Bits and Peaces. fr. Greg Corrigan A Catholic Response to Racism via Zoom An important conversation for all! Sept. 30, Oct. 14 & 28, Nov. 11, 7-8:30 p.m. "Anti-Racism: A Catholic Response," Zoom forum sponsored by St. Catherine of Siena and Resurrection Parishes. Participants should obtain a copy of the book "Racial Justice and the Catholic Church" by Fr. Bryan Massingale before the forums. To register, call (302) 633-4900 or Fr. John Hynes at [email protected]. A link will be sent for each meeting. Questions are powerful things. Questions elicit answers in their likeness. It’s hard to respond to a simplistic question with anything but a simplistic answer; it’s hard to rise above a combative question. But it’s hard to resist a generous question. We can ask questions that inspire dignity and honesty, and revelation. Krista Tippett What do you want in a parish? What do you bring to a parish? What does a parish bring to others? We Shape the Future It seems to me that we need to recognize that to develop the best humanity, the best spirit, the best community, there needs to be practices of exploring. How do we do that? How do we work together? How do we talk together in ways that will open up our best capacities and our best gifts? Vincent Harding

Peace to you, fr. Greg Corrigan

Taking It Home Deacon John

Although we usually imagine, as our first reading suggests, that God's ways are not our ways, we still often make assumptions about God's ways. And when we make these assumptions, we usually assume that God pretty much works according to the way that we work. We assume for instance that the way God works is in accord with our sense of fairness. And our sense of fairness is that those who deserve to get something because they have made the effort and done the work, should justifiably get what they deserve. On the other hand, those who fail to make the effort, should also get what they deserve, which is nothing. This idea of "just deserts" is essentially our sense of fairness; our way of saying what is right and just; after all isn't God about being fair and just? Unfortunately, God is always more than we humans can imagine. So in our system of "just deserts," we believe that God should treat us appropriately. If I do everything that I think God wants me to do, like attend mass, keep the commandments, pray and obey then God should reward me with entrance into the kingdom of heaven. And not only should God reward me with entrance into the kingdom of heaven, God should protect and bless me for the good life that I lead. But if I fail to do what God wants of me then I truly should not deserve to expect God's favor. But does God really act the way we do according to our sense of "just deserts?" The gospel parable that we hear this weekend of the last hired servants just might blow away our sense of God acting according to our ways; our ways of "just deserts." What we

think of as fair and just, just might not be the ways of God. Instead this gospel should give us a whole new perspective on the ways in which God acts with us. What Jesus is really trying to tell us is about our relationship with God. And what Jesus is saying about that relationship is that entry into the kingdom is not about "just deserts," did I deserve it. No one and that is absolutely no one, is owed eternal life in union with God. To think otherwise is to suppose that you can work your way to heaven. And you can’t. Instead the kingdom is a matter of assent. When given the opportunity, did I accept God's offer to do the work of the kingdom, which is helping God in the building up of that kingdom now here on earth.

The whole point of the parable is not to look at it from our perspective, the perspective of what we think is just and fair, but from God's perspective. Because when we can see it from God's perspective, we just might be able to see that God, as the owner of the vineyard wants us, regardless of the hour, to do the work of the vineyard. And the work of the vineyard is the

building up of creation. Therefore, the wages we receive are not the reward, but the work itself, which is our joy in being able to contribute to the completion of creation. The problem of seeing the parable from our perspective, which is the deserving model, is that such an approach leads to self-justification. It all depends on me. And when everything depends on me, grace as God's free gift becomes a matter of merit; did I do what was necessary to save myself, after all I am a sinner? But God does not see us as sinners. God sees us as the good people God created, which is why God calls us in the first place and why the call comes always and whenever we are ready to hear it. The problem with the merit approach is the way in which we think we can manipulate and control God. God is at my beck and call. But grace is simply grace, God's free gift. It is God's free choice as owner of the vineyard to offer it to anyone at anytime. This may not always be just and fair in our own particular worlds, but it is God's nature as God because God loves what God has created. The bottom line is that salvation is not based on our standards, the standards of just deserts and merit, but on God's infinite mercy and love. God is calling each one of us at any hour on any day because God is responding to our need, which is the need to be called out of our way of thinking, which is that of undeserving sinners, and into God's goodness and loving embrace. This way of thinking does go against our pattern of human thinking about our relationship with God, but it will also most certainly deepen that relationship with the God who is always near to all who call upon him.
