Stewardship
On November 27th, Deacon Richard Dalu-
ga was called home by our Lord. Ordained
by Bishop Daniel Reilly on April 22, 1995,
Deacon Daluga served here at Saint Mary
of the Assumption Parish for nine years
until 2004 when he and his family moved to
Henderson, NV, where he was active in the
Saint Thomas More Catholic Community
there.
Deacon Daluga’s ministry here is remembered with great affec-
tion for his friendly and warm manner and his engaging presence
in our community for so many years. His move to Nevada was a
great loss, and his death is a loss for his family and the Church.
His death reminds us that the gift of a true steward is immeasura-
ble and lives on long after our presence has faded. Though it has
been almost fifteen years since Deacon Daluga left our parish, he
is still remembered and admired for the faith that he and his wife
Patricia lived here among us. The gift of one’s time, talent and
treasure is a gift not simply to people of faith, but a gift back to
God from whom all these good gifts originate.
The death of our brother reminds us of the importance to be stew-
ards in this life. The sharing of our gifts from God is an opportuni-
ty that changes not only the lives we touch but our own lives as
well. Deacon Daluga was a faithful steward in so many ways. A
graduate of West Point, and later returning to be an instructor
there, Deacon Daluga spent a large part of his life in a career in the
military, serving our country in combat and in peace for which he
was recognized and honored by our country.
His funeral will take place in Henderson, NV next Saturday, De-
cember 15th. May he rest in peace. Well done good and faithful serv-
ant, enter to the rest prepared from the foundation of the world.
Requiescat en Pacem In your kindness, please remember the following deceased
parishioners and family and friends of parishioners who have
recently died,
Sean Casey Enos-Robertson, Mary Elizabeth McKinnon
Deacon Richard Daluga (formerly assigned to our parish) and
Joaquina Antunes
May their souls, and the souls of all the faithfully departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Second Sunday in Advent December 9, 2018
1st Reading Old Testament : Baruch 5:1-9 (6C) 2nd Reading New Testament: Philippians 1:4--6, 8-11 Gospel: Luke 3:1-6
Our meditation: “And this is my prayer: that your love may in-crease ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value…” PHILIPPIANS 1:9-10 Our response: Glittery holiday ads can blind us to our steward-ship values and distort our needs and wants. It is important that during this season of endless buying we remember that each of us also has the need to give back to God and to those that are in need.
.Tell Me, “Why … ?” Why is the image of Guadalupe so special? During the 20th century, extensive scientific studies
were performed on the image of the tilma of Saint Juan
Diego to determine its origin. The tilma is made of plant
fiber, much like paper, though of a stronger consistency
and was used by the native Aztecs of Mexico as an outer
coat. The tilma of Juan Diego was made from two piec-
es joined down the middle with an obvious seam. The
first remarkable reality of the tilma is that though now
nearly 500 years old, it is preserved in the original condi-
tion when the image appeared in 1531. If paper were
487 years old; one would not expect it to be in its origi-
nal condition. In the early 20th century, a Mexican revo-
lutionary detonated a bomb beneath the image that man-
gled a silver candelabra while the image was untouched.
The second starting reality of the image is the coloring.
It is not paint, it is not chalk; no one really knows the
materials that the image is produced from. And then
there is the message in the image. While there is a seam
that runs down the exact middle of the tilma and the im-
age is perfectly centered, the head of Our Lady is slightly
bowed so that her face is untouched by the seam.
The image of Our Lady is a gospel in itself. She is
pregnant, the cincture at her waist indicating that she is
pregnant with a divine child. Standing in front of the sun
and on the moon, she indicates that she is greater than
the gods the Aztecs worship, but that she is not God
since her head is bowed and her hands are folded in
prayer. Her mantle is covered with the stars of the sky.
A scientist discovered only fifty years ago that they are
not random, but in the pattern of the constellations over
Mexico in December, with the particular distinction that
they are arranged as if one were on the other side of the
stars and looking down to, not looking up from the earth.
Lastly, a microscopic investigation of the tilma in the
1960s revealed that in the retinas of the eyes of the im-
age, there is a reflection, what appears to be 3 figures
kneeling before the image. This fits the description of
the saint that when he opened his tilma for the roses giv-
en by the beautiful lady, Bishop Zumárraga and his two
aides knelt immediately. This would seem to indicate if
we wanted a photograph of Our Lady, we would find it
in the image of Guadalupe from December 12th in 1531.
That is one reason this image and feast is so special.
Winter Weather Reminder: Please Note
When school has been cancelled due to inclement weather, daily Mass will NOT be celebrated! If school should be delayed due to inclement weather, Mass will be celebrated in the Parish Center Chapel at 9 am. This allows our workers to concentrate on the parking areas and the entrance to the center rather than on all the entrances to the Church.
We’re Looking to Organize a Christmas Festival Choir
Anyone (ages 17 and up) who is interested is invited to be part of a special Christmas Festival Choir that will lead our music ministry at the Midnight Mass. All are welcome to join... no experience necessary... only the desire to sing praise to God! Rehearsals will be scheduled according to
the availability of choir members. Please contact Jonathan Capece at

A Message from Father Peter Dear Parishioners,
Parish Information

A Message from Father Peter Dear Parishioners,
This week our Church marks the anniversary of the apparitions of Our
Lady to a young native prince on the hill of Tepeyac outside of the present
day Mexico City. This prince was a convert to Catholicism who was very
devout and attended daily Mass. On December 9th, as he made his way to
church, he heard beautiful music as he crossed Tepeyac and went to
investigate. It was there he saw for the first time, ‘the beautiful lady.’ She
called Juan Diego by his name and asked him to go to the local bishop and
instruct him to build a shrine to her on that very site. After Mass, he did as
she had asked, but the bishop was a busy man and not interested in the
requests of a native convert. He waited all day and when ushered into the
bishop’s presence was dismissed out of hand. The next day, the same
events occurred, only this time the bishop asked Juan Diego to bring him a
sign that this request was truly heaven sent and legitimate. As he left, the
bishop sent his aides to follow Juan Diego to find out what he was up to.
However, they lost track of him and reported to the bishop that he had
eluded them. Disappointed and angry, he felt he was done with this local
troublemaker, and perhaps hoped that asking for sign, it would be last he
would be bothered by this princely Juan Diego.
On December 11th, Juan Diego’s uncle took sick and he stayed home to
care for him. Early on the 12th, his uncle asked him to get the priest to
come and celebrate the sacraments for he felt that he was dying. With an
urgency to bring a priest to his uncle and not wanting to be delayed in this
task coupled with the disappointment he felt in asking for a sign, Juan
Diego took a different route over the hill of Tepeyac. Nevertheless, the
beautiful lady was there, waiting for him in the middle of his path. She
questioned if he was trying to avoid her, and he admitted that he was and
gave her his reasons. She reassured him that his uncle would be fine, and
that she had every confidence in him, that she had chosen wisely and
carefully and he was her desired ambassador. For the bishop’s sign she
instructed him to go over and pick the roses growing there to bring them
back for her to arrange in his tilma. As she did, she instructed him to show
the roses to no one but the bishop. He repeated her request and confident
in her assurances, made his way to the bishop’s office. Detained all day
again, he refused to show the roses to anyone but Bishop Zumárraga. At
the end of the day when he opened his tilma, the flowers fell to the floor
and there on his tilma was the image of the beautiful lady we know today
as Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Once the native people saw the image, they came in the thousands to be
baptized. Until then, the Spaniards had considered the natives inferior and
unworthy of the gospel and sacraments. They renounced their pagan
beliefs and became devout Catholics to the sacraments. The image is a
visual catechism to the Aztecs and a reminder to us of the value of every
human being. For, Our Lady appears pregnant with our Savior, a hard truth
to challenge their pagan practice to sacrifice infants to their gods. This
practice seems barbaric and primitive unless we recognize that this image
reminds us in our own time of the sacredness of every life, challenging us
when the unborn are sacrificed to the altars of individualism, sexual
permissiveness and convenience. The image challenges an understanding
of native and foreigner when we realize that Our Lady appeared to this
native prince as her humble and obedient messenger because her ordained
ministers in the Church were failing to preach and baptize the local people
stubbornly steeped in their prejudice and superiority as Europeans.
Almost 500 years later, we are still in need of this heavenly visitor to call
us beyond the narrow-minded realities of this world to the truth that every
life is sacred and that every person has a place in the Kingdom of God.
Pope Saint John Paul II named Our Lady of Guadalupe as patroness of the
Americas. Join our Latina community this Wednesday, early or late, to
celebrate this special feast!

Books to Enjoy During Advent
Advent and Christmas Wisdom is indeed an easy-to-use, daily program to celebrate the momentous arrival of the Christ Child and the joyous news of our salvation. It is also an ideal book for the individual seeking active participation in the season and a renewal of faith for the start of the liturgi-cal year.
God s in the Manger
"There are only two places
where the powerful and great in this world lose their cour-age, tremble in the depths of their souls, and become truly afraid. These are the manger and the cross of Jesus
Christ."
"No priest, no theologian stood at the cradle of Bethle-hem. And yet, all Christian theology finds its beginnings in the miracle of miracles, that God became hu-man."
Most Christians agree that Christmas is all about Jesus, yet most of us spend little time preparing our hearts to celebrate Him. Why is this? Partly because we don’t know how.
In Unwrapping the Names of Jesus, Asheritah Ciuciu leads readers through the
four weeks of Advent (Hope, Preparation, Joy, and Love).

Did You Know? Learn to “Stop” Inappropriate Activity Before It Happens Child safety tip: Teach your child to respect the word “stop!”
Teach your preschooler that “stop” means “stop,” and that your
child has the right to stop people from touching his or her body.
Obviously, exceptions will have to be made for doctors and par-
ents, but even parents must listen when a child doesn’t want to
be tickled or hugged anymore. Reinforcing this excellent lesson
gives your child the power to recognize—and to stop—“bad
touching” by others if it should happen. For particular help, you
may call: Worcester Diocese, Office for Healing and Prevention

If you are aware of an incident of sexual misconduct and the sus-pected offender is a priest, deacon, candidate, seminarian, reli-gious, lay minister, employee or volunteer, you are encouraged to report the matter to the Diocese of Worcester. The report can be made by phone, contact Judith Audette at the Office of Healing and Prevention, (508-929-4363) or in writing, and sent to the Of-fice for Healing and Prevention, 49 Elm St., Worcester, MA. 01609.

História da coroa do Advento
Essa coroa é originária dos países nórdicos (países
escandinavos, Alemanha), a qual contém raízes
verdadeiro sentido do Natal. E, nós, podemos cair nessa, mas é possível
dar presente e celebrar o verdadeiro sentido: o Menino Jesus é o nosso
grande presente!
