IGCAR is empowering young, talented and motivated students to contribute to path-breaking discoveries in frontier areas of engineering/scientific research and cutting-edge technologies by offering Junior Research Fellowships in the areas of physical, chemical and engineering sciences.

Applications are invited from interested students for the award of Junior Research Fellowships at this Centre.

Among the selected candidates, those who join with M.Sc./M.Tech. will be eljgible to register for Ph.D. Those who join with B.E./B.Tech./B.Sc. Engg./B.Sc. [Tech.] will be considered for integrated Ph.D. with an option to have single degree(lntegrated Ph.D. only) or a dual degree(M.Sc.(Engg.)+ integrated Ph.D.).

Candidates can register in Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI, a deemed to be university of Department of Atomic Energy) or University of Madras or other reputed u11iversities.

1. AREAS OF RESEARCH PROJECTS:

Physical Sciences Investigations on behaviour of materials at low temperatures, high pressures and magnetic fields to explore novel properties of materials, Investigations of defect properties of solids using ion beams and positrons, Computer simulations of material properties; Studies on surfaces and nanomaterials, and exploration of materials for sensors and detectors. 2. AGE LIMIT: _ The candidate must be an Indian national. The candidate should be· less tl1an 28 years of age as on last date for receipt of application. A relaxation of up to 3 years in case of Other Backward Class applicants, 5 years in age can be given in case of Scheduled Caste and Schedt1led Tribe applicants and I 0 years in case of Physically Cl1alle11ged applica11ts.

3. QUALIFICATIONS:

i. Candidates should have consistently good academic record and sl1ould l1ave secLtred minimum of 60o/o aggregate at graduation and post graduation levels from a recog11ized University.

ii. Ca11didates those who have completed or pursuing (i11 final year/sen1ester) the qualifying degrees are eligible to " apply

iii. Candidates in the final year/semester sho11ld have scored marks above 60% aggregate until the previous semester/year a11d 1ninimum aggregate of 60o/o in B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech. level [in the case of M.Sc./ M.Tech. candidates]. In case sµch candidates event11ally join tl1e Centre, tl1ey shall l1ave acquired aggregate marks of 60o/o in tl1e qualifyi11g degrees . Relevant certificates to this effect should be submitted at the time of joi11ing the Centre. Wherever the results are declared as COPA/GPA, it 1nay be converted to percentage and e11tered. (The formula prescribed by the institute for conversion to be indicated at the time of verificatio11)

4. SELECTION PROCEDURE:

Applicatio11s will be scrutinized and suitability of ca11didates will be decided on the basis of their academic perfor1nance.

Suitable ca11didates u11der the Category A & B will be selected based on WRITTEN EXAMINATION and

INTERVIEW. Writte11 Examination wi ll be held on 27/05/2018 at Chennai. Based on the number of applications received from various regions, Centres rnay be increased and the same wi ll be intimated through cal l letter.

A summary scrutiny of the application would be made for short-listing of candidates for the written examination and detailed scrt1tiny of the eligibility of the candidate wou ld be done at the time of interview. Candidate fulfilling the eligibility criteria can plan to attend the written examination.

Candidates fro1n Category A, satisfying any of the t'ollowing conditions are exempted from writte11 examination:

i. Witl1 valid UGC-CSIR-NET Fellowsl1ip (SLE1~/Lecturership is not eligible) ii. Witl1 valid JEST score of 90 percentile a11d above

iii. Witl1 a valid GATE score after Master's degree

Tl1ere will be no written exami11ation for all tl1e ca11didates in Category C & D a11d candidates would be shortlisted based 011 GA TE score.

5. SELECTION INTERVIEWS:

The Selection Interview for all short listed candidates will be conducted at KALPAKKAM. The recommendation I #

decisio11 of the Selection Committee will be final and binding.

iv. Candidates are required to take a printout of the application form generated by the syste1n.

v. Ca11didates need not submit printot1t of their 011line applications or any otl1er document either by post or by 11a11d. They will be required to bring tl1e pri11touts of their online applications at the final stage of recrt1itment process if they reach that stage.

Tl1e final inductio11 of the selected candidates as JRFs will be subject to production of all necessary documents in original (Proof of Date of Birth/Caste certificate/ pl1ysically cl1alle11ged certificate if applicable, B.Sc./M.Sc.!B.E./B.Tecl1./M.E./M.Tech. degree a11d Marks sheets) on the dates intimated to the ca11didates by the Department.

The number of fellowships indicated i11 this advertisement is approximate and may vary as per the requirement at the time of final selection. The Centre reserves the right 11ot to fill up the fellowships if it so desires. IGCAR reserves the right to screen a11d call only st1cl1 ca11didate as are found prima - facie suitable for being considered by tl1e selectio11 co1nmittee. 7. MEDICAL The selected candidates are eligible to join the Contributory Health Service Sche1ne of this Centre as applicable.

8. ACCOMMODATION '

The Selected candidates will be provided with subsidized bachelor .Hostel Acco1nmodatio11 during tl1e tenure.

9. FELLOWSHIP AND TENURE

Tl1e selected candidates will be initially taken as Junior Research Fellows (JRF) and will be paid a stipend of Rs. 25,000/- per month. The fellowship will be provided initially for a period of two years. Continuation of the fellowship is subject to satisfactory performance a11d review at the end of each year. On satisfactory perfor1nance, the tenure of Fellowsl1ip will be furtl1er extended and upgraded to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) from the third year onwards with a stipend ofRs.28,000/- per month (consolidated). Tl1e total period of the fellowship shall in no case exceed five years. Tl1ey are entitled for contingency grant including book allowance of Rs.32,000/- per year.

10.
