Dear Parents and Families of Colo Vale, May I firstly apologise for the lack of a Newsletter in Week 4. I did have to attend a family situation quite urgently. We have had a packed calendar of events in the past four weeks including the Author visit, Book Week Dress Up day, Working Bee from P&C, Stage Three trip to Canberra and the Bowral High STEM day for years 4-6. I have been away from school on Extended Principal Induction, to ensure I am up to date on Department Policy, Procedures and Initiatives. I learn much on these days away and they inspire me to lead our school to further greatness in partnership with students, staff and community. Children and their learning is always at the heart of this professional learning. We have also been working at improving our Positive Behaviour for Learning and creating a Wellbeing Policy for our school to update the Discipline Policy from 2013. I thank the parents who contributed to the Survey Monkey and those who took the time to attend the face to face meetings with Kerry Seadon, the Learning and Wellbeing Officer supporting our school. Much of this feedback was positive and it is heartening to hear parents levels of satisfaction with Colo Vale Public School are improved. Changing culture of a school is the hardest work of all, but also the most rewarding. I am very proud to be the Principal that serves Colo Vale Public School and grateful to the many parents and family members who contact me if they have a concern I should be aware of. Communication and Engagement are key to building a successful Learning Community. Part of our strategy this year has been to invest heavily in the Early Years to identify concerns early and seek the appropriate intervention in a timely manner. Targeted children now receive Intensive Reading Intervention four mornings per week, Learning Support is offered as extra across all grades in the school and we continue to place Learning Support Officers into classrooms over our allocation using flexible funding assigned to Principals to use where they see fit. Investing in our children is always the first priority. The new Enrolment Policy has caused some concern in the local area. Colo Vale Public School is not hugely affected by this as we have a large catchment area and 12 permanent classrooms. I sent a letter home (and on Skoolbag) to provide information regarding it. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Office. Our Years 5 and 6 students have undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government has contributed funding of $20.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate has been paid directly to the school. This amount was deducted from the excursion cost.

Book Week

Thank you to all the wonderful parents and carers who created such imaginative costumes for our students. The Book Week

parade was like book characters coming to life.

Our Book Fair was very well supported allowing the Library to add lots of new books to the collection, and also providing us with reward points so many more new titles will be added

throughout the year.

Kirli Saunders who wrote “The incredible

freedom machine” spoke to the children

on Friday about perseverance and

aiming high, they loved her photos of her

motorbike called

Valentino which inspired

the Freedom machine story.
