Edward Alleyn’s Gift

The three Dulwich Foundation Schools Alleyn’s, Dulwich College and JAGS will come together on 16 March 2016 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the consecration of Christ’s Chapel of

God’s Gift at Dulwich.Over 450 pupils, alumni, teachers, parents

and members of the local community will perform Verdi’s choral masterpiece, the Requiem Mass at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall. They will be joined by internationally recognised soloists Jane Irwin (Soprano), Louise Callinan (Mezzo Soprano), David Butt Philip (Tenor) and Rodney Earl Clarke, Old Alleynian (Bass).

Verdi’s Requiem is a masterpiece of late 19th century composition and the programme will also include Verdi’s Pater Noster which will be performed by all those singing and playing. The concert will be

conducted by the three Directors of Music: Mr Chris Dearmer, Mr Richard Mayo and Mr Peter Gritton.

Christ’s Chapel in Dulwich was consecrated in 1616 by George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury, as part of the Dulwich College foundation. Edward Alleyn built his College of God’s Gift on Dulwich Green and since then the Chapel has been a place of worship for the local community and for the three Dulwich Schools of the Foundation; Alleyn’s, Dulwich College and JAGS.

The Heads of the three Foundation Schools, Dr Gary Savage of Alleyn’s, Dr Joe Spence of Dulwich College, and Sally-Anne Huang of JAGS, anticipate this wonderful occasion will be an opportunity for the wider communities of the three schools to come together and celebrate in music. All are welcome and tickets are available through Southbank Centre. 0844 8479910 or www.southbankcentre.co.uk

Hectic Host

Mother’s Day

Russia’s version of Mother’s Day, a holiday for women on an otherwise normal working day. If she is more of a Mimosa mum, you can even up the ante a little more with the addition of a dash of Grand Marnier; a Grand Mimosa. Given that the Mimosa is so named because of the colour of the fruit used it would be difficult to vary this without changing the cocktail completely. Freshly squeezed clementine juice is a sweet and delicious alternative which still retains the integrity of the cocktail’s colour inspired name.

Either drink should be served in a tall Champagne flute into which both chilled ingredients are combined. If the kids want to join in the fun, or non-drinkers or drivers, the most elegant alternative is swapping the booze with dry ginger, which is less syrupy and a little more sparklingly effervescent that lemonades and soda. Happy Mother’s Day!

Lawrence Roullier Whitewww.roullierwhite.com

The pampering of mums should not be restricted to one day a year, but for that one Sunday in March failure to make that little extra effort will not go unnoticed. Some dads and co-mums are better

equipped than others with the necessary kitchen skills so as always I advise keeping it simple.

I would suggest forsaking the full-on cooked Sunday lunch for a far simpler brunch. As the portmanteau describes, it is the meal that should sit somewhere between breakfast and lunch, around noon on a Sunday seems the most civilised. Although we think of brunch as a modern American innovation, it is believed to be a British invention; the Smithsonian traces the first use of the word to 1985. It is thought that the meal gained popularity post war in the US diners, which with more women working in the 1950s became popular family weekend destinations.

A staple of all diner menus is Eggs Benedict and Delia Smith’s recipe is by far the simplest. Grill some pancetta until crispy, pile onto a buttered toasted muffin halves (I am rather partial to the thick light ones from the General Store on Bellenden Road, where incidentally you can pick up the most delicious Bakewell Tarts for tea), top with a poached egg and spoon over a generous helping of shop (yes shop) bought hollandaise sauce (there is a great one, indistinguishable from homemade, from F. C. Soper on Evelina Road in Nunhead). Pop under the grill for 20 seconds and away you go.

Buck’s Fizz and Mimosas are always associated with Sunday brunch and they are often mistakenly believed to be the same drink. A Mimosa is equal parts Champagne and orange juice and a Bucks Fizz is two parts orange juice and one-part Champagne. You will probably have a good idea if the mum in question is more Mimosa than Buck’s Fizz. The Buck’s Fizz was invented in London’s Buck’s Club in 1921. The Mimosa is named after the blossom of the Mimosa Tree, which was interestingly given to women on International Working Women’s Day – communist

to be different shapes and sizes so they don't create 1 single layer and the egg mix can get in between all the pieces of potato and onion.5) Add the potato pieces and onion chunks to the "Hot" (not boiling) oil and fry until soft (not golden).6) While the onions and potatoes are cooking, beat your eggs in a metal bowl and set aside.7) Once the potatoes are cooked, using a slotted spoon, remove them from the oil and add to the egg mix.8) Remove all the oil from the tortilla pan - be careful this will be hot! Then return to the heat and add all of the egg, onion and potato mix to the pan and gently stir.9) Once it starts to look like very loose scrambled egg, leave it alone to set.10) After a few minutes it will be cooked enough for you to turn over! This is the scary bit but be brave!11) Invert a plate just bigger than the pan over the top, placing one hand on the pan handle and one hand on the plate, then in one swift movement flip it over.12) Now slide the tortilla back in the pan and cook the other side.13) Once both sides are golden brown and the centre is cooked to your liking it is ready to serve with a delicious fresh salad.Don't tell Natalia, but a delicious twist on this would be to add some fresh red chilli and fresh thyme and then finish off by grating some Manchego cheese over the top whilst it is still warm.

Method1) Get your pan on the heat warming with the oil to deep fry the potatoes and onions.2) Peel the potatoes and keep in salted water while you turn your attention to the onions.3) Peel the onions, then very roughly cut them into eights - they need to stay quite large so they don't get lost in the tortilla.4) Using a small very knife, carefully slice the potatoes into thin random shape pieces, they need

Garden Talk

Barbara Samitier - Garden Designerwww.barbarasamitiergardens.co.uk

Ferns are an intriguing, versatile and very useful group of plants for which my love has grown over the years. I couldn’t contemplate making a garden without them these days. They are very adaptable plants and come

very handy for these dry shade corners where not much else would grow. They are the perfect solution to underplant trees, to add texture and movement to shade or semi shade borders and to soften a path or a patio’s edge.

They evoque walks in woodland’s dappled shade, and somehow speak to us of a time when the world was densely wooded and wild things roamed. They also bring a sense of calm, I’m not sure why. Always plant in a group as they would in the wild, as they look best this way but also will thrive by improving each others growing conditions. Some ferns don’t mind the sun too much but don’t put them in sunny borders, they will look out of place and their delicate foliage will get scorched.Deciduous ferns look unsightly in autumn so do mix with evergreen ones but don’t exclude them altogether as watching their fronds unfurling before your eyes every spring is a formidable spectacle not to be missed.

My Favourite Evergreen FernsBlechnum spicant - Perfect to underplant pine trees and conifers as they like acid soil.

Dryopteris affinis “Cristata” - A cultivar of the native male fern, Dryopteris affinis, found in woodlands in wetter parts of Britain, this is a handsome, shuttlecock fern that keeps its leaves almost all year.

Polystichum proliferum - A native of Britain, with soft, dark green fronds that emerge upright before unfurling and falling open. Either cut back the old foliage in early January to allow space for spring bulbs, or leave them in place until April when the new fronds appear.

Asplenium scolopendrium - Known as Harts tongue ferns, they need a cool shady corner to thrive. In the wild they are seen growing in crevices in rocks and stone walls with very little compost.

My Favourite Deciduous FernsOsmunda regalis or Royal fern - also called sometimes flowering fern due the appearance of its fertile fronds.

The Formidable Ferns

Dryopteris filix femina - A native, male fern found naturally in moist woodlands around the UK. This large, handsome fern has feathery, green fronds which form a distinctive, shuttlecock shape and turn coppery in autumn.

Athyrium filix femina, or lady fern - is a graceful fern with feathery and lacy, more delicate fronds than its male counterpart.

Dryopteris wallichiana - A tough, hardy fern that is native to the Himalayas. In spring, it produces bright green, shuttlecock-like fronds on upright, hairy stems, up to 90cm high. Less fine in appearance than many other ferns, it nonetheless makes a dramatic statement in a woodland garden or under deciduous trees.

Dicksonia antartica or tree fern - are great to add drama or introduce a bit of exotic to your garden. They are very slow growing however and very expansive, require winter protection but are worth it in the right place.

The Winning CombinationsHere are some tried and tested winning plants combos: Matteucia struttoptheris is a great punctuation within a carpet of Asarum europaeum.

Osmunda regalis and gunneras in bog gardens in large gardens.

Blechnum spicant leathery glossy fronds compliment Pachysandra terminalis glossy leaves to form an elegant evergreen groundcover.

Athyrium filix femina creates a perfect foil for Geranium “Blue Johnson”.

Thursday 10 March: Displacements with Ben Rawlence 7.30pmTickets are £6 and are fully redeemable against a purchase of City of Thorns. Over the course of four years, Ben Rawlence became a first-hand witness to a strange and desperate limbo-land. To the charity workers, Dadaab refugee camp is a humanitarian crisis; to the Kenyan government, it is a ‘nursery for terrorists’; to the western media, it is a dangerous no-go area; but to its half a million residents, it is their last resort.

Among those s e e k i n g sanctuary there are Guled, a former child soldier who lives for football; Nisho, who scrapes an existence by pushing a w h e e l b a r r o w and dreaming of riches; Tawane, the indomitable youth leader; and schoolgirl Kheyro,

whose future hangs upon her education. In City of Thorns, Rawlence interweaves the stories of nine individuals to show what life is like in the camp and to sketch the wider political forces that keep the refugees trapped there. Ben will share his stories of life in the camp, explaining why he wrote the book and what he thinks can be done to improve the lives of refugees around the world. Dan Cruickshank explores the world of the Barry and Scott architectural dynasties in the 150th anniversary year of Charles Barry Jnr’s ‘New College’at Dulwich.

Monday 14 March, 6.45 – 9.00pm, Dulwich College

6.45 – 7.15pm: Drinks reception in Lower Hall

7.30 – 8.30pm: Lecture in the Great Hall

Drinks will be served in the Lower Hall before and after the lecture and visitors can also view an exhibition in the Wodehouse Library on The Barrys and Dulwich, which includes a selection of podcasts delivered by various members of the College staff on the architecture of the College.

Tickets £10, available from [email protected]

The New Dulwich College was built on its 70 acre site on Dulwich Common in the 1860s. The main building was designed by Charles Barry Jnr, the eldest son of the architect of the Houses of Parliament, Sir Charles Barry, in a style which he called ‘Northern Italian of the Thirteenth Century’.

Sir George Gilbert Scott was a prolific Victorian Gothic architect, and founder of a fantastically successful architectural dynasty. He has been called the ‘unsung hero of British architecture’ and his style touched every aspect of British life, although it was not always admired.

Dan Cruickshank will explore the two great Victorian dynastic architectural families in this lecture. The emphasis will be on Charles Barry Jnr who designed the room in which the lecture will be delivered.

Writer, art historian, architectural consultant and broadcaster, Dan Cruickshank has made numerous history and culture programmes for the BBC.

Red HouseWednesday 23 March 11am-12.30pm

Red House is an Arts and Crafts house co-designed in 1859 by the architect Philip Webb and the designer William Morris. It was built as a family home for the latter, and is recognised as one of the most important examples of 19th century British architecture still extant. It was constructed using Morris’ ethos on craftsmanship and artisan skills, and a number of Morris’ friends visited, most notably the Pre-Raphaelite painters Edward Burne- Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, both of whom helped decorate the house.

Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to MatisseThursday 3 March

Using the work of Monet as a starting point, this exhibition examines the role gardens played in the evolution of art from the early 1860s through to the 1920s. Graham Greenfield will explain how the garden gave artists the freedom to break new ground and explore the ever-changing world around them.

The exhibition is co-organised by the Royal Academy of Arts and the Cleveland Museum of Art, and runs from Jan 30 to April 20 2016.

Financial Matters

Ever since the Chancellor George Osbourne announced the introduction of a National Living Wage (NLW) last July, there has been constant debates across the country. Sometimes, these debates have almost

reached boiling points. The Chancellor said, “Britain deserves a pay rise and Britain is getting a pay rise. …We need to move Britain from a low wages, high tax, high welfare economy to a high wages, low tax, low welfare economy.”

Commentators may well think this was a script from the economic manual of our former Prime Minister, Tony Blair. For the announcement and the sentiments are difficult to fault but as usual these grand pronouncements are made without careful thought or reflection on their introduction or implications.

In short, the Chancellor announced the introduction from 1st April 2016, of a National Living Wage (NLW) for adults aged 25 years and over. In principle, we all deserve a pay rise. However, is there no longer a north-south differential? Or is it time to head north to get more bang for our buck?

The debate, arguments or battles have not centred on my desire to migrate north of Watford, but upon the age old problem between cost to employers and economic efficiency versus the gains by the low paid to reach or enjoy an acceptable basic standard of living. From 1st April every employee aged 25 years old (unless on the first year of an apprenticeship scheme) will be entitled to £7.20ph. In other words every employee aged 25 years and over currently on the National Minimum Wage of £6.70 will enjoy a 7.5% pay rise.

Did the Chancellor plan to contribute to wage inflation in the first quarter of 2016-17? The government’s planned generosity goes even further. The government has instructed the Low Pay Commission that the minimum wage premium for over 25 year olds should reach 60% of median earnings by 2020. This would mean a rise to around £9 per hour by 2020.

Despite this 7.5% pay award, the Living Wage Foundation (LWF) champions a living wage based on

David Frederick FCCAPrincipal Marcus Bishop Associates Chartered Certified Accountants

Britain gets a pay rise

the cost of living. The LWF argue the UK Living Wage should be £8.25ph and £9.40ph in the capital.

Whilst everyone welcomes and enjoys annual pay awards, especially 7.5% which dwarfs any measure of our current rates of inflation, some reflection is required to ponder on the holistic debate. The jubilation and celebration of such pay rises may be short lived.

Small firms who are the engine of our economy expect to slow hiring and increase prices because of the new National Living Wage for over-25s, according to the Federation of Small Businesses. A Federation of Small Business (FSB) survey found 38% of small employers expect the new NLW of £7.20 an hour to negatively impact their business from 1st April 2016. In addition, 52% of these firms said they would put off recruiting new staff; and 50% expected to increase their prices as a result of the NLW being introduced. Only 6% of firms expressed a positive expectation on their business as a result of the introduction of the NLW.

Despite all the economic benefits and good intentions in the Chancellor’s proposal to transform UK plc from a low wage to a higher wage economy, he has still yet to balance the conundrum set out by Carl Jung all those years ago; ‘the shoe that fits one person pinches another; there is no recipe for living that suits all cases.’

As employees and employers look forward to 1st April, only time will tell if the UK plc NLW will produce a win-win outcome or winners and losers.

The Last Word – Lawrence Roullier White

In December Lawrence Roullier White celebrated a 10 years of his lifestyle store on Lordship Lane. Which may seem a longtime to some, but not when you know his traceable family have lived in Peckham and East Dulwich since the 1780’s.

How long have you lived in the area?I have lived here all my life. I was born in Camberwell where my parents rented, they bought their first home in East Dulwich.

What has changed most during that time? The area just keeps getting better and better, I think the shops and bars and restaurants are now amongst the best in London.

What do you most value about the area/street you live in?I am so lucky to have a house on the Peckham side of Peckham Rye looking over the Common. I am so privileged to have that as my view.

The most famous person you’ve met?We get many, many really lovely and charming ones in the shop and I have met a lot. Probably the most star struck I have been, however, was when Leslie Caron bought her Christmas presents on the first

www.roullierwhite.com

Christmas Eve we were open. A big deal serving Oscar nominated actress in your first week!

Where are you to be found on Saturday? The stalls on North Cross Road are a favourite of mine and I love exploring Peckham where there is always something exciting and ingenious happening.

What is your favourite place to eat?We are so spoiled for choice but I love Sunday lunches in the House of Tippler – Tim does the best Martinis – and Pedler is a passion of mine. I love trying new ones though and cannot wait to check out The Habit in Nunhead.

The best kept secret...The mausoleum in Dulwich Picture Gallery is a nook that no one seems to know about. Sometimes the main gallery can be heaving and hidden away, just feet from the visitors, is this little sanctuary of calm.

Where’s your favourite place to walk?I walk everywhere, I love walking over One Tree Hill to Honor Oak and up to Horniman’s for the amazing view from the bandstand.

When I want to relax...In the warmer months I walk to Brockwell Park for an early morning swim at the Lido. I do yoga at Yogarise in the Bussey Building.

What is your favourite shop?I love them all, we are so lucky with all our independent shops, I do love a bookshop though and I pass Rye Books every morning on my way to work, I say hello to Alastair and Bert the dog.

And the last thing you bought there?A signed company of the Lady in the Van – I gave to my friend who is an Alan Bennett fanatic.

Best bargain you’ve ever landed..Not bought locally, but Lola, our British Blue, has been 12 years of fun, well worth the price tag.

My perfect holiday..I would love to have a week with no work to do and spend it properly discovering this area – I always seem to be rushing somewhere or other so a week off at home with absolutely nothing to do would be lovely.
