JANUARY 2020 NSW Senior Results

Glenmore Cup

Mc Millan, Mc Millan win at Glenmore Heritage Glenmore Heritage ran a combined Vardon and SOOM event with David Mc Millan’s son Justin, winning the Glenmore Cup in a playoff with a fine score of 70. The Mc Millan’s capped off a great day with father David, firing a great score of 74 off the stick on a course that measured 6400m from the plates to win the seniors nett event with 71 from Keith Clark who was runner-up with a nett 72.

In the scratch section, although no scratch SOOM trophy was awarded, the scores were, David Mc Millan 74, David McClelland (Wyong) 76, Brad Weir (Glenmore Heritage), Shane Floyd (Cromer) and Andrew Waters (Lynwood) 78. In the nett section SOOM which was awarded, the scores were David Mc Millan (Twin Creeks) 71, Keith Clark 72, Brad Weir and Andrew Waters 73 and Greg Climpson and Michial Woods 74.

Unfortunately, there was no seniors scratch awards and no over 65’s awards, as well as, the seniors played from the same plates as did the Vardon players which made for a long course at 6400m! Feedback from many players said they would not come back and play in the event again next year if the Golf NSW SOOM guidelines are not used.

Forster-Tuncurry Seniors

Brewer wins SOOM event at Forster-Tunrcurry

A record field of 127 male and female senior golfers teed up in the Forster-Tuncurry Seniors around a superb Tuncurry course. For Ken Brewer (Lynwood) this was his first visit to this beautiful seaside links course. He said he didn’t play that well with a lost ball and a penalty but as with all good players, he knows how to get the ball in the hole.

His score of one over par 73 finished one shot ahead of Warren “Snowny” Gorton (Hawks Nest) who posted a 74. In third place on a count-back with 76 was 2019 Australian Seniors Champion David Bagust (Port Macquarie). Also on 76 was Wayne Maybury (Waratah) and local player Bob Angus.

In the Men’s Over 65’s event, Bob Angus won the scratch with 76 while Paul Kringas took out the nett with 69.

In the men’s nett event, local player Paul Kringas carded a 69 nett from another local Ian Gresham with nett 70. Third place in the nett went to another local Geoff Proctor on 72 on a c/b.

A near full field teed up in the Harrington Waters SOOM with John Osborn (Mudgee) leading home a classy field with a great 1 under par round 71 to just pip a hot Warren Colfax (Murwillumbah), who also won the latest QSOOM event at Palmer Colonial. Warren shot a neat par round of 72 to take the runner-up prize.

Tied for third place on 73 was last years champ, John Karren (Mona Vale and Manly), along with David Mc Millan (Twin Creeks) and Ken Brewer (Lynwood).

In the nett event, David Doig won with a neat 69 to beat John Osborn on a count back. John Karren was tied third with 71 along with Gary Cush, Bob Baxter and David Mc Millan.

Peter Budden and his team must be thanked for their superb running of the event plus the great hospitality shown to all players.

A chance meeting, a great outcome!

Here is a great story of golfing adventures from Port Kembla’s, Michial Woods. I asked Michial to write about his adventures for our next newsletter after hearing his story whilst playing a game together at Camden GC. Here it is: “ 2017 Gold Coast seniors, I am drawn to play with Raymond Tan, from Malaysia. After a few holes I knew he was a good player and very competitive, but his friendliness and character was far better. We played the round and only finished a few shots apart, after the round he invited me for drinks with his friends also from Malaysia around 10 of them.

Next day we are drawn together again, the banter starts and it is fun. I thought this level golf would be nerve racking, not with these guys. Again we caught up after the game and his friends and family were awesome, they stayed another 2 weeks and stayed in contact with me.

A month later Ray contacts me and invites me over (or maybe I mentioned it to him), anyway a month later I am in Malaysia staying at his house playing TPC Kuala Lumpur (Ray won the 1997 club championship their). Saujana, Kelab and Ray were all calling me, Kwai loh (which means, white boy in Malaysian). In KL, they don’t have competitions, they just play between their friends for money, after that week, my pockets were much lighter.

I am eating soft boiled eggs and Jok (porridge) for breakfast, Bhakutah (pork) lunch and chicken feet for dinner. The chicken feet they said they have never seen a Kwai loh eat!

There hospitality was amazing and they were taking me everywhere possible in a week, it went so fast.

A couple of funny moments come to mind, we played golf and went for a shower afterwards in Royal Selangor GC which is a very prestigious club. Ray finished before me and was waiting outside, he walked to a large glass door and tried to open it but thought it was stuck. So I pulled much harder to open it and ripped the magnetic electric door opener off, I did not see the green exit button right beside me.

Then we went to a bar near Rays house, after a few beverages . All the cars there are Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini a very expensive area. I then visited the men’s toilet, do my thing.

Page 7: SENIOR GOLFING NSW · the Forster-Tuncurry Seniors around a superb Tuncurry course. For Ken Brewer (Lynwood) this was his first visit to this ... Here is a great story of golfing

I saw a hand Dyson hand dryer, so proceeded to dry my hands, but this dryer had an electronic counter at least I thought that’s what is was. So every time I put my hands in the counter would go down one number. I went out to tell the boys that hand dryer is weird it counts how many times you put your hands in, they all burst into laughter. It was seconds, I just happened to be putting my hands in every second. They all do the counting every time someone goes to the bathroom now!

After a great week of golf plus go cart racing at their sons track and sightseeing it was all over. Ray informed me next time I come he will show me more things.

A year later (2018) after keeping in contact he invites me again for 2 weeks, so off I go this time. We played at Penang ,Royal Perak, and Rompin. We then went sail fishing at Si Rusa, sailing on their catamaran, on the trip to Penang we stayed at his mate, Peppe’s holiday apartment, which is a 4000sq ft ,20th floor 6 bedroom mansion with unbelievable views.

Then the most spectacular place I have ever seen. We went to Bentong, which is up above the clouds into a 6 story, 12 bedroom holiday house. The most beautiful gardens and view you have ever seen, Ray’s dad who was a property developer built it 4 years ago but passed away 6 months before it was finished. His family want to keep this place forever and I would also, it is straight out of a Hollywood movie!

After the 2 weeks, Ray asked me to stay on for another 2 weeks (twisted my arm).

This family that offered me an experience I would never have had, all this from a game of golf!

I want to thank Ray, Selena his wife, their boys, William, Weiron, Leon and Zen. Great friends, Peppe and Elsie, Siang and his great golfing partner, Jay Lyn Wong, Sonny and Penne Soh.

I am returning the favour this Xmas as Ray and his wife are coming back to Australia and this time I will return the hospitality.”

GAME IMPROVEMENT with Darryl Hearsch

5-balls, 5 distances putting challenge

1. Mark putts at 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 ft from a hole, in a straight line. 2. Place one ball at the 5ft mark, two balls at the 10ft mark, three at the 15ft mark, four at the 20ft mark, and five

at 25ft. 3. The goal is to make one putt from each distance with the balls allotted, starting with the 5 footer. If you fail to

make at any distance, start over! 4. See how many rounds you need to pass the test!

10-ball short game test

You will need just one ball and an open green.

1. You are going to hit 10 different shot game shots (5 pitches, 3 chips, 2 bunkers) and each shot needs to be different.

2. After you hit each shot pace of the distance to the hole. 3. A missed green = 50ft and a made shot = -10ft. 4. After hitting all 10 shots total up the number of feet to get your total score and record it in your journal. Try to

beat your best score each time!

Jack Nicklaus Drill

If you are spending your time practicing putts from 10 feet, you are simply not getting the most out of your putting routine. In 2016, Brooks Koepka led the PGA Tour from 10 feet with 60.98% of putts made from that distance.

That means that if you set up and hit 10 footers for an hour, you would be among the best putters on the planet to make just over half of the putts you hit while practicing.

Jack Nicklaus take a different approach. They like to hit putts all within 3 feet. Nicklaus even hit many of his putts from inside 18 inches before heading to the tee. Why? Because he wanted the mental image of holing putts to be overpowering.

After practicing these short putts directly before heading to the tee, Nicklaus could only remember making putts by the time he got to the first green. He simply conditioned himself to expect to make putts.

Next time you practice your putting, practice all putts from a length you know you will make them. If you walk off the putting green with less confidence than when you walked on, you have practiced the wrong things. Just ask Jack Nicklaus.

100 x 3 footers

A Jacky Burke, simple (yet difficult) drill involves sinking 100 straight 3 footers, or about the length of a standard putter. To do this, he hooks the putter head in the hole, and places a ball at the butt end of the group, going around the hole in a circle until 10 balls have been placed.

He proceeded to go around the hole, performing this circle of putts 10 times, and starting over if he ever missed one of the 100. This drill accomplishes multiple goals:

• repeatedly watching putts go in the hole with a variety of breaks on different sides of the hole • conditioning your psyche to watch, and ultimately, expect putts to go in the hole • Release tension from other areas of your game; all aspects of your game get easier when you know that

your putting can "pick up the slack" if other areas of your game are slightly off-kilter

While not everyone has anywhere near enough time to attempt to make 100 straight 3-footers every day, there are ways you can apply this drill to your putting. Start with 10 straight 3 footers, see how long that takes you. It might

Page 10: SENIOR GOLFING NSW · the Forster-Tuncurry Seniors around a superb Tuncurry course. For Ken Brewer (Lynwood) this was his first visit to this ... Here is a great story of golfing

take you an hour, but you might be done in 3 minutes.

As Ryan Palmer says, it is not about the stroke. If you are worrying about putting mechanics, your focus is in the wrong place.

Humpty Dumpty

This drill focusses on putter face alignment. Place some golf balls on some high tees on the putting green. Start with 5 balls and tees in an arc. Step back approx. 5 feet and try to knock the tee from under the golf balls. This drill is good for focusing on putter face alignment and starting direction.

As Ryan Palmer says, it is not about the stroke. If you are worrying about putting mechanics, your focus is in the wrong place.

A perfect putting warm-up before the first tee 1. Putting to the fringe to warm up distance control. Take 5 balls and place them at 10,15,20, 25 and 30 foot from the fringe. Then putt to the fringe getting as close to the fringe as possible, the idea here is warming up your distance control without judging how, well you are putting which putting to a hole can do. With each putt hit the next putt 1 foot to the right of the previous putt. 2. Putt to a tee. Put tees in the green from 10, 20 and 30 ft from the fringe and putt those balls you just hit back to the tees. Before you look up guess how close to the tee you finished, this will get you to focus on your feel. By using tees it gets you to focus on small targets. 3. Practice your routine. Putt these 5 balls to tees at 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 ft but this time go through your full putting routine for these 5 putts. 4. The sound of success. Here you introduce the hole and hit 10 consecutive putts to the hole from 2 ft away. These are putts you cannot miss, so you are reinforcing the sound and sight of the ball finishing in the cup which is good for your confidence. You are now ready for the first tee.
