Tips on having a successful Conference Call
Planning ahead:
Plan to be in a location with reduced background noise (consider pets,
televisions, constructions etc.). Background noise can be disruptive to
the facilitator, as well as the other session clients.
Plan to use the washroom before the call to ensure your full participa-
tion in the session. You don’t want to miss out on anything.
Maybe have a pad of paper and pen near you to write down notes; and
If you are using a cordless phone or a cellphone, ensure that your bat-
teries are fully charged, or that your charger is nearby.
Be on time: In order for our programs and services to run smoothly for
facilitators and our volunteers and clients, we ask that all participants be
on time.
Respect: Be respectful of the facilitator/volunteer and other clients. It is
important for clients to feel that they are in a safe environment, being treat-
ed with respect and dignity, and are a valued member of the sessions.
Rude, disruptive, and disrespectful behaviour will not be tolerated.
Use the me/not me rule: During discussion sessions it is important to
remember to give everyone a chance to speak. Some may not have as
much to say, but it is important for everyone to get the opportunity to
speak. This includes making sure to not talk over or disrupt someone while
they are speaking.
Mindfulness: Be mindful that everyone has a story, a background, and
maybe a different way of looking at the world, and/or different communica-
tion styles.
