Curb’s Filmore puts an industry spin on the artist interview:Being from Wildwood, MO, I flipped between two St. Louis stations growing up: KSD and WIL.The first time I heard myself on the radio was in Seattle during radio tour. I had no idea it was coming and then found myself singing along while everyone in the car filmed it. I remember I just kept laughing and was kind of in shock.

There are so many radio tour moments that run through my mind, but the best, funniest and scariest goes to hanging at the St. Louis Cardinals game and seeing my song and video played on the jumbo screen. Then meeting some of my baseball heroes in the dugout. I had my entire family with me, because it was my radio add day. So, it was a super emotional and special day, both personally and professionally. Well, I’m not trying to pick favorites, but my favorite road companion probably goes to my drummer/tour manager. He makes my life a million times easier and is one of my best friends. That being said, I’m only here today because of my family of band guys that have built this touring story with me. I love my team.If I could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, it would probably be Elvis, and I’d have to order a peanut butter and banana sandwich.I’m in the middle of releasing a lot of new music right now, which I’m very excited about, including a brand-new song on DSPs this Friday (1/10) called “State I’m In.” “London” and “Busy” also came out recently. I write a lot about the ups and downs in relationships. These songs happen to be about the downs but are very up-tempo. I have several more songs coming in the new year that I can’t wait to share!I bought a laptop recently. I had just gotten on the bus after flying to meet the band from the ACMs. In the airport leaving Vegas, I won $2000 on a Wheel of Fortune machine. We were passing an Apple Store on the way to the show, and I went for it! The most redneck thing I’ve done lately is hosting Thanksgiving at my new house and frying a turkey in my driveway using a pitchfork to lower it into the grease.I wish I had written “Somebody Like You” by Keith Urban. It’s a song that stands the test of time and is still relevant today. It could go to radio tomorrow and be a No. 1. My headphones are probably my most used item on the road.My least favorite interview topics are any questions about my hair.I’ll always and forever be binging The Office.

Working directly with the Country Music Association, I got to help with on-campus events including panel discussions with industry leaders, Q&A sessions with artists, and promotional efforts for concerts. Students also gained hands-on experience through working various CMA events. Here are some of my favorites: Executive Summit: This annual event sees student leaders from around the country gathering in Nashville to prepare for the upcoming year. We hear from CEO Sarah Trahern and CMA Foundation Exec. Dir. Tiffany Kerns, as well as artists. Over the years, this has included River House/Columbia’s Luke Combs, Capitol’s Caylee Hammack and Monument/Arista’s Teddy Robb. I feel more knowledgeable about the state of our industry because of these panels and discussions. CMA Fest & CMA Awards: I’ve worked as a media assistant at both, which has given me an inside look into two of country music’s biggest events. Without these opportunities, I would have never known I have an interest in live event management. Club Events: My chapter planned events including a soundcheck and Q&A with Stoney Creek’s King Calaway and a Q&A with WCYQ/Knoxville’s Carina “With A Twist Of Lime” Stewart. Members got a transparent preview of what careers in the industry could look like. Additionally, we recently sat front row at Garth Brooks’ soundcheck before his record-breaking show at Neyland Stadium. These experiences were only possible because of CMA EDU. Unlike other professional development organizations, CMA EDU is an opportunity to start a career in the industry before you even graduate. For those of us outside Nashville, the program was a way inside the music biz bubble. During my three years of involvement, I’ve had unique experiences and learned from many

Robb Report: Being a developing artist in Nashville who was himself a college student learning about the industry through real world experience — interning at WQMX/Akron, in his case — Robb was a natural fit for CMA EDU. “Like any job, you need to have real life experience to do your best,” he says. “Most of what I do cannot be taught in the classroom. If I hadn’t had the opportunity to intern at a radio station, I wouldn’t have had an early understanding of what a radio promo tour is.”

influential industry executives. Without CMA EDU, the path to my career would look totally different. –Addie Morton

And kudos to Chris Palmer and the Valory crew on securing 78 adds for Thomas Rhett’s “Beer Can’t Fix,” featuring Capitol’s Jon Pardi, topping this week’s board.

Summit Up: CMA EDU students from around the country with Teddy Robb (c) and Katie McCartney (to the right of Robb) at the annual CMA EDU Executive Summit.

At the outset of the campaign, students submitted proposals to bring a show featuring Robb to their markets, with five chapters selected. As part of the process, three weekly “mentor sessions” were hosted at the CMA office (and livestreamed for out-of-town students), with WME’s Becky Gardenhire discussing booking, routing and choosing a venue; the label’s Katie McCartney taking marketing, promotion and Teddy’s brand; and Longshot Management’s Rob Baker and Maddy Grossl offering direction on management, advancing a show and day-of-show responsibilities. McCartney, who wishes she had access to a program of this level in college, stresses how vital “street smarts” are in the music business, along with relationships that come from real life experience. “They had the chance to hear from the team and the artist about their path to the music business, and I hope that gave them more insight to the possibilities that are available to them if they work for it,” she says. “This event gave us a glimpse into what event management/venue booking is like,” says University of Florida chapter Pres. Isa Teijelo. “It’s the first time we have worked with so many people being involved in a project. We really learned how to communicate well with others and manage our time properly (both of which will be beneficial when we begin our careers).” WQDR/Raleigh and WWKA/Orlando offered on-air and online support to the shows in their markets, in addition to giving students the opportunity to meet a few of the programmers. In fact, several part-timers at WWKA have been hired in the last few years as a result of the station’s partnership with the University of

Central Florida chapter. “So many of these students don’t realize what is involved in programming a radio station, and as soon as they get a little taste of it — if it’s the right fit — they are hooked,” says MD/morning co-host Ashley Stegbauer. “And that’s exactly what we need these days to find the talent with passion that develops organically.” Adds McCartney, “That sort of networking and mentorship is what this program is all about, and hopefully there are even some internships and continued relationships that come out of that.” Pipeline Dream: Both Robb and McCartney agree the best moments came during the Q&As, where questions varied from how to write a song and market a brand to what a tour looks like. “I was able to discuss with students what my journey was like, then hear their goals,” says Robb. “It was inspiring to know that just taking time to talk to students can potentially make a huge impact.” Continues McCartney, “We need hungry and hardworking people to keep coming to town and breathing life and creativity into our ever changing industry – hopefully this helped fuel some of those people.” As the program continues to develop an active alumni base, Kaltenbach discloses one of CMA EDU’s objectives is removing the barriers that affect students who do not live or study in Nashville. “The end goal would be that every student had equal opportunity to benefit from our resources.” “We need to give back to the community that builds us,” concludes Robb. “My hope is that they see how special it is to be a part of the music industry and feel inspired to work hard and pursue a job in music. If that happens for one student, then we have done our job.” Learn more here. —Caitlin DeForest
