BRITISH SCIENCE WEEK AND STEM WEEK

At Ewell Castle Senior School we are celebrating British Science Week 10th - 19th March

2017 by holding our very own second STEM Week. STEM Week celebrates Science,

Technology, Engineering and Maths and we are looking forward to a number of events and

activities at the School involving these subjects. Who knows, they may even inspire some

of our pupils to consider a future in these growth areas which are receiving a lot of interest

from both government and business.

STEM AND CAREER CHOICES

STEM is a wide area and includes; subjects allied to medicine, biological sciences,

agricultural and related subjects, physical sciences, mathematical sciences, computer

science, engineering and technology and architectural building and planning. In 2015, 26%

of Ewell Castle School Sixth Form students who went to university, chose STEM related

courses.

STEM jobs include: computer support specialists, computer programmers, civil engineers,

mechanical engineers, natural science managers, physicists, agricultural and food science

technicians, software publishers, biochemists, chemists and pharmaceutical and medicine

manufacturers. STEM related jobs include; auditors, financial consultants, underwriters,

science administrators, policy advisors, science teachers and business managers in

healthcare and conservation.

TITLE OF PROJECT YEAR GROUP DESCRIPTION

INVESTIGATION TO FIND THE FORMULA FOR THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF A CIRCLE

Year 7 Pupils will be measuring around circular objects, inside and outside the classroom to try to find the relationship between the circumference and the diameter.

PAPER AIRPLANE CHALLENGE Year 7 The pupils will make a paper airplane that can carry cargo and glide for more than ten feet.

INVESTIGATION TO FIND THE FORMULA FOR THE AREA OF A CIRCLE

Year 8 Pupils will be investigating the relationship between the radius and the area of a circle.

PAPER AIRPLANE CHALLENGE Year 8 The pupils will make a paper airplane that can carry cargo and glide for more than ten feet.

AREA OF A SECTOR AND THE LENGTH OF AN ARC

Year 9 Pupils will explore how to find the area of a sector and the length of an arc.

FLIP MATS CHALLENGE Year 9 The pupils will investigate the optimum shape to flip a mat and catch it.
