our control we weren’t able to com-plete the 2nd “Patrol Pin Table” prior to the end of the summer break. Nowthat things are kind of back to normal, we’ll start scheduling work parties

(oxymoron?) to finish that project. Most of our members have re-

turned from holiday and we’re look-ing forward to the Shrine activitiesthat lie ahead. We pray everyone isreturning in good health and spirit.

This month is the Shrine Circus. We’ll need all hands to help take tickets for each and every performance,as well as bring the bicycles to the center ring during intermission.

Next month is the Lake Havasu Ceremonial, to be held at the new lo-cation, where we’ll be selling Shrine western hats and fez cases. And ofcourse there are the Parades that make us visible and help us get out theword as to what Shrine Masons are all about.

The Patrol’s excited to get back to work and look forward to seeing allthe Nobility at the Stated Meeting Wednesday, September 14th.Fred Wulff, Capt.

Wow, does time fly! It seems as though we get a little break and offwe go on the road again. Well, let me try andbring you up to date as best I can. The firstpart of the year the Black Camel paid ussome very unwanted visits. Please Brothers, take a short time to say a small prayer forthem and their families.

We finished the first half of the Parades ingood shape, Prescott being the last, and we just finished Payson. Look-ing forward to Pinetop and Havasu to finish out another great year for us.

While I’m on the subject, we do have a couple of cars for sale so thereare vehicles for our new members. Speaking of new members, our Unitmembers are ecstatic to have our Past Pote joining us. Welcome Phil, and do enjoy that Basha’s rig - it’s a pleasure to have you.

Please remember we need all of the help selling tickets on Fridaynight for the Shrine Circus, note that on your calendar, make it a point tobe there and check with our Pres. to see when the cars Parade.

As you’re all aware, we in Transportation are one of our Temple’smainstay Units. We’ve always made Parades with great attendance andI’m positive we’ll continue. Realizing not all of us can always make all ofthem; just try is all the Unit needs. As for the meetings, for years they’vealways been on the 1st Wed. of the month at 7 pm except when we godark. I’m asking you to set aside one night a month for all of us togetheras a Unit, and brotherly love. In short Man-up and Show-up. Always atyour service.

Welcome back from the summer! The Drum & Bugle Corps took themonths of June and July off from all meetings and practices, but gotstarted right up after that. We performed both days at theCornFest in late August. We hope you were able to seeus one or both of the days as we performed a MilitaryTribute that was enjoyed by all. Plus we again includedsome numbers we’ve never performed before. We hada lot of fun learning and performing them for you.

The Drum & Bugle Corps plans to be active in Sep-tember with performances at the Shrine Circus on Sep-tember 17th and perhaps again in Show Low on Sept.23rd-24th. We hope to see many of you there.

Now for a short music lesson: Our Bugle Section hasoften been asked why we play trumpets in the Drum & Bugle Corps. Infact, they aren’t trumpets, but are Bugles. The earliest bugles were madewith no valves, used primarily in the Military. These bugles were made inthe key of Concert G. Gradually, bugles came to include a single valve, some to lower the tone by a half step and some to raise the tone by a fullstep. Later, bugles were made including 2 or 3 valves and are used in theexact manner as that of a trumpet. But in all cases, the bugle remainedin the key of Concert G, which is what now defines the instrument as abugle. A trumpet is in the key of Concert B Flat. Another interesting noteis that Concert Band instruments vary in that some are in the key of Con-cert B Flat, some may be E Flat or F. But in a Bugle Corps, all horns arein Concert G, including the Soprano, Alto, Baritone, French Horn, Bass, and Contrabass.

Until next time, Alto Bugle

We invite members of El Zaribah and their Ladies with an interest incomputing to visit our Club meetings. Ladies attend and participate alongwith their Noble. The Club meets the 4th Monday of each month at 7:00pm except June, July, and August. Many of us meet for dinner in the RedFez room prior to the meeting.

Plan to come to our September meeting, bringing expertise, software problems orhardware problems. That way you can havecomputer fun as we move into the Fall andWinter activities.

A lot of good information is presented ateach of our meetings. Don’t be shy about bringing your problems for usto work on. There are no dumb questions, as the answer to what might bethought dumb is what several members wanted to ask but were shy orperhaps had a problem expressing it. Sometimes the answer to yourquestion brings questions in related areas from other members.

We spend little time with administrative action and most talking or work-ing with computers. If you have a computer problem that requires bring-ing in your computer do not hesitate to do that.

In early June, the Club was host to a very successful LAN Party. De-tails of this successful and profitable endeavor will be presented at theSeptember meeting.

The Computer Club has a Web Page that can be accessed at:http://members.cox.net/computerclub/

It can also be accessed from the El Zaribah Web Page link. The Com-puter Club Web Page contains links to other web sites that provide use-ful information for the use of computers. Check these links out and seewhat they offer. Virgil Johnston, Club Sec.

Daughters of the Nile...

It’s been a long, hot summer but we’re back and ready to start work-ing for the KIDS!

We started our summer with a really successful golf tournament, thentraveled to Sarasota, FL, for our annual Grand Council meet - what awonderful time we had there. Now, we’re done with three months of “dark”time and are raring to go!

Our first Court meeting is Sept. 26th at El Zaribah Shrine. We servedinner at 5:30 followed by Court at 7 pm.

On October 9th we’ll hold our Fall Membership Tea at 2 pm at ElZaribah. Most of you are aware that the 2009 Shrine Imperial Session passeda resolution to start accepting third party pay (insurance) to reduce the gapbetween revenue and expenses in our hospital system. Shriners Hospi-tals for Children have worked very hard these past 2 years to implementthis. In order to fully implement this strategy, it’s necessary for ShrinersHospitals for Children to inform the patient/family that their insurancemight require a co-pay and deductible (first party pay) and make a rea-sonable attempt to collect said payments. A resolution was passed at the2011 Imperial Session to allow Shriners Hospitals for Children to proceedwith first party pay as it relates to insurance payments.

This is a significant change to the way Shriners Hospitals for Childrenhave operated over the years and could affect approximately 1/3 of ourpatients. This change in strategy is necessary to insure the health of ourhospital system for years to come. The mission of Shriners Hospitals forChildren hasn’t changed - that of providing the highest quality care to chil-dren with neuromusculoskeletal conditions, burn injuries and other spe-cial healthcare needs within a compassionate family-centeredenvironment. We’ll continue to carry out this mission without regard torace, color, creed, sex or sect, disability, national origin or ability of thepatient or family to pay.

Please contact a Divan member or me if you have any questions con-cerning this subject. Jim Miller, PP, Hospital Chairman

SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN SALT LAKE CITY

WELCOMES NEW BOARD MEMBER

Every day Shriners Hospitals for Children Salt Lake City treats childrenwith pediatric orthopaedic conditions, regardless of their ability to pay, thanks largely to the hard work and support of the Shriners InternationalMasonic fraternity.

The hospital’s Board of Governors is comprised of Shriners from thevarious regions the hospital servers, all whom volunteer their time and re-sources to help the hospital exceed its expectations and provide qualitycare.

This year the hospital board is pleased to welcome a new member,David Polner of El Zaribah Temple, Phoenix, AZ. Polner is intimately in-volved with the medical community—he is a nurse anesthetist who hopeshis knowledge of the evolving medical world will bring something extra tothe board.

“I want to serve the Shriners the best I can,” said Polner. As a boardmember he hopes to become involved in the infrastructure of how thehospital works, and discover where help may be needed.

Polner’s been a Shriner for 31 years, along with his father and broth-ers, “it’s familial,” he says. In addition to being a practicing nurse anes-thetist and the president of the Association of Veteran Affairs NurseAnesthetists, Polner’s involved in the Transportation Fund, was in theArmy for 21 years and is the co-chair of Clothe-A-Child, which provideshomeless children with $75-100 worth of clothes for Christmas.

Hospital board members are elected as positions become available.Once elected by their local chapter leadership and approved by the board, they can serve up to three, three year terms.

Illustrious Sir Tom:I’d like to make a public apology to you and all of El Zaribah’s Nobil-

ity for the indiscretion of my Ford Mustang parking in the Potentate’sParking Spot on the night of our May Stated Meeting.

While I believe I’ve not had a problem relinquishing the gavel and em-bracing the fact I’m now a Past Potentate, it appears my Mustang is hav-ing some problems relinquishing the Potentate’s Parking Spot. I’ve takenit upon myself to severely reprimand my car for its actions, however I be-lieve my reprimand might have fallen on deaf ears.

I also recognize my car required some assistance in moving your carout of the way so it could get into the Pote’s Spot. While I don’t have anydefinite facts to confirm who assisted my car, I suspect some of our No-bles (Culinary) decided this might be a good practical joke to pull on thetwo of us. I admit I found it rather amusing, but also realize I have to tryto get control of my car in the future (although I can’t guarantee it).

I hope you’ll accept this apology and forgive my car for its indiscretion.I know you also found the event to be humorous, as we both got a goodlaugh out of it, but I’ll attempt to keep my car under control in the future. Can you FEEL the love?Yours in the Faith, Jim Miller, Past Potentate
