Every Journey Begins with the First Step!Since the inception of our current Student Experience Department, we have placed much emphasis on developing our students as leaders, not just for the here and now at Taylor’s, but for their future and the betterment of society. In fact, this development process not only involves the students but very much our staff as well. Leadership is a continuing journey that begins with a step in the correct direction. To quote Jack Welch, the former chairman and CEO of General Electric, “before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” Every one of us is in this journey!

In terms of student development, we have run various initiatives to engage our students in service learning projects and I am proud to say that these projects have been solely handled by the students themselves, with minimal supervision from our staff. In terms of their learning through reection afterwards, I have been surprised by the insights generated by these student leaders which I believe have changed their philosophy and outlook in life. We have witnessed this transformation in our students which supports our university core purpose, which is to educate the youth of the world to take their productive place as leaders in the global community.

It is this sense of achievement coupled with a sense of pride of being a Taylor’s student which drives our students to excel in many other areas as well. From the commissioning of the Student Council and International Student Council committee, to engaging in interfaith dialogues, representing Taylor’s in the IPSF Pharmaceutical World Congress, and creating recognition for Taylor’s and Malaysia in the World Dodgeball Invitational – it is nothing short of astounding in terms of what our students have accomplished. As educators and facilitators, we are very proud to be walking this journey with them and learning new things along the way for ourselves.

To kick-off this issue, I would like to encourage you (if you have not already done so) to participate in our activities throughout the year, which I rmly believe would help you discover more about yourself, and your calling in serving the needs of our society. It is through servitude that one nds him or herself, whether as an accidental leader or someone who aspires to achieve greatness. I believe that all of us are called as leaders in some sorts, to pave the way for others and inspire others to greater things, not just at Taylor’s, but for the benet of our increasingly globalised society.

Regardless of your talents, abilities and aspirations, everyone can be a leader. I challenge you to take that step towards greatness, to explore your endless possibilities. With that I’ll leave you with a quote from Abraham Lincoln to sum up how one should approach life – “Whatever you are, be a good one.”

Sincerely,Angela PokVice-President, Student ExperienceTaylor’s University

Highlights - Leadership Development

Leadership in the GLOBAL CommunityTaylor’s University has completed numerous exchange activities with the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd). In this occasion, Ms. Angela Pok (Vice President of Student Experience) had selected eleven scholars to venture to Hong Kong for a service-learning trip with HKIEd.

Held in between July and August, the scholars’ experience was one which would change most people’s perception of life as they know it. The students were placed in a position where they not only served the community of a blind and an old folk’s home, but they also encountered the dense and restrictive living conditions of these residents in Hong Kong.

During the visits to the homes, the scholars organised ice-breaking activities for and chatted with the residents. To the scholars’ surprise, the residents were delighted with their hospitality and were genuinely happy to meet them.

Through the service-learning trip, the scholars expressed that the most rewarding outcomes were the exposure to a completely different culture and environment, a newfound appreciation for life which is often taken for granted, newfound foreign friends and the cultivation of leadership skills through this initiative.

Tradisi Cultural Arts PerformancesTRADISI was started in July as a strategic platform for promoting Malaysian traditional and cultural dances. Led by three advisors, namely Mr. Khairee (Student Development Hub), Ms. Sophie (School of Education) and Ms. Fadzilah (School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts), they recruited 25 students, prepared and trained them to exhibit Malaysia’s cultural richness through the performing arts particularly in the areas of music and dance.

Through its showcases, TRADISI promotes and instils a sense of Malaysian integration, unity and respect among students regardless of origin, background and ethnicity. Through their efforts, they hope that more people continue to take an interest in Malaysian cultural performances as a way to preserve it for future generations.

Among the events which showcased TRADISI’s variety of performances include the International Students Welcome Party and Merdeka Day Celebrations in August, and the Eid Celebration in September. The variety of dances performed include the Zapin dance (Welcome Party) in which they led 80 international students to join them; Masri Kerincing, Jigling Nona, Indian and Joget dances (Merdeka Day Celebrations) before an audience of over 200 staff and students; and the Zapin Teluk Belanga and Inang Sesuci Lebaran dance performances (Eid Celebration).

Interfaith Dialogue Forum

An initiative by the Muslim Students’ Association, an interfaith dialogue forum was held in September in collaboration with the Christian Fellowship and Buddhist Club. With the purpose of closing the gap of understanding and correcting misconceptions among the three distinct beliefs, the forum attracted 150 participants who engaged with experienced speakers representing each faith. The panellists included Mr. Lim Jooi Soon (Islam), Mr. Eugene Yapp (Christianity) and Mr. Vijaya Samarawickrama (Buddhism); while Mr. Abu Shariz moderated the session.

The organising committee Mid-Autumn CelebrationThe Chinese Society organised a Mid-Autumn Celebration in conjunction with the festival in the third week of September. Sixty participants gathered together for food, drink, games and performances under the theme ‘Sharing’.

With the theme in mind, a potluck was held whereby individuals prepared home-cooked Malaysian-Chinese dishes and shared it among themselves, especially so in welcoming their new members as a way of bonding with existing members. As part of the Chinese Mid-Autumn tradition, participants also brought and lit their lanterns, and shared moon cakes among themselves as part of the festivities.

HKIEd’s ‘5-Takes’Service-Learning Tour with Taylor’sThe Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) recently visited Taylor’s University on a service-learning trip in August. This marks the third year that HKIEd has organised their community service tour in collaboration with Taylor’s University’s Community Service Initiative (CSI) and the rst time the entire trip was fully planned by the students themselves. The objective of these visits is to enable them to learn from and have a broader perspective of how community service is conducted in other countries.

The team of sixteen students and an advisor from HKIEd were hosted by ten CSI volunteers throughout their ve days in Malaysia. They arranged visits to learn about and assist in numerous homes and community service centres such as Pusat Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Cornerstone, Pusat Jagaan Insan Istimewa, Pertiwi Soup Kitchen and The Spastic Children Association for Selangor and Federal Territory. The HKIEd group managed to t in some time in their packed schedule to visit a few local attractions such as KLCC, Central Market, the Bird and Orchid Parks as well as take a city tour of Putrajaya. On the last day of their visit, the CSI held a sharing session with HKIEd in which both sides presented their projects and initiatives. This visit was a great opportunity for both HKIEd and Taylor’s CSI to exchange ideas and experiences and to work together.

Taylor’s Lakeside Storm Dodgeball Club’s Women’s Team represented Malaysia in the World Dodgeball Invitational 2013 which was held in Queenstown, New Zealand in September. Organised by the World Dodgeball Federation, the event is the world premier championship tournament for the top qualifying teams representing their nations. With over 200 participating athletes from countries such as Hong Kong, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, we anticipated a challenge from the world’s best.

Taylor’s National Women’s Team emerged fourth overall and raked up awesome scores throughout. Our women’s team also managed to defeat the eventual Women's World Champions Canada by pounding them 8–2 in the group stage.

Taylor’s also led 2012 World Champions Hong Kong 5–3 with 6 minutes remaining but could not nish them off and eventually lost 6–5 in sudden death. Should Taylor’s have won, our women’s team would have qualied for the nals against Canada.

Chong Hwei Xian (Team Captain) was voted Women’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) for Malaysia and for leading the team to a great nish. Despite their size disadvantage when matched up against other competition, our women’s team came up huge on court and were praised by all participants for their honesty, which is the main criteria in Dodgeball.

A Summer Experience

in KoreaIn a summer which they’ll never forget, eighteen students from various Taylor’s University programmes participated in a Inha Summer School programme at Inha University. Held in the month of August, the programme provides students a golden opportunity to experience Korea and its cultural richness. From learning the Korean language, experiencing and understanding its culture, to exploring various cities within reach with other Summer School participants from different countries – it was surely a fullling summer experience apart from attending lectures at Inha University and completing given assignments. Among the places which they visited were Everland Resort Theme Park, Gyungbokgung Palace and the Nanta (Cookin’) Comedy Show.

In further representing Taylor’s internationally, ten of the students were courageous in joining a Cultural Competition held by Inha University, and competed with students from other international universities. Calling themselves T-Swag (as in Taylor’s Swag), the students committed themselves in fully representing Taylor’s brand and came out rst place in the competition.

Vida Ardianty Sionader, an Indonesian participant from Taylor’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts shares that the programme allowed her “a gateway to explore and experience Korea as a temporary student for a short period of time”. Apart from the enjoyable panoramic views of Korea, she also “gained knowledge from the classes that were presented in a very different manner” which one would not experience in a typical classroom back home.

Business Entrepreneur Summer Courses

Study Tour @Taylor’s Business School

Taylor’s had the privilege to welcome 25 German students and their two accompanying professors from Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg (DHBW) in August. As one of our global mobility partners, it was DHBW’s rst time visiting our institution for a short educational tour. The tour comprised of a series of lectures delivered by professors from Taylor’s Business School and external speakers.

As DHBW is one of our partner universities, it is their rst time visiting our institution for a short study tour. Their two-week long study tour consisted of a series of lectures delivered by the professors from the School of Business along with external speakers; a city tour, a service learning outing, and a visit to the German Chamber of Commerce.

Taylor’s Law School welcomed nine students from Fu Jen Catholic University, Taiwan for a short Summer Course in August. As part of their two-week study itinerary were a series of lectures and seminars by our Law School faculty members, eld trips to places such as the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya, and not excluding fun outings with Taylor’s Student Ambassadors.

Through this programme the students have discovered different facets of applicable laws found in both countries. As a result, they have even indicated their intention to learn and understand better Taiwan’s legal system when they return home. Last but not least, the Taiwanese students have also expressed their appreciation to the student ambassadors who have brought them around the city during their stay here, which have led to new friendships being fostered among them.

A milestone was achieved when Emileen Chieng Siaw Ling from the School of Pharmacy represented Taylor’s at the International Pharmaceutical Students Federation (IPSF) World Congress in Netherlands. Emileen attended the congress between July and August, and was an ofcial delegate of the Malaysian Pharmacy Students’ Association. Given the honour, she was involved in the highest decision-making body of IPSF and took part in discussion of policies and working statements.

It was not all work and no play, as Emileen was also involved in fun workshops, pharmacy visits, public health campaigns, themed nights and experienced Dutch Day too. Her participation was indeed fruitful as she has gained much knowledge, exposure and made new friends from across the globe!

Exchange Students on Melawati Hill and Fire Fly Sightseeing TripGlobal Mobility exchange students were in for a treat with a day outing to Melawati Hill, Kuala Selangor in the rst week of September. There were fteen participants consisting of students from IESEG School of Management, Agro Paris of France; Cologne Business School, Baden-Württemberg University, Augsburg University and Hanze University of Germany; and Kyung Hee University of South Korea.

The students rst took a road-tram up the hill to explore various historical sites and had the opportunity to take in the scenic views and feed the monkeys in the area. In transition from Melawati Hill to re y watching, the students who were accompanied by Mr. Tee Ching Hin of International Student Services made a dinner stop to enjoy fresh seafood by the river. There they witnessed a stunning sunset by the river before setting off on boats to for re y sightings.

Overall the students appreciated the trip which gave them the opportunity to know one another better while sight-seeing. The sightings of re ies which they caught resembled Christmas trees lit in a night river cruise and reminded them of the beauty of God’s creation.

Visiting Week for International Educators at Kyung Hee University

The Global Collaborative Summer Programme was originally based on the institutional agreement between Kyung Hee University and University of Pennsylvania, which was later joined by other prestigious universities such as Peking University of China, Ritsumeikan University of Japan, Moscow State University of Russia as well as international organisations such as the United Nations and Conference of NGOs (CoNGO). Since its inception in 2006, the programme has since grown to garner the participation of 300 students from over 28 different institutions and 27 countries.

In conjunction with the Global Collaborative Summer Program that is held every year in the month of July, Kyung Hee University organises a Visiting Week for International

Educators. During this week, various University representatives from all over the world arrive at the picturesque Seoul campus. Flanked by lush well-kept gardens and Gothic-style buildings, delegates were warmly received by the staff of the Ofce of International Affairs.

Overall the Visiting Week provided a valuable platform to observe the delivery of the programme along with networking opportunities with other University representatives. Through this programme, greater awareness and understanding surrounding East Asian Civilisation and Global Governance can better established through such summer school collaborations.

Dodgeball Coaching CourseIn the month of July, Mr. Murali Paramasivam and Mr. Aravindha Lochanan of the Sports and Recreation Centre (SRC) participated in a Dodgeball Coaching Course held at the Sri Emas International School. The two-day training was a Level 1 course organised by the Malaysian Association of Dodgeball, and was open to all its registered club members. The coaching course was a good opportunity for them to have an in depth look at other coaching techniques and strategies, best practices, and team management. It is with these new insights that SRC hopes to add an even greater edge to Taylor’s Storm Dodgeball team’s preparations for further success.
