School Sixth Form Performance and Assessment Report 2013/14 Unvalidated data February 2015 114397 Stantonbury Campus URN UPIN 110526 The sixth form performance and assessment (PANDA) report is intended to aid school improvement and to support the inspection of school sixth forms. The report presents data for: performance of students who are at the end of Key Stage 5 results within the academic year 2013/14. The level 3 value added (L3VA) scores and the aggregated academic and vocational attainment are for students at the end of Key Stage 5, showing their performance for the whole key stage as in the Performance Tables. The data used for average point score per entry and thresholds by qualification and subject are for results for Year 12 to Year 14 students for the academic year 2013/14 only. The L3VA score for aggregated academic qualifications excludes discounted AS levels. However, discounted AS levels are included in the AS level VA scores at qualification and subject level (chart 6.2 and table 6.7). The inclusion of discounted AS levels at qualification and subject level is to reflect the data for all entries. The 2012/13 AS level VA scores have been recalculated using this approach, so differ from those shown in the 2012/13 PANDA. The change in L3VA cohort from in-year results in 2011/12 to end of Key Stage 5 performance in 2012/13 means that VA scores in charts 6.1, 6.2, 6.6 and 6.7 are not true time series. In addition to data on progress shown by value added, and on attainment, the PANDA includes experimental data on destinations and on GCSE English and mathematics. The national figures for different measures are based on results from differing ranges of providers, as shown in the notes section at the back of this report. Notes on the cohorts of students, statistical significance and minimum standards, with details for data sources and contact points, can also be found at the back of this report.

The sixth form performance and assessment (PANDA) report is intended to aid school improvement and to support the inspection of school sixth forms.

* The figure for the number of students with results included in the 2013/14 attainment data can differ from the number

on roll for the following reasons: students on two-year courses (e.g. BTEC extended diploma); there is a discrepancy

between the January census NC year group and the year group in the attainment data; or results for level 1/2

qualifications are not included in the KS5 attainment data.

Chart 5.2: Value-added scores: disadvantaged students at end of KS5 cohort – experimental

Please note: The data have been produced by aggregating VA scores using the DfE L3VA Ready Reckoner; students are

identified as CLA/FSM in the attainment data. There are two indicators used in this report to indicate a disadvantaged

student: 1) known to be eligible for FSM in the last six years 6, or is a child looked after continuously for 6 months during

the year, at the end of KS4; and 2) known to be eligible for FSM in January 2014 census. The data are experimental, and

should be treated with caution due to the small numbers of students in the CLA/FSM group.

[2] A difference of one grade at A level represents two grades at AS level.

[3] The figures include AS level results discounted by A level in the same subject.

[1] The cohort of students for the 2012/13 and 2013/14 L3VA is different from 2011/12; only students

completing their KS5 study in 2012/13 and 2013/14 are included in the L3VA scores, and scores are for

qualifications taken during their KS5 study. This means the 2012/13 and 2013/14 AS level L3VA scores in chart

6.2 will include results from 2011/12 and 2012/13.

'Destination not sustained' means the student was recorded as having education or employment

participation in the year September to August but did not have continuous participation from October to

March. The student may have had a maximum of 2 months recorded NEET in the participation period

October to March.

'Destination not sustained/recorded NEET' means the student was recorded as having education or

employment participation in the year September to August but did not have continuous participation from

October to March. The student had between 3 and 6 months (inclusive) recorded NEET in the participation

period October to March.

OR

The student had no record of education, employment or training but was recorded as NEET at some point in

the year September to August.

'Activity not captured in data' means the young person was not found in an education, employment or a

recorded NEET destination. Possible reasons for this could be that the young person was attending an

independent college or school, a Scottish or Welsh college or school, they have left the country, are in

custody or their whereabouts are not known.

means the data have been suppressed as the school has fewer than 6 students in the cohort, or small

numbers, such as 1 and 2, in the destination. Results are not shown because of the risk of an individual

student being identified.

The number of students has been rounded to the nearest 10.

means that there are no pupils in the cohort.

means the percentage is less than 0.5% but greater than 0%.

Zero means exactly zero pupils in the destination.

The figures in this table are from the DfE statistical first release Destinations of key stage 4 and key stage 5

pupils: 2012 to 2013 - Key stage 5 institution level tables (including characteristics) - SFR01/2015. The data

show the percentage of students in 2011/12 who entered an A Level or other level 3 qualification that went

on to or remained in an education or employment destination in 2012/13.

Number of students in the 2011/12 end of KS5 cohort who entered for a level 3 qualification.

Sustained for the first two terms, October to March.

Includes students who have been in a sustained education, a sustained employment/training or a sustained

education/employment/training combination destination for the first two terms, October to March.

Interpreting the data: statistical significance and the use of confidence intervals

Interpreting confidence intervals

Chart 1

Statistical significance Not sig Sig - Sig + No CINumber 6 10 57 1

School rate 220.0 33.0 504.7 35.1

National rate 217.3 82.3 457.8 38.2

Difference from national rate 2.7 -49.3 46.9 -3.1

95% CI 16.3 30.7 11.8

For attainment, the calculation looks at the range of values in the sample. The chart below shows where

there is one result and no confidence interval ('no CI' in chart 1 below); the confidence interval is not

calculated/given when there are fewer than 5 results. The level 3 value-added score confidence interval

calculation presents values for one or more results.

Within the PANDA report, a difference is described as `significant’, and highlighted blue or green, if it

can be considered to be statistically significant. The statistical significance of the differences from

national figures have been assessed using 95% confidence intervals. Confidence intervals are a measure

of the statistical precision of an estimate and show the range of uncertainty around the estimated figure.

For average point score and grade threshold charts, where qualifications contain four or fewer learners,

no confidence interval is presented, as the small sample size means that it is not possible to make a

robust judgement about performance relative to the national average.

Chart 1 below shows examples of whisker lines above and below the plotted point. The confidence

interval is shown by the length of the line above the point, and by the length of the line below the point.

The data point plotted on the graph reflects the scores of the students on a particular day. The range of

uncertainty reflected by the confidence intervals allows for the fact that a different group of students

would attain slightly different results. The size of the confidence interval is largely determined by the

number of students and the variability of their results; smaller school cohorts will widen the intervals, as

we have less evidence upon which to say that a result is statistically significant.

If the range of the confidence interval does not cross the zero value in the chart, then it can be said that

the difference between the value plotted in the chart and the national figure is significant and that we

would expect the provider to be this effective around 95% of the time. It is significantly above (sig+)

the national figure or significantly below it (sig-), as shown in chart 1 below. The same colours have

been used throughout the report, in charts and tables, to indicate statistical significance.

If the confidence interval around a figure overlaps zero in the charts in the PANDA, we cannot say with

certainty that there is more than a chance difference between the school and national figures ('not sig'

in chart 1 below).

The following table shows the provider types and student cohorts included in each of the national

comparators in the report.

In the 2013 to 2014 academic year, a school sixth form or college will be seen as underperforming if its

results show that fewer than 45% of students achieve an average point score per entry in:

Average point scores per entry, and thresholds, at qualification and subject level in this report are based

on attainment in the academic year 2013/14. Average point scores per student are aligned with the DfE

Performance Tables (PT) criteria for students who have reached the end of Key Stage 5 and completed

at least one A-level or equivalent.

For Level 3 value-added data, the cohort is aligned with the Performance Tables cohort. This means

that attainment data in the PANDA for students not at the end of KS5 will not have corresponding L3VA

scores. The 2013/14 L3VA scores for AS level include results where the student went on to take the A2

in that subject; the majority of the results these scores are based on will be from the 2012/13 academic

The data for tables 3.1 to 3.3 are derived from the KS4 attainment data for 2012/13 and includes only

those qualifications that count as English or mathematics in the English baccalaureate. Where a student

had results in the KS4 attainment data for 2012/13, and was in Year 12 in 2013/14, their grades are

presented in tables 3.2 and 3.3. Students who completed KS4 in the independent sector and transferred

to the state-funded sector are included in these figures. The denominator for the percentage calculation

in table 3.1 is the number of students in Year 12, as reported in the January 2014 school census, who

completed their KS4 in 2012/13. This number is shown in the adjacent table.

The data for chart 3.4 apply to all students on roll and with results in 2013/14, and are supplied by the

DfE with the KS5 attainment data. The data for chart 3.5 are supplied with the level 3 value added data

and apply to the end of KS5 cohort.

Any provider with fewer than 11 students taking either vocational or academic qualifications will be

excluded from the corresponding minimum standard. This can mean that, although there may be end of
