Art

• Construct a handbag: Using an empty cereal box or any cuboid shaped box, try to create a handbag. Look around your home for materials. You will need something to use for the handles, some items to decorate the exterior of the bag, perhaps you might be able to make a small purse to pop into your bag. Have fun and be creative and don’t forget to email us a photo of your wonderful creations. Here is a sample of some bags made from cereal boxes to help you get started.

• Pointillism: using a cotton bud and some paint see what images you can create under the theme of nature. (Flowers, butterflies, animals, trees, insects). Here is an example:

• Challenge Close your eyes and draw a self- portrait without opening

your eyes. You might like to try this with members of your family for some fun. Music:

• Project: Choose one animal from the list below and research that animal. Find out why the animal is endangered? Where the animal can be found, what the animal likes to eat and 10 other interesting facts. You could present your work on a sheet, in a scrap or on a poster. Whatever way you like. List of endangered animals: Elephants, tigers, sea turtles, koalas, leopards, polar bears.

• Make a fairy garden: using materials you can find around your home, try to create a small fairy garden. It could be in a corner of your garden, in a flower pot or on a windowsill. Have a go and see could you make a door, a table, a stool/chair and a bed for the fairy to sleep in. Remember everything in it should be small. We would love to see what you can create.

• Experiment Make a bouncy egg

In this experiment, you will try to turn a regular raw egg into a bouncy egg. The result will hopefully be an egg that feels rubbery (like a bouncy ball) and does actually bounce. When you are testing it out, just be sure not to bounce it too high unless you are ready for a messy result! Adult supervision required.

Materials: one raw egg, vinegar, glass bowl/jar

Step 1: Get a raw egg and carefully place it into a glass or jar

Step 2: Fill the glass with white vinegar until the egg is completely submerged

Step 3: Leave the egg in the glass for 1-3 days. Each day check on the egg. When the egg has started to become translucent you will know it is ready.

Step 4: Remove the egg from the glass and rinse it under some tap water. While rinsing the egg gently rub the outside of the egg and the white film will come off leaving you will a translucent egg.

Step 5: Examine the egg. You’ll notice that is feels rubbery (like a bouncy ball). Then lift the egg 1-2 inches in the air, let go and watch it bounce.

When you have finished the experiment fill in the box below.

Did your egg bounce? How many days did you leave the egg in the vinegar for? Would you try this experiment again? Would you do anything differently next time?

Muna’s Life

My name is Muna. I am eight years old and I live in the countryside in Ethiopia. I live with my parents and my three sisters and three brothers. We live in a small two room hut called a tukul. It is thatched and made from mud and wood. I wake up at 6.30 am and I start school at 7.30 am. Before class begins we gather in the playground to exercise, sing the national anthem and pray. School ends at 3pm. When I get home I help my mother by sweeping the house and fetching water. We carry the water on our heads or backs. For dinner my family eat the injera and stew that I cook with my sister. Injera is bread that looks like a pancake. It is made from teff (a type of wheat.) We often have coffee after dinner, even the children. Write down two differences between your life and Muna’s life. 1._____________________________________________ 2._____________________________________________

Grow in Love workbook

Read the stories/poem below and complete pages 40 and 41 in your Grow in Love book.

Jesus is Betrayed by Judas (Taken from the Grow in Love programme)

There were some people who did not like Jesus. They didn’t want to listen to the things he said about God. They didn’t want to share the love of God with other people. So, they decided to get rid of Jesus. They made a plan to catch him and hand him over to the local soldiers.

Jesus knew that he was going to die, so he decided that he would eat his last Passover meal with his friends. After the meal, Jesus and some of his apostles went to a nearby garden to pray. While they were there, a crowd of the people who did not like Jesus came into the garden. Judas, one of Jesus’ apostles, was with them. The crowd did not recognise Jesus, but Judas did. He knew that he could point Jesus out to the people.

So, Judas walked up to Jesus, and went to give him a kiss on the cheek as a sign that he was the one that the people were looking for. Jesus’ other apostles saw what was going to happen, so they asked Jesus if they should use their swords to try and hold the crowd back. But Jesus said no, Because Judas had shown the crowd who Jesus was, the soldiers took him away.

Peter Denies Knowing Jesus

When Jesus was taken away by the crowd, Peter followed behind them. A fire had been lit in the centre of the courtyard, and Peter joined those who were sitting around it. A woman, who was a servant, saw Peter sitting there, and she looked straight at him and said “This man is one of Jesus’ followers.”

Peter told her she was wrong. “I don’t even know him” he said. After a little while another man came along. He too noticed Peter and said “You are one of his apostles!” Again Peter told the man he was mistaken, replying “I am not.”

About an hour later, another man came along. He was sure he recognised Peter and he said “This man was definitely with Jesus, He is from the area between the Sea of Gaililea too.” Peter answered “I don’t know what you are talking about.” Just then a rooster crowed ‘Cock a doodle do’

Jesus, who was being held by prison guards, looked straight at Peter. Peter realised that he had denied Jesus by saying three times that he did not know him. Peter left the courtyard, went outside and started to cry.

Poem ‘Stations of the Cross’

While the apostles flee afraid,

Jesus is by a kiss, betrayed.

By Pilate and Chief Priests condemned,

Denied then by his oldest friend.

The rough lash, the thorny crown,

The heavy cross that weighs him down.

Simon helps him bear the load

Past weeping women on the road.

On Calvary is crucified,

With a thief on either side.

Speaks to Mary and to John,

This is your Mother, this is your son.

At last beneath the darkening skies,

Alone upon the cross he dies.

Brought down and in the gathering gloom,

Laid gently in a borrowed tomb.
