Segundo Domingo de Adviento December 6, 2020

My dear parishioners, This week we have two major Marian feast days coming up: December 8th is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and December 12th is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Even though the obligation to attend Sunday Mass and Holy Days of Obligation has been lifted for the coronavirus pandemic, we will still have opportunities for you to attend Mass. For the Solemnity of the Immaculate Concep-tion of the Blessed Virgin Mary, there is an English Vigil Mass on Monday, December 7th at 7:30 pm. Also, on that day, our church Christmas lights will be in-stalled. We will not be having the traditional lighting ceremony, but the lights will be left on as soon as the workers complete the job. Feel free to come and see the beauty of the lights that remind us that Christ is our light, who transforms the darkness. On Tuesday, De-cember 8th, we will have the 8:30 am English Mass as always and then a 7:30 pm Mass in Spanish. We will have music to help us pray the Mass and to honor the Blessed Mother at all the Masses. These Masses will all be livestreamed as well. The celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be different this year due to covid restrictions. We have added some Masses to accommodate the crowds and you will need a ticket to attend one of the Masses. The tickets may be picked up at the rectory or after Mass on Sunday from one of the members of the Guadalupe committee. We are allowing 200 tickets per Mass, so with four Masses, that is 800 people. Each Mass has a different color ticket: Friday December 11 at 7:30 pm is green, Friday, December 11 at 11 pm is white, Satur-day, December 12 at 9 am is red and Saturday, Decem-ber 12 at 7 pm is blue. If all of the tickets are not dis-tributed before the Masses, you may try to enter at one of the Masses, but once all of the tickets are gone, no one will be permitted to enter. The mariachi will be playing at each Mass. All of these Masses will also be livestreamed. The church will remain open with ma-ñanitas after the 11 pm Mass until 4 am on December 12. The church will reopen at 8 am on December 12 and will remain open the whole day until after the last Mass at 7 pm. Unfortunately, there will be no proces-sion or fiesta after that Mass. Come and visit Mama Guadalupe during the day. Come to these Masses and allow our dear Mother, the ever-blessed Virgin Mary to wrap her mantle around you hold you close to her Immaculate Heart. Mis queridos feligreses, Esta semana tenemos dos grandes fiestas Maria-nas: el 8 de diciembre es la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción y el 12 de diciembre es la festividad de Nues-tra Señora de Guadalupe. Aunque ya no hay obligación de asistir a Misa los domingos y días Festivos por la pan-demia del coronavirus, todavía tendremos oportunidades para que ustedes asistan a Misa. Para la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción de la Bienaventurada Virgen María, hay una Misa de vigi-lia en inglés el lunes 7 de diciembre a las 7:30 pm. Ade-más, ese día, las luces de Navidad de nuestra iglesia serán instaladas. No tendremos la ceremonia de iluminación tradicional, pero las luces se dejarán prendidas en cuanto los trabajadores completen el trabajo. Siéntanse libres de venir y ver la belleza de las luces que nos recuerdan que Cristo es nuestra luz, quien transforma la oscuridad. El martes 8 de diciembre, tendremos la Misa en inglés a las 8:30 de la mañana como siempre y después a las 7:30 de la noche Misa en español. Tendremos música para ayudar-nos a orar la Misa en honor a la Santísima Madre en todas las Misas. Todas estas Misas serán transmitidas en vivo también. La celebración de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe será diferente este año debido a las restricciones por covid. Hemos agregado algunas Misas para acomodar la muchedumbre y ustedes necesitarán un boleto para asistir a una de las Misas. Los boletos los pueden recoger en la oficina parroquial o después de la Misa el domingo, de uno de los miembros del Comité Guadalupano. Estamos permitiendo 200 boletos por Misa, así que con cuatro Mi-sas, esas son 800 personas. Our Lady of Guadalupe

Fifty-five year old Juan Diego met the Blessed Virgin Mary on the morning of December 9, 1531, as he hurried to Mass near Mexico City. She wished to have a church built and to

be acknowledged as the Mother of the True God. After the local bishop deflected the Virgin’s request, Juan brought roses in his rough cloak as a sign. Unfurling his cloak, Juan re-vealed a miraculous image of the Virgin wearing a black ma-

ternity belt and bearing the jasmine flower over the womb. The Aztec symbolism clearly showed Mary’s unborn child to be the divine center of the cosmos. In 1999 Pope John Paul II declared Our Lady of Guadalupe the Patroness of the Un-

born.

Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe

Juan Diego de cincuenta y cinco años conoció a la Santísima Virgen María en la mañana del 9 de diciembre de 1531, mien-tras se apuraba para ir a Misa cerca de Ciudad de México. Ella

deseaba que construyeran una iglesia para ser reconocida como la Madre del Verdadero Dios. Después de que el obispo de la localidad desvió la solicitud de la Virgen, Juan llevó rosas en

su tilma como una señal. Al abrir su tilma, Juan reveló una imagen milagrosa de la Virgen vestida con un cinturón de ma-

ternidad negro y con una flor de jazmín sobre su matriz. El simbolismo Azteca mostró claramente que el feto de María era el centro divino del cosmos. En 1999 el Papa Juan Pablo II

declaró a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe la Patrona de los niños no nacidos.

Our Church History...

The Church Influenced the Abolition of Slavery

Although many early Church Fathers saw the practice of owning slaves as a justifiable result of the fall, or even as a chastisement, these sentiments were contrary to the equality of all mankind stressed in the New Testament. While initially her influence over culture was limited, the Church was later able to stand firmly in opposition to the atrocity of slavery. In 1453, Pope Eugene IV heard of Portuguese slave traders in the Canary Islands and is-sued a fierce order to release all men and women at once. With the discovery of the New World, slavery be-came more of an issue, leading Pope Paul III in 1537 to issue Sublimis Deus—the Most Sublime God—condemning all slavery in the New World. With the white slave owners slow to heed this censure, Pope Ben-edict XIV condemned slavery in the New World again with Immensa Pastorum in 1741. Pope Pius IX reviled slavery globally as well, calling it “the supreme villainy.” The Patron of slaves is St. Peter Claver, who spent a life-time ministering to the Africans in the filthy hulls of the slave ships traveling to South America.

La Iglesia Influyó en la Abolición de la Esclavitud

Aunque muchos de los Padres de la Iglesia primitiva vie-ron la práctica de poseer esclavos como el resultado justi-ficado de la caída, o como un castigo, estos sentimientos eran contrarios a la igualdad de toda la humanidad enfa-tizada en el Nuevo Testamento. Mientras que inicialmen-te su influencia sobre la cultura fue limitada, la Iglesia fue más tarde pudo oponerse firmemente a la atrocidad de la esclavitud. En 1453, el Papa Eugenio IV escuchó acerca de comerciantes de esclavos portugueses en las Islas Canarias y emitió una orden feroz de liberar ense-guida a todos los hombres y mujeres. Con el descubri-miento del Nuevo Mundo, la esclavitud se convirtió en un problema, que llevó al Papa Pablo III en 1537 a emitir Sublimis Deus—el Dios Sublime—condenando toda es-clavitud en el Nuevo Mundo.
