Your Awesome Student Experience Starts Here!In the recent months, the Student Experience (SE) family has been busy carrying out a

series of activities. These activities aim at taking care of Taylorians’ needs as they focus on being a high achiever and prepare to tackle the demanding role of future leaders.

It also included numerous fun yet beneficial activities and programmes aimed to help graduates in the real world. These covered areas such as enhancing employability, improving on character, enhancing leadership skills, widening their global outlook, expanding on existing soft skills, encouraging good sportsmanship, etc.

At the top of the list of our successful activities was the Career and Employment Fair which served as a vital launch pad for students’ who are keen to make a good impression in the competitive working world. The event went beyond visiting potential employers at booths, as we had collaborated with industry professionals in conducting several employability workshops.

If you missed it, watch out for the next major career fair. Also keep an eye for our regular career related activities, such as the weekly Professional Engineering Lecture Series (featured on page 6), sessions on interns and management associates (for example, BMW’s session on page 7), and field trips co-organised with the different schools (see All About Semiconductors on page 7).

This issue features several community-related and sports activities that were carried out. These ensure that as Taylorians make an impact on the world, they do so in a positive, compassionate manner, whilst working well with other team members from diverse backgrounds. It also instills the value of having a balanced lifestyle. We appreciate the time and effort put in by Taylorians to make these events a resounding success.

SE is very pleased by the special effort students have made to recognise and praise staff who had gone out of their way to help them (turn to Notes of Praise on page 13). Please note that in our attempts to continuously improve our service, we are currently conducting an Awesome Customer Experience Campaign and recently concluded a survey on our services (featured on page 14).

SE hopes you will join us in the many fun activities and programmes we have planned for you in the coming months. This is our special way of ensuring that you always have an awesome experience at Taylor’s.

Sincerely,Angela PokDirector, Student ExperienceTaylor’s University

Student Feedback

Career Services:I would like to compliment Ms. Raja Edriana Baizura who is a Senior Career Counselor

at Taylor’s University Career Services Centre. She is a very approachable woman who is constantly willing to help with a smile. My experience with working with her was during the

recent Career Fair held at Taylor’s University. She was ever willing to help me in writing and reviewing my Cover Letters and Resumes before I handed them over to the companies. One particular moment which

I really appreciate was that she was even willing to work and reply mails during public holidays (the day before Career Fair was a public holiday) in her endeavour to help.

On the day of the Fair, she willingly aided in breaking the ice between me and the representatives. I thought that was a brilliant gesture as it made the approaching-the-company process way more comfortable. She opened up different opportunities for me such as suggesting I try up the mentoring session with Ms. Leanne Koh, Executive Director from KPMG. The session was a wonderful experience which I might have missed on if not for Ms. Edriana who constantly kept me aware of what I had to gain from an experience like that. She even guided me by reviewing the questions I came up with for the session.

All in all, I think she was a great help and its good feeling knowing that help is so readily available for students at Taylor’s University.

Security:I’ve lost my iPad today and when i found out, i immediately report to the security. They are efficient and fast and that’s why I get to know where i lose it. Overall they are very efficientand well trained. Really appreciate them =D

Accommodation:The maintenance service of Taylor’s accommodation is improving a lot now. I just complaint 2 days ago and today they came and fixed it. Thank you so much for the high concern and care. Appreciate it a lot.

Student Experience is proud to congratulate national swimmer Khoo Cai Lin for her fantastic achievement in winning two medals, one gold and one silver, at the 26th SEA Games which was held in Indonesia in November 2011. Cai Lin bagged the gold in the 800M freestyle event while the silver came from the 4x100M medley relay event. Cai Lin has done Malaysia and Taylor’s University proud

through these wonderful achievements in the pool. We wish Cai Lin, who recently graduated from the Diploma in

Communication programme in June 2012, the very best in all her future endeavours, both in and out

of the pool!

School of Biosciences:Lecture use Dropbox and Google Plus as an e-learning is an excellent

experience because Dropbox will not have problem to be acess unlike Black board 7 that will breakdown anytime that cause delay and problems. Google

plus is also very much easier to communicate with lecturer because just type the question and post it up on wall.i can see the comment straight away when i use personel computer that seldom logout. Student Email that provided by Taylor’s is just trouble to be used.I need to login with long email, that i always forget and others. I hate to use Blackboard 7 and student email. I strongly agree to use Google plus and Dropbox as E learning. I can manage the file easier,

faster, efficient and don’t need to login so many time that i feel trouble doing so. Well done to the person that suggesting

Google plus and Dropbox as teaching tool.

Uni Gym:The cleaners are very efficient

in keeping the gym clean. Always seen cleaning off our sweat from the floor/machines :)

Student Barometer -Summer Wave 2012

ACE Campaign was introduced in 2010 to provide Awesome Customer Experience (ACE) to Taylor’s University customers. Students can rate their service satisfaction by filling in a survey form placed at each service counter. Carried out on a 6-month challenge yearly, 20 departments participated this time round with the tagline “Delivering Excellent Service is Our ACE Priority” carrying the “A.C.E” theme. The campaign started from 1st April 2012 and will end on 30th September 2012.

• The 1st theme: ‘A’ stands for “Attentive to Customer Needs”. We must place our customers as our utmost priority!• The 2nd theme: ‘C’ stands for “Core values as our Compass”. We should always use our core values as a guide to excellent service.• The 3rd theme is: ‘E’ stands for “Provide Extra-mile from the heart”. Do more than is required, sincerely from our heart.

All staff involved in this challenge will be givena special lapel pin carrying “A.C.E.”!

ACE Campus Wide

The Survey serves as a platform for the University to know what students think of the services and facilities provided for them, and upon hearing their voices, we aim to improve on all areas of our services to them. Taylor’s University works with i-graduate, the world leader in customer insight for the education sector, to run this survey. The first Barometer Survey was launched in November 2011.

The communication pack for 2011 was posted on the Taylor’s University Student Portal in May 2012, with improvement plans carried out in 2012 and will be carrying out in months to come. The Student Barometer Summer Wave was carried out in May 2012 until June 2012.

Our Hockey BoysMade it to the Finals!

Taylor’s University Shinesat Table Tennis Tournament

This event took place from 10th – 13th of May at Tioman Island and a total of 11 students and 2 staff took part which was organized by the Scuba Diving Club of Taylor’s University.

The course comprised of confined water lessons whereby all participants would have to learn about the scuba equipment as well as the dangers of diving (this took place at the Commercial Dive Centre in Cheras on the first day). The following 3 days was held at Tioman Island and all participants had to learn how to dive in open water during the day as well as one dive during the night for advanced divers. After 3 grueling days of diving, the final examination was given by the instructor and all of our participants qualified under the NAUI badge.

The Jakarta International Sports Club of Indonesia (ICSI) Hockey Tournament was held from the 26th – 27th of May 2012 in Jakarta. A total of 16 teams took part in this event from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong and others.

Taylor’s University was leading after the first round, winning 2 matches and drew the last match. This enabled us to play against the runner up of the other group of which we won comfortably. In the semi’s we played against the defending champions from Indonesia and won 3-0. In the finals, we played against Polytechnic Malaysia and lost 2-1. It was a closely contested match and the boys played very well but just not enough to beat our opponents.

The KPT-IPT Table Tennis Tournament, organised by the Ministry of Higher Education and involved the participation of many public and private higher education institutions, recently took place in Kuantan from the 13th-15th of April. Taylor’s University was represented by 7 players who took part in the team and individual events.

In the team event, Taylor’s University was placed in the top 16 teams of the tournament, while one of our students qualified for the semifinals in the men’s singles category which was a wonderful achievement as there were many state players representing the various universities.

This event was held on the 9th and 10th of July at Taylor’s University. A total of 24 female and 36 male teams took part in this event and Taylor’s University sent both a male and female team.

Both the male and female teams were undefeated in the early rounds of the competition. Both teams qualified for the quarter finals where they defeated their opponents with ease. During the semifinals, the male team had an easy victory while the female team struggled to beat their opponents but eventually succeeded. The finals was another one sided affair for both teams as they won comfortably against their opponents. This is the first time that a University is champions in both categories.

For May, En Izwal Mazlan, Manager of Career Services together with his team brought the cinema to campus when they organised Laa Laa Night at LT1, where colleagues experienced a true movie night on campus, with lots of fun and laughter! Ms Susan Yap and her Career Services team organized a more relaxed session, with food and more food! Thanks to Ms Sandy Tan, Head of Career Services & Global Mobility who offered her home as the venue for the get-together.

The feedback management system at Taylor’s University has received recognition and endorsement by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia for its effectiveness in addressing students’ feedback on their campus experience. The Ministry recently invited Ms Angela Pok, Director of Student Experience to share our feedback management system as one of the best practices with other universities and colleges in the northern part of Malaysia, in an effort to elevate the overall standard of governance in these institutions, thus transforming the tertiary education landscape in Malaysia. This recognition has further enhanced the credibility of Taylor’s University’s reputation in the education industry in Malaysia.
