Dear Friend, September is self improvement month and if there’s a theme that suits Evolving better, I don’t know what it is. I believe conscious living includes the responsibility of continually working on the self and all it entails. To con-sciously evolve is to create and maintain a direction and
flow in life that coincides with your beliefs. Although I’m well aware of various modalities for conscious evolution—whether it’s journaling, self care, healthy eating, meditation, exercise, spending time in nature or creative expression—I still have to give my subconscious a nudge and remind myself to work on these practices. I try to take inventory occasionally of who I’ve been, who I am and who I’m becoming. Awareness truly is enlightenment—and opens the door to self improvement. To honor the self improvement theme, we have included a very special sec-tion this month: Self Improvement… Services and products to help you on your jour-ney. Not only will you find healthy, nourishing, life-enhancing products and services listed, but the wide variety of advertisers will help to guide you in the direction of self care, as well. Please frequent the advertisers inside these pages and throughout Evolving—and, tell them where you saw their ad! Our adver-tisers support this publication and enable us to continue to bring vital, infor-mative, enlightening features and events each month. Thank you, as always,

Artist Susan Towers says, “I wanted to do something that showed the continual change of nature and the seasons—not just the obvious fall colors of a maple tree... The moon constantly reminds us of the ever-changing nature of life. The center symbol has to do with walking in balance with Earth with all things given their own time and season. It also represents the four sacred directions and corresponds to the four seasons. The center point represents our unique perspective of Spirit and our eternal connection to the Divine. The spiral on top of the cen-
ter symbol reminds us of the continual expansion and contraction of the Universe.”

September is National Pain Awareness Month
By Yvonne Keeny Pain care advocates across the nation are engaging in activities promoting pain awareness in order to focus public attention on pain as a national healthcare problem. The National Center for Health Statistics indicates that more than 76 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. This is more than one in four Americans who live with pain on a regular basis. Pain affects more people than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined. Pain is the most common reason Americans access the healthcare system and is a leading contributor to healthcare costs. Conservative estimates have placed the effect that pain has on our economy at over $100 billion per year. Pain that goes untreated can have a significant impact on the suf-ferer and their family and friends. Chronic pain can become so severe that it affects the sufferer’s concen-tration, job performance, social life, daily activities and sleep. These negative effects of pain can also cause depression and isolation. This year, the Fibromyalgia Coa-lition International, a nonprofit or-
ganization in Merriam, KS, will host a Health and Wellness Expo to bring awareness to many other pain conditions as well as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. The event will be held on Sat., Sept. 26 from 10am to 2:00pm, at Menorah Medical Center, 5721 West 119th Street in Overland Park. (Enter on east side.) The “Power Over Pain” Health and Wellness Expo will feature speakers who are pain experts, free health screenings, demonstrations and hourly drawings. Admission is free so bring your family and friends and come on out!
Yvonne Keeny is founder and ex-
ecutive director of the Fibromyalgia Coalition International. She suffered with fibromyalgia and chronic fa-tigue syndrome for over 13 years. With the help of a few alternative/
integrative healthcare providers and self-help techniques, she has been well since 1997. She is editor of the Fibromyalgia Alternative News maga-zine, and leads a support group in Mission, Kan. For further informa-tion visit www.fibrocoaltion.org or

New Practice Combines Quantum Science and Spiritual Insight
What would life be like if you lived every minute of every day with the deep peace of knowing the nothing and no one is against you? Two local au-thors have teamed up to create a pow-erfully transformative practice that they believe can help you do just that. The Art & Practice of Living with Nothing and No One Against You, co-authored by Gary Simmons, Th.D. and Rima E. Bonario, is an interactive work-book that weaves together metaphysi-cal and scientific information to illumi-nate how we create our lives in ways that either support us or confound us. Hailed by spiritual leaders and vision-aries such as Barbara Marx Hubbard and Michael Beckwith, Simmons and Bonario are now traveling and speak-
ing throughout North America sharing the practice. The authors take readers through an in-depth 21-day practice designed to reveal a new perspective on life’s most uncomfortable moments. According to Simmons and Bonario, too often in life we believe that our outer circumstances hold us back, drive us crazy, or cause us pain. However, the pair contends that it is our inner life, and the meaning we assign to outer circumstances, that really drives our experience of reality. “When we wait for others to change, for outer circumstances to adjust, we give away our sense of wholeness and our very freedom to craft the life our heart desires,” says Simmons. Bonario adds, “With practice and perseverance,
in just 21 days, you really can radically shift your perception and your experi-ence of life.” Simmons and Bonario are teaching a 5-session course at Unity Village Chapel in Unity Village, MO. begin-ning Sunday October 4, 2009 and con-tinuing on Wednesdays throughout October. The course, based on the teachings and daily practices found in their workbook, offers a comprehensive practice for moving to a new level of authentic expression, masterful living, and manifesting magnificence. For more information on their up-coming course, or to purchase a work-book, visit the www.TheQEffect.com.

From a reader…
Jill, I want to thank you for publishing Evolving. I really love it and now grab an extra copy (I get mine at Unity Tem-ple on the Plaza) to mail to a good friend in Columbia, Missouri. At the end of last year, when Jeanette Schoenlaub-Jackson passed away, I did not know her, but I cried so much. Not just for a woman who died awfully young, but for the sad loss of my favorite publication, KC Wellness. Thank you so much for creating Evolv-ing. It is such an awesome magazine and great resource. I make sure all my friends on the spiritual journey get a copy of it.

From an advertiser…
Connie and Jill, Wow!!!! What creative geniuses you both are. I love the ad and Connie I so appre-ciate the word-smithing with putting my ad/event information together at the 11th hour. Your enthusiasm, giving 120 percent and genuine caring is evi-dent and has blessed me in ways uni-maginable. I was astounded and ever so grate-ful for the effort and time you took in pulling together numerous bits of in-formation from going online to Inter-Play and the info I sent. It touched my heart when you acknowledged other energy work that I do that I have kept under covers and put it out for me on the ad without my prompting. Amazing. Above and beyond, your talents and your sincerity and your loving heart are very evident. Words cannot say thanks enough.

A Centered Spirit
By Jill Dutton Massage therapists abound in the Kansas City area. Few, however, prac-tice Maya Abdominal Massage, a non-invasive external massage that helps align the internal reproductive organs. It’s also believed to relieve tension in the diaphragm, improve organ func-tion and help maintain overall health in the patient. Alex Jackson, owner of Centered Spirit, and Danielle Jerome, are both certified in Maya Abdominal Mas-sage. Although they offer many ser-vices including CranioSacral Therapy, Reiki, Nutrition Counseling, Chi Nei Tsang and traditional massage, the abdominal massage is their specialty. Doctors in the Kansas City area often refer patients to Centered Spirit for help with fertility issues as well as digestive problems. Jackson says abdominal massage is so beneficial because, “We all carry everything in our gut. After awhile it builds up. Stress causes us to tighten up the organs, creating decreased cir-culation. Maya Abdominal Massage
provides relief.” One benefit of abdominal massage is aligning a displaced, or tipped, uterus. Jackson says a displaced uterus is the primary cause of men-strual dysfunction. By massaging the area, “It helps to reposition the repro-ductive organs to a more optimal state and increases circulation and Chi,” Jackson says. Jackson believes he was drawn to the healing arts for a reason. He says, “I had an intuitive sense when I was around people that I could help them
in some way. Massage was an outlet for that service. The abdominal mas-sage has extended that reach.” Both Jackson and Jerome believe in fully getting to know their patient’s needs. The first visit includes a two-hour consultation covering personal medical history, health care needs, self-care techniques and dietary and herbal remedies. A few of the common symptoms relieved by Maya Abdominal Massage include: • Digestive disorders • Irritable Bowel Syndrome • Painful periods and ovulation • Crohn’s disease/Colitis/Gastritis • Frequent or painful urination • Bladder or yeast infections • Peri-menopause and menopause

By Bethany Klug, DO It’s not unusual for me to feel sad as autumn settles in. Summer’s bounty is winding down, and soon I will be reliant on grocery store pro-duce. Years ago that didn’t bother me. Now more of our food comes from far away places like New Zealand, Chile and Mexico, and its road weariness shows. It doesn’t look or taste good. Last year, I grew greens under a shelter called a cold frame with mixed success. When the temperatures dropped into the teens in De-cember, everything stalled out until March. Alas, I’m doing something I never would have consid-ered a few years ago. I’m putting food up. Prior to refrigeration, most homes had a root cellar. My grandparents had one dug into their basement. They grew their own vegetables, ber-ries, apples and cherries, which my grandmother canned for the winter. By the time this article goes to press, one will be built in my base-ment. All that’s needed is a corner, two well in-sulated walls, an insulated door and PVC pipe for air exchange and temperature control. The book Root Cellaring: Natural Cold Storage of Fruits and Vegetables by Mike and Nancy Bubel details many ways to keep food cold without refrigera-tion and most don’t require a basement! Most winter produce can be kept in cold stor-age with little to no preparation. The first half of the Bubel’s book is devoted to selecting and pre-
paring foods for storage. It’s quite simple, espe-cially when you remember that humans did this for millennia prior to the Oil Age. It’s how we survived. My grandmother put food up with high-temperature canning. I just can’t get into the energy cost of it or slaving over a hot stove. Imagine my pleasure when I happened upon Preserving Food without Freezing or Canning by the Gardeners and Farmers of Terre Vivante, an eco-logical research and education center in south-eastern France. The book deliberately ignores energy-intensive freezing and high-temperature canning, in favor of centuries old methods that maintain and enhance the life of the food: pre-serving in the ground or cellar, drying, lacto-fermentation, sweet and sour preserves, preserv-ing in oil, vinegar, salt, sugar and alcohol. The recipes are simple and are for small quantities, not bushels. This works for the produce I get from my small garden, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and farmer’s market. Here’s a recipe from the book.

large. Heat enough vinegar in a saucepan to cover the zucchini. Immerse the zucchini in the vinegar as soon as it begins to boil. Immediately, remove from heat and leave the zucchini to poach for five minutes. Drain and blot with pa-per towels. Layer the zucchini in the jars along with two or three chopped mint leaves. Cover the contents of the jar with oil and close it, pref-erably with a cork—I used Mason jar lids. The zucchini will keep for up to one year in a cool dry place. Nature Is Nurture
By Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. In thinking about cycles and sea-sons, my mind and heart turn to na-ture and its amazing capacity to feed, heal, inspire, amaze and, sometimes, terrify us. For millennium, people of many tribes and origins have experi-enced nature as a path to healing, spirituality, the secrets of life and the universe. As a people, we have be-come more separated from the natural world than at any time in history. Some children have no idea where any of their food (animal or plant) originated. Some have never seen a forest, a farm, the ocean or many of the wonders of nature. Richard Louv writes in Last Child In the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder: “Within the space of a few decades, the way chil-dren understand and experience na-ture has changed radically. The polar-ity of the relationship has reversed. Today, kids are aware of the global threats to the environment, but their physical contact, their intimacy with nature, is fading.” Some facts that sup-port the need for this intimacy with nature may surprise you:
•Visual exposure to settings with trees produced significant recovery from stress in five minutes, evidenced by
changes in blood pressure and mus-cle tension.
•Housing areas with more trees had lower rates of home violence than in similar housing with fewer or no trees. Ties to neighbors were stronger.
•Office workers without views of na-ture claimed 23 percent more inci-dents of illness in a six-month period than those with views of nature.
•Hospital patients with views of trees needed less medication and had faster recovery times after surgery than those without such views.
•Children with ADD, ADHD experi-enced relief of symptoms after con-tact with nature. Being outside in paved, non-green areas didn’t relieve symptoms.
•Kids who spend more time outside, away from the TV set, are less likely to develop myopia.
There is a growing body of scien-tific evidence, certainly validated by our personal experience, that being in contact with nature offers many bene-fits contrasted with the high cost of alienation from nature. How many of us would like to feel less stressed, greater alertness of our senses, better physical and emotional health? Who wouldn’t trade depression, anxiety, being overweight, for a sense of peace,
clarity, better focus, and more energy? The connection or re-connection with nature has positive effects for each of us personally and for the well-being of plants, animals and the earth. The more we connect, the better we feel and the more we want to preserve the natural environment. I am re-minded of the words attributed to Chief Seattle: This we know: all things are connected like the blood that unites us. We do not weave the web of life, We are merely a strand in it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. Nature nurtures us as we experi-ence that early morning walk, visit a
park or experience a new vista of nature in some other place. We are nurtured by the food we plant in that new backyard garden. Even as we sweat, suffer a few bug bites, perhaps get a sun burn, we may be contributing to the renewal of the earth and her living beings, experi-encing that sense of sacred connec-tion. Try it, you may even like it!

By Carmelita Davis Beets As we transition from the hot sum-mer months to the crisp air of autumn, it’s a wonderful time to think about the importance of the seasons in our lives. And since this issue of Evolving is focused on the seasons, it’s the per-fect time to write about Ayurveda, a health science that originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. The Ayurvedic philosophy is based on living life in the harmony and bal-ance of the natural cycles of the world; being aware of the subtle things in life and the world; and learning to adjust your body, mind, emotions, and spirit to them. The Ayurvedic year is di-
vided into six seasons that can ulti-mately be reduced to three primary growing seasons and three harvests. The first harvest comes in the spring and consists mainly of roots, sprouts and bitter greens that are fed by the spring rains and melting winter snow. The second harvest comes in the summer, and is characterized by a more plentiful harvest of fruits and vegetables that are picked continu-ously during the extended growing season. And the final harvest, though it takes place in the fall, is referred to as the winter harvest because the food feeds us throughout the long, cold winter months. During this harvest, the last growths of vegetables are
gathered, along with nuts and grains. The three harvest seasons coincide with the three major Ayurvedic sea-sons of eating. In the spring, the em-phasis is on cleansing and weight loss, with a low-fat/low-calorie diet that includes the wonderful greens of the spring harvest. The summer diet is high in carbo-hydrates and features high-energy fruits and vegetables that provide vigor and vitality. And in the winter, a high-protein diet helps us stay warm through the cold months. Ayurvedic philosophy also holds that each of us is a mixture of three body types, but everyone has one body type that is dominant. For exam-ple, those who have winter or “Vata” body types are frequently cold all year around. Those who are always warm are said to have summer or “Pitta” body types. And others retain water all year around and have a spring or “Kapha” body type. I encourage you to learn more

Shamans believe that any imbalance is due to a disconnect in an individual’s spiri-tual wellbeing. This imbalance may mani-fest physically, mentally and emotionally. Shamans connect with the rhythms and cycles of the natural world (often herbs, songs and prayer) to teach patients what they need to heal themselves. Many condi-tions unresponsive to Western Medicine may be completely cured in a very short time with this powerful spiritual practice of treating the whole individual, not just dis-ease and symptoms. Money is a major source of stress for most people and conflicts over money are often cited as one of the primary reasons for marital problems. When a marriage breaks up and a couple is overwhelmed with emotion, money is sometimes the last thing they feel like talking about. However, this is the time to pay close attention in order to get a grip on their financial futures and be very careful not to let these important decisions slip away in the flood of emotions. Become knowl-edgeable and take charge of your financial future with pre-divorce financial planning

Reflexology produces a deep relaxation throughout the body clearing congested organs and tissues. It balances energy flow by stimulating nerve endings found in the feet and hands. These reflex points com-municate instantly with the brain and spi-nal cord. Reflexology uses small muscle movement techniques and profoundly effects the inside of the body, head, neck, chest, and abdomen.

Why are some habits, behaviors and beliefs so difficult to change or overcome? It would be so easy if we could simply decide we want to change and then make it happen, but quite often there are “core
issue(s)” hidden deep within our subcon-scious mind that hinder or prevent the desired changes from occurring. Hypnosis is an excellent tool that quiets your conscious mind allowing you to ac-cess your subconscious mind where you can discover, address and resolve these core issues thus facilitating the change you desire. The chakras (energy centers) are each carriers of specific energies of conscious-ness. Our nervous system is the delivery vehicle for these energies. This means that the nervous system’s capacity to transmit particular chakra energies determines the degree to which we can actually experience higher levels of consciousness, as well as our ability to manifest that consciousness in our lived experience. We can only have awareness in these different levels if our nervous system can carry those particular energies. Clearing and balancing the nervous system produces a tangible means for spiritual development as well as emotional and physical healing.

Thoughts are things! Excuse me, did I say thoughts are things? How can that be? Things are things (excuse the redundancy) that one can see or feel or touch; so how can a thought be a thing? Well, thoughts are vibrations of energy and although we can’t see or feel or touch them directly, we certainly see, feel and touch their results. Let me give an ex-ample. Everything in our physical environment was a thought before it became a chair, a table, a beauti-ful painting, a computer or your car. Someone thought these things, imagined them in their mind down to the last detail. Otherwise, how did they get here? Think about it! Thoughts are mental vibrations that create your life. It is the Law of Vibration, the Law of Attraction in action. Everything in your life is your own crea-tion. Yes, that’s true whether you deliberately, that is consciously, created the things and circumstances of your life, or just let your thoughts run amuck and let your life be created by default—your fault. Well, most people don’t accept the fault, they place it somewhere else, like, I had a lousy childhood, it’s my mom’s fault, it’s my neighborhood, no money, it is God’s fault! Yes, people even use God as their scape-goat when they are unable to explain the circum-stances of their life. “God’s will be done” is often
used as a crutch to lean upon when they have failed to understand and work with the Law. We all live in the same world and are as far apart as the differences in our thought processes. Some fail while others succeedm some are sick, others are healthy, some are miserable, others happy. We all want to blame luck or fate or someone else, but the difference is within ourselves. We are the product of our prevailing habits of thought. Check it out!! Check out your circumstances today and then check yesterday’s thoughts. See any correlation? As Ein-stein said, “Your thoughts today are tomorrow’s coming attractions.” In Proverbs you find, “As a man thinketh, so is he.” Every experience with which you meet has been built for you by your own interior thought proc-esses. The world without is merely a reflection of what you have acknowledged as true in your world within, so if the state of your health or finances is not all you desire, you must look within yourself for the cause. Regardless of what the condition is or how it seemed to have come about, its cause had to find place in your consciousness before it came into expression. There is no such thing as luck or chance; on the contrary, our lives are governed by law, by actual immutable principles that never vary. Law is in operation at all times, in all places, mighty, silent, fixed laws that underlie every human action, that bring to us with exact precision, the full measure of our thoughts. In a sense, there is nothing in all the universe but law; every tree that grows, every flower that blooms, every snowflake that falls, testifies to the operation of this great law.
September 2009 16 Evolving...
There is but one law, one principle, one cause, one source of power. We cannot change the law, but by understanding and cooperation we may bring ourselves into harmony with the law and let the law work with us, through us and for us. It is natural for us to be healthy and whole in mind and body, and for us to abound in all good. When we learn this truth and live in accord with the laws of our being, health and prosperity spring forth naturally and abundantly. The majority of people believe that peace and plenty on one hand, and poverty and sickness on the other, is somehow interwoven in divine providence. But, those who know the truth understand that life, health and abundance are a natural law of the uni-verse—thought is the active principle by which we are related to the things we need and desire. Thoughts are things. Thought causes vibration and sets in motion the Law of Mind. Everything has its beginning in mind, and as thought. This is mind in action, which produces form. Through this form we realize that thought is creative. Sally L. Ford is a writer, life coach and spiritual

Evolving... 17 September 2009
By Joann Atchity So, you have awakened, as though from sleep, to the awareness that you are unhappy and that you do not have what you want and are not liv-ing the way you want. Eckhart Tolle would congratulate you be-cause you have made the first and MOST impor-tant step to making lasting change. You have become “aware”. You now realize that where you are is not where you would like to be. So, a decision is made, you want your life to be differ-ent. You want to go in a different direction. What next? Thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of books have been written on self-help, on how to improve and to make positive change. So why is it so difficult? What keeps us stuck? How do we begin to move from where we are to where we would like to be? What usually happens is that we become very excited and energized with the new idea to make a change. We begin to say affirmations which are positive statements about what we’d like in our lives. We create a vision board, we meditate, we start to eat better, etc. At first we find it easy to flow along and start feeling really, really good. This feeling good is new and unfamiliar terri-tory. While it’s very nice, it doesn’t feel at all like home. It doesn’t feel “natural” or “normal”. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the wheels sort of come off the bus. We do or say things that are not at all in alignment with our new percep-tions and we very quickly fall back into old pat-terns. This creates the belief that we cannot make changes and perhaps do not even deserve to have what we want. This internal resistance to change is precisely the area where most of us completely derail and even give up, believing that where we are, is just our lot in life—just what life has dealt us. But it is the resistance that can actually be the clear signposts that you are making progress toward your intention. How so? Where we are in our lives is the product of our entire lifetime’s conditioning and program-ming. Yes, programming. We are taught that money doesn’t grow on trees, rich people must have sold their souls to become wealthy, only pretty girls have boyfriends, only special or lucky or favored people get what they want and worst of all, life is hard and struggle is normal. When we attempt to do things in a new way,
to see things in a new way, all of our program-ming will resist and then we do a really good job of maintaining the status quo. We are such good little computers and we run exactly as we have been programmed. It’s not that we don’t deserve what we’d like, it’s just not yet in our software to have it. Listening to our resistance is one of the best and easiest ways to find the old lines of code that no longer serve us so we can repro-gram them. We have within us, the power and ability to co-create our world, to rewrite our soft-ware to be exactly what we’d like. However, since we can’t format the disk and start over, this requires some patient and careful reprogram-ming so everything can keep running as we make our changes. In her wonderful book, You Can Heal Your Life, Louise Hay recommends that you define something you’d like in the form of an affirma-tion and say it into a mirror, speaking it into your own eyes. It is absolutely amazing what will come up. You may hear messages from within that say, “You don’t deserve what you’d like, you’re too fat, or too thin, or too stupid or whatever. Uncovering these hidden beliefs al-lows you to then reprogram the old lines of code into new ones that better serve you. Recently I heard about a weight loss program that encouraged their patients to lose a certain amount and then to stop losing weight and stay at a stable weight for a time. This was to allow their bodies to become accustomed to the new reality before moving on. This makes so much sense! They had time to allow for new program-ming. Let’s use a travel analogy. Let’s say you de-cide to travel from Kansas City to Austin. No one in your family has ever been there, but you have heard Austin is great and you’d like to check it out. You set off. You watch for signs along the way to make sure you are still on I-35. You watch the gas gauge and of course keep your eye on the road. The trip seems to be going well, the music on the radio is nice, the scenery is nice and this new direction feels really good. All of a sudden, you are overcome with a cer-tainty that you forgot to lock your front door, or forgot your cell phone or any of thousands of things seem to go wrong. You think, “I really need to go to the bathroom, did I just pass the rest area? Do I have enough gas to get to Okla-homa City? Oh my heavens, Oklahoma City? I don’t want to be in Oklahoma City!”
You begin to wonder, do I really want to go to Austin? It’s hot there and I don’t know anyone and they have fire ants… You get completely swept off course by your programming that would keep you back in KC. “Now that I think of it, Kansas City isn’t so bad. I may not be happy here, but I know people and things are familiar.” So you turn around and go home. This happens because we don’t recognize the “bumps” in the road as our prior condition-ing keeping us right where we are. It requires discipline to remain aware of our programming in order to replace it with new programming. Instead of being frustrated that you’ve only made it as far as Oklahoma, you can be excited that you are half way there. Revel in how far you have come. Remember, that success is a journey, not a destination; life is what happens along the way. Allow yourself to enjoy the ride. Dr. John Gray in his book Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus offers another perspective on the resistance that comes up when things are going well. He tells of being asked why, when things are going really well in our lives, we seem to fall apart reinforcing the belief that we are not good enough or don’t deserve good in our lives. What is actually happening, however, is that when we have come to a safe oasis, a quiet com-fortable place where we feel secure, then and only then, can we allow the scary, ugly stuff to rise to the surface and be processed away. This doesn’t mean we are on the wrong path, it means we are on the right one. The phrase “seeds of change” is so very im-portant to understand. Whenever you decide to move in a new direction, you first set an inten-tion, make a decision, or “plant a seed”. You know that seeds take time to germinate and to grow. You don’t plant a seed one day and have a harvest of produce the next day. Be patient, the Universe is, at this very mo-ment conspiring in your favor.

Resistance to Change
September 2009 18 Evolving...
By Carol Rydell and Rev. Dr. Gary Langston
We have just returned from the Amazon rain
forest deep within Peru. Most of our time was
spent on 15,000 pristine acres of primary rain
forest recently acquired for preservation by The
Heart of the Healer Foundation. It was truly an
exquisite experience! The natural world, in all
of her glory, welcomed and embraced us. The
river, ancient trees, monkeys, birds, plants, flow-
ers, the moon and the sun all participated in our
time there.
In this splendor it was clear to each of us how
everything within the jungle is constantly chang-
ing. There is always something growing while in
that same moment something else is dying. A tree
falls to the jungle floor and begins decaying
thereby providing rich nutrients for another tree
or plant to grow even as it provides a home to
forest creatures, fungus and millions of insects.
An animal killed and eaten becomes the nourish-
ment for others to thrive in a constant process of
death giving birth to new life. In the jungle, there
is no judgment about these cycles as it is all a
natural part of the life, death and rebirth myster-
ies. In the giving up of something, another some-
thing flourishes—it is all a part of the natural
cycles of life.
As humans, change occurs continually within
us on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual
levels. It is constantly happening outside of us
as well. We experience change within the rela-
tionships in our life, the families and communi-
ties we live in, the organizations we work with,
the world in which we live, as well as within our
beliefs and perceptions of life. In other words,
nothing is static. Yet, we tend to have judgment,
fear or difficulty with the natural cycles within
our own lives.
Many of us are currently experiencing intense
changes in our daily lives. These changes may
be experienced as a death process. However, we
would do well to remember that such “deaths”
as being laid off from a job or losing a home often
create the seeding for something new—whether a
new career, a change in that cycle of our life, a
new beginning, or a new way of being that we
would not have considered prior to the death of
the previous cycle. Now is a time for personal
and planetary renewal in all aspects of our daily
lives. These cycles or phases are calling upon us
to let go of the old ways of being and doing. We
are being prodded through the collapse of out-
moded systems such as the automotive industry,
the banking industry, or even the world economy
to culturally evolve. We are being called from
the inside to express ourselves in new ways on
the outside.

The Andean peoples of South America would
describe the change and time that we are cur-
rently going though as a Pachakuti. A Pachakuti
is literally defined as a “world turning” or the
turning over of time as we have known it to be.
This current cycle is intended as a time of great
transformation, assisting us in creating a new
world era of harmony with one another and with
nature.
With these significant changes we are all ex-
periencing in our lives, people, now more than
ever before, are looking for ways to feel safe and
grounded, to feel connected and not alone and to
find community.
Finding community, grounding yourself and
connecting doesn’t have to be complicated, al-
though we human beings tend to make it unneces-
sarily so. In fact it is actually quite simple. Cross
-cultural shamanic arts and indigenous wisdom
teachings, regardless of what tradition they are
from, are about getting back to nature. They are
about simplicity in all aspects of our daily lives.
They lead us to re-establishing our connection to
the unseen world, nature and all of life. They are
the path for reawakening our relationship with
all of life, seen and unseen. These shamanic arts
and wisdom teachings are about living from a
loving, centered place within our own hearts.
The practices from these teachings can be and
are quite simple. They can assist us in managing
the constant change that we live with while
keeping our physical, mental, emotional and
spiritual wellbeing in balance. They can assist
us in creating a new world era, a time of new con-
sciousness both within and without.
Here are some simple tips to help us engage a
new consciousness and nature’s abundance in
our lives:
Sit silently in nature
Tell someone that you love them
Talk to plants
Listen to the songs of the wind
Start and work a community garden
Spend time gazing at the moon and the stars
Feel the sun caressing you skin
Listen to the ancient wisdom of a rock
Be amazed about life
Reduce/reuse/recycle
Breathe consciously
Join and participate with organizations who are
doing work in the world that your heart resonates
with
Practice silence
Smile
You get the point. Be creative and find the
practices that work for you. Investigate, discern
and study what nourishes you at all levels of con-
sciousness. Most importantly, let your heart be
your guide. Be a friend, make a friend, daily. It
really is that simple. Be of service. Volunteer
your time to an organization that speaks to your
heart. One of the fastest and easiest ways to
bring balance in your own life is by assisting oth-
ers. When we give, we receive.
Long forgotten and ancient shamanic arts are
being remembered and called forward. These an-
cient teachings are being remembered in new
ways by a broader spectrum of people than ever
before. People are setting aside modern method-
ologies and going back to their ancient roots.
This does not mean that people are forsaking our
everyday conveniences but rather that we are
searching for new spiritual meaning in our lives.
Many times, cross-cultural shamanic arts are the
vessel that brings new spiritual meaning forward.
Practicing these simple truths is a way to awaken
our call for personal and planetary renewal. And,
in the process, indigenous cultures are being pre-
served and then taught as a way to help human-
kind restore ourselves and the earth.
Shamanic arts such as the Pachakuti Mesa
Tradition provide a solid foundation for trans-
forming and rebuilding lives. These offer a way
of releasing the past, for transforming the present
and helping create the future. Embracing such a
tradition allows each of us to live the mystery
while fully serving the earth and all of our rela-
“Transitions can be smooth if we are

of needs by delegating to others and let-
ting go of activities that no longer serve
us; by connecting with the divine

of gratitude, and by eating a simple
whole foods diet, spending time in na-

which all bring connection with the earth
and help to ground us.”

When this phrase surfaced in my mind,
I smiled at the sweet perfection of its
layered meanings and how it seemed
to be an accurate reflection of where I
am, where the world is and maybe
where you are, too? It's curious, this
expression we have—when we say
we're dying for something what we
really mean is that we have a desire for
it, like really want it!
Then there's the adage "grow or
die." And yet, when I think about the
cycles of growth, it seems to me the
first one is: dying, such as when a
flower drops its leaves and petals, be-
cause all the energy is going into the
new seed...or when we let go of some-
thing that is no longer in alignment
with what we are bringing forth.
So how do I reconcile these two ideas
about dying for something? First, I try
to recognize my own deep desire(s). In
my process, there are times when I feel
so overwhelmed or depressed, scared,
anxious or angry, and I think I just want
to check out. But when I follow this
thread further, I find that underneath is
a deeper desire not just to live, but to
be really alive! So I look around my life
and I acknowledge, sometimes with
brutal honesty, the things that aren't
really working, aren't healthy, aren't
very supportive of what I truly want. I
challenge myself to let go, to die to
what isn't working—to lay myself bare
and surrender to transformation.
As I'm writing this article, a storm is
brewing outside and I can't help but be
out in it. The wind is picking up and the
sky is becoming dark and dramatic. I
find myself drawn to the beauty and
excitement in the impending possibili-
ties, the break from normalcy. It's a
heightened sense of energy, like a
quickening, a promise that things will
never be the same. And, as much as
there is a part of me that is terrified of
change, another part of me is equally
and secretly glad for it.
I felt this same quickening as I lay
September 2009 20 Evolving…
next to my dying mother. Yes, most
certainly, things would never be the
same. In the midst of this shocking and
horrifying experience, I was also feeling
some kind of euphoric cosmic expan-
sion, a change at the cellular level and I
was having a mystical experience. In
the midst of this death and dying, life
was happening.
Death and loss have been great
teachers in my life and one of the
things I've learned is that swirling
around in the space of endings is also
the energy of new beginnings. It's rich
and powerful, but also paradoxical.
When a painting is begun, it is the de-
struction of the blank canvas; when a
baby is born, it is the end of a preg-
nancy; when a plant sprouts, it is the
death of the seed.
And when life brings me to this
space, either by my choice or an unex-
pected circumstance, if I can move
through it with some measure of pres-
ence and awareness, it stretches me. It
expands me beyond what I've known
myself to be; it asks me to hold more,
feel more, be more and pulls me beyond
"either/or" and into "both/and." This is
the energy of change, death, transition
and transformation.
When my nephew died, I was asked
to say a few words at the memorial.
The day before the service, feeling ma-
jor apprehension about what I could
possibly say, I noticed the rose bushes
out in the yard. After blooming, they
had died during a late freeze and been
cut way back, a strange sight for the
springtime. Upon closer inspection I
noticed little sprouts already forming. I
was struck by this life force; this pulsing
that seemed to be moving through
them and everything. No matter
whether the roses froze or felt the sting
of being cut back, this pulse was still
seeking a way to come to life through
them. For days following his death, I
continued to feel this pulse, like the
heartbeat of the universe—silent, yet
deafening. It didn't stop my tears or
take away the tragedy, but it made
itself known, suggesting to me that no
death stops the divine impulse of life.
And I wondered, if this pulse is al-
ways moving through us, are we foster-
ing it? Are we stifling it? Are we even
aware of it?
For a while now I've been feeling
that some things in my life are coming
to an end, pondering what's next, feel-
ing like "now is the time." But for what?
I only know that the old is falling away,
but the new isn't quite clear yet. I think
we are all going through some version
of this, individually and collectively.
And even though it's uncomfortable to
be in a space of uncertainty, full of loss
and turmoil, experiencing a full gamut
of what this realm offers: fear, excite-
ment, frustration, liberation, madness,
anticipation, constriction, expansion,
mystery, magic, all of the above and
more—it all seems to be an integral
part of the process of birthing some-
thing new.
Recently I came across the Howard
Thurman quote, "Don't ask what the
world needs. Ask what makes you
come alive, and go do it. Because what
the world needs is people who have
come alive." Yes, this is the world I
want to co-create and live in, a soul-full
one where each of us is alive to our own
deepest desires and purpose and au-
thentically expressing them—truly liv-
ing from the inside out.
I can only do my small piece in the
bigger picture, to follow my own inter-
nal compass. What I do know is that I
no longer want to feel half-hearted
about work or relationships. I no longer
want to wake up to the stress of how to
make ends meet or how to complete
the never-ending "to do" list. And so I
ask death to come at my own bidding. I
want to die to that which no longer
serves me. I want to die to the beliefs
and patterns that keep me stuck in my
insecurities and mediocrity—to die to
the part of me that is afraid to really
live. So yes, I could say my life is in
chaos and shambles. I could say I'm
letting go of things and places I've
loved and adored to make space for
something new and even unimagined.
And I could say I'm cutting myself way
back, like the rose bush, so I can feel
the rush of life force pulsing through
me even more deeply, seeking new
ways to come into expression. I'm of-
fering myself up for transformation and
yes, I am dying to come alive.
How about you?

Evolving… 21 September 2009
Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) Happy birthday Virgo! The Uni-verse is pushing you, which is un-comfortable—but it’s the best birthday present you could have. Be willing to rid yourself of old habits, negative thought patterns and destructive relationships. If people or situations get torn away, view the loss as a positive change!! The freer you are, the happier you’ll be. Embracing change will open you to new career and rela-tionship opportunities. Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Pay attention to your dreams since your soul is giving you clues about what changes to make so you’ll feel more balanced emotionally and physically. Also, ask questions in your daily meditation and look for answers throughout the day. A deep karmic piece is shifting now that will help you be able to achieve an important goal. Map out plans this month and make your moves in October.
Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Let more people into your life and into your heart. Trust is an impor-tant theme for all Scorpios, and the astrological energies that are hap-pening now are quite rare! Please use this time to meditate and ex-amine why you hold people at a distance. Accept social invitations, even if you don’t feel interested. Be more present to your kids or pets. Get out of your emotional comfort zone!
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Use your meditation time to for-give people that seem to be in the way of achieving your goals. It’s important to stay emotionally bal-anced at work right now. Even if things are getting to you, take some deep breaths and meditate about your next steps. It’s best to
plan now and make changes in October. There might be shifts with superiors or policies that make situations easier for you. Hang in there and don’t make rash decisions or actions!
Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Surround yourself with people who recognize your personal power. It’s not egotistical to be aware of your spiritual strengths! People who see your light often recognize their own and live in an authentic and ethical way. Medi-tate on your gifts and ask how you can best apply them. You might receive guidance to change jobs, move, or shift your relationships in some way. Don’t let fear stop you from living your truth!
Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) If you’re having problems with trust, try meditating more. As you grow spiritually, your ego gets very challenged because your soul becomes more powerful. Aquar-ians fear the loss of individuality and uniqueness, and can pull back from blending with others. Extra meditation helps overcome your ego’s defensiveness. You’ll feel safer about bonding with others. Self-esteem increases as you see how valuable you are.
Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Open yourself to new possibilities! Don’t let the negative voices in your head limit you. Your soul is unlimited and is here to grow and evolve. Set boundaries with critical or negative people. You need to be surrounded by those who believe in their own evolution, as well as yours! Meditation gets you in touch with your power. Make a drastic or exciting change in your outer appearance to symbolize that the inner you is changing.
Aries (March 21 – April 19) Please be very gentle with your-self! Unexpressed anger and frus-tration can build up in your sub-conscious, causing you to take ag-gression out on your body. Some signs might be eating or drinking too much; exercising too strenu-ously; working too late; denying yourself sleep. Be sure to meditate to be able to forgive and release stressful situations. For now, stick with gentle yoga, slow walking or deep breathing. Solutions to rela-tionship and work problems will come when you give your body a break!
Taurus (April 20 – May 20) People appreciate you so much more than you realize! It sounds silly, but make a list of friends and be grateful for their support and love. Make another list of your interests and hobbies. You are fas-cinating and cool! Also remember your soul is guiding you and never forgets about you! Changes with work are coming, as are ways to be freer from stress. Stay posi-tive so you’ll clearly see the steps you need to take when they ap-pear next month!
Gemini (May 21 – June 20) If you’re unhappy at work, please don’t allow yourself to gossip at the office. Changes are happening and situations will be better soon. It’s best not to cause a new issue in the meantime! Instead, talk with a trusted friend who’s removed from those who trouble you. Medi-tate to stay emotionally and men-tally centered. Exercise to release pent up aggression. Let your part-ner know about your frustrations so s/he doesn’t take your moodi-ness personally.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Ponder your ideas about God. Do you see God as critical parent? Do you see God as a distant figure that doesn’t have time for your needs? Meditation helps create a true bond with your soul and with the Divine. You’ll find relation-ships improve because you can feel truly present to others as you release your fear of judgment. For-give negative experiences with parents that might keep you from seeking support from God and create isolation.
Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Don’t jump to conclusions this month. Mercury is retrograde, which means it’s easy to have mis-understandings that will cause unnecessary stress. Believe that those close to you are trustworthy. Treat yourself to a massage, bub-ble baths or a spa day. When you feel pampered you’re more grounded. Meditate and ask to see your problems from alternate viewpoints so you don’t get stuck in narrow thoughts that frustrate you. Options and solutions will come next month if you prepare an open mind now.

INGRID BUSCH, CREATOR OF
GRACENOTES
Authentic Women Conversation Series Ingrid was increasingly troubled by tech-
nology's role in distancing us from au-thentic relationships. Voicemail, email, texting and tweeting were poor substi-tutes for "showing up" with a hand, a
shoulder or an understanding tear. After losing her job in the fall of 2008 she
found her purpose, her "mighty cause" by lacing technology with care and compas-sion. GraceNotes powerfully connect us to our family and friends experiencing
major challenges, those difficult times in life, when you want to be a thoughtful,
embracing presence. Sample cards will be available. 11:30pm-1:00pm House of Menuha.. $20 Lunch provided. RSVP: (816)444-2434 or www.menuha.org
