INTRODUCTIONEINLEITUNGThe Science Film Festival is a celebration of science com-munication and enjoys a unique position in Southeast Asia, North Africa and the Middle East: In cooperation with local partners it promotes science literacy and facilitates aware-ness of contemporary scientific, technological and environ-mental issues through film and television content coupled together with accompanying educational activities. The festival seeks to explain scientific issues accessibly and entertainingly to a broad audience and demonstrates that science can be communicated in an educational, as well as entertaining manner. The event has grown considerably since its first edition in 2005, meanwhile becoming the most extensive event of its kind and one of the biggest film festivals worldwide in terms of audience reach.

By facilitating cooperation between local and international agencies from the scientific, cultural, educational and environmental sector, with the generous support of the international film and television community, an effective infrastructure can be put into place for the dissemination of scientific understanding and access to knowledge. Furthermore, the festival offers a platform for intercultural exchange through which different approaches to the world of science converge. During the festival period, the films are screened non-commercially in museums, schools, universities and other educational venues through coordinated efforts of partners with existing networks and the capabilities to orga-nize such screenings. All films are synchronized into local language to offer viewers unhindered access to the content without language barriers.

The festival contributes to the development of a science communication infrastructure and supports science education in the countries in which it takes place, both of which are integral to the capacity development of a generation that has to exist in a global knowledge society.

Das Science Film Festival hat sich der Wissenschaftskommuni- kation verschrieben und ist eine bedeutende Veranstaltung in Südostasien, Nordafrika und dem Nahen Osten: In Koope-ration mit den Partnern vor Ort fördert es wissenschaftliche Bildung und lenkt die Aufmerksamkeit auf aktuelle wissenschaftliche, technologische und umweltbedingte Themen durch das Medium Film und Fernsehen. Das Festival prä-sentiert Filme, die wissenschaftliche Zusammenhänge auf zugängliche und unterhaltsame Weise einem breiten Pub-likum erklären. Die Filmauswahl demonstriert, dass wis-senschaftliche Inhalte vor einem Bildungshintergrund auch in unterhaltsamen Art und Weise durch audio-visuelle Medien vermittelt werden können. Seit der ersten Auflage 2005 konnte das Festival ein bedeutendes Wachstum aufwei-sen und ist mittlerweile das größte Festival dieser Art weltweit.

Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit lokalen und internationa-len Akteuren aus Wissenschaft, Kultur, Bildung und Umwelt und mit großzügiger Unterstützung internationaler Film- und Fernsehgesellschaften kann eine effektive Infrastruktur ent-stehen, die das Verständnis für die Wissenschaft fördert und den allgemeinen Zugang zu Wissen erleichtert. Darüber hinaus ist das Festival durch verschiedene Medienzugänge zur Welt des Wissens eine Plattform für interkulturelle Begegnungen. Während des Festivals werden die Filme nicht-kommerziell in Museen, Schulen, Universitäten oder anderen Bildungsstätten gezeigt. Dies wird durch die Bemühungen unserer Partner, vor-handener Netzwerke und gegebene Räumlichkeiten ermöglicht. Alle Filme werden in die jeweilige Landessprache synchronisiert, um ein besseres Verstehen der Inhalte ohne Sprachbarrieren zu erreichen. Das Festival trägt in den Ländern mit Festivalbeteiligung zu infra-struktureller Entwicklung von Wissenschaftskommunikation bei und fördert die wissenschaftliche Ausbildung in seinen Gastlän-dern. Beides ist wesentlich für die Entwicklung einer Generation in der globalen Wissensgesellschaft von heute.

GENERAL OVERVIEWALLGEMEINER ÜBERBLICKIn 2014, the Science Film Festival was organized in Cambodia, Egypt, Indonesia, the Gulf Region, Lao P.D.R., Jordan, Malay-sia, Myanmar, Palestine, the Philippines, Sudan, Thailand and Vietnam. The festival focused on FUTURE TECHNOLOGIES and took place internationally from October 13 to December 14, 2014, with local dates varying by country within this period.

2014 wurde das Science Film Festival in Kambodscha, Ägypten, Indonesien, der Golfregion, Laos, Jordanien, Malaysia, Myanmar, Palästina, den Philippinen, Sudan, Thailand und Vietnam organisiert. Das Festival legte den Schwerpunkt auf ZUKUNFTS- TECHNOLOGIEN und lief in den beteiligten Ländern zwischen dem 13. Oktober und dem 14. Dezember mit unterschiedlicher Programmdauer.

The event reached over 580 000 visitors in 13 countries in Southeast Asia, North Africa and the Middle East. The out-come further strengthens its position as the largest scien-tific film festival worldwide in terms of audience reach and contributes to its recognition as one of the most effective science education popularization initiatives in both regions.

COUNTRY OVERVIEWSLÄNDERÜBERBLICKThe Science Film Festival is organized in each country by the Goethe-Institut in close cooperation with local partners. The festival relies on the collaboration and active participation of science education institutions and facilities, schools, uni-versities, ministries and cultural centres in each of the host countries, as well as the enthusiasm of their staff and other implementation partners, such as NGOs, educators or student volunteer groups, who arrange the screenings and activities.

The following offers an overview of the Science Film Festival structures in each festival country in 2014:

Das Science Film Festival wird in jedem Land vom Goethe- Institut in enger Zusammenarbeit mit lokalen Partnern organisiert. Das Festival wird ermöglicht durch die Kooperation und aktive Teilnahme von wissenschaftlichen Bildungseinrichtungen, Schulen, Universitäten, Ministerien, und Kulturzentren in jedem Gastland, aber auch durch den Enthusiasmus der Mitarbeiter und Partner, durch die begeisterte Unterstützung von Mitarbeitern und Partnern wie NGOs, ehrenamtliche Lehrer und studentische Gruppen, die bei den Veranstaltungen und Aktivitäten mitwirken.

CAMBODIA 6TH EDITIONKAMBODSCHA 6. AUSGABE

The Science Film Festival in Cambodia was organized by the Goethe-Institut Thailand and Mercedes-Benz in cooperation with Khmer Youth and Social Development (KYSD), UNESCO office in Cambodia, Ministry of Education, MetaHouse German Cultural Centre, Mlup Baitong organization, Royal University of Agriculture, American Intercon Institute/School, Pour Un Sourire D’enfant organization and The WestLine School. Screenings took place from October 15 to November 15 in Phnom Penh City and also in Kompot Province, Kompong Thom Pro-vince and Stung Treng Province. In Phnom Penh City screenings were held in the hall of the Royal University of Agriculture, American Intercon Institute/School, Pour Un Sourire D’enfant organization, and the WestLine School. In the three provinces the films were screened at schools, education facilities, and pagodas. The screenings reached 19 566 visitors in 2014 and activities were carried out countrywide through the efforts of the volunteers, KYSD’s staff and teachers at partner schools.

In den drei Provinzen wurden die Filme an Schulen, Bildungseinrichtungen und Pagoden gezeigt. Die Vorführungen 2014 erreichten 19.566 Besucher. Akti-vitäten wurden mit Hilfe von Volontären, Mitarbeitern des KYSD und Lehrern von Partnerschulen landesweit organisiert.

EGYPT 1ST EDITIONÄGYPTEN 1. AUSGABE

The Science Film Festival Egypt was organized by the Goethe- Institut Alexandria in cooperation with the Planetarium Science Center of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and with the support of Mer-cedes-Benz as the main sponsor. In its first year, the festival rea-ched 1 880 visitors in Egypt. Screenings and activities were pre-sented from November 4 to December 14, 2014, in Alexandria as well as in the provinces El Behaira und El Dakahlia in the Nile Delta.

In Alexandria the screenings were held in the Bibliotheca- Alexandrina and in the Goethe-Institut. In addition the “Bibliotheksbus” visited schools, clubs, an orphanage and a public library in the Nile Delta to bring the programme of the Science Film Festival directly to the children.

The Science Film Festival in Egypt is a project of the Goe-the-Institut as part of the German-Arabic transformation partnership, funded by the Federal Foreign Office.

Das Science Film Festival in Ägypten wurde vom Goethe- Institut Alexandria in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Planetarium Science Center der Bibliotheca Alexandrina und der Unter-stützung durch Mercedes-Benz als Hauptsponsor realisiert. In seinem ersten Jahr erreichte das Festival 1.880 Besucher in Ägypten. Vorführungen und Aktivitäten fanden zwischen dem 4. November und dem 14. Dezember 2014 in Alexandria, aber auch in den Provinzen El Behaira und El Dakahlia im Nildelta statt. In Alexandria wurden die Vorführungen in der Bibliotheca- Alexandria und im Goethe-Institut gezeigt. Zusätzlich besuchte

der “Bibliotheksbus” Schulen, Clubs, ein Waisenhaus und eine öffentliche Bibliothek im Nildelta, um das Programm des Science Film Festivals den Kindern direkt zu vermitteln.

Das Science Film Festival in Ägypten ist ein Projekt des Goethe-Instituts im Rahmen der deutsch-arabischen Transfor-mationspartnerschaft. Gefördert durch das Auswärtige Amt.

GULF REGION 2ND EDITIONGOLF REGION 2. AUSGABE

In cooperation with the Children’s City, the SciFest Dubai and the Fujairah Media & Culture Authority and with the support of Mercedes-Benz as the main sponsor, the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region organized the Science Film Festival in the United Arab Emirates and the Gulf Region for the second time.

Screenings took place from October 31 to November 9, 2014, in Dubai at the Children’s City and in Fujairah at the Fujairah Science Centre. Films were complemented with experiments, hands-on activities and games to explain and re-enact the scientific correlations. Moreover the festival invited the show hosts Kåre and Emil of the Danish TV production “The Nerd Academy” to present their exciting experiments in a live science show. Additionally, robot demonstrations by Dr. Frank Dittmann of the Deutsches Museum München (Deutsches Museum – Masterpieces of Science and Technology) and Dubai-based company Edutech invited visitors to witness what robots can do and how they could help us in our everyday life.

For the first time the Goethe-Institut also organized a Science Day in Doha as a one-day version of the Science Film Festival. In cooperation with the German International School selected films were screened and content related activities engaged the students of the PASCH school in Doha. The Science Film Festival reached a total audience of 5 112 visi-tors in the United Arab Emirates and 100 visitors in Qatar.

durch Mercedes-Benz als Hauptsponsor, organisierte das Goethe-Institut Golf-Region das Science Film Festival zum zweiten Mal in den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten und der Golfregion.

Vorführungen fanden zwischen dem 31. Oktober und dem 9. November 2014 in der Dubai Children’s City und im Fujairah Science Centre statt. Die Filme wurden mit Experimenten, praktischen Aktivitäten und Spielen begleitet, um die wissenschaftlichen Beziehungen zu erklären und nachzuspielen. Außer-dem lud das Festival die Moderatoren Kåre und Emil, von der dänischen TV-Produktion “The Nerd Academy”, ein, um ihre aufregenden Experimente in einer Liveshow zu zeigen. Ergän-zend zeigten Roboter von Dr. Frank Dittmann vom Deutschen Museum München (Deutsches Museum – Meisterwerke der Wissenschaft und Technologie) und der in Dubai ansässigen Firma Edutech, den Besuchern, was Roboter alles können und wie sie uns in unserem täglichen Leben helfen. Zum ersten Mal hat das Goethe-Institut auch einen Wissen- schaftstag, als Ein-Tages-Version des Science Film Festivals, in Doha organisiert. In Zusammenarbeit mit der Deutschen internationalen Schule wurden ausgewählte Filme gezeigt und zu diesem Themenfeld Aktivitäten für Schüler der PASCH Schule in Doha angeboten. Das Science Film Festival erreichte ein Besucherzahl von 5.112 Besuchern in den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten und 100 Besucher in Katar.

INDONESIA 5TH EDITIONINDONESIEN 5. AUSGABE

The Science Film Festival in Indonesia was organized by the Goethe-Institut Indonesien in cooperation with Mercedes- Benz, HiLo School, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Jakarta, Institut Français Indonesia, Santika Indonesia Hotels & Resorts, Universitas Paramadina, KUARK and Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana as official festival partners. The Festival was officially opened by Anies Baswedan, Indonesian Minister of Culture and Primary & Secondary Education.

The Science Film festival screenings reached 59 175 visitors across Indonesia and took place from November 13 to Novem-ber 28, 2014, in 37 cities throughout Indonesia in coordination with 29 venue partners. The screenings and experiment activities were carried out by volunteers from Universitas Paramadina. Das Science Film Festival in Indonesien wurde vom Goethe- Institut Indonesien in Zusammenarbeit mit Mercedes-Benz, der HiLo School, der Deutschen Botschaft in Jakarta, dem Institut Français Indonesia, den Santika Indonesia Hotels & Resorts, der Universitas Paramadina, KUARK und der Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana als offizielle Festivalpartner organi-siert. Das Festival wurde offiziell durch Anies Baswedan, dem indonesischen Minister für Kultur und Bildung eröffnet.

Die Science Film Festival Vorführungen erreichten 59.175 Besucher in ganz Indonesien und war zwischen dem 13. November und dem 28. JORDAN 2ND EDITIONJORDANIEN 2. AUSGABE

In order to reach different groups of children all over Jordan, the Goethe-Institut Jordan decided to organise the Science Film Festival 2014 in cooperation with three Jordanian part-ner institutions: The Children’s Museum Jordan, the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation and the Jordan Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD). The official media partner of the festival was ”Ro’Ya TV” who broadcasted two reports on the festival within their popular family programme ”Dunya ya Dunya”. The festival was supported by Mercedes-Benz as the main sponsor. In total the Science Film Festival 2014 in Jordan reached 9 701 visitors.

Special guest of the opening of the Science Film Festival was Joachim Hecker from Germany with his renowned Science Show. All events took place in the venues of the partner


institutions from October 15 to October 30, 2014. A total of seventeen films were screened together with related hands-on experiments. And while the partner organizations provided school and family programmes, the Goethe-Institutfocused on a family day in 2014. This special programme for families took place in a public park on October 17 and was visited by many Jordanian families.

Moreover the Goethe-Institut Jordan could realize twelve visits to Jordanian Refugee Camps with the ”Eureka-Bus“ of the cooperation partner JOHUD and with the help of CARE International. Thus the programme of the Science Film Festi-val also reached Syrian refugee children and was very well received and appreciated. The Science Film Festival in Jordan is a project of the Goe-the-Institut as part of the German-Arabic transformation partnership, funded by the Federal Foreign Office.

Um verschiedene Gruppen von Kindern in ganz Jordanien zu erreichen, entschied sich das Goethe-Institut Jordanien für drei Partnerinstitutionen für das Science Film Festival: Das Children‘s Museum Jordan, die Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation und den Jordan Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD). Der offizielle Medienpartner des Festivals war „Ro‘Ya TV“, welches zwei Berichte über das Festival während des beliebten Familien-programms „Dunya ya Dunya“ brachte. Das Festival wurde durch Mercedes-Benz als Hauptsponsor unterstützt. Im Ganzen erreichte das Science Film Festival 2014 in Jordanien 9.701 Besucher.

Überraschungsgast für die Eröffnungszeremonie des Science Film Festivals war Joachim Hecker aus Deutschland mit sei-ner berühmten Wissenschaftsshow. Alle Veranstaltungen fanden in den Räumlichkeiten der Partnerorganisationen zwischen dem 15. Oktober und dem 30. Oktober 2014 statt. Insgesamt 17 Filme wurden zusammen mit praktischen Ex- perimenten gezeigt. Und während die Partnerorganisationen für das Schul- und Familienprogramm verantwortlich waren, lag der Fokus des Goethe-Instituts auf dem Familientag 2014. Dieses besondere Programm für Familien wurde am 17. Oktober in einem öffentlichen Park veranstaltet und

wurde von vielen jordanischen Familien angenommen.Außerdem realisierte das Goethe-Institut Jordanien 12 Besuche in jordanischen Flüchtlingslagern mit dem „Eure-ka-Bus“ mit dem Partner JOHUD und der Hilfen von CARE International. Somit konnten auch syrische Flüchtlinge am Programm des Science Film Festivals teilhaben. Das Science Film Festival in Jordanien ist ein Projekt des Goethe-Instituts im Rahmen der deutsch-arabischen Transfor-mationspartnerschaft. Gefördert durch das Auswärtige Amt.

LAO P.D.R. 3RD EDITIONLAOS 3. AUSGABE

In cooperation with the GIZ, DOKLAO, the Research Institute for Education and Science (RIES), the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Swiss Agency for Cooperation and Develop- ment (SDC), the Department of Cinema and the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism, PADETC and the Goethe- Institut Thailand organized the Science Film Festival 2014 in Laos. The festival activities in 2014 placed an emphasis on distant rural areas in order to help those with fewer oppor-tunities gain access to science. The screenings reached 11 886 visitors and took place from November 18 to December 14. The opening ceremony was held in Vientiane Capital at the Department of Cinema and screenings were organized in other five provinces: Attapeu, Sekong, Oudomxay, Luang Namtha, and Bokeo. In the provinces, the event was held at local schools over a period of five days. RIES and the Cinema Department were responsible for selecting schools to orga-nize the event and coordinate with relevant authorities in the targeted provinces. Doklao Center and the Cinema Depart-ment selected ten films and translated and synchronized them into Lao. Doklao Center trained six volunteers to help manage the event and organize activities in each province.

Die Festivalaktivitäten 2014 wurden in ländlichen Regionen des Landes abgehalten, um der dortigen Bevölkerung zu helfen, Zugang zu Wissenschaft zu bekommen. Die Vorführungen erreichten 11.886 Besucher und waren vom 18. November bis 14. Dezember zu sehen. Die Eröffnungs- zeremonie fand in der Hauptstadt Vientiane im Department of Cinema statt und Vorführungen wurden in fünf weiteren Pro-vinzen organisiert: Attapeu, Sekong, Oudomxay, Luang Namtha, and Bokeo. In den Provinzen wurde das Event an lokalen Schulen in einem Zeitraum von fünf Tagen organisiert. RIES und das Cinema Department waren verantwortlich für die Auswahl der Schulen und organisierten und koordinierten das Event in den relevanten Provinzen. Das Doklao Center und das Cinema Department wählten 10 Filme aus und übersetzten und synchronisierten diese in Laotisch. Das Doklao Center schulte sechs Volontäre um bei der Organisation und Durchführung des Events in den einzelnen Provinzen zu helfen.

MALAYSIA 4TH EDITIONMALAYSIA 4. AUSGABE

The Science Film Festival 2014 in Malaysia was organized by the Goethe-Institut Malaysia in cooperation with Mercedes- Benz, Siemens, the Malaysian Nature Society, the Ministry of Education, the German-Malaysian Institute, Petrosains, the Association of Science, Technology and Innovation and MAP Publika Solaris.

The festival was officially opened on October 16 at the Golden Screen Cinema in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur with film screenings, a press conference and technological demon-strations by project partners. In the context of the festi-val several Critical Thinking Camps were held for young students.

Within the festival period October 16 to November 16, more than 700 screenings took place in schools, colleges, universities and other educational venues all over the

country through the coordinated efforts of all the partners reaching 42 000 viewers.

Das Science Film Festival 2014 in Malaysia wurde in Zusammen- arbeit von Goethe-Institut Malaysia und Mercedes-Benz, Siemens, der Malaysian Nature Society, dem Ministry of Education, dem German-Malaysian Institute, Petrosains, der Association of Science, Technology and Innovation und MAP Publika Solaris organisiert.

Das Festival wurde am 16. Oktober offiziell im Golden Screen Cinema in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur mit Filmvorführungen, einer Pressekonferenz und technischen Vorführungen von Projekt-partner eröffnet. Im Zusammenhang mit dem Festival wurden mehrere “Critical Thinking Camps” für junge Studenten organisiert.

Während des Festivals vom 16. Oktober bis 16. November 2014 wurden mehr als 700 Vorführungen in Schulen, Colleges, Universitäten und andern Bildungseinrichtungen im ganzen Land veranstaltet und erreichten durch den Einsatz der Part-ner 42.000 Besucher.

MYANMAR 3RD EDITIONMYANMAR 3. EDITION

The third edition of Science Film Festival Myanmar was organized by the Goethe-Institut Myanmar in cooperation with Mercedes-Benz, the Ministry of Education, Karuna Myanmar Social Services (KMSS) and Myanmar YMCA between Novem-ber 15 and December 19, 2014. The opening ceremony was held on November 15 at UMFCCI with about 350 visitors.

The screenings took place from November 17 to December 19 in four different cities (Yangon, Mandalay, Bago and Ayeyarwaddy) and in three different states (Mon, Karen and Shan) reaching 26 762 visitors. The screenings were focused on the children from monastic schools, orphanages, youth development centers and government schools. The screenings and experiment activities were carried out by 18 volunteers.


Die dritte Ausgabe des Science Film Festival in Myanmar wurde vom Goethe-Institut Myanmar in Kooperation mit Mercedes-Benz, dem Bildungsministerium, Karuna Myanmar Social Services (KMSS) und Myanmar YMCA zwischen dem 15. November und dem 19. Dezember 2014 organisiert. Die Eröffnungsveranstaltung fand am 15. November im UMFCCI mit circa 350 Besuchern statt.

Zwischen dem 17. November und dem 19. November waren die Vorführungen in vier verschiedenen Städten (Yangon, Mandalay, Bago und Ayeyarwaddy) und in drei unterschiedlichen Staaten (Mon, Karen and Shan) zu sehen und erreich-ten 26.762 Besucher. Die Vorführungen wurden speziell für Kinder aus Klosterschulen, Waisenhäusern, Jugendzentren und staatlichen Schulen veranstaltet. Auch Experimente wurden im Rahmen der Vorführungen mit Hilfe von 18 Volontären durchgeführt.

PALESTINE 2ND EDITIONPALÄSTINA 2. AUSGABE

In Palestine, the Science Film Festival reached 16 200 visitors in 2014 and was co-organized by the Goethe-Institut Ramal-lah, the A. M. Qattan Foundation, the Institut Français, the General Consulate of France in Jerusalem, Al Nayzak Founda-tion, the Palestinian Museum – Welfare Association and the Birzeit University. Moreover it was conducted in partnership with the European Union Commission, EUNIC-Cluster Occu-pied Palestinian Territories, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and the United National Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees. The festival was supported by Mercedes-Benz as international key sponsor.

In its second year the festival was hosted by “Science Days Palestine 2014”. Screenings and hands-on activities were hosted from November 11 to December 15, 2014, by various educational and cultural institutions: Ni’lin Teachers Center, Al Nayzak Science House for Science and Al Qaiqab Botanic Garden in Ramallah, Palestine Museum for Natural History in Bethlehem, Jericho Child Center, Korea Palestine Center in Hebron, Dar Al Tifil Al Arabi Palestinian National Theatre in Jerusalem, Qalqilia Zoo and Cinema Jenin, Qattan Center for

the Child in Gaza and additionally in 46 other locations and 20 Palestinian cities, towns and villages. The official opening of the festival took place in Ramallah on November 12, 2014.

In Palästina erreichte das Science Film Festival 2014 16.200 Besucher und wurde in Kooperation mit dem Goethe-Institut Ramallah, der A. M. THE PHILIPPINES 5TH EDITIONPHILIPPINEN 5. AUSGABE

The Science Film Festival 2014 in the Philippines was organized by the Goethe-Institut Philippines in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Depart-ment of Education (DepEd), as well as generous support by Mer-cedes-Benz. The festival opened locally on November 4 at the Mind Museum and subsequent screenings took place across the archipelago, the concentration of which was in Metro Manila, where most of the partners and venues are located. Screenings were organized by the partners in their buildings or within their


network of schools, universities and office branches. DOST furthermore screened the films at their offices across the coun-try and the DepEd was responsible for making the films accessi-ble to schools inside and outside the Metro. The festival period in the Philippines was November 4 to December 14, 2014, and reached 103 945 viewers. The Philippines is therefore the first country outside of Thailand to break the 100 000 visitor mark, signifying a milestone for the Science Film Festival overall. Other partner institutions involved are the Ablan Foundation, the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, Cornerstone, Felta Foun-dation Inc., the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the Manila Ocean Park, Museo Pambata, the Natio-nal Library, the Philippine Science Centrum and the Quezon City Science Interactive Center. Private universities, schools and student organizations also took part – notable are the Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro, the German-European School Manila and the Leyte Normal University, which took the Festival to typhoon-ravaged Tacloban city in the Visayas islands. Student organizations were also involved, like the University of the Philippines Deutscher Verein and the Philip-pine Society for Youth Science Clubs, whose members facili-tated the experiments and games in some venues.

Das Festival startete am 4. November 2014 im Mind Museum und anschließend folg-ten Vorführungen inselübergreifend. Die Konzentration war jedoch auf den Ballungsraum Manila, wo die meisten Part-ner und Veranstaltungsorte liegen. Vorführungen wurden von den Partnern in ihren Gebäuden oder ihrem Netzwerk von Schulen, Universitäten und Büros organisiert. Ferner zeigte DOST die Filme in den Örtlichkeiten im ganzen Land und DepEd war verantwortlich dafür, dass die Filme Zugang zu Schulen in und außerhalb von Manila fanden. Die Festi-valdauer in den Philippinen war vom 4. November bis 14. Dezember 2014 und erreichte 103.945 Besucher. Die Philippi-nen sind das erste Land außerhalb Thailand’s die die 100.000 Besucherzahl Marke überschritten haben – ein wichtiger Meilenstein für das Festival insgesamt.

Andere Partnerorganisationen waren die Ablan Foundation, das ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, Cornerstone, die Felta Founda-tion Inc., das Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), dem Manila Ocean Park, Museo Pambata, der National Library, dem Philippine Science Centrum und dem Quezon City Science Interactive Center. SUDAN 1ST EDITIONSUDAN 1. AUSGABE

In its first year, the Science Film Festival in Sudan reached approx. 200 children in several private schools and at the Al Sajjanah Youth Centre in Khartoum.

The Science Film Festival Sudan was organized by the Goethe-In-stitut Sudan in cooperation with three Sudani schools and with the support of Mercedes-Benz as the main sponsor. Screenings were organized from November 16 to December 14, 2014, in Unity School, Ivory School, Malak Centre. Volunteers and tea-chers of the partner organizations carried out screenings and activities, assisted by staff from the Goethe-Institut.

For the preparation teachers had attended an introductory training workshop on how to use science films to promote science content and how to engage their pupils in activities related to technology, astronomy, environment and animals as well as storytelling.

In seinem ersten Jahr erreichte das Science Film Festival im Sudan circa 200 Kinder in verschiedenen Privatschulen und im Al Sajjanah Youth Centre in Khartum.

Das Science Film Festival Sudan wurde vom Goethe-Institut Sudan in Kooperation mit drei sudanesischen Schulen und der


Unterstützung durch Mercedes-Benz als Hauptsponsor organi-siert. Zwischen dem 16. November und dem 14. Dezember 2014 wurden an der Unity School, der Ivory School und dem Malak Centre Vorführungen gezeigt. Volontäre und Lehrer der Part-nerorganisationen führten die Vorstellungen und Aktivitäten durch und wurden von Mitarbeitern des Goethe-Instituts unterstützt.

Für die Vorbereitung mussten die Lehrer einen fortbildenden Workshop besuchen, um zu lernen wie man wissenschaftliche Filme verwendet um Schüler zu motivieren, sich Themen wie Astronomie, Umwelt und Tieren zu nähern und um Wissen- schaft anschaulich zu vermitteln.

THAILAND 10TH EDITIONTHAILAND 10. AUSGABE

In Thailand, the Science Film Festival 2014 reached 257 972 visitors and was organized by the Goethe-Institut Thai-land, the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology and the National Science Museum. This year, the event celebrated its 10th Anniversary in Thailand, where the Science Film Festival was initated in 2005. The year marked another significant milestone with Mercedes-Benz joining as International Key Sponsor.

A selection of 26 films were screened from November 10 to December 14, 2014, at the Faculty of Science Burapha Univer-sity, Nanmeebooks Learning Center, NSTDA Thailand Science Park, the Thai Film Archive, the National Science Museum Thailand, NSM Science Square, TK park, City Learning Park

Nakorn Sri Thammarat, Faculty of Science and Technology Chiang Mai Rajabhat University and through the IPST Trave-ling Festival at the Science Center for Education in Ekkamai and 18 other science centers throughout the country.Notable associated activities were the Genius workshops in cooperation with Mercedes-Benz Thailand, where children were able to learn hands-on about automotive technolgies, and a special open-air screening of the film “Björk’s Biophi-lia Live” in front of the Bangkok Art & Culture Centre, which attracted several hundred music and film enthusiasts.

Wichtige Rahmenaktivitäten waren der Genius-Workshops in Kooperation mit Mercedes-Benz Thailand, bei dem Kinder praktisch lernen konnten, wie automobile Technologien funktionieren und eine einzigartige Freiluft Vorführung des Films “Björk’s Biophilia Live” vor dem Bangkok Art & Culture Centre, was mehrere Hundert Musik- und Filmlieb- haber anzog.

VIETNAM 4TH EDITION VIETNAM 4. AUSGABE

The Science Film Festival is organized by the Goethe-Institut for the fourth time in Vietnam from October 24 to Decem-ber 15, 2014, with 20 Films from nine different countries. The Goethe-Institut cooperated with the NGO A&C (Center for Research Support and Development of Culture), which has a network of volunteers throughout the country as a valuable partner for the organization of the Science Film Festival. The festival was supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and sponsored by Mercedes Benz Vietnam.


The events were covered in all major newspapers, and some magazines in Hanoi and other cities and by several media partners, among which were the national TV channels VTV and ANTV, TTXVN, HTV, VTC10, VOV.

In cooperation with the NGO A&C, the Science Film Festi-val was carried out in nine cities and provinces: Hanoi, Vinh Phuc, Haiphong, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Hoi An, Dong Thap, Dak Lak, Ho Chi Minh City, reaching 25 680 viewers throug-hout the country.

Das Science Film Festival wurde zum vierten Mal vom Goethe- Institut Vietnam im Zeitraum zwischen dem 24. Oktober und dem 15. Dezember 2014 veranstaltet. 20 Filme aus neun Län-dern wurden gezeigt. Das Goethe-Institut kooperierte mit der NGO A&C (Center for Research Support and Development of Culture), welches ein Netzwerk aus Freiwilligen über das ganze Land verteilt hat und als wertvoller Partner des Science Film Festival agierte. Das Festival wurde vom Ministerium für Kultur, Sport und Tourismus unterstützt und von Mercedes Benz Vietnam gesponsert.

Die Events waren in allen großen Zeitungen und Zeitschriften in Hanoi und anderen Städten vertreten und von mehreren media-len Partnern unterstützt, unter denen sich auch die nationalen TV Sender VTV und ANTV, TTXVN, HTV, VTC10, VOV fanden.

In Zusammenarbeit mit dem NGO A&C, wurde das Science Film Festival in neun Städten und Provinzen veranstaltet: Hanoi, Vinh Phuc, Haiphong, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Hoi An, Dong Thap, Dak Lak, Ho Chi Minh City und erreichte so 25.680 Besucher im ganzen Land.

FILMSFILMEThe Science Film Festival presents a variety of films in four categories: Family Edutainment, Ecology & Enviroment, Natural Science, Life Science & Technology and Culture & History - to appeal to all age groups, but with a particular focus on content for young audiences.

In 2014, the Science Film Festival received 277 films from 50 countries, of which a shortlist of 71 films from 27 countries comprised the international film selection for the programme in each of the festival host countries. A panel of local science education experts curated a programme from the interna-tional selection for each country. All films are translated and synchronized into local languages to offer unrestricted access without language barriers.

The festival organizers would like to extend their sincere thanks to all filmmakers, producers and broadcasters for such overwhelming interest and support for the event. We are able to share the exciting world of science communica-tion through film and television content with hundreds of thousands of visitors, whose view of the world is enriched through these films.

Das Science Film Festival präsentiert eine Vielzahl an Filmen in den vier Kategorien Familienunterhaltung, Ökologie & Umwelt, Naturwissenschaft, Biowissenschaft & Technologien und Kultur & Geschichte, um allen Altersstufen gerecht zu werden, aber mit einem speziellen Fokus auf Inhalte für das junge Publikum.

2014 erhielt das Science Film Festival 277 Filme aus 50 Ländern, aus welchen 71 Filme aus 27 Ländern für die international Filmauswahl des Festivals in den einzelnen Gastländern gewählt wurden. Lokale Expertenteams wählten daraus ihr Programm für ihre Spielorte. Alle Filme werden in die jewei-lige Landessprache übersetzt und synchronisiert, um um ein besseres Verständnis ohne Sprachbarrieren zu ermöglichen.

Die Festivalorganisation möchte ihren aufrichtigsten Dank an alle Filmemacher, Produzenten und Sender für dieses starke Interesse und die Unterstützung des Events ausspre-chen. PRE-JURY AUSWAHL-JURYThe Science Film Festival endeavors to be effective as an international event, but first and foremost as national initiative in each of the host countries. In curating the festival programme it is therefore crucial to involve experts from partners in each country, who have in-depth knowledge about the local target audience when selecting films.

LY SOVANNYOUTH COORDINATOR KHMER YOUTH AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT (KYSD)

Ly Sovann is a senior student of the National University of Management NUM. He has been conducting science film screenings in Phnom Penh for two years in 2012 and 2013. He majored in English at the Faculty of Tourism. He used to work as a National Election Observer for the Committee for Free and Fair Election (COMFREL) in Cambodia. Furthermore, Ly Sovann has been involved with many organizations and attended non-formal education programmes in Phnom Penh, including Citizen Journalist. His passion is writing research papers related to health and science. Ly Sovann is the youth coordinator at Khmer Youth and Social Development (KYSD).

Ly Sovann ist Student der National University of Management NUM. Er leitete Wissenschaftsfilmvorführungen in Phnom Penh von 2012 bis 2013. Seine Hauptfächer an der Universi- tät waren Englisch und Tourismus. Er arbeitete auch als nationaler Wahlbeobachter für das Committee for Free and Fair Election (COMFREL) in Kambodscha. Keang Hy is a third year student at the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) in the Faculty of Agriculture Economic and Rural Development (AERD). She has been participating in the Science Film Festival since 2013 for the film screenings in Kampot province. Currently she is working as a youth volun-teer in the Media Group at Khmer Youth and Social Develop- ment (KYSD). She has a passion for science related films. Moreover, she enjoys working with students in rural areas in order to raise their awareness of science.

Keang Hy studiert im dritten Jahr an der Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) an der Fakultät für Agrarökonomie und ländliche Entwicklung. Seit 2013 hat sie am Science Film


Festival für die Filmvorführungen in der Kampot Provinz mitgearbeitet. Sie arbeitet als junge Freiwillige in der Medien- gruppe der Khmer Youth and Social Development (KYSD). Keang Hy widmet sich gerne wissenschaftlichen Filmen und arbeitet mit Studenten ländlicher Gebiete, um diese für die Wissenschaft zu sensibilisieren.

Lou Sokhim is a third year student at the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) in the faculty of Agriculture Economic and Rural Development (AERD). She has been participating in the Science Film Festival since 2012 in Phnom Penh and the Kampong Thom province. Lou Sokhim is a youth volunteer in the Research Group at Khmer Youth and Social Development (KYSD). She has experiences in the fields of human rights, natural resource protection and research. She likes sharing her experiences with students and children by facilitating and working together.

Ly Sreypov is a senior student at the Prek Leap National College of Agriculture (PLNCA). Her major at the college is in Veterinary Sciences. She is a youth volunteer in the Training Group at Khmer Youth and Social Development (KYSD). Ly Sreypov worked for film screenings in Phnom Penh, where she was responsible for the screening of Pour un Sourire d’Enfant (PSE) and other partners. She started volunteering in the Science Film Festival in 2013. Ly Sreypov works as an English teacher in a private school. She enjoys working with students in the fields of film and entertainment. Ly Sreypov realises that students want to see new science films to increase their understanding.

Kalyan Sum has a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Norton University. She has been involved in the Science Film Festival since its inception in Cambodia in 2009. Currently she works as the Communication and Community Media Coordinator for the Khmer Youth and Social Development organization in Phnom Penh. Kalyan Sum has been working for the Natural Resource Management and Climate Change Resilience programmes in three provinces in Cambodia: Kompong Chhnang, Kompong Speu and Kratie province.

Johannes Kast graduated from the European Media and Busi-ness Academy Hamburg in the field of Media and Communi-cation and from the University of Applied Science Mittweida in the field of Media Science. Currently he works for the Ger-man Cambodian Cultural Center in Phnom Penh (Meta House).

Johannes Kast absolvierte seine Studien an der Euro-pean Media and Business Academy Hamburg im Bereich Medien und Kommunikation sowie an der Fachhochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften Mittweida im Bereich Medienwissenschaften. Ayman Elsayed holds a Bachelor degree in Electronics and Communications from the Faculty of Engineering, Alexan-dria University in 2002, and joined the Bibliotheca Alexan-drina in the same year. Mr. El Sayed is the Deputy Director of the Planetarium Science Center at the Library of Alexan-dria, Egypt, since 2010. He has broad experience in managing informal education activities, programmes and events under the umbrella of Science and Technology. His network extends beyond Egypt as he has successfully implemented and esta-blished various collaborations with different international science centers and museums, where exchange of experience and know-how is an added value. Ayman Elsayed also designs and supervises educational activities related to children and the public at large. He is responsible of the Planetarium Science Center Hands on Science activities ope-rated by the affiliate centres in other Egyptian governorates.

Sein Netzwerk hat sich außerhalb Ägyptens ausgeweitet, so dass zahlreiche Kooperationen mit verschiedenen internationalen Wissenschaftszentren und Museen entstanden. Der daraus resultierende Erfahrungs- und Wissensaustausch ist sehr wertvoll. El Sayed gestaltet und überwacht Bildungsaktivi- täten bezüglich Kinder und der Öffentlichkeit im größe-ren Rahmen. Zudem ist er für die Planetarium Science Cen-ter Hands on Science Aktivitäten verantwortlich, die von den Partnerzentren in anderen ägyptischen Gebieten durchgeführt werden.

Osama Rayis is a leading scientist and General Manger at Africa City of Technology in Khartoum, Sudan. He holds a Ph.D. in computer engineering from Middle East Technical University. Furthermore, he studied at Khartoum Polytechnic, University of Paderborn in Germany and at Harvard. Dr. Osama has been working in the field of science education for the past 25 years. He is a senior member of the Education Society of IEEE, and he is involved in many educational activities in the region.

Samar Darwish Kirresh is the Senior Researcher leading the Empowerment Programme at the Walid and Helen Science Education Project (WHKSEP) at the Qattan Center for Educa-tional Research and Development – A.M. Qattan Foundation in Ramallah-Palestine. Samar, a Palestinian from Jerusalem, has a B.Sc. in Biology and Medical Technology and an MA in Science Education. She had an active career in teaching, tea-cher training and heading the science department at College des Frere in Jerusalem. Besides, she is a member of the Advisory Board for the College of Education at Birzeit Uni-versity. She joined WHKSEP as a Senior Researcher in 2011. She mainly works on coordinating and developing the Teacher Empowerment Programme. Her research and work topics of interest include: in-service professional develop-ment, interaction between science and the arts, science cartoons and animation for science learning and communication, and children’s images of science and scientists.

Ayah Younis specializes in hands-on educational programmes that are developed scientifically. Younis is currently the Education and Programme Assistant Manager at the Chil-dren’s Museum Jordan, where she works with the team on producing and implementing interactive and unconventional learning programmes for the children between two and twelve years old.

Apni Jaya Putra is mostly known as the creator of documenta-ries on TV. In 2004, he set up the department for documentaries at RCTI, where he and his award-winning team quickly gained recognition when under Apni’s guidance, the department won the gold medal at the Aljazeera Documentary Festival. This tradition and success was brought by Apni to KompasTV where he moved in 2010. During his time at the new TV station, Apni was once again able to receive many accolades for his work. The peak of his career came in Bengkulu in 2014, when he was awarded the “Piala Adinegoro” prize which was handed to him personally by Indonesia’s former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for his documentary on the forgotten people of Atambua.

Eugene De Moby Montaro, nick name Moby, is a student at Jubilee School in Kemayoran. Moby is 9 years old and currently in Grade 3 at the Full English Programme. His passion includes movies, music and sports; especially football and water sports. His interest in movies started when he was still in kindergarten, as he was introduced to movies by his father, who is in the film industry. Moby also learns Mandarin in school so he can understand basic


Mandarin language. He loves to play the piano and his dream is to become a music teacher for children living in villages.

Feri Latief is a freelance photo journalist. His images and articles have been published by several media outlets, like National Geographic Indonesia, Reader’s Digest Indonesia, Voice of Human Rights, as well as newspapers such as KOM-PAS, TEMPO, The Jakarta Globe, The Jakarta Post and others. He has received many awards for his journalistic work, inclu-ding the “Apresiasi Jurnalis Jakarta” award in 2010. Currently, he is focusing on his activities for the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI). Feri also likes to travel around Indone-sia and share his knowledge about photo journalism in the remote areas of the country that he visits.

She is also part of the SMAK 3 Student Council as the secretary of Section 4: Science and Technology and a member of the girls’ basketball club. Her interests include music, science and languages. She loves playing the flute and is currently intere-sted in learning wind instruments.

Ucu Agustin wrote for magazines and newspaper since she was a college student, majoring in Islamic study. Ucu experimented with short documentary films. ”Farewell My School” was Ucu’s first children’s documentary, which premiered at IDFA 2013.

Athidxay Bouandaoheaung has been working in the Lao film industry for 10 years, from production to distrubition. He is part of a new generation of Lao filmmakers who are using media to support the development of education in Laos. He runs the DOKLAO center as a Media for Life and Learning focal point.

Dr. Torsten studied German Literature, Linguistics and History at the Universities of Rostock and Berlin. He obtained a PhD in History specializing in World War II. Dr. Schaar worked as a Lecturer for German Studies at Silpakorn and Thammasat University in Bangkok and for INTEC/UiTM Shah Alam and is currently employed as Senior Lecturer at University Putra Malaysia. He wrote several books and articles on Hitler Youth in World War II and on feature films in language teaching.

Dr. Torsten Schaar studierte deutsche Literatur, Linguistik und Geschichte an der Universität in Rostock und Berlin in Deutsch-land. Er erhielt seinen Doktor in Geschichte, spezialisiert auf den Zweiten Weltkrieg. Dr. Schaar arbeitete als Dozent für Ger-manistik an der Silpakorn und Thammasat University / Bangkok, für INTEC/UiTM Shah Alam und ist derzeitig als Dozent an der University Putra Malaysia beschäftigt. Stephenie re-joined the Malaysian Nature Society after being away for a year contributing her services towards the Freedom Film Festival by Pusat KOMAS, a human rights NGO in Malaysia. Stephenie is currently E-Media Officer for the MNS where her duties involve updating, coordinating and managing the many online platforms of the society. Her aim is to constantly use e-media to mobilize society as well as to create awareness and educate the masses about Malaysia’s environment, its value and its threats.


Stephenie trat der Malaysian Nature Society 2010 als Beauftragte für Events und als Hauptkoordinatorin der 70. Jubiläumsfeier der MNS bei. Während ihres Dienstes als Beauftragte für Events hatte sie Berührung mit den vielfäl- tigen Herausforderungen des Landes und umweltlichen Er- folgen, die MNS in den vergangenen Jahren erzielt hatte.

Nachdem Stephenie ein Jahr lang für das Freedom Film Festi-val der Pusat KOMAS, einer Menschenrechtsorganisation in Malaysia, gearbeitet hatte, kehrte sie zu der Malaysian Nature Society zurück. Syed Nizam Syed Idris joined GMI as a Technical Training officer in 1997. He is now the Head of Section who reports to the Head of Industrial Electronics Department, where he manages a section which consists of twenty technical training officers, four technicians and some high technology techni-cal training equipment. This section is responsible for any technical education and vocational training which is related to automation and mechatronic technologies. He is also the advisor to GMI Robot Society, which successfully took part in technical competitions such as MIROC in 2012, 2013 and 2014 (organized by UNIMAP) as well as the Shell Eco- Marathon Asia 2014.

Kaung Hla Zan is an English teacher and a teacher trainer. He is currently involved in the development and translation of teacher support materials with Mote Oo Education, a local NGO. He has worked as a social development worker for over four years where he had the opportunity to work with education workers from different parts of Myanmar. Furthermore, Kaung Hla Zan worked as a teacher trainer to help education centers with curriculum development and teacher development programmes that includes the use of educational films.

Kaung Hla Zan ist ein Englischlehrer und Lehrertrainer. Derzeitig ist er an der Entwicklung und Übersetzung von unterstützendem Material für die Lehrer mit Mote Oo Education, einer lokalen NGO, beschäftigt. Naw Mar Moora is a young woman educator from Myanmar who has strong passions for higher education. She started out her career as a lecturer of English Literature at Liberal Arts program, Myanmar Institute of Theology in 2007 and she has designed syllabi and taught different literature subjects such as fiction, novels, short stories, Musical drama and films. Along with her teaching career in the Liberal Arts programme, she has helped out both local and international NGOs in doing research and producing educational materials for Children Literature, Gender and Women Rights awareness materials. She has translated several research books on women development and also on LGBT rights issues.

Currently, she is working as Dean of Students cum Lecturer of English Literature in the Liberal Arts programme. In 2012, she was selected as fellow for the United Board for Christian Higher Education Fellow programme and she has accomplished her first placement at De La Salle University in the Philip- pines in February 2014.

She has been a youth volunteer in Myan-mar YMCA’s activities since 2008 and is now the Honorary Secretary of Myanmar YMCA Youth Department. She is a graduate

from the University of Distance Education, Mandalay, with a Bachelor in English and completed a Diploma in International Relations at Yangon University. Besides her education, she is a member of Eulogia Singers Group and helps as church choir leader in her free time. She also gives private piano lessons to children and has been a member of the Science Film Fes- tival Myanmar since 2013.

Rita Khin is an enthusiastic photograp-her from Myanmar who is interested in street photography. She did a photo essay about a street wandering girl in Yan-gon as one of the photo projects of the Yangon Photo Festi-val. She has a B.A. in English Language and Literature from

the Liberal Arts Programme, Myanmar Institute of Theo-logy. Since her graduation in 2013, she has been working as a translator and interpreter aside from her photography. She has done translations for various research projects and radio programmes. Her experience as translator and interpreter covers subjects such as gender equality, women issues, conflict, risk management and planning.

Ruby Roan-Cristobal, a B.S. Biology graduate of the Univer-sity of the Philippines-Diliman, is a seasoned science com-munication specialist, a broadcaster and project develop-ment manager having dedicated more than 30 years of her career in planning and implementing programmes and proje-cts that stimulate the interests of the youth in science and


technology. Armed with passion in communication, she pursued a Master of Professional Studies in Development Communication degree at the UP Open University and later took Ph.D. in Communication at UP Diliman.

She now heads the S&T Manpower Education Research and Promotions Division of the Science Education Institute- Department of Science and Technology (SEI-DOST), taking charge of science education research, S&T culture promotion, and information systems and IT infrastructure development works in the Institute. She continues to design and implement innovative programmes that will influence the current gene-ration to embrace S&T and innovation as a way of life and as the best way forward.

Joseph R. Jacob has spent most of his career life in the field of education as professional physical science teacher and school academic head. His desire to improve the quality of education in his country has lead him to serve in the Depart-ment of Education as Education Programme Specialist where he takes charge of the development of science curricula, planning and conduct of teacher and school administrator capacity-building activities, school guidelines and policy formulation, and nationwide assessment and monitoring of education programmes. He is also the programme manager of all the Regional Science High Schools, feeder schools for the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program. Because of his passion for scientific research he got involved in the selection of candidates to be sent to compete in the annual International Science and Engineering Fair being held in the USA. He has become an international and nationwide resource speaker on various education-related topics such as assessment, instructional leadership and curriculum mapping to name a few.

She also writes a weekly science column for Rappler.com called ”Science Solitaire.” She is currently the curator of The Mind Museum, a science museum located in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

She handles the 14 American Corners situated in Universities located throughout the Philippines. American Corners provide information about the United States and access to English language learning and resources, conduct educational and cultural programs, and promote interaction with alumni of U.S. universities and U.S. govern-ment exchange programs. Ms. Wooden oversees all aspects of American Corner (AC) operations, including reporting, staff training, and preparation of the annual AC funding request. She maintains professional relationships with high and mid- level contacts throughout the country that are important for the ACs and their programming. Some programmes of the American Corners supports the Mission’s objective to facili-tate Philippine efforts to mitigate the impact of natural disas- ters and increase resilience to global climate change through natural resource management and disaster risk reduction. American Corners throughout the Philippines host environ-mental awareness programmes across the country through films to spark discussions about climate change.

Ronn graduated with a Bachelor from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Advertising from Bulacan State University in 2008. He has worked as a freelance artist until now. Aside from embracing arts, Ronn also loves to share thoughts with people, talking to different people of different ages. He worked as a guide at the Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center at SM Mall of Asia from 2009 to 2010. In 2011, Ronn was given a chance to be a part of the foundation of the Museo Pambata. He used to work as a Museum Guide and now as a Head Guide. The Guides Department is facilitating arts and crafts activities and pro-moting recycling to children.

Ronn schloss mit einem Bachelor der Fakultät der Feinen Künste in Werbung sein Studium an der Bulacan State Univer-sity 2008 ab. Bis heute arbeitet er als freier Künstler. Neben der Kunst strebt Ronn den Austausch mit Menschen, auch

Menschen verschiedenen Alters, an. Er arbeitete als Reise- führer im Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center in der SM Mall of Asia in den Jahren 2009 bis 2010. Danach entschloss er sich, seinen Fokus wieder auf die Künste zu setzen und nahm an Ausstellungen teil. Dabei realisierte er allerdings, dass er die Verbindung mit Kindern und anderen Menschen vermisste. 2011 hatte Ronn die Möglichkeit, Teil der Gründung des Museums Museo Pambata zu sein. Er arbeitete als Museumsführer und ist nun der Leiter dieser Abteilung. Diese Abteilung ermöglicht Kunst- und Handwerksaktivitäten und fördert das Recyceln für Kinder an jedem ersten und letzten Sonntag des Monats.

Egbert Marasigan Amoncio is a 4th Year B.S. Statistics major, studying at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. Coming from a science high school, his love and passion for science never ceased. For that reason, he joined the largest science umbrella organization called Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs. This organization aims to promote Public Understanding of Science Technology and the Environment. Currently, he is the President of the National Executive Coun-cil, leading an arm of volunteers towards attaining the afore-mentioned thrust.

Alongside PSYSC, he is an active member in different kinds of organizations namely Political, Cultural, Marketing and Academic organizations. His advocacy in student-volunteerism brought him all the way to Frankfurt, Germany in a recently concluded social internship called Global Community Devel-opment Programme. His unparalleled enthusiasm in serving society made him decide to pursue a degree in Masters of Nonprofit Financial Management abroad. Now, with his expertise in event organization, he continues to create diffe-rent socially relevant events.

Sein Eintreten für ehrenamtliche Studenten- aktivitäten brachte ihn bis nach Frankfurt in Deutschland, zu einem kürzlich abgeschlossenen Praktikum im globalen Gemeinschaftsentwicklungsprogramm. Aufgrund seines begei-sterten Engagements für die Gesellschaft beschloss er, einen Master in Nonprofitfinanzverwaltung im Ausland abzusch-ließen. He works for the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity’s Communication and Public Affairs unit. As a multimedia pro-ducer/writer he has to write and produce audiovisual presen-tations, and to design publications and other communication materials. He is also part of ACB’s social media team. He also worked for UPLB’s Office of Public Relations as a University Extension Associate II from 2007-2013. As a freelance gra-phic designer, some of his works include the illustrations for

Trang Quynh Nguyen has a Master in Film and Television Studies. She is a lecturer at the Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema with experience in teaching, professional script- writing, film and television production. She has produced many fun learning programmes for children on Vietnamese TV. She also works for the Centre of Research, Support and Development of Culture in the capacity of setting up and managing film development projects in Vietnam. She joined the Science Film Festival in Vietnam in 2011 and worked with thousands of children all over the country. She wishes to further her career in education and arts for children.

Trang Quynh Nguyen hat einen Master in Film- und Fernseh- wissenschaften. His current research effort is devoted entirely to physics education at secondary school level and college level. Giap Van Duong (1976) received his Bachelor of Engineering from Hanoi University of Technology in 1999 and Master of Engineering from Chonbuk

National University, South Korea, in 2002, as well as a PhD from the Vienna University of Technology, Austria, in 2006. He was a postdoctoral researcher at Vienna University of Technology from 2006 to 2007 and University of Liverpool from 2007 to 2010, before joining the National University of Singapore from 2010 to 2012 as a research scientist. His areas of expertise are magnetic materials, material physics and nanophysics. In 2013, he returned to Vietnam to start his education projects, including GiapSchool, Book4Experts and Books4Children.

Kirsten Schneid is Festival and Project Coordinator of the PRIX JEUNESSE Foundation, a lobby organization dedicated to promoting quality in children’s television worldwide based in Munich. Kirsten organizes the bi-annual PRIX JEUNESSE INTERNTATIONAL, the world’s leading festival for children’s and youth TV programmes, and organizes and conducts training for children’s TV producers all around the globe. She also oversees the media-literacy initiatives for children which the foundation has developed in recent years.

Sie betreut zusätzlich auch die Medien-Bildung-Initiativen für Kinder, welche die Stiftung in den letzten Jahren entwickelt hat.

Mag Cruz Hatol was an arts and theater enthusiast and uni-versity professor prior to working in media. He was also a ranking official of the Cultural Center of the Philippines before becoming deeply involved in the advocacy for child sensitive television and responsible media. He became Chief Operating Officer of a major broadcast station’s development foundation and eventually Secretary General of Anak TV, an association of Philippine television networks whose key mission is to empower viewers through media education. A recipient of several international grants in art studies, media and culture, Hatol was former Chairman of the government’s National Council for Children’s Television.

Mag Cruz Hatol war ein Kunst- und Theaterliebhaber und Universitätsprofessor, bevor er in der Medienbranche tätig wurde. Er war außerdem ein hochrangiger Mitarbeiter des Kulturzentrums der Philippinen bevor er als Verfechter des einfühlsamen und verantwortlichen Kinderfernsehens auftrat. Er wurde CEO einer der wichtigsten Entwicklungs-stiftungen für Rundfunkstationen und schließlich General-sekretär des Anak TVs; ein Zusammenschluss von philippi-nischen Fernsehsendern, die sich zum Ziel gesetzt haben, Zuschauer durch Medien zu bilden und zu fördern. Als Em- pfänger von unterschiedlichen internationalen Preisen in der Kunst-, Medien- und Kulturlandschaft war Hatol auch ehema-liger Vorsitzender des ministeriellen, nationalen Konzils für Kinderfernsehen.

Naila Al Mansoory has a degree in Microbiology from the United Arab Emirates University in Al-Ain. She worked as a medical lab technologist with the Dubai Medical Authority and joined Children’s City in 2005 as an educational pro-gramme officer. Naila was responsible for the development of educational programmes and public events programmes.She is heading the traveling exhibitions project team from 2013 to 2017 for Children’s City.

Sie arbeitete als medizinische Labortechnikerin für das Dubai Medical Authority und trat der „Children’s City“ 2005 als Mitarbeite-rin im Bildungsprogramm bei. From 1988 to 2013, David Kleeman was President of the Ame-rican Center for Children and Media, promoting the exchange of ideas, expertise and information as a means for building quality. In May 2013, he broadened his focus, and is now building a unique new global kids & family ”think tank” as Senior Vice President of Insights Programs and PlayVange-list for PlayCollective. He remains a 2013 Senior Fellow of the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children’s Media, and a Governor of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. He writes extensively for trade and general press, including commentaries for the Huffington Post and Kidscreen.

Von 1988 bis 2013 war David Kleeman President des ame-rikanischen Zentrums für Kinder und Medien und brachte den Gedanken- und Expertenaustausch als wichtige Grund-lage für Qualitätssicherung voran. Im Mai 2013 erweiterte er seinen Fokus und entwickelt nun eine einzigartige, globale Kinder- und Familien-“Denkfabrik” als Vizepräsident des Insights Programs and PlayVangelist for PlayCollective. Er bleibt dem Fred Rogers Zentrums für frühes Lernen und Kin-dermedien als leitender Wissenschaftler erhalten und ist außerdem einer der Präsidenten der Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Er schreibt wissenschaftliche Beiträge für Handelsblätter und die allgemeine Presse, Kommentare für die Huffington Post und Kidscreen inbegriffen.


ACTIVITIESAKTIVITÄTEN

An integral part of the Science Film Festival is the effort to provide activities that accompany the film screenings. In order to facilitate the young audience in fully appreciating some of the themes explored, there are fun experiments or hands-on learning games offered in relation to the films at screenings, which aim to further make the content accessible.

In workshops, organizers from participating countries exchange and develop ideas on how to incorporate entertaining and educational activities which complement the films. Through this interdisciplinary approach, which is a key strength of the Science Film Festival, the event seeks to provide an effective and enjoyable learning environment.

Ein wesentlicher Bestandteil des Science Film Festivals sind die Bemühungen an die Filmvorführungen praktische Aktivitäten anzuknüpfen. Um dem jungen Publikum auch eine hands-on Anwendung einiger der in den Filmen vorgestellten Themen zu ermöglichen, gibt es zu den Vorführungen Aktivitäten und Live-Experimente, um den Inhalt nachhaltig zu vermitteln.

In Workshops tauschen sich die Organisatoren der teilneh-menden Länder aus und Ideen, wie unterhaltende Lernformen die Inhalte der Filme vertiefen können. Dieser interdisziplinäre Ansatz ist ein Hauptmerkmal des Science Film Festivals, das so eine ansprechende und unterhaltsame Lernerfahrung schafft.


ACTIVITIESAKTIVITÄTEN

On September 4-5, 2014, the International Science Film Festi-val Exchange and Activities Workshop took place in Bang-kok, Thailand, with representatives from nine countries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The objective of the workshop was to foster an exchange between organizers of the Science Film Festival from the different nations and to consolidate activity ideas as guideline for all organizers. In 2014, Matthias Löwe, an interactivity designer from Berlin, consulted the group on the development of learning games.

Furthermore, in 2014 a digital resource section was launched on the festival website where all activity guidelines can be downloaded for teachers and volunteers to use prior or after visiting the Science Film Festival with a class.

Am 4. und 5. September 2014 fand der “International Science Film Festival Exchange and Activities Workshop” mit den Organisatoren und Teilnehmern aus neun Ländern in Bang-kok, Thailand, statt. Ziele des Workshops waren der Austausch und die Erarbeitung eines Leitfadens für die Organisatoren der unterschiedlichen Länder. 2014 hat Mat-thias Löwe, ein Interaktiv Designer aus Berlin, die Gruppe in der Entwicklung von Lernspielen beraten.

Seit 2014 gibt eine digitale Publikation auf der Webseite des Festivals Lehrern und ehrenamtlichen Helfern Zugriff auf den Leitfaden für Aktivitäten und motiviert zu deren Einsatz in der Klasse.

GENIUS WORKSHOP

In Thailand, the Science Film Festival organized two rounds of Genius workshop programmes in cooperation with Merce-des-Benz Thailand. Genius, Daimler’s young knowledge com-munity, seeks to encourage children to read, listen and above all experiment from an early age. The workshops hope to open up the world of technology to young minds and give them the opportunity to recognize – and develop – their own potential in STEM subjects.

In Thailand organisierte das Science Film Festival in Koope-ration mit Mercedes-Benz Thailand zwei Genius-Workshop Programmtage. Genius, Daimler’s junge Wissensgemeinschaft, hat sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, Kinder schon ab einem frühen Alter, für lesen, lernen und experimentieren zu begeistern. Der Workshop möchte die Welt der Technologien jungen Köpfen näher bringen und ihnen die Möglichkeit geben, ihre eigenen Ideen zu verwirklichen und das eigene Potential in MINT Projekten zu finden.

BJÖRK’S BIOPHILIA LIVE

In Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Palestine, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam special screenings were held of the documentary “When Björk Met David Attenbo-rough” exploring the artist’s recent innovative multimedia project and the concert film “Biophilia Live” by Nick Fenton and Peter Strickland.

The film is an audio-visual exploration at the crossroads between science, music and technology and is inspired by the relationship between musical structures and natural phenomena, from the atomic to the cosmic.

In Kamboscha, Indonesien, Malaysia, Palästina, Thailand, den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten und Vietnam wurden Spezial-vorführung von “When Björk Met David Attenborough” gezeigt, welche den Zuschauern das neue, innovative Multimedia-Pro-jekt von Björk präsentierte und sie für den Film ”Biophilia Live” (von Nick Fenton und Peter Strickland) begeisterte.

Der Film ist eine audio-visuelle Entdeckungsreise in die Ver-flechtung von Wissenschaft, Musik und Technik, inspiriert von der Verbindung musikalischer Strukturen mit Naturphänome-nen kleinster atomarer bis kosmischer Bedeutung.

ASEAN CO-PRODUCTION I GOT IT!

The Goethe-Institut in cooperation with broadcasters in Bru-nei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao P.D.R., Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam have joined efforts on the co-production of a unique regional knowledge TV-series for children titled “I Got It!” since 2009.

The project aims at sustainable development of locally pro-duced science & factual programmes, by combining a long term strategy of progressive capacity building measures with actual production, aiming at an international standard and embracing cross-border cooperation and intercultural exchange. So far over 100 episodes have been aired and the sixth season of “I Got It!” is being produced in 2015 indepen-dently between the broadcasters, marking a major milestone for the project.

Das Goethe-Institut hat in Zusammenarbeit mit Rundfunkpro-grammen in Brunei, Kambodscha Indonesien, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, den Philippinen, Thailand und Vietnam seit 2009 “I Got It!”, eine Koproduktion einer einzigartigen, regionalen TV-Serie für Kinder geschaffen.

Das Projekt hat zum Ziel, eine nachhaltige Entwicklung von lokal produzierten Wissenschafts- und Sachfilmen zu ermöglichen, indem eine Langzeitstrategie für fortschrittliches Planen mit der aktuellen Produktion abgestimmt wird, um einen interna-tionalen Standard zu erfüllen und Kooperationen und interkul-turellen Austausch miteinbindet. Bisher sind über 100 Sendun-gen gezeigt worden und 2015 wird die sechste Staffel von “I Got It!” von den Sendern unabhängig produziert, was einen Meilenstein dieses Projektes setzt.

EVALUATIONEVALUATIONAn extensive evaluation of the Science Film Festival visitors in 2014 was conducted with a comprehensive survey of 24 130 questionnaires filled out impartially by audiences from venues in participating countries and evaluated by an unbiased party.

The sources of the individual countries number as follows: Cambodia (2 667), Egypt (124), Indonesia (3 000), Jordan (1 661), Palestine (129), the Philippines (8 860), Thailand (3 594), the Gulf Region (792) and Vietnam (3 303). The results of this study empirically put forward the effectiveness of the Science Film Festival:

LIGHT LICHT

Throughout his life the German writer and statesman Johann Wolfgang von Goethe had a deep fascination for the physical and metaphorical effects of light on humans. From sunsets to rainbows, from the blues of the sky and the ocean, to the remarkable range of colours of plants and animals, our first experiences of light and colour are through what we see in the natural world.

However, the importance of light reaches far beyond life on Earth. Through major scientific discoveries and technologi-cal advancements, light has helped us to see and better understand the universe. 2015 marks an important milestone in the history of physics: one hundred years ago, in November 1915, Albert Einstein wrote down the famous field equations of General Relativity, which showed through a series of experiments centred on the concept of light, how light was at the centre of the very structure of space and time.

All over the globe, people are using light to discover solutions for society’s most pressing problems. From 3D printing to bringing energy solutions to developing regions, light is key in driving economies and encouraging development in the 21st Century. It has revolutionized medicine, opened up international communication via the Internet, and continues to be central to linking cultural, economic and political aspects of the global society.

For these reasons and more, the Science Film Festival invites audiences in 2015 to discover the different roles light and its applications play in our everyday lives and what it reveals about the nature of the universe.


LIGHT LICHT

Während seines gesamten Lebens hatte der deutsche Dichter und Gelehrte Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ein großes Interesse an physikalischen und metamorphischen Effekten des Lichts auf den Menschen. Vom Sonnenuntergang bis zum Regenbogen, vom Blauen des Himmels und der Meere, zu der beachtenswerten Anzahl an Farben der Pflanzen- und Tierwelt – unsere ersten Erfahrungen mit Licht und Farben machen wir in unserer natürlichen Umgebung.

Jedoch ist die Bedeutung des Lichts viel größer als nur für das Leben auf der Erde. Durch wichtige wissenschaftliche Entdeckun-gen und technische Errungenschaften hat uns Licht geholfen, die Welt anders zu sehen und zu verstehen. 2015 ist ein wichtiger Meilenstein in der Geschichte der Physik: 100 Jahre sind vergangen seit Albert Einstein im November 1915 seine bahnbrechende Relativitätstheorie niedergeschrieben hat, die uns zeigt, das Licht im Zentrum von Zeit und Raum steht.

Überall auf der Welt nutzen Menschen Licht um Lösungen für existenzielle Probleme der Gesellschaft zu finden. Von 3D-Drucken bis zur Energieversorgung von strukturschwachen Regionen, Licht spielt die zentrale Rolle in wirtschaftlich starken und aufstrebenden Nati-onen des 21. Jahrhunderts. Es hat die Medizin revolutioniert, öffnete die internationale Kommunikation via Internet und bleibt wei-terhin ein zentraler Bestandteil bei der Verbindung von kulturellen, ökonomischen und politischen Aspekten der globalen Gesellschaft.

Wegen dieser und zahlreicher weiterer Gründe lädt das Science Film Festival sein Publikum ein, 2015 mehr über die zentrale und diverse Rolle und Anwendung des Lichtes in unserem täglichen Leben zu lernen und zu erfahren, was es uns über unser Univer-sum verrät.
