• Production of formation sand is one of the oldest problems in oil and gas industry.

• Sand control refers to managing/minimizing sand production during petroleum production.

• If you try to reach zero sand production it will in many cases put very high restrictions on the field production potential, which will lead to loss of revenue and possibly put projects on hold or abandoned.

• So you have to accept sand production, but manage the integrity of your production systems through design where at least these two factors are important:

• Erosion allowance on your production system/piping

• Sand production handling

• Sand and fine particles produced with oil and gas can cause

• well plugging

• production downtime

• expensive repairs

• erosion and wear of production equipment

• and potentially loss of containment (serious safety risk).

• Sand control can be active and passive.

• Active sand control is the most common and implies the use of mechanical devices, typically a pipe with different types of slots or a screen

• Passive sand control is based on oriented perforation or controlled drawdown

Intrusive, most common to use erosion probes

• Erosion probes wear, has to be replaced

• One spot/place, can not be moved. If put in the ‘wrong’ place it will give wrong readings

• Integrity of the production system – you need to drill a hole in the pipe and do welding. Has to remove pressure from the system or use high pressure tool to replace probe

• The erosive elements are normally made of materials with erosive properties similar to the pipework

• Often assumed that the particles are homogenously distributed over the pipe cross section, which may not be the case

UltraMonit® SEC Erosion Monitoring Non intrusive erosion monitoring using Single Element Pulse/Echo Transducers

• Non-Intrusive• Direct wall thickness measurement of pipe wall• Not sensitive to pipe wall thickness• Works through solid coatings (FBE, 3LPP, PE, etc.)• Possible to separate pipe wall front and back wall echo’s

when used on coating.• Does not discriminate between erosion and corrosion• Embedded temperature transducers enables temperature

compensation

• No need for calibration:- speed of sound in steel is known - time of flight is measured using a crystal

• Fixed sensors combined with advanced signal processing detects wall loss of less than .1 mills (2.5 micrometres)

• Free forming sensor matrix to suit corrosion/erosion phenomena

Pulse-echo:

𝑑 =𝑡 ∙ 𝑐

2c – speed of sound in steelt – time d – wall thickness

UltraMonit® SEC Erosion Monitoring

• Based on an array of single element Pulse/Echo Transducers

• Provide real time online wall thickness data

• Subsea clamp with sealing

• Pressure compensated

• Retrieveable datalogger

• Can be stand alone system with batteries or connected to subsea control system

All installation in a choke has to be done dry, before deploying the choke subsea

To cover the bend thoroughly it is necessary to mark the position of each sensor cassette

Absolute wall thickness

Green color- thicker pipe

Blue color – thinner pipe

This is according to specifcations of the bend due to the production method.

Absolute wall thickness measurements performed was according to wall thickness measured by producer of bend

17

Erosion pattern

Green color – no, or very little, erosion

Blue color – highest wall loss

Reading the blue colors we find the erosion to be according to the pattern expected from flow analysis

Erosion vs flow

Blue curve – wall thickness trend curve

Green curve – flow rate

You can see some correlation between flow rate and erosion, but the flow rate measurmeents has some uncertainty so it can not be 100% confirmed.

With confirmed data from both erosion monitoring and flow rate this tool could be used to adjust flow rate to find swet spot of production compared to erosion.

• Sand/particle production is a problem for the industry

• There are several ways of controlling and monitoring sand production and erosion

• When monitoring erosion it is important to monitor the correct locations and get good areal coverage

• UltraMonit SEC® erosion monitoring has been installed and used with good results

• UltraMonit SEC® intrument will give high accuracy (2,5 µm resolution) and good areal coverage, which will give valuable input to production engineers
