Introduction

I n our Securex South Africa edition we take a look at the new seminar theatre which has a range of topics to suit all exhibitors and visitors. We also have an interesting Q and A with Mohammed

Owais, Director Middle East and Africa, Western Digital, whom was attending Securex West Africa in March. He discusses tackling the best way to dealing with security issues in Nigeria with Emma Okonji.

We also take another look at Paxton Access’ training workshop programme in South Africa which has proved popular with companies. Paxton trainers, Riaan Van Der Merwe and Werner Geldenhuys, have amassed 33 years’ experience in the security industry. They detail the top questions asked by installers attending the training programme.

Important contributions to this edition from Baldwin Boxall, Wipro Limited, Visa, Delta Scientific, ComAir, Tele Eye, Palabora Copper and the Central Bank of Nigeria.I would also like to touch on the important markers pointing to an upturn in the African Continents economic stability. In 2014 commodity prices tumbled. Many economists predicted the worst for Africa. For decades the continent has been dependent on commodities to power economic growth. When prices crashed, economies would go into a dive. This time around, though, things seem different. The continent is holding up well.

Some countries, especially those that are still very dependent on commodities, have seen bigger downgrades. But overall the situation is positive. Only two economies, Sierra Leone (a commodity-

dependent economy which has also been hit by Ebola) and Equatorial Guinea (an oil-soaked kleptocracy), will see their economies contract over the next two years. Some African economies have been upgraded. Lower oil prices are a boon for Kenya, which is a big importer of the fuel. The Kenyan government is also embarking on big fossil-fuel hungry rail and energy projects. We commented in our last issue on China’s pledge to buy more oil from Nigeria, strengthening trade links for both sides.

What explains Africa’s solid performance? A few things point towards this. Manufacturing output in the continent is expanding as quickly as the rest of the economy. Growth is even faster in services, which expanded at an average rate of 2.6% per person across Africa between 1996 and 2011. Tourism, in particular, has boomed: the number of foreign visitors doubled and receipts tripled between 2000 and 2012. All this means that even if income from commodity production slips, other parts of the economy can take up the slack.

All in all this is encouraging news and we look forward to positive times ahead for the stability and growth of the African Continent.

The Securex 2015 free-to-attend Seminar Theatre has a comprehensive range of topics to suit all tastes. “We have tried to bring a broad scope of

current technology trends and information on legislative matters to the fore in the content of the seminar topics. All of our speakers have extensive experience in the industry and bring a wealth of knowledge to the table,” says Joshua Low, Securex Event Director at show organiser Specialised Exhibitions Montgomery. The seminar programme runs over the three days of the exhibition, which is being held at Gallagher Convention Centre from 12 to 14 May.

12th May:

Installer workshop: Abie Ali, owner and Director, Frank Street Trading. This presentation will encompass an interactive, engaging discussion surrounding pertinent factors that highlight success and business continuity for privately owned security companies.

Zipstream workshop: Roy Alves, Business Development Manager MEA, Axis Communications. Axis Communications introduces Zipstream technology, allowing customers to benefit from reduced bandwidth and storage requirements without having to invest in new cameras or software. Axis’ Zipstream technology is fully compatible with the widely adopted H.264 compression standard and has been developed specifically for video surveillance applications to lower bandwidth and storage requirements by an average of 50% or more.

Division, Servest SA. This presentation encompasses an in-depth, detailed overview of all of the legislative structures influencing the security industry. Don’t fall short of the law! The Private Security Industry Regulation Amendment Bill: Mpho Mofikoe, Deputy Director in Communications, Registrations (CRM) & Training, Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA). The Private Security Industry Regulation Amendment Bill is controversial because it aims to force foreign-owned private security firms to sell at least 51% of their companies to South Africans. Imposing restrictions on the ownership of security companies may discourage investment into this sector and could jeopardise jobs and general security. What are the ramifications for the South African Security industry – should this bill be approved?

Adherence to fire standards. Choosing a compliant installer: Bevan Wolff, Technical Manager, FPASA. The fire/smoke and gas detection and/or suppression industry has undergone a radical shakeup in the past few years, with more stringent control over installers being put in place to alleviate substandard workmanship. This presentation features the reality of understanding the application of standards in the South African fire market, what skills and certifications are required and what end users should do to adhere to these standards.

The changing face of biometrics: Walter Rautenbach,

Managing Director and founder, Neametrics. The large-scale rollout of biometrics has a positive effect on consumer acceptance and creates a myriad applications and possibilities. With this rapid expansion comes the need to explore the challenges of privacy and how these systems fit into the ‘Internet of Things’ and the ‘Identity of Things’.

13th May:

Installer workshop: Craig van Rensburg, MD & National SAIDSA Executive committee member, Star Alarms. By-law no. 5 installation practice: Standard installation specification for intruder alarm systems for domestic, commercial, retail and industrial installations. How to select a compliant security services provider: Tony Botes, Secretary and Administrator, SASA

Security trends in 2015 and beyond: Andrew Seldon, Editor of Hi Tech Security Solutions

State of the industry: current statistics – PSIRA: Mpho Mofikoe, Deputy Director in Communications, Registrations (CRM) & Training, Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA).

Synergistic guarding support and labour relations: Danie Schoeman, Commercial Director, G4S. The private security sector in South Africa employs more than 445 000 people in more than 9 300 registered security

businesses. With such large numbers of both certified and non-certified security officers, it is imperative that companies support and streamline guarding operations and efficiently manage personnel. Gain an understanding into the means and strategic systems utilised in synergising guarding support and valuable methods employed during difficult labour relations issues. 14th May:

Potential implications for the private security industry of ownership restrictions on foreign providers: Peter Draper, Director, Tutwa Consulting. Should President Zuma sign the Private Security Regulation Amendment Act into law, overnight foreign private security providers will be obliged to yield 51% of their shares to South African citizens. This would have substantial diplomatic, trade and investment consequences, not just for the industry but also for the country. Similarly, it would destabilise ownership patterns in the industry itself, leading to unpredictable rearrangements of current linkages, alliances, and business arrangements. Some contours of these potential impacts will be addressed in the talk, and recommendations for the industry as a whole will be proffered.

2015 African security review - security trends: Richard Rohman, Sales and Marketing Director, Centurion Systems. Gain an in-depth understanding of the perspectives that help shape security policy and

practice on the African continent. This presentation will enlighten visitors on the current security trends, human security issues, including security sector transformation, civil-military relations, crime and justice, corruption and governance, small arms control, peace support initiatives and conflict management. A link between economics, politics, society, culture and human security will also be highlighted.

Africa - tapping into growth opportunities, challenges and strategies: Jeff Blackbeard, Africa Strategy Advisor, Moore Stephens CJL. Africa is one of the world’s fastest growing economic hubs. Nine of the world’s 20 fastest-growing economies are from the African continent. Africa’s development shows characteristics that represent ample opportunity for the future - six major trends have been reshaping African economies and turning them into promising investment opportunities for the world’s largest consumer business companies. Gain an understanding into how these opportunities are meaningful for the African security industry.

Funding for security SME’s - accessing DTI grant rebates and finance for your capital investment: Rishad Ahmed, CEO and founder, Incentives SA. How do end users and developers finance their security installations? The Department of Trade and Industry has made available incentives to assist South African companies with their capital investment into machinery and related services. Over R5-billion has been disbursed to qualifying companies. A rebate of between

30 and 70% is granted to companies that meet the criteria. For example, if you wanted to purchase a machine that costs R10-million, you may qualify for R5-million back from the DTI. Incentives SA has been advising companies on how to access these grants as well as accessing finance from the IDC at a low interest rate with flexible payment terms. Find out how to apply and how your company may benefit from this incredible opportunity.

Cyber security - a pertinent business risk: Manuel Corregedor, operations manager, Wolfpack Information Risk. As the frequency and costs of security incidents continue to rise, research indicates that many organisations have not updated critical information security processes, technologies, and employee training needs. In some cases, it appears that information security programmes have weakened due to inadequate investments in information security. At the same time, the financial costs of investigating and mitigating incidents grow year over year. Compromises by insiders—current and former employees, as well as third parties with trusted network access—continue to rise, but many organisations have not implemented processes and technologies to address internal incidents. No matter how secure an organisation’s network and data, it will be open to compromise if third parties do not employ equivalent security and privacy safeguards. Find out what basic security safeguards businesses can implement to manage today’s elevated threats. The role of electronic locks in the access control world: Victor Hage, general manager, Salto MEA. Electronic wire free and wireless locks is the technology of choice for millions of people worldwide. See first hand the simplicity, reliability, security and cost effectiveness of electronic locks and their many uses in the access control world.

Visa an international electronic payment company, sponsored the Prepaid Summit Middle East event for the sixth consecutive year in 2015. The event was held in Dubai.

Uniting over 150 leading participants, this conference is a regional standard for the electronic payments industry.

On this occasion, various awards were presented during a ceremony to regional financial institutions, including a significant number based in Africa and the Middle East. These were Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait, Banque Al Jazira, Banque Libano-Française, Commercial Bank of Qatar, SCC Bank, Kuwait Finance House and United Bank of Africa (UBA) Cameroon.

After the awards ceremony, UBA Cameroon was crowned the winner of the “Prepaid Innovative Product of the Year” award for its innovative “Cobranded Student ID Visa Prepaid” concept, which aims to provide universities and students with a multi-function Visa card.

Serving as an identification card for the student, with information identifying the student and indicating his or her department and university year, this reloadable prepaid card can also be used internationally. This is the first prepaid programme of its kind in Francophone Africa.

Thanks to its Student UBA prepaid Visa card, UBA Cameroon has signed three partnerships with the largest universities in the country: Université de Douala, Université de Yaoundé 1 and Université de Yaoundé 2.

Today, 50,000 cards are used by students at Université de Douala and close to 100,000 more are being produced for Université de Yaoundé 1 and Université de Yaoundé 2.

Speaking on the presentation of the “Prepaid Innovative Product of the Year” award to UBA Cameroon, Mohamed Touhami El Ouazzani, General Manager of Visa for Morocco and Francophone Africa, stated: “I am very happy that UBA Cameroon has been recognised for its efforts in support of the development of electronic payments. Africa is the continent that will see the largest increase in electronic payments between now and 2016. In this area, Visa offers numerous innovation-based mobile banking services and solutions through its partnerships with financial institutions and international mobile phone businesses, notably via Samsung Pay and Apple Pay.

Thanks to Visa Token Service technology, these two new services will facilitate secure payments with a broad range of connected devices. They will replace the sensitive payment account information contained on plastic cards with a digital account number that can be stored in complete safety on mobile devices and used to pay for purchases in stores or through apps.”

This year, the Prepaid Summit Middle East awards committee received a record number of nominations from over 50 countries, including Algeria, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Pakistan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Director, Sales and Distribution, Middle East and Africa, Western Digital, Mohammed Owais, was in Nigeria recently for the SECUREX West Africa security exhibition. He spoke with Emma

Okonji on how best Nigeria could address security issues by deploying the right technology solutions.

You visited Nigeria to attend the security conference and exhibition organised by SECUREX West Africa. What is your assessment of the event?

The 2015 SECUREX West Africa security exhibition held in Lagos, is one of the best security exhibitions that Western Digital (WD) has attended in the whole of West Africa, and what we saw and the quality of participants and exhibitors that we met during the two day conference and exhibition, were beyond what we had imagined. Participants were business focused and we met with several system integrators that indicated interests to work with us and also to partner us on our surveillance solutions. Again, people were excited with our surveillance solutions and we were able to build some alliances that I think will be fruitful in the future. So far, the exhibition and conference were very successful and we will always want to ASSOCIATE with exhibitions like this in the future. Africa is the next destination point for technology business transaction and we are gradually shifting our base to Nigeria, just like other companies.

Tell us about Western Digital and the interest for attending security conference in Nigeria?

Western Digital is a pioneer leader in hard disc drive storage facilities in the world. We manufacture best in class external and internal hard drives that are used for information technology (IT) surveillance. Our Purple Drive are synanimous with surveillance and the idea is to provide customers with every security details about surveillance. In Nigeria, particularly in Ikeja Computer Village MARKET , we have carried out a lot of INVESTMENTS in the area of branding and customer awareness of our solutions, as well as educational seminars for our customers. The technology market is evolving in Nigeria and we will continue to invest in the Nigerian market in the area of IT surveillance. Our interest for attending the 2015 SECUREX West Africa event was to meet with more system integrators within and outside Nigeria and to showcase to them and others, the latest in surveillance technology, which is our line of business.

WD has been operating in Nigeria since 2008. What is your current market share and where do you aspire to be in the next two years?

I cannot comment on our market share in Nigeria for now because we do not have a third party company that will assess and release statistics of our market share and market penetration in Nigeria. But one thing that is sure is that WD is a market leader in internal and

external hard disc drive for IT surveillance globally.

What are your core product solutions?

Our core product solutions are focused on security surveillance. Our internal hard disc storage is called Storage Technology Business Unit and the external hard disc storage is called the Consumer Storage Business Unit. These are the two major sectors we concentrate on and we have further diversified the Consumer Storage Business Unit, to include My Cloud Storage. In the Storage Technology Business Unit, we concentrate on surveillance driven by Purple Drives, Red Drives, and the Green and Blue drives. We equally have the Enterprise Unit that deals with data centres.

What is My Cloud Storage solution all about?

My Cloud Storage solution is one of our solutions, which is designed with a capacity of between two to four terabytes, depending on the demand of the customer, and it comes with a complete tools to secure data that could be controlled by the customer and it could be accessed from anywhere in the customer’s house. It is installed in the house and linked to the cloud and could also be accessed from any location outside the home, especially if one travels out. It could be accessed via tablets, laptops, and mobile phones with internet CONNECTIVITY . My Cloud is a new technology and it is very good for IT surveillance.

How does your surveillance solutions operate, using the right drive?

Standard desktop hard drives are designed to operate approximately eight hours a day for five days per week. Consider now that the DVR or high-end surveillance system typically runs 24 hours per day, for seven days ore week, recording numerous simultaneous video streams. What is needed for applications like these is another type of drive, known as the WD surveillance drive. WD has designed a storage lineup, perfect for digital video surveillance and its many unique environments and application sets. WD’s surveillance drives, enable SDVRs, NVR, CCTV, IPTV, and other digital video surveillance systems to deliver a comprehensive range of features and capabilities such as high-resolution image quality, streaming video from multiple high-definition cameras, video archiving with ultra-fast data access and on-demand video playback. Regardless of the surveillance environment, whether it is banking, CASINO , retail, commercial, corporate, government or law enforcement, WD surveillance-based hard drives deliver the performance, added capacity, and enhanced reliability that surveillance applications require.

How can your surveillance solutions address insecurity situation in the country?

Our surveillance solutions can address insecurity situation in Nigeria and not only in Nigeria, but in all

FEATURE

SA April/May 201513

places where there are insecurity issues. But I must say that Nigeria is not the only country with security challenges, because several other countries of the globe are also faced with the same kind of challenges. We created our surveillance solution to address insecurity challenges. For example our Purple Drive solution is capable to monitoring troubled environment 24/7 non-stop and capture images of people and objects in such environment.

The WD Purple surveillance storage is built for 24/7 always-on surveillance in high-definition security systems that use up to eight hard drives and up to 32 cameras. Exclusive All Frame technology works with other streaming to reduce error pixilation and video interruptions that occur when desktop hard drives are incorrectly used as storage in security systems.

Most crimes are committed on highways. Do you have surveillance solution for highway tracking?

We do not provide solutions for highway tracking. We are storage company and we provide security solutions from the backend facilities of a company or data centre. What we do is to produce the drive that is stored at the backend device to monitor and capture movement of people. So if there is an unfortunate incident like theft or anything else, the hard disc drive could be retrieved from the backend device and played with the aid of another device, to show the picture and voice form, and all that transpired within the given period.

What is your business relationship with government in convincing government to see and appreciate the strength of your solution?

We have not engaged the Nigerian government on this, but we have plans to do so because the solution, no doubt, will be of immense value for Nigeria. We are, however, discussing with some technology systems

integrator who work directly with the government, to sell the solution to government.

What are the success stories of your storage solutions in areas where they have been deployed and tested in and outside Nigeria?

In Nigeria, most banks are currently using our solutions and they have all commended WD for the agility of the solutions. Outside Nigeria such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where our solutions have also been deployed, we are equally getting positive feedbacks on the efficiency of the solutions. Systems integrators that are providing security solutions for Nigerian banks and banks outside the country, depend on our surveillance solution and they are happy doing so.

In the financial sector, there are several cases of stolen monies that are not made public. How can your solution help address some of these financial challenges in the banking sector?

Yes, we have a surveillance solution that is currently being deployed in banks, but it does not stop financial fraud. It can detect physical movement of people who may be suspects of financial frauds in banks. Again, if there is any unfortunate incidence like armed robbery in the bank, our solution is capable of capturing the picture of those involved. When the data that is stored in our drive is retrieved and played on a device, it will show clearly those involved in the crime.

FEATURE

SA April/May 2015 14

There are cases where the pictures of retrieved data are not clear enough to identity the object captured. To what extent has your solution been able to address the issue of poor picture image?

We have powerful drives from WD that are capable of capturing and recording sharp images and the images remain sharp anytime they are retrieved. Enhanced technology are used in building drives today, just to ensure quality image at all times and that is what WD is doing.

What are the security features that make your surveillance solution unique and invulnerable to attacks by smart people who may want to deactivate the installed facility before carrying out any nefarious activities?

We have new technology embedded in all our drives, both internal and external hard drive, and the essence is to provide security checks at all levels. But if people are smart enough to shut down the device housing our drives, then there is no way the drives could capture record data and images.

What is the acceptance level of Nigerians to surveillance solutions?

The acceptance level is high and I noticed that from the number of participants that visited the exhibition stands and I think Nigeria is highly enthusiastic in using technology to drive her entire process. Nigerians are faced with security solutions and they are coming up to look for security solutions that will actually address the challenges.

Finally, the issue of training and retraining is key to technology solution adoption and deployment. What are your plans in this regard?

Training is key like you rightly observed and we in partnership with several system integrators to train them on our surveillance solution. We train them from installation to deployment and servicing as well and these are key aspects of our training. Apart from the physical training, which we carry out, we also have online training school, known as the WDuniversity.com and people can take advantage of it and get themselves trained and certified. There are different levels of training and certifications.

From time to time, we also go out to train secondary schools students as well as SALES people in Nigeria. In 2014 alone, we trained over 350 sales people, and have certified several of them.

Embracing IT automation at the core of business operations is critical for companies looking to innovate, transform, and compete in ever more demanding markets. With many large

enterprises’ IT environments increasing in complexity, the idea of clinging to manual static processes that require constant human intervention and maintenance is not a viable solution for the future. Next-generation automation tools essentially make it simpler to maintain and evolve the organisation’s IT estate via sophisticated self-learning and self-healing systems.

Intelligent Automation

The trend of recent years towards Cloud-centric and on-demand models of IT provisioning, helps to pave the way for more efficient and more automated integration between systems. It is against this backdrop that the benefits of widespread automation start to become possible.

Intelligent automation – in other words, the combination of artificial intelligence and automation— allows entire systems and processes to work flawlessly without the need for human intervention. This is truly a paradigm shift from remedial, manual infrastructure management to a proactive, automated management via

predictive analytics and self-healing mechanisms. But perhaps, most valuably, as core functions start working autonomously, human capital resources are freed up to focus on higher-value, more strategic IT initiatives. Greater levels of automation help in getting rid of redundant tasks to make this possible.

This re-deployment of skills and resources often means energy can be diverted to other areas of the business – such as research and development, innovation, or new ventures. The result is often greater levels of agility and enhanced delivery of products and services to customers.

Innovation benefits

Widespread automation across the IT estate also enables the organisation to more easily connect new systems to the core enterprise architecture. These could be within the enterprise and also between the partner companies, broader ecosystems and industry value chains. Extending this concept further, automation can allow organisations tap into even more extensible innovation networks by easily connecting to partners, customers and ideators across multiple platforms. For example, a Canadian mining company exposed certain of its geological surveys, and invited innovations to

TECHNOLOGY

develop modelling software that would identify the best areas to mine. This open-innovation, crowdsourcing initiative yielded profitable results for both the mining company and its innovation partner.

In fact, as the concept of “the Internet of Things” gains momentum, automation will assist companies in seamlessly connecting any number of connected devices and sensors – with the potential to generate new business models and innovation opportunities. In this new era, we will start to see everything from self-driving cars, to virtual customer assistants, to advanced robotics featuring self-learning abilities – all entering the commercial space and starting to impact business

and create new innovation opportunities. According to the forecasts of research giant Gartner, this era of smart machines is likely to be the most disruptive in the history of IT.

IT automation also brings greater efficiency. Clients realise huge cost savings on maintenance when shifting to automated managed services models. These savings in the back-end allow funds to be re-diverted to innovation efforts at the front-end. Furthermore, automated and software-defined environments give organisations the flexibility they need to succeed in a digitised world. The Agile programming of the applications and infrastructure is essential in creating a dynamic models where new ideas can be quickly tested – either to be discarded or further explored and potentially commercialised.

As organisations gain awareness of the benefits of automation in the early stage of the automation maturity cycle, the focus starts to shift to new innovations that allow the company to reach higher levels of automation maturity. In many different ways, IT automation is the key that unlocks a company’s innovation strategy – allowing them to be more competitive while improving productivity, efficiency, and the delivery of products/services.

In this new era, we will start to see everything from self-driving cars, to virtual customer assistants, to advanced robotics featuring self-learning abilities – all entering the commercial space

Delta Scientific, the leading manufacturer of counter-terrorist vehicle control systems used in the United States and internationally, today announced that

Security Products magazine and its sister website Security-Today.com have honoured Delta’s HD300 barrier, that will stop a 15,000 pound (66.7 Km) vehicle traveling 50 mph (80 kpm) and is available with either a fully electric or hydraulic control unit, with a coveted “Govie” award in the Green/Sustainable Solutions and Products category.

Environmentalists and those organizations with a “green” initiative can choose either an electro-mechanical or hydraulic control unit. Those that need the extra power of the hydraulic unit do not need to use petroleum-based oil. Instead, customers can simply substitute bio-degradable oils, usually derived from cooking oils or vegetable oil.

“Another big plus is that, while hydraulic lines are buried, the motors are kept above the ground (“above grade” in contractor parlance),” adds Greg Hamm, Delta Scientific vice president-marketing and sales.

“Therefore, there are less environmental problems than with the electro-mechanical motor which is placed below the ground. Incorporating a hydraulic controller, there are no problems of a motor sitting in a pool of water or swallowed by mud.”

With its 24-inch (61 cm) shallow foundation and aesthetic design, the HD300 obviates the concerns of interference with buried pipes, power lines and fiber optic communication lines. The shallow foundation also reduces installation complexity, time, materials and corresponding costs. The HD300 is perfect for high water table locations and areas with corrosive soils. It provides low maintenance as all components are accessible from the sides or top of the barrier.

The Security Products’ Government Security Awards were launched in 2009 and re-launched as The Govies in 2011. Participation in the program continues to grow every year with a record number of 67 entries submitted this year. Platinum and Gold designations within award categories will be announced during the ISC West Expo, which will be held April 15-17 at Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas.

Since its launch in South Africa last year, The Paxton Group, a global designer and manufacturer of electronic access control and door entry systems, has

trained nearly 600 installers from over 300 companies on the Certified Paxton Installer Programme, a free access control workshop.

The workshop aims to provide the expertise and skills to install Paxton products confidently and correctly first time. For installers this means less time on site, increasing the profit, and greater customer satisfaction as the workplace experiences less disruption with highly-trained installers.

As well as focusing on educating the installer, Paxton have also learnt a thing or two from conducting the programme! Feedback and response from attendees has broadened Paxton’s breadth of knowledge and understanding about the South African security market and its installers. With this awareness the company hopes to improve upon their offering and give installers exactly what they’re asking for – fast training, simple to install systems and consistently great support.

Paxton trainers, Riaan Van Der Merwe and Werner Geldenhuys have amassed 33 years’ experience in the security industry. They detail the top questions asked by installers attending the training programme.

How long has Paxton been available to buy in South Africa and where from?

Paxton has been on the market in South Africa for 10 years. The company sells through distribution, and its range of products are available to purchase from Reditron, Pinnacle Security Ltd and Westcon Security Solutions.

Is Paxton more expensive than local brands?

Although Paxton is UK based, it is no more expensive than buying a local brand; in many instances its products are cheaper.

Paxton pay exceptional attention to the development of high quality products, customer care and support. The company offer a variety of security solutions to suit

Net2 is designed to work seamlessly in the event of communications failure. It will continue to permit or deny access to users as appropriate.

different site requirements. Paxton’s modular system design and one door philosophy means doors can be added as required or when budget becomes available. The company also offer free software upgrades for life and free training for its installers.

Do Paxton manufacture multi door controllers?

Paxton’s signature access control system is Net2, an advanced PC based access control solution. Net2 is a single door access control unit offering centralised administration and control of sites from one to one thousand doors and up to 50,000 users.

Paxton controllers operate separately meaning that if one controller fails, the remaining doors will still operate as separate functioning units. In contrast multi door controllers can raise certain issues, for example if you have a 4 door controller installed that fails, you will lose access to all 4 doors.

Amongst other benefits this distributed intelligence architecture facilitates the simple extension of systems to future proof your installation. If a controller goes offline will I still have access rights?

Yes, most definitely! Net2 is designed to work

seamlessly in the event of communications failure. It will continue to permit or deny access to users as appropriate. Once communications are re-established the activity is reported back to the PC.

What is the process for returns?

The first port of call is to contact Paxton’s technical support team, available to help six days a week, 52 weeks a year. They will then assist with troubleshooting and if a unit is confirmed as faulty you simple return it to the distributor it was purchased from. All Paxton products are covered by Paxton’s five year warrantee and no quibble returns policy

South Africans accustomed to increasingly severe rolling electricity black-outs no doubt saw a ray of hope in the coming online in October last year of the Jasper Solar Energy

Project. The 96 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic power station is located near Kimberley, Northern Cape, counts Google as an investor and is set to power up to 80 000 electricity-starved South African homes.

Protecting the assets of often unmanned solar farms is where remote CCTV monitoring comes into its own. After being rolled-out in 2012 at two much smaller 33 MW solar farms, also in the Northern Cape, CCTV specialist TeleEye SA’s thermal imaging technology is now being used in surveillance applications at the Jasper installation.

To protect its valuable ground-mounted solar panel assets against unwanted intruders, the Jasper owners called upon TeleEye SA to best advise how its sophisticated video alarm monitoring and detection solutions, as well as its FLIR thermal imaging technology, could help secure the remote solar site.

Together, they came up with a master plan that would provide real-time monitoring day and night in order to efficiently deter unwanted intruders and prevent vandalism of a site that has definite national importance in light of South Africa’s current power supply challenges. In particular, SMAC-M multi-stream compression enables the TeleEye solution to ensure optimum performance on recording and live video monitoring simultaneously. The TeleEye sureSIGHT solution is also a highly scalable and sophisticated video management platform. It can be customised, in terms of the number of video monitoring terminals, multi-layer sitemap, video wall configuration, and more.

TeleEye South Africa, a local division of Hong Kong-based company TeleEye, has many years of experience in securing public utilities sites which enables 24/7 standalone and remote operation with real-time monitoring and recording.

For the Jasper solar plant, TeleEye provided a complete perimeter surveillance solution consisting of TeleEye optical cameras, FLIR thermal imaging cameras, video analytics, alarm verification and alarm management. The

solar plant perimeter has been secured with thermal imaging cameras from FLIR Systems and electric fencing.

Philip Smerkovitz, Managing Director of TeleEye South Africa, explains that FLIR thermal cameras deliver very accurate optics and image quality along with robustness, which is an important factor in the harsh temperatures of the sites they monitor. The Jasper installation is located in desert-like conditions where daytime temperatures of 40°C in summer are not uncommon.

FLIR thermal cameras allow monitoring day and night. Without any additional lighting, it is possible to detect intruders approaching the perimeter at night. The thermal camera’s ability to see in bright sunlight conditions was also important because sunlight can obviously be very bright in the Karoo desert. Glare from the sun may blind conventional video cameras, effectively hiding vehicles, people and animals.

Jasper is located in a solar park that also includes the 75MW Lesedi solar power project, which came online in May 2014. Lead sponsor of the Jasper consortium is SolarReserve, which develops utility-scale solar power projects and advanced solar thermal technology.

Google has a recent history of investing in wind and solar power, and since 2010 has committed to more than US$1 billion in renewable energy projects worldwide. Until 2013 little of this was spent on renewable energy in Africa. A new $12 million investment in the Jasper power project, at a project cost of approximately ZAR2.3 billion ($260 million) signals a change in policy. South Africa has a goal of having 18 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030.

Comair

Two South African companies, Mantis in the hotel business and Comair airline, will be playing a vital role in developing St Helena’s economy through increased communications

and the tourist industry, once the international airport is opened next February, according to the latest news from the British Overseas Territory in mid South Atlantic.

St Helena is famous among other things because emperor Napoleon spent his last years (1815/1821) and died in the island where he was sent in exile by Britain. The house he lived in, the gardens and the place where he was buried are part of a plot of land declared French territory with the tricolor flying.

Mantis, a collection of privately owned boutique hotels and eco escapes around the world, have been officially awarded the contract to develop and manage a new 4 star hotel on the island of St Helena. This is off the back of news that Comair has been awarded the first ever scheduled air services between Johannesburg and St Helena Airport.

In the presentation Mantis says that St Helena, one of the remotes places on earth (2.000 kilometers from any landmass) has an abundance of natural beauty, friendly people and fun-filled activities including Napoleonic sites and walks on land once occupied by prisoners of war during the Boer Wars.

“Jonathan, arguably the oldest tortoise in the world, enjoys life in the picturesque gardens of Plantation House, which is the governor’s official residence and a visit to St Helena also means exploring the scenic coastal and inland walks”.

An escorted tour in the island’s only Charabanc is a highlight, as is the stop at the top of Jacob’s Ladder which looks across to Jamestown. The museum in Jamestown explores the history of Britain’s second oldest colony in an informative and interesting way.A Mantis team including founder and chairman, Adrian Gardiner, visited the island in 2013 and identified Lower Jamestown as the location for the hotel, which will have 32 bedrooms, restaurant and bar facilities. Construction is due to start in July 2015, and the hotel is expected to open during the first half of 2016.

The island, a new tourism destination which is currently accessed by the last commercially operating Royal Mail Ship, is scheduled to open its first airport during early 2016, marking another important step in the evolution of St Helena Island. The 47 square mile island has a population of 4.247.

As to Comair it plans to fly once a week from Johannesburg. The flight on the 138-seat Boeing 737 will take four and half hours -- in stark contrast to the five days it currently takes on an irregular boat service from Cape Town.

“This marks a very positive step for St Helena in working with an airline... which provides an excellent gateway to the rest of the world,” the island government said in a statement.

Saint Helena was a busy stopover point between Europe, Asia and South Africa until steam ships and the Suez Canal changed sea routes. Comair, which has a licence agreement with British Airways, is a South African aviation company founded in 1946.

The Central Bank of Nigeria said that many customers are either unaware of the upcoming mandatory biometric registration or are experiencing complications, just weeks

away from the June deadline for all customers to register for their Bank Verification Number (BVN), according to a report by Naija 247 News.

The biometric registration system was launched in February 2014 by the former CBN governor Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

The system is designed to create a stronger Know Your Customer (KYC) for banks, reinforce the various security platforms, and allow more increased loans to customers.

Many customers are running into complications during the BVN registration, including the system repeatedly failing to acknowledge the completion of their registration.

The Nigeria Inter Bank Settlement System, which coordinates the collection of the biometric data, claims that customers would only have to submit their biometric data at one bank, regardless of how many accounts or banks they use.

However, some customers said they re-registered at each bank they have an account at because the system showed no record of their BVN.

“We still have to take the biometrics so that the data

can be synchronized and we are sure that it is the same person who is running both accounts,” said one bank official.

As such, those customers who have active accounts with up to five or more banks would have to register separately at all the banks.

“The issue of registering with more than one bank where you have accounts has been taken up and was discussed today and there are certain solutions that are being worked on,” Citi Bank CEO Omar Hafeez said at the last Bankers Committee Meeting held in Lagos last week.

“The objective has always been that you register with one bank and then communicate your BVN number to other banks that you may have accounts with.

“The objective is not that you go to every single bank and go through the process and that is what we are trying to work on. There will be some confusion at first but that will be sorted out. Issues will definitely come up, for example there is also the issue of how to get the BVN for those that do not reside in the country. We are all aware of the issues and we are working towards solutions on a very proactive basis.”

Previously reported, Nigeria’s presidential election was labelled the “cleanest vote ever” in the country’s post-colonial history, despite technical difficulties at polling stations.

SECURITY NEWS

SA April/May 201529

I t is a typical day, you are working at your desk and you hear the alarm sound – what do you do? You know that you should leave the building directly, via the nearest fire exit

and leave all your belongings behind. However, nobody else is moving, people are looking at each other, waiting for the first person to move.

“It’s probably a false alarm”… “Oh no, what now?”… “Someone will let me know if I need to do something”. People think of many reasons not to react – your colleagues, friends and family included.

People need to be guided, informed and reassured – clear spoken instructions by use of a reliable voice alarm system is now a well-established solution. Warnings and clear communication about the threat to life need to be immediate; they need to make people aware that the danger is real and that there is a need for action. The more information that the crowd can be provided with, the more likely they are to respond.

The use of a voice alarm system facilitates this by means of a combination of automatically triggered pre-recorded messages and live speech broadcast through prioritised, emergency, microphones. This makes it possible to direct people away from danger and to provide instructions such as which lifts are operational or stairwells to use.

A voice alarm system is ‘zonal’, thereby capable of broadcasting messages of ‘warning’ to some areas (i.e. an alert of possible need to take action) whilst instructing people in areas of immediate danger to

‘evacuate’. This zonal nature of the system is of particular importance for large, complex or high rise structures.

One benefit, which can be considered when installing a voice alarm system, is the ability to broadcast a coded message or advance ‘silent’ indicator which is used to make key staff aware up to three minutes prior to a full evacuation instruction. This is the ‘first knock’ ability which is liked by management (and the fire services) as it can prevent a full scale evacuation when the alarm is either a false one or is a minor incident that can be dealt with without consequence.

Contrary to popular belief, a voice alarm system does not have to consist of large, floor standing, rack enclosure(s) – it can be fully contained in specially designed wall-mounted box(es). The smaller size, however, does not necessarily mean that there has to be a compromise on quality or benefits. Consider Baldwin Boxall’s VIGIL Eclipse3 system. Not only is this system convenient in size (wall-mountable and fully self-contained), it also has a modular design, making it incredibly flexible. The unit uses the same DSP-controlled router as for the manufacturer’s largest systems, meaning it has the same features – most notable is the fact that it multiple units can be easily networked.

Being modular, VIGIL Eclipse3 can be adapted to suit the specific needs for any installation – from small, single-zone applications, to the largest multi-level, multi-zoned towers. As an example, the VIGIL Eclipse3, in the UK, has been installed in everything from local

Sainsburys supermarkets to The Shard, London (at 310 metres The Shard is one of the tallest buildings in Western Europe).

Peter Allan, G2 Security, South Africa, commented, “Some of the largest buildings in the world now adopt a modular approach to control and security systems – this does not need to be different for voice alarm. The Eclipse3 is such a versatile unit that needs limited space and is fully networkable. Not only does the system have all the features we need (and more), it comes with the knowledge that it has been designed and built by one of the most respected manufacturers in the industry.”

Another factor to be considered when assessing a building or structure, are the needs of those that are less able to ‘self-evacuate’. People that are physically impaired, not only wheelchair users, but elderly, those with loss of sight, expectant mothers and so on, could find it difficult to exit in a hurry without assistance. It is also possible that with their slower progress, they will become overwhelmed/knocked over by others – endangering themselves and others.

The solution for this is the use of ‘refuge areas’ and ‘emergency voice communication (EVC)’ systems. EVC systems were introduced to the UK fifteen years ago (Baldwin Boxall being the first manufacturer to design and market this type of system) and are being increasingly adopted by Europe, with popularity gradually spreading to the rest of the world. In brief, a ‘refuge area’ is a place near an evacuation lift or somewhere that provides an exit route from a building.

The area should be designed in such a way that it is fire resistant and of a size which is suitable to turn a wheelchair – without impeding the path of any other occupants of the building. In the UK the British Standard (BS9999) defines the need and specification for a refuge area.

With an EVC system, each refuge area is fitted with an ‘outstation’ which provides a means of ‘hands free’ communication with building control. Upon arrival to the refuge area the occupant, or assistant, operates the button on the outstation to indicate that the area is ‘occupied’ and calls the operator of the control panel. This provides the ability to reassure the occupant and keep them fully informed. This is a ‘disabled refuge system’.

A good EVC system (such as CARE2) is not limited to the one use, it has added functionality – such as the addition of fire telephones, emergency/steward telephones and disabled toilet alarms. The fire telephones are usually used as an additional aid during the evacuation of a building. They tend to be used by fire officers as a means of communication between the operator of the control panel and different levels in the building. Fire officers will work through the building and typically use the system to report back on a level-by-level basis that an area is clear.

Nigel Bateman, Export Manager for Baldwin Boxall, commented “We believe that the requirement for EVC systems will increase as people become more aware that this type of system is available, and the advantages that it provides.”

Palabora Copper (Palabora) has acquired two more 3500kW York CYK Compound Centrifugal chillers from Johnson Controls. The latest purchase is part of Phase

II of PC’s ventilation and cooling strategy to facilitate expansion of its operations to 1,600 meters, an initiative that commenced in 2012 and will extend the life of the mine to 2030.

Says Gavin Meredith, Manager – ventilation, cooling and water handling at Palabora Copper: “As of February 2015 we are working 450 meters below the 1,200 meter lift where the first two CYK chillers were installed in 2013 and 2014. These next two chillers will also be installed at 1,200m, providing us with the cooling capacity we need to safely develop and mine the new level.”

The CYK chiller installation at Palabora is the first of its kind in Africa, and the first underground installation globally. By installing the chillers underground, the mine reduces the need to pump water to the surface for cooling. Upcast air is used to reject heat in underground cooling towers and cool air is blown down to the work face from 1,200m. But the operation also distinguishes itself in other ways. Says Meredith: “Palabora is a pioneer in terms of copper mining, firstly because of the depth at which

we are mining, and secondly in terms of the hard rock block cave mining method we employ - the composition of the rock being unusually hard for this type of mining which impacts operations and conditions underground. Our ventilation and cooling strategy – and the performance of the chillers – is instrumental in allowing us to achieving safe development of the mine at this depth. To date, the performance of the chillers has been above faceplate specification.”

The CYK chiller technology was a key deciding factor for Palabora Copper in its selection of a solution. At 1,650m, 50m deeper than initially targeted, virgin rock temperatures in the mine are 52 degrees Celsius. This environment requires chillers to operate beyond the limits found in typical air-conditioning applications. The YORK CYK water-cooled centrifugal chillers are designed using two centrifugal compressors arranged in series to handle conditions outside the range of typical centrifugal chillers.

Explains Russell Hattingh, Branch Manager Engineered Systems at Johnson Controls Building Efficiency, South Africa: “Extreme conditions are characterized by leaving chilled fluid temperatures below 2°C, leaving condensing fluid temperatures above 41°C, or a combination of both. When the leaving chilled fluid or leaving condenser fluid temperature exceeds standard limits, the lift on the compressor increases dramatically.

Johnson Controls wins deal Palabora Copper buys two more 3.5MW York CYK chillers from Johnson Controls as it reaches 1,650m

COMMODITIES

SA April/May 2015 34

The compressor must develop higher differential pressure on the refrigerant gas in the compression phase, which results in higher head pressure.

The CYK chiller overcomes these compressor-design challenges by using the principle of compounding. A compound design arranges two individual compressors in series. By flowing the refrigerant gas through two compressors, the pressure ratio becomes the sum of the two individual centrifugal compression ratios. The result is a much higher total lift pressure available to the system, which is able to handle the high head demanded by extreme conditions.”

Notes Meredith: “Johnson Controls was the only company that could offer us a high head, high capacity, industrial type machine fit for the mining environment with additional customised features like specialised PLC technology that integrated with our SCADA system.”

The first chiller has been operational for just over a year and has performed well, the second is due to be commissioned in July 2015. The next two chillers will be assembled and commissioned in early 2016 by a Johnson Controls team, with a Palabora team taking over maintenance.

Says Meredith: “This will provide us with the necessary 14MW capacity we need. A fifth chiller, which is likely

to be ordered at the end of 2016 and installed in early 2017, will provide failover capacity, completing the installation.”
