Thoughts from Ground Levelo you set an alarm in the morning? I wonder

how many alarms are set to go off at 6:00am or6:15am or 6:30am? Maybe a few are set to odd

times like 5:48am or 7:03am. Someone who has to getup for a third shift might set the alarm for 3:15 in theafternoon.

At our house, we set an alarm during the week to getup for school, but I am usually awake before it goes off.

We dont set any alarm on Saturday, its the only day atour house no one has to get up and go anywhere. Itsgood Sabbath time for us. On Sunday mornings I dontnormally set the alarm either. I always wake up sometimearound 6:00am. On Easter day, however, I do set the

alarm. Since I need to get to the church early that day forthe sunrise service, I set the alarm for 5:30am. The otherfifty-one Sundays I just wake up. Ithasnt always been this way.

When I was in college and in myfirst life as an engineer, I was devoted tothe alarm clock. I can remember wakingup, looking at the time and thinkingsomething like, O good, I have fourmore minutes before the alarm goesoff. Do you know that happy moment?

And that doesnt even count the two

cycles I had built in for the snoozebutton. How many of you use the snooze

button? I would be curious about thepercentage of people who press itonce twice three timesfourtimes.

I kept on using my alarm clock in seminary and for acouple years after I was ordained. And then somethinghappened and I stopped using it. That something wasKatherine Grace Martin. I stopped using my alarm clockafter she was born. Have any of you had a similarexperience? Of course to some degree she became ouralarm clock, and would, frankly, go off at uneven, unscheduled, unpredictable timesand of course thereis no snooze button on an infant.

Katherine was a natural alarm clock because shesbeen an early riser for almost all of her eight years on theplanet. We think she got that from me. I have good, ifnot sleepy, memories of getting up with her while it wasstill dark and the house was quiet in that grey pre-dawnlight. She must have mentioned something about this to

Jonah, who is beginning to show signs of also beingactive during those early morning hours.

At some point after Katherine was born I realized I

was no longer using my trusty alarm clock, the one that

had been at my bedside for many years. I was waking upearly and getting up. Sometimes it was because of achild, and sometimes I was just waking up. Maybe I was

getting some of that from parenthood and some of thatfrom my dad. I dont remember my dad using an alarmclock, and he was always an early riser.

I do have a point to all of this. With the turn of thecalendar from August to September, an alarm is goingoff in the church. It actually goes off every year at thistime. The alarm is signaling the beginning of theprogram year of the church. On September 9 a coupleof events will mark this beginning. We will return to twoservices, and new Sunday school classes. The alarm issignaling that its time to get involved in all that ishappening in the church. This year its signaling a fewthings more

An alarm is going off to signal that our summerdreaming is pointing us toward some veryexciting dreams for us to get involved within the months ahead. Weve had two after-church congregational lunches and theSession has heard from many of you aboutyour sense of our long dream list. We willbe spending a lot of time praying anddiscerning where God is leading us withthose dreams.

An alarm is going off to signal thatyour church family is getting ready to begin

a great fall of living out our mission to worship God, study the Scripture, andpractice the teachings of Jesus.

An alarm is going off to signal thatyour presence in the life of the churchmakes a difference. Recently someone

shared with me that she didnt see the need to come tochurch because, as she put it, I can worship Godanywhere. I dont have to be in church to worship. Idont disagree with what she said, but heres how Iresponded to her comment: Okay, but dont you missthe body of Christ? She said, No. Her answer

saddened me. Personal devotion, wherever that happensfor you, is truly important, but its never a substitute fortime with the body of Christ, the church. God calls ustogether to be the body of Christfrom infant on upand we miss out when we neglect the assembly. To besure, the assembly suffers too.

An alarm is going off. God is calling us into theseamazing fall months. I cant wait for all that God hasplanned for Pisgah Church. Of course, your pastor issupposed to write things like that, but in all honesty, itstrue.

    Grace and peace, Jon

Pisgah Talent Show and PicnicArticle and Photos Submitted by Lisa Johnson

The Almost Annual Pisgah Talent Show andCommunity Club Picnic was a big hit on Saturday,

August 11. Gathering on the grounds outside the Academy Building on a warm but not unpleasant

evening, this years Talent Show featured eighteencrowd-pleasing performances. Jud Davis, naturalcomedian and superb Master of Ceremonies, started andended the evening with laughter. Jud was complimentedby Lantz Kindred on drums. The pair didnt miss a beat(pun intended!). In case you missed the festivities, hereis a review of the featured performances.

First up was Linda Jones conducting the Bell Choirin a musical rendition of Joseph and the Coat, narratedby Abe Fosson. The next act was Melanie Burrier with aflute solo whose lovely notes floated over the crowd inthe evening air. Sam Clark boldly took the microphoneand sang, The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow in aclear, sweet voice. (He was given moral support by hissister, Sarah). Still home for summer break, MarthaPrewitt entranced the crowd with a beautiful vocal soloentitled, Think of Me. Taking the piano by storm wasKendall Johnson playing a lively piano piece calledForest Dance.

We are blessed at Pisgah to have a tremendouslytalented choir. And in the event that we forget toacknowledge them, the Men of the Choir let us knowhow important they are with a song by the same title. Both the men and women stood together for an upliftingsong titled, Side by Side. The next act was quite a

crowd-pleaser. Missie Hill and Rachel Baston tap-danced their way into our hearts to the tune of SplishSplash complete with tub, towel and turquoise blueshower caps! Next in line was the father/daughter duoof Lantz and Sarah Kindred on drums followed by Leslie

James on guitar with a typical mothers lament in thesong, Small Fry. The next act featured Abe Fossonon guitar, aided by grand daughter, Olivia Bruner. Abesang a song about Remembering just as he wasforgetting to keep a lunch date with his lady friend(played by Sue Henry).

The next two young men kept both the computer

savvy and the computer un-savvy in stitches with amodern Abbot and Costello Whos On First-type skitabout a guy trying to talk with a computer salesman.

You just had to be there to appreciate the humor! Thenext group to get a smile was the Pisgah ChurchEducation Committee dressed suspiciously like raisins infancy hats grooving to Heard it Through theGrapevine while shamelessly advertising the beginningof the Sunday School season.

In lieu of an intermission, a short break was taken inorder to choose the winner of the door prize, a Kentuckyblanket, which was donated by Louise Lagrew. The

winner of this blanket was one of the youngest members

in attendance- Baby Brody Mancuso! Rounding out theevening was a Youth Group skit about a Pet StoreComplaint Department, a piano solo by Olivia Bruner, ahusband/wife duet to the song, You Raise Me Up byFrank and Carolyn Snipp (accompanied by Linda Jones)and a final and appropriate end to the evening from the

women of the choir singing, Bye-Bye Blackbird. The Talent Show is a wonderful way to showcase

the talent at Pisgah. Thanks to all the performers for

sharing and to the appreciative crowd for theirparticipation. A big word of thanks to Jud Davis andLantz Kindred for their awesome team work, to Scout

Troop 1784 who helped with set up, clean up andpassing out programs and door prize tickets, and to AbeFosson and the Stewardship Committee who organizedthe program.

Pisgah Mens Study GroupThe Mens Study Group will kick off the season by

taking a field trip on Saturday, September 15, 2007. At9:00a.m. they will meet at the Family Christian BookStore, 127 W Tiverton Way, to listen to a one hourintroduction of Max Lucados newly released book,

3:16 The Numbers of Hope. We hope you will join us.

website (Google: Family Christian Stores). For furtherinformation, call Jim Rodgers (873-9411).

Pisgah RecyclesThe Woodford County Recycle Center has providedus with a large green herbie curbie container andplenty of blue bags for recycling. They will also pick upthe recycling once a week or more if necessary. This is agreat service they provide at no charge. Please becomeaware of what you are throwing in the trash can. Can itgo into a blue recycle bag instead? Lets all becomemore conscious about recycling. There is moreinformation on what can be recycled in the kitchen. Ifyou have any questions, please contact Ann Hayes (873-2197).

Property Committee Update The property committee met on Thursday, August

    23. The main topic of discussion centered on theSanctuary and Academy Building roofs. After the twomajor hail storms of the summer, they were inspectedand significant damage was found. The Manse had no

visible damage, probably because of the trees thatsurround it and the direction of the storms. Aninsurance claim has been filed and the committee islooking into roof replacement.

Other projects that are planned for the near future:

building a stone (flat surface) path between Sanctuaryand Academy Buildings, replacing existing stone walkand expanding in front of the Sanctuary, starting a treeplanting program around the church property, researching options and cost for the repair and/orreplacement of the Academy Chapel floor sub floor

which is deteriorating.Projects that are currently being worked on or

started this fall: repair of outside window sills of Academy windows some of which are rotting away, installation of additional lighting in Academy Buildingmain rooms, a recycling program, restoration of Pisgah

yard sign.Adopt-a-Project or a Pisgah Repair Affair TheProperty Committee is in search of additional help and

volunteers for a developing list of projects (mostlysmall). Such projects include: painting bathrooms, painting kitchen area, repairing exit doors, power

washing and sealing back deck, etc. Many of these are aone or two person job. The thought here is that it iseasier for one or two people to come over and work ontheir schedules instead of a single work day. Moreinformation to come.

Picture Directory UpdateGood News! First Choice is scheduled to ship the

Fall Adult Bible Study ClassUnveiling the Book of Daniel

In the O.T., the Book ofDaniel is placed after Isaiah,

Jeremiah, and Ezekiel as the fourth of the MajorProphets. In the Hebrew Bible, Daniel is placed notamong the Prophets, but in the Writingswith suchbooks as Psalms and Proverbs. This tells us somethingimportant about the Book of Daniel and that is that theancient scribes considered not strictly a prophetic book. Many contemporary biblical scholars consider the Bookof Daniel as a book ofapocalypse.

Join Ed Clark and Sarah Cox in the choir room as we explore together this fascinating book of the Old
