Leonardo Julian Rossi was born in Cecina, Italy and now lives and works in Berlin. !In the recent works by Rossi, he experiments with different techniques and tries to capture moments from both the past and present. His inspiration for this beautiful Bacchus oil painting has been found in the exploration of the perverse and dissolute side of Berlin. !Bacchus is represented by city religions as the protector of those who do not belong to conventional society and thus symbolizes everything which is chaotic, dangerous and unexpected, everything which escapes human reason. !Here Bacchus, the god of wine and ritual madness is set in the darkened city of an ominous and dissolute Berlin landscape.

Hector de Gregorio's  creative process involves a range of highly developed skills, from inventing a narrative around the character, dressing / undressing them and photographing his subject, to painting and varnishing the image. Hector, a former London YoungMasers Art Prize winner, reinvents historical paintings and through his process makes them look like weathered, 500 year old works.

Each image Hector creates involves extensive research and hundreds of hours of costume making, photography, digital imaging and hand-finishing. His approach to portraiture is entirely inspired by the Old Masters who painted kings and heroes to tell the stories of their conquests and glory. Generals became semi-gods and brides-to-be went through the arduous process of beautification. The artist manifests the glory of his modern characters, which together form an improbable yet seductive theatre of glamour and fantasy. Other influences include his mother, who was a dressmaker and taught a young de Gregorio how to design and make clothes, and his Catholic upbringing, which seeded a further interest in religious and devotional art from all religions.

Hector de Gregorio has exhibited widely, with exhibitions in London, Berlin, Milan, New York, Miami and Chicago. His stylistically modern portraiture is held in the collections of Lady Victoria Conran, Mehmet Omer Koc and Theo Fennell.

In these artworks currently on display in ‘Saints & Sinners’ at The Ballery, Hector has portrayed international cult figures Ernesto Tomasini and Othon. Ernesto and Othon, both London based artists, have performed together all over Europe and have collaborated with the likes of Marc Almond, Antony and the Johnsons, Derek Jarman and Bruce LaBruce.

Andrea Galad. !“I find the world of Saints and Martyrs very strong and inspiring; how people killed and glorified for their faith. I love how in the past they were celebrated with gold and beauty in a kind of celebration of violence and death mixed with passion and faith. The saints exposed now at the Ballery are just some of my favourite ones, i imagined them as realistic as possible as if i were there with my camera centuries ago”. !‘I didn’t grow up in a religious environment, only my grannies were incredibly devoted to the saints and the Virgin Mary. Having an interest for art history i am inspired to imitate the same decorative styles, putting halos and wings where i think they are needed; these symbols praise my characters and making them divine, like Holy Monsters!”

Stanka Koleva, b. 1982 Bourgas, Bulgaria. Lives and works in Berlin. In 2000 Stanka Koleva took up photography in her hometown with B. Penkov as her tutor. She prints her images herself by using the classic gelatin silver process and has presented her works in individual and group exhibitions in Bulgaria and other countries in Europe.  In her own words she explains the concept behind her work: “I believe art is the purest way to understanding and depicting our inner selves, as well as the aspects of cosmic life. Human nature and mutual relations are aspects on which I rely to do my work, along with intuition, which is the most important part of an artistic act.
