Ahjumawi Lava Springs State ParkJust a 45-minute drive east of Burney Falls – and a boat, canoe, or kayak ride that could last longer – awaits

one of the most unusual experiences California State Parks has to offer.

Having existed nearly 45 years, Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park remains remote, rela-tively undeveloped and perfectly fits all state social distancing orders issued by Gov. Gavin Newsom. No vehicles are allowed, but then again, they never were. Unfortunately, it is the lone state park within Shasta County that is closed until further notice due to the pandemic.

It is a park that you may have all to yourself on almost any given day – and that was evident pre COVID-19. Even if others were around, you didn’t have to go far to have total solitude.

But solitude is only a minor, even unimportant reason to pay Ahjumawi a visit once it reopens if you wish to invest the time and effort and you have access to a boat to get there. The riches at the park that inspire visitors are many and varied. Some are obvious and can be described, such as the abundant waterfowl always viewable throughout the year.

Some are very subtle and personal, almost indescribable, such as the sense of spirit while resting near the native fish traps at Crystal Springs.

The park was acquired in 1976 partly by pur-chase, partly by generous gift, when its former owner, Ivy Horr, widow of a successful lumber-

man and cattle rancher, recognized its intrinsic values. One unverified story declares that she personally contacted State Parks Director Wil-liam Penn Mott, offered the property, and invited him for a visit to look it over. When he accept-ed that invitation, he fell in love with the place. Finally, seven years after acquisition, the depart-ment gave the park its intriguing name.

“Ahjumawi” (pronounced ow-ja-mah-wee) refers to the given name for the California Indian group that has occupied this part of the state from pre-history to the present.

Translations also vary from “water people” to “where the waters come together.”

“Lava Springs” hints at the dozens of springs that issue forth from the basalt lava rock fring-ing the shoreline. In fact, the entire 6,000-acre park is an apron of relatively recent lava flows (geologically speaking) that support community of high desert plants and animals on top, and a virtual lake of water within. That water squeez-es out slowly at each spring, but collectively creates an aquatic paradise for birds, fish and people.

Ahjumawi can only be reached by boat. Power boats are allowed to access the park, but larger power boats are not recommended due to shal-low access points. There are no public roads to it and private motor vehicles are prohibited within. Prior to the park closure, visitors could launch into Big Lake at a public boat launch under the jurisdiction of the California Depart-

ment of Parks and Recreation known as the “Rat Farm.”

It is reached from McArthur by turning north off Highway 299 on to Main Street, continuing past the Inter-Mountain fairgrounds, crossing over a canal and proceeding 3 miles north on a graded dirt road, ending at a dirt launch ramp.

A one-day tour could include:• Viewing courting Western grebes racing and

diving as one in Big Lake.• Paddling up Ja-She Creek to its source of

springs.• Casting your fly line for native and wary

rainbow trout.• Looking at the threatened and endemic

Shasta Crayfish in the shallows.• Contemplating the system of native stone

fish traps at Crystal Springs used for gathering the native sucker fish.

• Walking a mile past barren black flows of basalt to glimpse a small lava tube.

That alone is ambitious for one day. Signs of indigenous peoples presence are

almost everywhere. Stone dams that served as fish traps line numerous springs. Wandering visitors may stumble across bedrock mortars, polished holes in the basalt where nutritious fine powdery meal was extracted from the abundant acorns gathered nearby.

Nine primitive campsites, all near the water’s edge, calls for a longer stay and deeper explora-tion. We just need to wait for the ‘OPEN’ sign.

It’s closed, but plan ahead now for when it reopens

SOLDSOLD

By LEE PITTSI’m a big believer in

marriage, no family should be without one. Having been married 46 years, I’ve already started saving my pennies in anticipation of our golden wedding anniversary. My wife, being an easy keeper, has said that she doesn’t want any jewelry or a new old truck. Nor does she want to go on an expensive cruise. So we’ll probably just cruise on over to Taco Bell for lunch.

My wife is a strong woman, just like the pioneering females who were ordered up as if they were a new shovel from the Sears catalog. The pioneering men were expected to marry whatever got off the train. Surprisingly, a high percentage of those mixed marriages lasted until death did them part.

In the area where I live the Swiss married Italians and it has proven to be a very good cross, as was the Basque-Italian cross. They were mixed marriages in other ways as when dairymen would marry cattlewomen, and ranchers would Here are some mixed marriag-es that worked, and a couple that never will.

Rancher X Dairyman – This has proven to be a very good cross, especially during calving. Dairy wives are especially adept at getting up every hour to check the heifers without wak-ing up their husband. Dairy wives especially enjoy feeding cows while balanced on the back of the feed truck while the husband stays warm and comfy in the cab.

I’ve only seen a few of these hybrid mar-riages end in divorce court, or with a twelve gauge, and I was surprised when one ended because I thought they had some very good years together, 1973, 1996 and 2012, to be more specific.

Rancher X Sheepherder – I don’t know what gave ranchers the idea that marrying a sheepherder would be a good idea. There would have to be an especially large dowry or a nice ranch with the deal but even then, the

practice should NOT be encouraged and no offspring should be saved from the mating. The only time it should even be considered is if the sheepherder is 92 years old, in poor health and has a large life insurance policy. Being a member of this mixed marriage means people will stare at you in town and salesmen will refuse to wait on you. Then there is the hat issue. Ranchers wear real hats while the beanies worn by sheepherders make them look like they are a Scottish oncologist out for a drive in their Porsche. Even their hobbies are different. One likes to team rope while the other likes to knit.

Cattleman X Pig Farmer – What do you call a pork producer who marries a rancher?

A social climber. This is a good cross only if you think going

to the Farm Bureau convention for vacation is a good idea. Do you have any idea how hard it is to strap on a pair of spurs to rubber boots? Even your friends down at the coffee shop will refuse to sit with you if you show up smelling like, well, you know. Besides, there are easier ways to pick up an extra hundred bucks other than marrying a pig farmer.

The promiscuous pig farmer will gladly mate any time of the year so he’ll hang around all year long. I knew one monogamously challenged pig farmer who had a five mile marriage license and wasn’t all that fanatic about his marriage vows. He led an “alterna-tive” lifestyle and when he won a trip for two to Hawaii he just went twice and left his poor wife at home doing all the chores. I knew one of these mixed marriage couples where she married him for his money and he married her for her beauty and in the end they both lost. Beware of pig farmers.

Rancher X Farmer – The absolute perfect marriage, especially in drouth years when hay is especially expensive. There is a chance of too much inbreeding and the male might be uglier than a mud fence but don’t worry, he’ll be in the fields during daylight hours and won’t come home until dark so you’ll hardly ever get a good look at him. I knew one corn-farming wife who kept the same husband and the same crop for 30 years but she wised up and rotated out of husbands and into soybeans..

By BOYD & KATHY TURNERDo you like to find new birds? Northeastern California

supports a diverse population of bird species due to the variety of habitats. From damp west-side forests to open semi-arid brush lands, many birds find a home that fits their needs. We list a few local areas where birds con-gregate and most likely seen during the summer recre-ation season, although migrations during spring and fall add greatly to the variety.

McArthur-Burney Falls State ParkLocated six miles north of the junction of Highways 89

& 299, northeast of Burney on Highway 89. The hab-itat is forested with pines and firs, with Burney Falls, creeks, and Lake Britton providing homes for water loving birds as well. Expect to see American dippers, Steller’s Jay, pileated and acorn woodpeckers, varied thrushes, and look in the wet cliffs behind the falls for black swifts – this is one of the rare nesting sites for them.

Baum LakeLocated on Baum Lake Road, near the community of

Cassel, and accessible from either Highways 299 or 89. The habitat includes pine forest and pastureland along beautiful Baum and Crystal lakes with both Hat Creek and the Pacific Crest Trail passing through this area. So, take your pick – fishing, birding, hiking – or all three. Common birds include white pelicans, ospreys, bald ea-gles, great blue herons, great egrets, warblers, spotted towhees, ducks, and geese.

Pacific Crest Trail The Pacific Crest Trail bisects the Intermountain

area, entering from Lassen Volcanic National Park to the south, running parallel to Highway 89, and existing north through McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. Because of its length, there are a variety of habitats and many bird species including western and mountain bluebirds, spotted towhees, red-tailed hawks, white-headed and black-backed woodpeckers, and gold-en eagles.

Ash Creek Wildlife Area Located approximately 3 miles east of Bieber along

Highway 299. The headquarters address (small office and barns on the north side of highway) is 659-695 with a sign on the highway. The habitat includes open brush lands, wetlands and streamside willows.

Expected birds include sandhill cranes, barn and great horned owls (look in the barns), golden and bald eagles, a variety of ducks and geese, shorebirds (yellow legs, avocets, black necked stilts and others), Wilson’s snipe, California quail, tundra swans (during migration).

Want to learn more? Join a local ornithological club such as Audubon, or list your birds with an online appli-cation such as eBird. eBird is a Cornell University web-site that compiles worldwide bird sightings to track trends, changes in migrations, etc. You can check it out at:

Pictured here are osprey – the other fishing hawk (besides the bald eagle). They often build large nests on power poles or at the top of large dead trees. Bald eagles, on the other hand, usually build their nests on a branch below the tops of trees.

REAL ESTATE | FINANCES

Your real estate professionals understand all the ins and outs of the industry, including who pays what fees and how much they run. Making sure you know your num-bers is the key to you walking away from the deal in the best financial shape possible.

WHO PAYS REALTOR FEES?This is not always cut and dry. It is

common practice for the seller to pick up the cost of the Realtor, but this is not always the case. The fee is generally subtracted from the pro-ceeds of the pending sale and are paid out to the actual listing broker. The broker then generally shares the profits with the Realtor who intro-duced the buyer into the equation.

That said, Realtor fees can be negotiated, split or even assigned to the buyer in certain situations. Before signing any final agreements, both sides should clearly understand who is responsible for the Realtor fees. This way, there are no surprises at the table when the sale is final-ized.

HOW MUCH ARE REALTOR FEES?According to Zillow, the median

price of homes that have sold in the United States is $230,000. Typically, you can bank on the Realtor fee rest-ing somewhere around 6%. On the average home sales price, 6% of $230,000 is $13,800, which is the average Realtor fee.

You should discuss this fee with your Realtor before engaging with their services, as some private realty

groups may charge more or less. Always look for Realtors to be as transparent as possible. If you don’t feel comfortable with their pricing structure, shop around for other local professionals who will give you a clearer idea of the breakdown.

OTHER COSTSIn most cases, closing costs are not

included as part of a Realtor’s fees. These are the costs charged by your

financial institution for managing the transaction, as well as other fees. They can include loan fees, insur-ance, taxes and more.

Home inspection is generally a fee picked up by the buyer, as they are investing in having the home checked out for overall structural integrity and quality. Be sure to have a clear understanding of all costs before getting too far into the pro-cess with your Realtor.

If You’re Not Careful About Building An Accurate Budget, the Fees Associated With Your Real Estate Trans-action May Be A Surprise To

You At Closing. The Best Way To Stay In the Loop With

What You’re Going To Have To Pay Is Working Closely

With Your Realtor.

Bottom Line: Factor in fees

By CARRIE CLASSON

My husband, Peter, likes buy-ing in bulk.

Peter hates paying ship-ping fees. He never wants to run out of anything and he loves a bargain. This is why we buy coffee in enormous bags, crackers by the case, nuts and raisins ten pounds at a time, rice in 20-pound bags, and beans in 50-pound bags. It is sometimes a little alarming when the boxes arrive.

I’m not quite sure how he got this way. Peter was the youngest child of six, but I don’t think his family went through any extraor-dinary hardship. My mother is the ninth of eleven children raised during the depression and she buys in modest quantities that last for no more than a week or fit in a small canvas bag—whichever is less.

Most recently, Peter decided to start ordering cheese direct from his favorite cheesemaker, but when he learned what he was going to be charged for shipping he began to fume.

“Ha! If I buy $100 at a time, I don’t pay shipping!” Peter an-nounced, looking over the fine print on the cheesemaker’s website. He spoke with Ricky at the cheese shop and Ricky confirmed there would be no shipping charge if Peter just ordered enough cheese. Ricky recommended a nice gouda in addition to the lacy baby swiss Peter is fond of. Peter was delight-ed.

“Doesn’t $100 buy an awful lot of cheese?” I asked. Our house is small and our refrigerator generally filled to capacity.

“Oh, it’s not that much…” Peter did the calculations. “It’s only about twenty pounds!”

I couldn’t deny that was a good price per pound, but twenty pounds still sounded like an awful lot of cheese.

THE POSTSCRIPT

An Awful Lot of Cheese

Then things were further com-plicated.

I had used this cheese company to buy birthday presents for my dad and they still had that address on file. Even though Peter made it quite clear this cheese was for us—not my father—we got a phone call from my dad about the time Peter was expecting his big cheese delivery.

“Hey, Peter!” my dad said, “Did you order us a big box of cheese?”

“Oh no!” Peter said.My parents, who buy little tiny

blocks of cheese which they cut into little tiny slices and serve on little tiny crackers at precisely five o’clock every evening with a small glass of white wine, were under-standably taken aback by the arriv-al of twenty pounds of cheese.

“That’s a heck of a lot of cheese! Should we mail it to you?” my dad asked.

Peter said they should just eat it and my mother expressed doubt that they would ever eat so much cheese in their lifetime.

“Oh! You’ll eat it!” Peter insisted. “That’s an awful lot of cheese!”

my mother protested. “We can pick up what you don’t

eat next time we see you!” Peter told her, and promptly ordered more cheese.

Ricky at the cheese company was appropriately contrite and gave Peter a generous discount on his new order so now we have forty pounds of cheese—twenty here and twenty in storage with my parents. I suspect this situation gives Peter a further feeling of security.

And, while I do shake my head from time to time, I also note that I have never once run out of coffee since I married Peter. We always have plenty of beans and rice to eat and now, I am quite certain, we will never run short of cheese.

In a chaotic world filled with unknowns, uncertainties, and nearly constant change, it’s good to know we’ve got the essentials covered.

REAL ESTATE | STRATEGY

But a key question remains: When exactly should you put your home on the market if you want to get the highest price? There are many factors to consider when selling your home, from the weather to home invento-ry to local ordinances.

Work with your real estate brokers to under-stand when to sell your home. They will have insights on your local market that can help you determine the best time to put your home up for sale and the best price to put on the listing.

A DAY TO REMEMBER According to the nation-

al real estate brokerage Redfin, homes listed on Thursday tend to sell fast-er and for the most money compared with other days

of the week. Homes listed on Thursday sold for an average of $3,015 more than homes listed on Monday, the worst day for selling homes, according to Redfin’s research.

There may be many rea-sons for this, but with

many homebuyers check-ing out homes on the weekends, ones that are posted on Thursdays may be top of mind.

BEST MONTH FOR HOME SALES

The best two-week list-

ing window comes between the second half of March and the first half of June, according to 2019 research by real estate website Zillow. Overall, the online real estate database found that early May is the best time of the

year to sell your home. Homes nationwide listed for sale between May 1 and May 15 tended to sell for roughly $1,600 more than the typical U.S. home and about six days faster than usual, Zillow data found.

Selling? Timing Is Everything Common sense may tell you that spring is the best time to put

your home on the market, but the data

tells us buyers are willing to purchase a

home at any time during the year if the

price is right and it fits their needs.

Despite incorrect allegations that the state was planning to close the April 25 fishing season opener – a rumor echoed by Rep. Doug LaMalfa, among others – local anglers headed to area streams to renew their casting skills.

The misinformation that was touted on a conser-vative website and shared by social media led to the postponing of an April 9 emergency meeting by the state Fish and Game Commission.

Eric Sklar of Saint Helena, FGC president, said the meeting by the commission was initiated at the request of several rural counties. (The public learned those counties were Alpine, Inyo, Mono and later, Sierra County officials adding its name.)

Sklar said those counties had “just a handful of coronavirus cases” or none, but expected large numbers of people coming from outside their coun-ties to fish.

“They were concerned that large numbers of people coming from dense urban areas were going to bring the virus to their counties,” Sklar said.

“This (meeting) was not about closing fishing season or any kind of a statewide closure,” he said. “This was about a surgical narrow approach to help a handful of counties, less than five, that have asked for our help during this crisis.”

Unfortunately, he said, there were a number of folks who spread the word that it was going to be a statewide closure. “That was never ever consid-ered,” Sklar said. “I’m just a little disappointed that folks who claim to be part of the leadership of the sport fishing community decided to spread rumors.”

Sklar made his comments following a conser-vative media site, California Globe, that posted an incorrect headline.

“CA Department Of Fish And Wildlife Commis-sioner Wants To Close Sportfishing Season Due To COVID-19,” the Globe’s headline read.

The Globe’s story was shared on Facebook by, among others, state Assemblyman James Gal-lager (R-Yuba City) and U.S. Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale).

That false headline stirred the emotions of about

400 anglers who acted on the rumor and over-loaded the commission’s website for its emergency April 9 teleconference audio meeting open to the public. Commissioners postponed the meeting until April 15 in order to accommodate a wider audience.

Charlton Bonham, director of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, said neither the CDFW nor the Fish and Game Commission had proposed a statewide closure of recreational fish-ing. “Neither intends to do so,” he said. Instead, Bonham was wanting the commission to give him emergency authority – and only until May 31 – to work with local government officials and tribal coun-cils in determining areas to temporarily close or to delay the April 25 fishing season opener due to safety concerns.

“If I’m given (the emergency authority), I’ve been very clear that my focus is on being responsive to these three counties (Alpine, Inyo and Mono),” he said. “If other counties aren’t interested in this, we don’t intend to force a county to do something.”

Bonham said the CDFW has had emergency authority in the past to close fishing where fish health is in danger due to drought conditions. “We used that only once in 2015 on the Merced River,” he said.

Among those seeking to delay the fishing opener was Alpine CAO Nichole Williamson.

“We are very concerned about people from other areas bringing COVID-19 into Alpine County,” she said. “There are no services for anglers in Alpine County. There is no food available, no lodging, the hotels and campgrounds are closed. We don’t have a hospital.”

She said despite repeated requests asking people to stay away, Alpine was already inundated with people coming into the county to backcountry ski, snowmobile and rock climb.

Mono County Supervisor John Peters said, “It is not practical or safe or responsible … to open too soon and then go back and have to start closing again.”

“No one wants to be the Grinch that postpones

‘Fishmas’ but we find ourselves in an unprece-dented situation,” added Mono Supervisors’ chair-woman Stacy Corless. “We have lost a beloved member of our community to this disease and we don’t want to lose anyone else.”

Mono County Sheriff Ingrid Braun said, “We cannot handle a couple of thousand people over-loading our system. When the restrictions are lifted, we would ask for fishing season to start. I don’t have the law enforcement and our federal partners are understaffed.”

Siskiyou County Supervisor Ed Valenzuela said that, while he supported supervisors along the east-ern Sierra seeking the CDFW emergency authority, he cautioned that such restrictions or delays would only add to the influx of visitors to other open coun-ties. “With any decision there will be ramifications that the pressure will be pushed somewhere else,” he said.

Plumas County Supervisor Lori Simpson urged keeping the April 25 fishing opener, saying “We just want fishing to be available for the locals.”

El Dorado County Supervisor Brian Veerkamp agreed with a Saturday opener but only open to locals. He said supervisors there passed an emer-gency ordinance April 14 that includes a $1,000 fine for any non-essential travel to his county. “People are supposed to stay home,” he said.

Gregory Wolfin, representing the Pit River Tribe, said the tribe supports the stay-at-home order and urged only “subsistence style fishing” practices during this time for the Pit River and all of its trib-utaries within the four counties of Shasta, Lassen, Modoc and Siskiyou.

“As of right now, we have a limited capacity for tourists to come in whether they have the COVID or not,” he said.

Following the three and one-half hours of testi-mony, the commission gave the OK for Bonham, in consultation with Sklar, to delay the fishing season opener in areas based on state, federal, local and tribal public health guidance and public safety needs. The temporary authority expires on May 31.

Misinformation about fishing season closurespread faster than COVID-19 coronavirus
