Second Grade Science Fair Project: Animal Habitat Diorama
Objective: To help your child learn about an animal, its habitat, and what it needs to survive. Project: Each student will research an assigned animal, its habitat, and what that animal needs to do to survive. There are three parts to this project:
1. Diorama (completed at home) 2. Written report (completed at school) 3. Presentation
Project: Part 1 – Diorama
Turn an empty box (large shoebox or other type box of your choosing) on its side so you can see into the box. This will be the stage for your display.
Cover the outside of the box so the original box
design/logo (Nike, UPS, Home Depot, Kohl’s, etc.) isn’t visible. Students may leave the outside covering plain or decorate to support the diorama. Neatly write your name and number on the outside back wall of the diorama so it isn’t visible when displayed. Students will create a sign for the diorama in school.
Create the animal’s habitat inside the shoebox. You may
use any material that is safe and helps you create the habitat for your animal. Create examples of the plants and animals and place them in the habitat, as they would be naturally. Arrange the materials in the diorama to create your habitat display.
Students may use plastic or vinyl toys for their animal, mold
from clay or Play-Do, or use pictures. Suggested materials are paint, crayons, markers, magazines, plastic toys, popsicle sticks, toothpicks, construction paper, fake plants, sticks, leaves, twigs, grass, tissue paper, fabric, cotton, Styrofoam, etc. No liquids are allowed.
Second Grade Science Fair Project: Animal Habitat Diorama
Students may have adult help, but the diorama should be
the student’s work. Be creative! Don’t forget that your diorama project needs:
- The habitat shown using the shoebox. - The animal assigned. - Objects to show plants and environment. - Outside of box covered so labels/logos are not visible. - Name and number neatly written on the outside back
wall of the diorama. Project: Part 2 – Written report
Each student will write a report on his/her assigned animal. This report will be done mostly during school, but some work may be sent home if needed.
Students will also need to research the animal at home
and are allowed and encouraged to bring books and printed materials to school to help them write their reports. Students will need to bring research materials to school on assigned day(s). (See calendar.) Project: Part 3 – Presentation
Each student will give a small presentation to the class about his/her animal and its habitat using their report. This will help prepare them for the Science Fair on Wednesday, March 16. All dioramas are due Friday, March 11 when the student arrives at school. (You may send it in early starting Monday, March 7.)
Have fun and be creative! Miss Kelly
