1.1 Introduction
The purpose of this Staff Information Booklet is to draw together many of the key organisational
issues that affect the running of the Academy. The information contained in the booklet may
inevitably change as the year progresses. Updates will be provided on the Academy Intranet under various headings: please check for these updates regularly.
The Booklet is for all staff: teaching and support staff, but obviously some sections will be more
relevant to you than others.
All Academy policies are listed in Section 5 of this Booklet. Copies of the policies are kept with my PA and Clerk to the Governors, Cathy Ryan and can also be found on the Academy Intranet under
Staff Handbook.
May I take this opportunity to welcome all staff back to the 2013/2014 Academic Year and wish

Sports Academy Status
Paignton Community and Sports Academy is one of many hundreds of specialist sports Academies in the Country. Its role is to spread best practice and raise standards.
Specialist Sports Status involves a clear expectation the specialism will drive whole school and community improvement in PE and Sport.
As a Sports Academy Paignton will aim to:
raise attainment for all students both in Physical Education and across the whole curriculum;
strengthen and develop the quality of teaching and learning strategies in Physical Education and use them to help raise standards throughout the school;
extend opportunities for vocational learning and enrichment activity through Physical Education and Sport, including through links with sponsors, business, employers, further
and higher education institutions and organisations related to the specialism;
develop within the school, characteristics which signal its specialist ethos and identity and which are reflected in the school’s mission and objectives – including through
encouragement of increased take-up and interest in Physical Education and Sport; strengthen collaboration with partner schools, primary and secondary, to provide or
facilitate high quality learning opportunities and outcomes in Physical Education–by
sharing specialist facilities and resources, enhancing further the quality of teaching and developing and disseminating good practice; and
provide or facilitate high quality learning opportunities and outcomes in specialist subjects for the school’s wider local community, including local businesses and
employers.
As an Academy with Specialist Sports Academy status, Paignton is dedicated to raising whole school
standards by improving the quality and provision of sports and physical activity. This commitment to high quality sports provision extends to all members of the community in addition to the students
and staff who attend the school.

1.7 ACADEMY MANAGEMENT
The names of all Academy staff can be found in this Handbook together with a brief explanation of
what they teach and their job role: all teaching staff are known by their initials, which are used on the timetable. The main leaders and managers in the Academy are as follows:
Executive (Exec)
You will hear a great deal about Exec – who are they? They are the Principal, Jane English and
Deputy Principals, Mark Smith and Jason Trevarthen. Exec meets once a week at Waterleat Road, on a Monday afternoon, to discuss current issues concerning the Academy and also to discuss any
issues brought to it by members of staff. This includes permission for time off duties: to attend courses, medical appointments or personal appointments and holiday time for full time support
staff.
Leadership Team
You will need to know who forms the Leadership Team of the Academy, sometimes called Planning and Development. If you have a clerical position you will almost certainly have to distribute
documents to them. There is a structure diagram of the members of the Leadership Team together
with their position and the site on which they are based in this Handbook. Essentially they are the Principal, Deputy Principals, Assistant Principals, Associate Principals and the Director of Finance.
Heads of Centre
Heads of Centre are responsible for the day to day running of the two sites. Andrew Thomas is
Head of Waterleat Road Centre and Mark Smith is Head of Centre at Borough Road.
Key Stage Managers
Helen Wilkinson carries out Key Stage Manager responsibilities at Key Stage 3 on Waterleat Road
Centre and Tim Willcocks, is responsible for Key Stages 4 and 5 at Borough Road Centre.
Their role is to oversee the progress of pupils across their Key Stages and line-manage the Heads of
Year. They have an overview of all pupil issues within their Key Stage/s.
Year Leaders
Each Year Leader is supported by a Pastoral Manager. Their role is to oversee the academic and pastoral needs of the pupils in their Year Group.

There are seven faculties in the Academy –a detailed diagram is contained in this Handbook.
1.8 Information about the Governing Body
Governors
The Governing Body of the Academy is a mixture of parents, staff, Prospects and community
representatives, 15 people in total (we have vacancies at the present time), and it meets regularly in Full Governors’ Meetings and in Committee Meetings:
