What is it: A form of social media that is a writing platform for social learning

Benefits:

*Relies on metacognition skills *Provides opportunities to deepen understandings of learned content.

*Provides opportunities for learners to collaborate. *Easy to use and manage. *Tool bar to individualize content. *Can be formatted to create a classroom or a campus *free of charge.

Limitations: *Postings can be edited by anyone *Lack of monitoring *postings could lack validity.

Organizational Application via social learning:

Organizations can set up their own classrooms to allow those interested to take part in learning opportunities.

Twitter

What is it: A form of social media where a user can post a 140 character message “Tweet”. This tweet is shared with all persons who

are connected to the user.

Benefits: *Exposure will increase traffic to websites *Easy to communicate *The use of hashtags

allow messages to be categorized *Twitter deals with real-time interaction *Set goals so that you can measure your progress *Free of charge *Allows tweeters to repost interesting information by “retweeting”.

Limitations: *Pictures using TwitPic only * limited video * tweets often go unseen * spam is bothersome * direct messages sent to one user at a time.

Organizational Application via social learning: Organizations can establish their own site so that their information and posting can be seen by all followers. This information can include pictures, links to articles, links to videos, links to blogs, announcements and recognitions.

What is it: A form of collaborative social media that is a way to informally communicate and interact in a professional online setting.

Benefits: *No cost *Promotes teamwork

*Provides the ability ask questions and share ideas *Allows employees to participate on a friendly, non-threatening platform

*Easy to navigate *Site resembles Facebook so most employees have no learning curve.

*Does not require formal trainings to use *Articles can be shared and discussions can be posted

Limitations: *Comments posted can not be private *Yammer does not monitor posts

Organizational Application via social learning: Organizations are able to post useful information and provide a space for dialogue and collaboration.

LinkedInWhat is it: LinkedIn's purpose is to allow individuals a space to network professionally at no charge. It's members are able to search for others in their field or in a field that they are interested in to view information, send messages or endorse skills.

Benefits:*Free for general use. *Largest professional networking site in the world. *Companies and individuals can have pages *Professionals can have group discussions *Skills endorsed by other professionals *Professionals are able to post information that may be helpful to others.

Limitations: *Face to face interactions are not possible *Privacy settings must be set up to avoid exposure

Organizational Application via social learning: Organizations can post it’s information, useful links to videos, pictures and articles, as well as announcements that others would be interested in learning about. Professionals who are interested in the organization can connect with them to be alerted to any postings and changes that it makes on the site.

• The learning created by the social environment, whether within four walls or on the World Wide Web, should happen if the platform for the social learning has been structured to meet the needs of the content and within context.

• The process of learning is not confined to four walls and an instructor.• The context is within the learner's control - which makes it engaging.• 24 hour frames for learning can be constructed.• Learners can develop their own PLE - Personal Learning Environment.• PLE include factors that influence learning such as capitalizing on the Social

Capital Theory of "We are better together..."• The benefit of using social media as a tool for learning is powerful

professional learning in the world of the wide web

their network knows.• Learners build confidence in their knowledge and skills because

of the shared capacity of the learning with the network. • Learners help each other, strengthening their own skills, while

professional, expert, and experience.  It is a heady sense of learning that equates to effective workforce training.
