Once again this year, our calendar provides you with a report on the past year’s

School of Communication activities and a preview of the current year’s events.

Each month we focus on one of the notable achievements of 2006 and remind

you of the critical role your support played in making it happen — whether the

achievement involves cutting-edge research and creative activities, new ways of

teaching and learning, or innovative programs for helping students prepare for

life after Northwestern.

This calendar begins and ends with a signal achievement: the Metropolitan Opera’s

new production of Lucia di Lammermoor (above), directed by performance studies

professor Mary Zimmerman with scenery designed by theatre professor Dan Ostling

and costumes designed by recent alumna Mara Blumenfeld. Their stunningly beauti-

ful Lucia was featured at the opening gala for the Met’s 2007–08 season, and there

will be additional performances through spring 2008.

Outstanding teachers as well, both Zimmerman and Ostling make exceptional efforts

to include students in their projects. They contribute to Northwestern’s growing

impact in the arts by doing creative work of the highest caliber while remaining very

actively engaged in their students’ educational development.

School of Communication scientists conduct research that unlocks the mechanisms

of communication while simultaneously improving the practice of communication.

Communication sciences and disorders professors Nina Kraus and Patrick Wong

recently collaborated on a groundbreaking study focusing on the brain’s response to

speech. They recorded brain activity as study participants listened to the Mandarin

Chinese word “mi,” which has three different meanings depending on pitch and tone.

Half of the subjects had little musical background; the others had played a musical

instrument for six years or more. The Kraus-Wong team found that those with

musical training showed enhanced brain responses to the Mandarin pitch patterns.

for Hugh Knowles Professor Nina Kraus, these results suggest that schools should

think twice about cutting music offerings if they want students to excel in languages.

Additionally, Kraus believes that further investigation may show that music training has

the potential to aid children with language problems.

“Both language and music are complex phenomena and both involve sound,” Wong

explains. “Exposure to music might be tuning our auditory system, not just to help

us understand music, but also to help us understand speech.” The study, published in

Nature Neuroscience, has received external funding from the National Institutes of

Health and the National Science foundation and has been featured by the New York

Times, Chicago Tribune, and National Public radio.

finding new ways to convey meaning through artistic expression is at the heart of

Danceworks, the Dance Program’s annual showcase. Danceworks gives students the

opportunity to perform new pieces by faculty and alumni choreographers.

The 2007 program pushed traditional boundaries to create new ways of examining

social, political, and spiritual issues. Alumna Jenny Shore’s “Stubborn Little Mules”

juxtaposed lyrical movement with Czech rock and roll to tell a tale of three siblings

in wartime. In “God of Dirt” faculty member Billy Siegenfeld paired heavy-booted

dance movements with gypsy folk songs to trace the spiritual connection between

people and the earth. Adjunct faculty member Jeff Hancock generated jazz and

contemporary movements for “Mis (s) connect” in examining the pros and cons of a

multimedia society. Danceworks artistic director and Dance Program chair Joseph

Mills spotlighted Brazilian music and movement with “Zabumba!”

An untitled work by alumni Stephanie Paul and Kevin Durnbaugh explored how a

group of dancers can transform themselves into a rhythmic community — a fitting

metaphor for Danceworks, where students, faculty, and alumni come together to

showcase new modes and methods of performance.

At the School of Communication, learning happens everywhere and all the time —

in the classroom, through internships or extracurricular activities, and in encounters

with noted alumni and other visiting artists.

In April, Zach Braff (C97) returned to campus to offer students advice, guidance,

and insight into the entertainment industry. Best known for his role on the hit sitcom

Scrubs, the Grammy-winning actor, director, screenwriter, and producer spoke to a

standing-room audience (above), taught classes, and visited with Studio 22 students

(Braff received a Studio 22 film grant during his senior year at Northwestern).

Tony winner Bill Irwin came to Evanston in October as the 2006 Hope Abelson Artist

in residence. Actor, playwright, mime, director, choreographer, and clown, he met

with students and show cased his multiple talents in a public one-man performance.

Widely considered one of today’s hottest young musical theater songwriters,

Andrew Lippa served as a master teacher for “The Power of the American Popular

Song,” an August program by the Johnny Mercer foundation and Northwestern’s

American Music Theatre Project. The program enables a jury-selected group of

young songwriters to learn from established professionals. Lippa is no stranger to

Northwestern; his musical Asphalt Beach was premiered by AMTP in 2006.

Northwestern’s Waa-Mu Show is returning to its roots while charting a new direc-

tion for the future. This annual musical revue, written and performed entirely by

students, has been called the greatest college show in America.

After celebrating its history with the 75th-anniversary show in 2006, Waa-Mu took

a more contemporary approach in 2007. Junior Eugenio Vargas explains, “The

committee decided that it was important to have a completely different feel, so we

set the show in a nightclub, which allowed the music to be more pop and rock.” This

in turn enlarged the show’s cross-school base of student attendees. “Our student

writers and performers put in a lot of time perfecting the music and sketches,” says

Vargas, “and it’s a proud moment when the entire Northwestern community —

alumni, students, faculty, and staff — comes out to support them.”

This spring look for a production that builds on Waa-Mu’s status as an all-campus

institution. Years ago, various Northwestern constituencies, including football

players and engineers, took part in the show. This year’s executive board hopes that

the 2008 production will be a first step in returning to that campuswide feeling.

As Vargas explains, “Working on Waa-Mu is being a part of a huge legacy. I know

that I am playing a role in something that means more to 77 years of Northwestern

alumni than many of us can fully appreciate.”

June marks the end of the academic year and a new beginning for graduating

seniors. The University’s 2007 commencement speaker was School of Communica-

tion alumna Julia Louis-Dreyfus, a two-time Emmy winner best known as Elaine in

television’s Seinfeld. At times funny and irreverent, she also offered serious advice.

“read everything. read history and even read the newspaper — make yourself

do this, because no one else will,” she told the class of 2007. “Take the appetite

for inquiry you have whetted here in Evanston and feed it. Inquisitive, humble,

generous, and smart people think for themselves and think of others.”

Louis-Dreyfus encouraged graduates to make doing good central to their lives.

Active as an environmental advocate, she gave each graduating senior a Philips

compact fluorescent light bulb, explaining that if they all replaced an incandescent

lightbulb with a fluorescent one, together they would save enough energy to power

the state of Delaware for an entire year.

“Every movement has to start somewhere,” she told the class of 2007, “so let it

start with you. Discover for yourself a passion that is beyond self-improvement, that

is beyond self-interest, that connects you to the earth — beyond your own life — to

history, to nature, to the human spirit.”

The American Music Theatre Project is making an impact at Northwestern and

beyond. Dedicated to nourishing the vitality of American music theatre, AMTP

is committed to providing writers, directors, performers, and students with the

opportunity to develop and produce new musicals.

The success of the project’s initial shows has drawn some of the biggest names in

the industry to Northwestern, attracted by the chance to collaborate with North-

western faculty and students to develop new works in an atmosphere free from

commercial constraints. This was certainly the case for the acclaimed team that

produced AMTP’s fourth new musical, In the Bubble (above). This “dream team”

included alumnus Michael Greif, director of Broadway’s rent, and Oskar Eustis,

artistic director of New York’s Public Theatre.

Eustis says that AMTP “is making an invaluable contribution to the creation of

thrilling new American musicals. The combination of a great university and the

skilled professional theatre folks of AMTP is a model for the future.” Of Greif,

AMTP executive director Dominic Missimi says, “It was an invaluable experience

for our Northwestern students, faculty, and staff to be working with one of Broad-

way’s premier directors.” AMTP welcomes an equally talented array of visiting

artists for its summer 2008 production of Dangerous Beauty.

The School of Communication provides a balanced liberal arts education along

with myriad opportunities for students to delve into their own areas of interest. One

way to support student research and creative activity outside of class is through

the school’s undergraduate research grants. This competitive program provides

students with financial assistance to pursue individualized research and creative

projects under faculty direction. The projects enable students to examine facets of

the communication arts and sciences at home and abroad.

The 2007 research grants supported diverse projects ranging from an investigation

of whether auditory training could enhance older adults’ speech perception in noise

(communication sciences and disorders major Edward Lee) to a comparative study

of Jewish and African Americans in comedic theatre and film (theatre major Carla

Kessler). Performance studies major Ian Epstein traveled to Brazil to examine how

national labels such as “Brazilian” come to connote an ethnicity or a set of cultural

practices. His interdisciplinary research included conducting interviews, analyzing

Brazilian literature and texts, and taking ethnographic field notes and photographs

(including the one above). Course work at the School of Communication played an

integral role in Epstein’s research, exposing him to texts that provided the basis for

his theoretical framework. He describes his next step as “spinning my field notes

into creative nonfiction essays that are firmly based in historical research.”

The School of Communication is committed to attracting and cultivating outstand-

ing undergraduates who are predicted to make a direct impact in our time — the

“communication century.” Through the school’s successful Communication Century

Scholars program, a select group of students is offered special opportunities to

connect with faculty, conduct independent research or creative work, and prepare

for scholarship and graduate fellowship competitions. Many of these students have

received significant external recognition.

Communication Century Scholar and senior communication studies major rebecca

Donaldson spent last summer studying presidential election campaigns in Sierra

Leone — specifically, the effect of campaign communication on voter decisions.

Donaldson found that campaign rhetoric in Sierra Leone did not necessarily change

voter opinion or provide new information about the candidates. Long fascinated by

the role that communication plays in the U.S. political system, she feels that most

Americans have little sense of what takes place in campaigns abroad. As Donaldson

explains, “This is crucial when advocating the spread of democracy, since the type

of information voters receive about the candidates, and how that information is

received, is important in understanding to what extent people are participating

politically. After all, we should know how democracy actually operates in other

cultures if we are going to encourage its global expansion.”

Though best known for making us laugh as the host of Comedy Central’s The

Colbert report, Stephen Colbert (C86) takes his commitment to his alma mater

seriously. When Bobby Schmuck (C07) was researching his senior thesis on the

rhetoric of political news satire, he turned to Colbert for help and was offered a

surprising degree of access and input. Schmuck learned that while Colbert’s show

satirizes political commentators, his aim is simply “to be funny and that’s it. It was

refreshing to hear his take on satire; it can be used as a tool for either side, but he

con siders it a performance and an art rather than anything partisan.”

Colbert majored in theatre at Northwestern and was introduced to improvisation

at Chicago’s famous Second City. After sharing three Emmy Awards for writing

as a satirical correspondent on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, he rose to

full-fledged stardom as host of his own show. In 2006 Colbert was chosen as the

comedic performer for the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner,

and Time magazine named him one of that year’s 100 most influential people.

Between producing, writing, and hosting The Colbert report, Stephen Colbert found

the time last October to return to campus as grand marshal for the Northwestern

Homecoming Parade.

It is in the classroom that our students have the opportunity to shape the future

of communication. By partnering with faculty, and through research, lab work,

and internships, our students stay at the leading edge of the communication arts

and sciences. Often it is a specific course that creates a spark. for senior Vanessa

Soberanis, the class was Debra Tolchinsky’s Introduction to Animation. Vanessa ex-

plains, “Professor Tolchinsky’s classroom environment was so nurturing and inspir-

ing that, for the first time, I was able to pursue animating without fear of failure.”

This encounter with animation enabled Vanessa to express herself and stretch her

mind in ways she had only imagined. “Animation is a slow art form. It can take

hours and days to produce only a few seconds of motion. But the first time I played

back my footage and saw my inanimate puppets and drawings come to life, it was

like discovering something I had in me that I never knew about before. These images

are from my own head, but they are moving on their own.”

Made using scans of hand-drawn watercolor and ink paper dolls, Vanessa’s

Elephants and Acrobats (above) was chosen to be screened at the School of Com-

munication’s Honors Convocation. After graduation, Vanessa hopes to pursue

directing and designing animations for an adult audience. As she notes, “Adults

love the whimsy and magic of animation just as much as children do.”

School of Communication faculty break new ground as scholars and practitioners in

their fields. Among them is performance studies professor Mary Zimmerman, who

has found success by intertwining research, teaching, and theatre work. Best known

for adapting and staging ancient, originally oral texts and thus “returning them to

the air,” she won a Tony for directing her own adaptation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses.

When the Metropolitan Opera asked her to direct Lucia di Lammermoor, Zimmerman

knew she could embrace the challenge with the support of two longtime collabo-

rators and Northwestern colleagues — set designer Daniel Ostling and costume

designer Mara Blumenfeld. Because the music sets the pace in an opera, Zimmerman

could not rely on the dynamics of speech to tell this tale of madness and destruction;

the visual elements had to play a major role. With the help of a Northwestern faculty

research grant, she and Ostling visited Scotland, where the story takes place, to

draw inspiration from castles, forests, and shorelines. The two integrated many of

these elements into the set (above). According to Zimmerman, “It was winter, and

we were particularly struck by the intricate tree branches we saw along the roads

and on various estates. They bear a striking resemblance to the human vascular sys-

tem in the brain or the nervous system, which in Lucia’s case is broken.” reflecting

the talents and teamwork of the School of Communication community, Zimmerman,

Ostling, and Blumenfeld received rave reviews for the Met’s Lucia.
