Hello! We hope you had an enjoyable and safe Easter! Please remember this weekly update will give ideas and guide you with what you could do at home but remember they are only ideas and do not have to be completed. Also remember Twinkl are offering free membership at the moment to all.
Spellings (There is a handwriting sheet too)
English Read! Read! Read! 20 minutes each day either to yourself or an adult then discuss the text and any parts you didn’t understand. Make a word bank of new words. This week we will be looking at stories by the same author on the theme of the rainforest. 1. Firstly immerse yourself in rainforest ambience! There is a virtual rainforest tour on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEsV5rqbVNQ. What do you know about the rainforest? Where are they? What animals live there? The Amazon is the world’s largest rainforest.
a) Use the map at the beginning of ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ to see where the forest is. The author wrote about the Amazon rainforest because many of the animals and plants found there are endangered.
b) Listen to the story ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ by Lynne Cherry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1Teb-_jTyI
c) Look at the passage found next to the title page of ‘The Great Kapok Tree’. Read it carefully. Also look at the page showing the layers (see below)
d) Produce an illustration including as much detail as you can about the animals and plants mentioned in the text. Add labels to your pictures, showing which parts of the forest are which, e.g. canopy, understorey. Have you included all the animals and plants mentioned? (BRING THESE INTO SCHOOL FOR A DISPLAY!) 2. Listen to ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ again to recap. Find out what a kapok tree is. Look at http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/kids/species-profiles/kapok-tree for information. Write a list of its many uses for animals and humans.
3. Using highlighters, identify adjectives and adverbs in the piece of writing. (See below) 4. Complete ‘Sentences to improve’ (See below) Maths – Equivalent Fractions Please look at the website for the daily lessons. There is teaching material and guidance.
(Year 4 Week 3 Lessons 1-5)
Science – Help our Habitats Look at https://www.twinkl.co.uk/teaching-wiki/habitat– What is a habitat? What does it provide for animals? Research how animals are adapted to their habitat. The PowerPoint ‘Animal adaptation’ should help. You could draw an animal in its habitat and label how it is adapted to its environment. Watch ‘Adaptation in Animals’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anRp7FQ9CKY PE Real PE at home includes an online programme which supports families to be active, play and learn together. It includes a programme for children in Key Stage 2, with daily and weekly guidance provided for both programmes in addition to an option to choose your own themes and activities. We hope that the ideas help support you and your family to stay fit and healthy in the coming months. Here are the details to access Real PE at home: The website address is: home.jasmineactive.com Parent email: [email protected] Password: leighnorth Fraction Joe Wicks will do a 30 minute live workout at 9am; it is aimed at children but there is nothing to stop you joining in as well. These can be accessed at any point during the day. https://www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1 Geography – Sustainability Look at the PowerPoint What is Sustainability to find out what Sustainability means. Keep safe! From the Year 4 Team
Extract from story: The Great Kapok
Tree
Identify adjectives and adverbs:
The man awoke with a start. Before him
stood the rain forest child and, around
him, staring intently, were the creatures
who depended upon the great Kapok tree.
What wondrous and rare animals they
were!
The man looked about and saw the sun
streaming through the canopy. Spots of
bright light glowed like jewels amidst the
dark green forest. Strange and beautiful
plants seemed to dangle in the air,
suspended from the great Kapok tree.
The man smelled the fragrant perfume of
their flowers. He felt the steamy mist
rising from the forest floor. But he heard
no sound, for the creatures were strangely
silent.
Sentences to improve
Add adjectives and adverbs to the sentences below to make
them come alive with imaginative detail….
Write your new sentences carefully to create a vivid
description.
Many birds live in the emergent layer of the rainforest.
The trees are surrounded by flowers and other plants.
Animals prowl through the understory.
A variety of creatures inhabit the canopy.
Butterflies are found everywhere.
Now write some dialogue where two creatures from the
rainforest describe their homes.
Examples
“My home is in the canopy, where I can walk along the thick
branches, going from one tree to another, and resting upside
down as I go.” The sloth whispered.
“I live in the understory below the massive trees, slipping in
and out of the thick undergrowth…,” replied the tapir.
Remember to use inverted commas and correct punctuation.
