Dear Parents, Today we celebrated the final day for our 2014 graduate Year 12 students. The day started with breakfast at the Kedron Wavell RSL; this has become a great modern Wavell High tradition. This year we had Ashley Harrison, former student and Prefect and most notably recently retired Queensland Rugby League champion, to share his memories and offer his advice to our departing students. I thank our graduates and their parents for the great contribution made over the past five years and the dignity with which our Year 12s have concluded their schooling. My very best wishes to them all for a great life to come. Today I offered these few “rules of life” to our Year 12s. They may provide them with something to reflect upon as they leave the security of life as they have known it at school for the last twelve years and move with confidence to the next phase of their life. Make peace with your past so it won’t disturb your present. What others think of you is none of your business. Time heals almost everything, give it time. Don’t compare your life to others and don’t judge them. You have no idea what their journey is all about. Stop thinking too much, it is alright not to know all the answers. They will come to you when you least suspect it. No one is in charge of your happiness, except you. Smile. You don’t own all the problems of the world. It appears the efforts of our school P&C, local member, Mr Woodforth, and the local community have ensured that the school will have proper parking facilities at 98 Boothby Street, however, given the delay in this decision it is unlikely that the required community consultation and tendering processes can occur before school recommences. This work should be undertaken and completed early in the new school year – overall a good outcome for our school and neighbours. Our new Junior Secondary building should be ready for our parents visiting on Monday, 8 December, parents will be given a full tour, however, unfortunately due to some hold ups with materials the building will need work to be completed during the summer school vacation. Staff will have limited access to set up the new classrooms between now and January to ensure we will have classes ready for day one, Lesson 1 in 2015. The facility is sure to impress and will enable the very best learning and teaching conditions a modern school building can provide. The departure of our Year 12s today and our Year 10 and 11 students next Friday signals that the school year is drawing to a close. The Year 8 and 9 students will finalise their final exams in two weeks. Following our very important Orientation Day for our 2015 Year 7 and 8 students on Monday, 8 December, our current Year 8 and 9 students will have the opportunity to be engaged in three days of alternate activities and then receive their reports on Thursday, 11 December in Lesson 4. The school does remain open on the last day but traditionally only a small number of students attend – any student attending that day should wear their sports uniform as they will be assisting with staff setting up classrooms for 2015. There is no penalty for any student not attending that last Friday. If you know a family or friend with a child not yet enrolled or wishing to be part of the Wavell community in Year 7 or 8 for 2015, please ask them to collect an enrolment package. Please encourage them to phone our Enrolment Officer - Ms Lock 3350 0328 and return their application to the main office promptly. Remember, despite the false rumour that claims you must be in the catchment to enrol; three quarters of our enrolments do not live in the catchment area. Only 300 of our current 1300 students enrolled live in our catchment. Graduation 2014 Friday, 21 November was the final day for our Year 12 graduating students. Graduation commenced with a celebratory breakfast at Kedron Wavell Services Club. Guest speaker was Mr Ashley Harrison, who spoke eloquently about his post school achievements, and of the challenges that students are likely to experience in their adult lives. At school, the ceremony presented our seniors to an audience of proud family and friends. Speakers included Principal, Mr Major , Mr Baker (on behalf of teachers), Mrs Bolton (on behalf of parents), Alainya Doyle (Year 8 student) and, of course, captains Elaine Elevera, Rose Foster, Ryan Honor and Jobird Ualesi who made their final speeches.
